Andy Reid Is Doing Kevin Kolb A Favor By Sitting Him Down

Would starting fourth-year quarterback Kevin Kolb against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Washington Redskins be a good idea, if he goes out there and gets his brain beaten in?  Would putting him in a position to fail be a good idea and would it further his development?

Would it be good for the football team to see him fail again?  Would it be good for the confidence his teammates have in him for them to see him continue to struggle?  Would Kolb confidence’s benefit from another battering like the ones he got from the Bengals, Chiefs and Packers in his last three games?

Those are the questions head coach Andy Reid and General Manager Howie Roseman had before them on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

That was the situation in the front office, but what was happening in the locker room.

Remember when who was winning the locker room was so important?  Do you remember this off season when Donovan McNabb was here?  Now you don’t hear about that as much.  Does this football team believe in Kolb or does it believe in Vick?

What do you think was said by the players on the airplane coming back from Detroit?  What do you think they said privately about their quarterbacks after the Packers game?

Do you think they were talking about how eager they were to get Kolb back in there as the starting quarterback?

Eagles wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin have gotten a taste of playing with Kolb and playing with Vick.  They’ll voice their support for Kolb publicly, but do you think they’re being completely honest.  Do you think Jackson who is playing for a new contract was looking forward to playing with Kolb, again?

Did you see Jackson’s body language when he came back to the huddle after another incompletion during the first half of the Packers game?

Contrast that body language to way he ran up to Vick with the football after scoring in the first quarter against the Lions.  He looked like a little kid in the candy store.

Players don’t like to embarrass one of their teammates but the truth is the truth.  It’s obvious that Kolb isn’t ready for primetime.

Don’t you think the guys on this offense realize that they broke a team record for scoring last year with Donovan McNabb at quarterback but were unable to score a touchdown during the preseason with Kolb at the helm?

I remember Todd Herremans talking about missing a block against the Packers, only to look up and see Vick 15-yards downfield with the football.

Reid is doing Kolb a favor by not starting him.  He could send the young man out there for the next couple of weeks and watch him embarrass himself.  He knows he would remove Kolb because of injury or poor play and nobody would complain about it, but it wouldn’t be a good experience in Kolb’s development.

It’s quite evident that the young man has lost his confidence.  He’s been struggling in practices and in the games.  His teammates like him but they’ve seen him struggling.  They know he can’t handle it right now.

He’s not the only player who can’t handle right now.

Center Mike McGlynn made a lot of mistakes with his adjustments on the offensive line against the Lions’ blitzes on Sunday.   Jason Peters is struggling.  Winston Justice is struggling.  In truth, the entire offensive line is struggling.  They were allowing jail breaks on Vick and everybody knows Kolb would have been killed if he had been in their this past week.

All of the NFL defenses will be licking their chops if they get the chance to go after Kolb behind this offensive line which can’t get out of their own way.

Reid is making a courageous move by sitting down Kolb and taking the public relations hit.  Again, he could leave him in there and let him get his brain rearranged, then nobody would criticize Reid for playing Vick.

All the people that are criticizing Reid should step back and think how about easy he could make it for himself if he started Kolb, let the situation play out and let everything take care of itself.  You CAN criticize Reid for this poor offensive line, but that’s for another article.

Good morning Mr.Cobb, I would just like to say I wish you would call these morning team aholes and tell them something because it is hard to listen to them trash micheal vick, especially Rhea Hughes and the dont even know the man. And I dont understand how they dont get the reason why big red brought in Vick. He has been around Kevin Kob for four years now, so he obviously nows that something is not right about this kid because he bought in vick. What they thought he was bringing in vick to be a bench player. Obviously big red saw something in vick that he could use the his advantage. And kolb getting that concussion was the perfect excuse to get vick on the field. But I just hate listening to this morning team and like I said especially Rhea Hughes.

Yes! Kolb seems like most coaches son. Excellent in the film room. He may be a great QB coach one day. People keep refering to him only having 15 snaps. Look this is his 4th year. He looked like he was scared out there. He has regressed. I’m sure that the coaching staff saw that! He is done as an Eagle

I agree about doing Kolb a favor it would have been concussed again but Vick might not eventually fare any better
He was sacked 6 times Sunday

And G you contradict yourself

You said Kolb couldn’t do anything with the same offense McNabb had last year and then proceed to say how sad this years O line is

On target G,
How about a little jugglling of this O/Line on the lines of something like this
LT- Herremans, LG V Wells, C N Cole, RG W Justice, RT A Howard

I think Peters has more than let everyone down and needs to be moved, traded, released

Standing on the sideline watching doesn’t count

If you want to contrast him with other QBs use Ryan and Flacco who stepped right in their rookie years

Guess what everybody?..I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but the NFC is totally up for grabs..Alot of teams groaned at the news that Vick is back and better than ever..Speed kills and we now have the most on one side of the ball in the entire NFL..Buckle up cause it’s gonna be a crazy ride..

It’s an absolute travesty the way the o-line has played this year. I have to assume it’s a large part of why Vick was given the starting job because he at least has the ability to make plays with his legs. How on earth did Reid think we could go into the season with this pathetic/soft line? I think I’m ready to see Andy Reid gone in Philadelphia.

Also, G, some unsolicited advice; there are WAY too many rhetorical questions in your article. While reading it, I became slightly agitated with reading question after question and was wanting more substance and info.

All you need to know is already out there; and it’s highlighted in BOLD by the Packers players who to a man pointed out that they preferred playing against Kolb, because that made their life easy. Everyone on our schedule now has to worry/game plan for Vick, while the rest of our weapons can end up with a little less direct attention. No brainer. Now let’s hope Vick can live through the season with the Swiss Cheese that is our O-Line.

You can’t sit a guy who is playing qb the way he is right now. G makes a goodpoint and i think its true, the players have lost faith in the dude. Vick is fresh and has a leaders mentality,he’s learned from Don,and he’s done just as much work in the offseason andmaybe more then Kevin. Let’s get too the playoffs.Juan needs too ride these guys like horses too the West all week. And give me some max protect early too keep Mike’s jersey clean.

I have always thought Bret Farve was overrated because he threw too many interceptions. But when he threw that TD pass against the Cowboys and had them crying like little girls, I became a Farve fan for life. That one piece of joy was priceless.

Trading out of the 1st round, bringing in one torn ACL guy after another. Even drafting torn ACL guys. Then finally letting go a probowl QB who throw the fewest ints in the history of the game… Getting the biggest offensive linemen in the league then never using them to run, changing the college DE alltime sack leader to a OLB instead of just, oh I don’t know DRAFTING one… This flashback is raising My blood pressure, so I’ll wrap this up.

Andy. Thank you for saying to the team. And all Eagle fans…

It’s not my money but why did we give Kolb an extention again? I will be the first to say it. If and when Vick has 6 games of good QBing under his belt he will want an extention. Remember the O-line is so horrible as everyone says. His agent will be a fool not to. His style of play could get him a season or career ending injury. I know fans don’t want to talk money but this is facts. The Eagles have made this bed! I am so excited about this season. McNabb is gone and everything is fine now! GO VICK!

Here is a list of some players the Eagles have brought in coming off injuries who did not amount to much during their time here that bsm if referring too..
Monte Reagor, Sean Jones, Marlin Jackson, Stacey Andrews, Takeo Spikes,
and here are a couple of players that were drafted, who were coming off major injuries during their college years, Jack Ike, C Ingram, who never recovered and never played in the NFL
and here are some players drafted and who were asked to play another position resulting in poor results so far, Chris Gogong, Macho Harris, Ricky Sapp, Bryan Smith, Charles Scott, Tony Hunt,
Even players that on this years team like W Justice, M McGlynn, Mike Bell, Omar Gaither, have been asked to play postions because there has been no one else groomed to do…

I know that Reid is well respected around the league. I will continue to say it loud. JOBS WILL BE LOST IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS! I truly want Vick to have success. Reid telling us Kolb is the starter then saying Vick is the starter. Vick should be the starter. Just like in training camp the QB position should have been wide open. Reid is just coaching on the fly now and hoping for the best. He didn’t address the line issue over the summer. It’s not just about the QB position people. It takes a team to win a championship!

I was willing to give Kolb a 2 game grace period so this experiment would not cost our team a playoff spot and this thing played itself out perfectly. Kolb is a smart guy but a very poor quarterback especially if the offensive line is suspect and while this fall on the front office evaluation, we must give credit to the same front office for picking up Vick. On another note…Vick is left handed which switches the blind side so it wouldn’t be that big of a deal sliding Justice to RG and put a fresh strong Howard in at RT and continue to coach Mclynn up but if he falters again put in Cole untilw we can possibly pry Mawae from the players union. This offenensive line needs serious addressing along with our horrendous special teams. I never could understand how our arrogant FO could just let players go haggling over a penny without an adequate replacement on the roster. We never replaced Ike Reese or Quinton Mikell from a special teams standpoint…our two best special teams players in the last decade… I can go on and on…but at least they got something right…MICHAEL VICK

The best was Eskin having nothing to say yesterday. It was so funny. He almost wanted to throw up yesterday. I loved every minute of it. He’s been defending Kolb like it was his son and saying how Andy would never bench him after only 1 half. And then it happened. I love it when guys like Eskin are wrong and he can do nothing but sit there and take. One guy called the show and was like “Ike, I want to talk to you. Howard’s a hater. I know he sitting there with the tight face”. And Ike started bagging up and Eskin couldn’t say anything. It was truly great.

the “daily news” was used…(don’t forget Reid studied media and journalism in college). He knew he wanted Vick the whole time but could not sell Vick without getting blasted, so he sold you guys “The all American Golden Boy” knowing you would support him and not care about an all time franchise QB getting traded to an NFC EAST rival. You helped Reid and absolved him from his treatment of Mcnabb. Now, he goes to Vick after sticking Kolb…and these media guys are upset? Where was this outcry for the all time Eagle Mcnabb? I don’t understand why anyone listens to WIP at all , any of it. It’s pretty much all trash, and just people with opinions, many just rambling off the top of their heads, it could be any of us, just talking sports, gossip or whatever. The only other thing that you’ll get on talk radio is media guys who will say any dumb shit, even if it’s just a schtick, to keep making money and that includes spewing bullscrap if it makes them more of a conversation/controversy spark. Its amazing how many people listen to the guys that they ‘hate’ so much.

I now think they need to look at LT J Peters, DT M Patterson, DE D Tapp, LB E Sims and decide if these players are good fits for this team moving forward, so far, I don’t see where they are contributing anything and would rather see other players in their places..

Think about this… Sal Pal said vick looked good against the Lions cause they stink, and what will that prove?? Well he also said the jaguars sre worst. So if Kold was in there and beat the jaguars and they are worst then what would that prove about him??? Also people talk about that reid Dummed doen the offense for vick, Wel what in the heck do you think he did for Kold last year when he started for Mcslabb… reid thinks he has manning back there reading complex defenses and he doesnt. But he though kolb could and he has shown he cant. maybe if reid kept it simple for kold he do do it again. Kold doesnt stink reids complex offense is only for certain QB’s. alot of teams are winning by just kepping it simple and sticking to basic football. Hey andy remember K.I.S.S, keep. it. simple. stupid..lol And on the Business side.. if they left Klob out there and he embarresed himself and gets hurt the leauge will see his flaws and they would not be able to get anything for him if they traded him. By taking him out they have a chance to make Some money back if he goes. I CHEER FOR THE NAME ON THE FRONT OF THE JERSEY MORE THAN I DO THE NAME ON THE BACK.. IM A TRUE FAN.. GO BIRDS..

Paul, I guarantee you, you are the only NFL fan in the world who constantly complains about the lack of contribution from the 6th DE! Utterly ridiculous! And on a Dline that is doing a fine job getting pressure. And all this talk about our DTs. Best didn’t even have that many rushing yards, he did most of his damage through the air – behind the DTs. Patterson is quite fine. He does his job, which is not to rush the QB. And as for sims, two games, one that we lost, not because of him. Stop cherry picking players you wish to plug into your fantasy (in your head, not the game) transactions. And Jason Peters is a hell of a run blocker, and with Vick at QB, that’s a great thing.

Yeah I agree. When I started listening to them a couple years ago, I could clearly tell everything was agenda driven and gimmicky to drive ratings. You really can’t complain about them, just have to learn to not listen, or if you are bored and you do listen, ignore their over the top declarations. I think most listen because a lot of people do listen to them and to get a pulse on what’s going on. But the weekend shows aren’t bad with guys like Ray Diddy, Hugh Douglas (isn’t that good but not agenda driven), Rob Charry and a couple other people. But the morning show and eskin is the worst. To Schiller,
For the record, D Tapp was traded for and talked about from everyone in the organizaation as
being that 3rd/4th Rotational DE and a Pass Rusher from the DT position (ala D Howard) in passing situations all spring and summer.
The fact that he is now the 6th Stringer is exactly the point I was trying to make…
Anyone off the street can be the 6th DE and be inactive every week so cut your losses & get rid of him to improve depth in another postion ..

schiller
schiller
September 22, 2010 3:41 pm

Paul, if Cole, Graham, or Parker, or Barnes for that matter were to get injured, they need the depth. The Eagles have tape and an opinion on Tapp, and they evidently feel that he’s worth keeping around. They would rather have Tapp on the roster than Egboh or any other DE out there. You don’t just cut depth because a fan named Paul is disappointed he didn’t live up to the media/team hype. If they thought Tapp was less worth a roster spot than someone available ‘out there’, then a move would be made. So far that hasn’t happened. get over it. As the season goes on, you and I have no idea what will happen at the DE position. Tapp may get some reserve playing time and play well. Or who knows, they may cut him and get someone else too… but to fault the Eagles for keeping him on the roster, that’s just getting silly. Are you upset that Wells hasn’t played yet? You do not need to get production out of every man on the 53 roster by week 3 of the season. If those are your standards, there are 32 NFL teams you will be disappointed with…

schiller
schiller
September 22, 2010 3:43 pm

And Paul, when they traded for Tapp, they were getting something for Clemmons who they were going to let go anyway. At the time, they didn’t know they’d have a chance to draft Brandon Graham, and they didn’t know they’d get Brandon Graham. Graham is better than Tapp, so Tapp went down on the depth chart. That’s all. That’s it. But you’re freaking out for some reason. We have depth at the DE position. That’s a good thing. You don’t just get rid of depth to satisfy a shopping/transaction addiction like you have.
