Eagles May Finally Have Enough Big, Physical Receivers For The Redzone

I think the Eagles may have finally solved their need for redzone targets with the addition of rookie tight end Clay Harbor and big rookie wide receiver Riley Cooper.

Harbor did a nice job of beating the Eagles backup middle linebackers during the red zone period when he got the opportunities. He’s got a pair of sure hands and he does a good job of showing patience when he runs his routes.

Cooper who might be bigger than Harbor, went up and took the ball away from one of the team’s cornerbacks in the end zone. It looked like a man playing against a boy in the battle for the football.

He’s got to be the biggest wide receiver that the Eagles have had since I’ve been paying close attention to them.

Add to this group, starting tight end Brent Celek who has already proved he can do major job of catching balls in the red zone and you can see that Kevin Kolb will have a number of big and pysical receivers to get the ball to in the red zone.

Jason Avant has been an effective target in the redzone because he’s always willing to catch the ball in traffic and take a hit if that what is required.

Another target which Kolb may be able to go to will be second-year tight end Cornelius Ingram, who may be the best athlete of all the tight ends now on the roster.

He’s got a great combination of size and speed, which make it very difficult for defenses to match up against them in the red zone.

Finally Hank Baskett is another big target, but he must have a very effective camp if he’s going to make this football team.

It took some time but finally the Birds may have gotten this thing right in the redzone.

Probably more of a condemnation of the sad state of the Eagles secondary than an endorsement of their wideouts.

Well, if these unproven players can abuse our secondary in the red zone, I hate to see the likes of Dez Bryant, Whitten, & Austin running loose against our midgets on the corner. Don’t worry folks because we have the likes of “Macho Harris”……HE’S A TWEENER!

Well….From what I understand Cooper looked slow during the mini camp. That has me concerned. Do you guys realize that Jason Avant spends about 3 hours a day catching balls off the machine? That is dedication. now I know why he rarely drops a pass. I do think the Eagles are set with weapons on the offensive side. If this team can’t score points then I think we may need to take a serious look at the offensive coordinator and coaching..

Dudes – did you read where he wrote – the BACKUPS on defense. Christ – its going to be a long offseason – every article about how the D did well we are going to have the ‘get rid of Kolb start Vick – where’s McNabb why don’t we have a center and trade for Fitzgerald crowd’ every day the O looks good, our resident ‘I never bothered to check the size of any other team so we must be small’ crowd will discuss the ‘sad’ state of our D – one that was a top ten D until the last week of the season depsite multiple injuries, a suspension etc. Geez – relax and enjoy the commentary –

Last time I checked Andy does have a SB ring as an assistant coach with Green Bay.

I think the last championship team that McNabb was part of was his high school team in Chicago.

Truth be told I felt that the real move to make was to be rid of Reid and keep McNabb. The FO went in the other direction. We could not continue to sed the same thing out there year after year and expect to have a better result. Now that McNabb is gone the team and fans need to move on. There seemed to be a much more upbeat feel at the mini-camp this weekend. A shake-up can be good for all parties, why spend so much energy predicting a failure and trying to assign racist motives? Why

Green, you really think fans want to be pessimistic? What have this organization done to earn the trust of it’s fanbase? You keep saying trust them as if there’s a track record of championships here. We feel if the fanbase demands more, the organization may change their attitude and meet our expectations. But that’s asking too much….so Lurie, Banner, Reid, continue to roll cow dung out to the 50 yard line…we are true Eagles fans and because we bleed green…..if Spud tells us it smells like roses, we’ll roll in the meadows.

I think that the “experts” that you are talking about are from outside the area and didn’t live and die with thsi team the way that local fans do.

If you will remember, when Kotite left and went to the Jets all of the national media did was question the eagles fans and say how wrong we were about the coach. Well it only took 2 years to see what an idiot he was, but they never did credit the eagles fans for getting it right.

5 had run his time here. It was time to move on.

G, seriously let them play before it’s declared the “solved” their problems. Yesterday you all but smashed Kolb for passes getting knocked down and INTs and now today the big receiver issue is solved. It may be, but can we wait and see? I mean our DBs aren’t exactly the best and most physical ones you’ll find in the league. Let’s just wait and see before we declared anyone one thing/player a success or failure.

Especially since the article says against the backups, that really enforces the point that we need to wait and see before judgement. I’m pretty sure those same backups would get abused by Williams, Austin, Witten, Bryant as well. It’s the backups in minicamp against some guys that may not make the team. Do you really think the Eagles will carry 3 TEs and all be activated? So not sure how we can salivate on all 3 of them when only 2 will play on gameday. Let’s wait til at least preseason.

Navy, stop being so contradictive. On one hand you want people to “enjoy” the commentary that the big receivers looked good against the backups. But you don’t want people to point out the obviously reason they probably looked good and the fact that could mean our defense won’t be able to handle the better receivers in the NFL. You can’t pick and choose what you want people to comment on. Everyone can discuss as they like without someone always trying to tell them not to say something negative. ATTENTION EVERYONE: Navy wants you to soak in all the positive stuff no matter how useless it is BUT never point out anything that could be criticism of the team no matter how true it may be. Give me a break.

Scorp – contradict means to speak contrary to the assertions of. I made no assertions. I – just like you, pointed out the article said it was against the backup LBs and DBs – and if you pay attention, you notice the two previous posts before mine discussed 1) the sorry state of our secondary and 2)how the unknowns were abusing our secondary (go ahead – read them – I tried to quote directly)

The remainder of my post was a comment that this (reading and cheering ) is supposed to be fun – relax, enjoy reading about the eagles, this is OUR team – does it make people feel better to bash our team – hey the backups gave up a no pads TD today (they SUCK) or the O couldn’t score today despite no pass rush and no hitting (they suck!)

So – you can go soak in, up or on anything you want, I stand by my comment its going to be a long time between now and August if every time a ball is dropped the O sucks or a ball is caught the D sucks – then again, I’m sure we could be 5-0 and we would still have people posting how we weren’t # 1 in something.

I am looking forward to this season. I always stood up for #5 and think he is a quality NFL qb who we may miss as this season goes on. However, it appears to me that his departure removes a little bit of a cloud from over the Eagles. There is a reduced amount of pressure for the Eagles to atone for their failures in years past, because in my mind, those players are gone. The only one left is Akers. We have a new team, young and unproven, and hopefully eager to make a mark on the league that is stamped as belonging to them, not the old heads that were around for the NFC championship losses. We do not know much about this team yet, so I just feel like the dumping all over the Eagles could possibly wait until they prove themselves, one way or the other.

phillywill…..you boy are a straight up moron. Keep your posts to yourself. You are not a TRUE Eagles fan b/c nothing but garbage and nonsense comes out of your mouth. This franchise has not done the right thing in the Reid era, BUT I bet you are 1 of the many who jump on the bandwagon every year when they make their playoff run. So save all of us time and don’t post anymore of your crap on this site. Go join the Cowgirls websites! I apologize if I hurt your feelings and you are an accomplished GM in the NFL….BUT YOUR NOT!

Kolb will take as much heat as McNabb will especially with people who think that Vick should be starting. I can’t believe that we are still talking about #5. It’s over. Teams move on, and you have to as well. You said that you have been an Eagles fan for 28 years, well, the players that you mentioned haven’t been on the team that long. Eventually new players have to come in. I think that the McNabb has been popular because it is something different too. I am not sure what we are going to get from Kolb, but the status quo wasn’t working. You can call it hating McNabb, but even though he was of course the best QB in Eagles history, he was on the decline. He can’t stay on the field, he is not elusive anymore which makes it tough when he holds the ball so long. You are so quick to label anyone who has hope for the new season a McNabb hater/Lurie & Reid lover that it doesn’t really matter what anyone says. Some people are trying to move forward, and that doesn’t make them less a fan than you.

Guys the um Pads aren’t on yet. So really, what do we know? I love the idea of big targets for an ACCURATE PASSER to trow open in the endzone. Scoring will happen if our guys can simply out play the defense for a ball that is a TD or nothing. Our guys must be more physical when covered in the red zone. Also Jackson’s quickness will allow him to open small windows that an accurate and confident QB with a quick release may be able to get the ball into more so than when it was Fire the cannon and hope it doesn’t hit the ground or the goal post.

I am not hating on Mcnabb he had a great arm for the deep ball. I just think in close accuracy trumps power.
