Kevin Kolb: “I want to be a starter and I think it’s time”

“I want to be a starter and I think it’s time”, said Kevin Kolb in the locker room after the game last night.  He didn’t say it in a demand to myself a group of reporters surrounding him last night in the locker room after the Eagles season was ended with a 21-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

It wasn’t a shock to any of us listening to Kolb.  He hadn’t been disruptive during the season but it was pretty much an accepted fact that he thought he was ready to start now.

He didn’t play like a starter in the Dallas game, but he had played well in his previous starts when Michael Vick fractured a rib earlier in the season.

“I love it here, as everybody knows,” Kolb said. “My family’s settled in here. I would love to be starting here. But I want to be starting somewhere.”

I understood all of that, but Kolb continued and said something which I don’t think is true right now, at least not here in Philadelphia.

“Whatever happens you want to know the answer so you can prepare one way or the other,” Kolb said. “Our communication will be fine. … And I’ll be looking to starting here, hopefully.”

I don’t see him starting here any time soon.  It would mean the Eagles deciding to let Michael Vick go and I don’t see how that’s going to happen here right now.

I’m not saying it can’t happen, but I’m saying I don’t see it happening.

Kolb is under contract for next year, so the Eagles are holding all the cards.  They could bring him back especially after thinking about how easy it is for Vick to get hit and knocked out of action.  We’ll have to wait and see what happened in this situation if the Birds decide to bring Kolb back as a backup.

Will he demand to be traded?  Will stir up controversy with the threat of not coming to camp?  How will the unsigned CBA affect the Eagles actions?

The key will be what other teams are willing to give up in order to acquire his services and how much the Eagles will demand that they give up.

You’ll have to stay tuned on this one.

BabyArm is about to get the lesson of his life: It’s a lot harder than it appears. After getting knocked around for about 8 games or so, he’ll be crying for his mommy.

When Kolb says I want to be a starter and hopefully here is he not watching MV7? First off he is in a no win situation. Can you imagine if Vick was not retained all the pressure and venom from fans. His first bad game, hell his first interception the fans would crucify him. Theres noway he would ever be able to succeed here. You got rid of a starting pro-bowl qb a runner up MVP, a playmaking stud for Kolb. If I was Kolb I wouldnt want to play here.

This Kolb guy really needs to be quite. He’s really not that good to be expressing what he want. his arm is garbage and he’s not athletic at all on the pro level.

on another note we really need to get a top pedigree at tight end, move Mcglynn over to guard when Jackson returns to Center, and get Winston Justice off of this team. With Vick being left handed we need a Stud protecting his blindside andKing Dunlap is not the answer. These picks need to be addressed within the first 4 rounds or make upgrades through free agency.

On Defence.

We need to draft a top Corner in the 1st round period…or make a play for champ bailey.

Put Bradley on the strongside…… Fokou and Chaney are locks..and draft for depth.

11 Tds, 7 Ints in the last 6 games not to mention the fumbles with a (3-3) record down the stretch. If that was McNabb out there people would be running him out of town. Same finish as last year. Im not sold on Vick for the future. Im not sold on Kolb either, but I wouldnt give Vick a 3+ year deal. No way.

mugzy…with that offensive line Vick got more out of this team than any QB including Brady could have.

The Fumbles came from defensive linemen breaking free in the backfield…If not Vick …who should be signed to a mutiyear deal as QB?

Answer that question…what quarterback the Eagles should sign for a 3+ year deal?

If you don’t have an answer then I’ll come back with Michael Vick proved he deserve the deal for taking a team that would have been a 5 win team with Kolb to the pl ayoffs.

Did you say that when the Eagles signed babyarm proved nothing Kolb to a 4 year deal?

answer the question ….what QB should we sign to a multiyear deal if not Mike Vick?

Vick played with the same exact offensive team as McNabb last year with the same results. Vick is aging and as soon as he loses a half-step on his scrambling via age or injury, both very probable, he`s useless.

Vick was (1-2) vs playoff teams this year and was shut down by good defenses. If not for the Giants colapse, they probably dont even make the playoffs.

Id rather take a risk on Kolb than on Vick at this point. We saw where Vick got us, the same place it got Atlanta. Some great plays, some great games, but in the end vs a good D he will turn the ball over

Kevin Kolb is not the best qb on this team. Mike Vick is. If the front office was smart -and they’re not- they would trade him and resign Vick. But no qb will when with fatboy calling the shots.

I don’t understand that hatred for Kolb here. He didn’t play well in the Dallas game because he was playing with the scrubs. He was running for his life. He didn’t blow the Titans game because he didn’t play CB. This guy deserves to have the opportunity to start. It may not be here but somewhere else. If we have no plans to solidify the OL with studs we might as well keep him around considering how many hits Vick takes.

Kolb, let the door hit you on your way out… I do not Hate Kolb either, I just don’t want him leading this team. The Eagles better draft a STUD LB and another safety with fire in their belly. We always play it safe in our draftpicks… There is no intimidation factor on Defense, where are the nasty guys at. The O-line C, RG, RT need to be replace too.

Eagles has some huge decisions to make and they need to make them sooner and not later..
#1) Resigning VIck– How much and how long (Kolb has 1 more on his current contract) but you can’t
really start talking to teams about Trading Kolb until you have Vick signed and that’s not a given..
(they should have taken care of this already in my book for they can’t wait until March/April to get this done for the other teams with new coaches and needing QB’s would have made their moves already causing the demand and therefore the value of Kolb to decrease.
#2) Replacing O/C MM who will leave to take the HC spot in Cleveland and Coach AR will most likely look to Brad Childress, but what if Choldress wants to be a HC somewhere else, even at the College level..

Reid Sucks- the hatred has nothing do do with Kolb (ok maybe a little). Lets review….

1) The eagles waste a 2nd round draft pick on a 5th rd talent.
2) Hes a Cowboys fan.
3) You can see Reid creating 5 as a scapegoat for himself.
4) The birds insert him as the King of Philly and hype it up fpr him,
5) He’s a cowboys fan.
6) Birds give him McNabbs press box (that just looked stupid).
7) When drafted… we needed ALOT of other things.
8) He sucks.
9) He says he wants out right after the loss.
10) Hes a cowboy fan.

so there you have it…. did I mention he’s a cowboy fan? Yes he’s a team player…. but he will be with another team soon. The guy has a noodle arm.

Once QB M Vick is signed and under Contract, then shop Kolb for the best Deal which would most
likely be the Titans,49ers,Cardinals,Dolphins,Panthers but not as many teams as people think
The Broncos seem to be going with Tebow which makes the experienced K ORton availalbe
The Browns seem happy with C McCoy so they are not in the market
The Titans will be shopping V Young who is available
The Dolphins will be shopping C Henne who is available
Add these QB’s to the 4-5 Draft picks in Mallett,Locker,Newton and others, and maybe the markey out there is not that strong or desperate..

Let Kolb go. At least recoup the 2nd round pick wasted on him when we needed other talent. Could have use that pick on someone to help Westbrook and McNabb. Anyhow, he is in no position to be giving ultimatums. He has done nothing and proven less. Tell him to give back some of the money he got to hold a clipboard. I understand he wants to start but he’s no proven QB that can make those types of statements about starting here or leaving. Forget him and anyone else who doesn’t like their role. I hope Holmgren hires Marty and he takes Kolb with him.

I think the EAgles will do the following
Place a Franchise Tag VIck and have him for 1 more season and keep Kolb as the back-up
I just don’t see the Eagles Organization paying $60-$80-$100 Million to QB VIck for a long-term deal..
(Too many risks for them I believe)
Another reason is I think Coach AR has 1 more season to make a Super Bowl Run or he will be fired…

Scorp…well said.

This Kolb guy became a story when the Eagles plucked him out of the sky trying to be smarter than everyone else.

Kolb will be a career backup in this league and if we get that 2nd rounder back I’m not sure we’ll do any better with the pick.

But, Kolb needs to go. Lock Vick up long term and let’s give Kafka the clipboard. Kafka arm is stronger and he have a year of watching under his belt. There’s more issues with this team than discussing the one strong point in the QB position.

How about an intimidating linebacker? or a smash mouth offensive linemen? A kick returner that can get 15 yards…. How about a Corner instead of plugging in bums after letting go a proven vet?

How about running the ball when the opposing team is playing their safeties 25 yards deep?

We shouldn’t be discussing Kolb right now….he’s outta here.

Let’s talk about not going into another season with blindspots. We welcome Childress…..he will run the ball sometimes.

Paulman a risk to sign Vick? Thats to funny. The RISK is hoping Kolb can play dont you think? What are we gonna do release Vick and pay Kolb 80 million? The Risk is hoping you can find a qb. Vick is 30 friggin years old not 40. He is a athlete, he has missed a few years of wear and tear. The logical thing would be to fix the oline and he could probably play for another 6 years at a high level. How would are dumb asses look if we let vick go to another team and have to watch highlights. Lets get rid of one of our only pro bowlers? Makes perfect sense. . Keep everyone else but get rid of the pro bowl qb. lol

Paulman- your crazy… Vick WILL be here for years. He and Djack both sign 4 year contracts oce this labor mess is done. The will prolly tag vick but get a deal done before camp. They will get 3 FA’s to come here. Andy knows our D is a mess. Expect to draft a OL and a CB first and 2nd round.

I’m with paulman- vick’s not going to get any better. Stevo, you’re nuts if you want to sign him for 4 years! He’s going to lose speed as he gets older and keeps taking hits. Kolb is young and ready to break out. The eagles should make the gutsy call and trade vick’s rights to someone like the Vikings and roll with Kolb!

This Kolb talk is totally unnessasary. Kolb is garbage…We have a pro bowl QB….let’s talk about positions that actually needs improving in the off season. You don’t improve your team but subtracting pro bowl players…you add to your pro bowl talent.

Kolb is no where near a pro bowl player so there’s nothing to see here.

We need a tight end that knows where theend zone begins and ends and does not disappear for speels in a season. Weaver will be a welcoming addition to the offence…Let get some O tackles for the right side and a smash mouth guard. How about a Corner who can actually play opposite Asante?

These discussions are worthy ….not whether or not Kolb get another chance to show us what we all know already.

He’s garbage.

Times yours

C’mon Guys,
I am not talking about a Risk of Vick earning his Contract while playing on the field..
I am talking about if something goofy happened off the field with VIck, and he gets suspended or even expelled by the Commisioner… Paying a $60-80-$100 Million Contract with $20-$25 Million in Guaranteed $$ is a Risk when the player has a “Zero Tolerance” by the league.. Don’t you think…

I personally would Franchise Vick this year and have him be the #1 Starter for 2011 Season..
I would trade Kolb and get as much as I can for him (probably a 2nd Rounder and a 4th Rounder at best) Anyone who thinks a team will give up a 1st Rounder for him is crazy…I would then pick-up a veteran Qb as a back-up to VIck who is mobile and could adapt to the Eagles System which Kafka gets another year to develop as a back-up.. Maybe a Troy Smith, a Seneca Wallace come to mind
My assesment is that Kolb is not a top Starting NFL QB caliber at this time

There’s one lesson Corn on the Kolb has not learned yet….How to keep his trap shut. The team just lost a playoff game, you’ve thrown a record number of interceptions for the number of games you’ve played and the only thing you can think of is how appropriate it would be for you to be a starter next year…really?? Are you kidding me? Just unbelievable.

Kolb will get his opportunity to throw 16-20 interceptions next year, probably in Tennessee. I’ll be happy when the QB controversy here finally dies, at least for a couple of years anyway.

paulman

January 11, 2011 2:32 pm

I think Kolb did a pretty good of keeping his mouth shut all season and supporting Vick,Coach AR
and teammates, I think he simply responded to a reporters question so I can’t be pissed at him for that.
I do think he needs a change of scenery and needs to be on a team/offense that runs the ball a lot..
He is not a good fit for this Eagles offense which is built for mobile QB (since the O/L is weak)
and because it’s passing game requires a strong arm (which he does not have) and has a
70% Pass to 30% Run ratio… A team like the Titans,49ers,Dolphins,Panthers would all be better fits since the Run the ball more and rely on play-action, intermediate passing routes which better suit his
skills and arm strength..
