Moss Is Considered A Great Leader And Teacher For The Pack

The defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, linebacker coach and secondary coach for this past year’s Eagles team are no longer workign for the Philadelphia Eagles and that’s not a coincidence.  Andy Reid hasn’t said it but from his actions we can assume that he didn’t think they did a good job.

Because of the openings on the staff, Reid has to be looking for help and where better to look than the best defensive team in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers.  It’s probably not the Pittsburgh Steelers because they play a 3-4 defense. Reid is familiar with the Packers because he coached there for quite a few years.

One of the coaches who is thought of highly in the Green Bay Packers organization is Assistant Head Coach/Inside linebackers coach Winston Moss.  He was kept on the staff by head coach Mike McCarthy fired the entire defensive staff.

I spoke to a league source this morning who thinks it would be a great move for the Eagles if they hired Moss to be their next defensive coordinator.  The veteran NFL person was enthusiastic about the thought of Moss getting a look as a defensive coordinator and convinced he would be a great one.

“Winston is a great leader. His leadership skills and teaching ability are second to none and he’s an outstanding communicator with his players. He knows the 4-3 defense and the 3-4 like the back of his hand.  And Winston is long overdue to get a coordinator’s job.”

My league source says Moss is a tireless worker who would turn things around in Philadelphia, if given the chance.

Right now Moss is the Assistant Head Coach and inside linebackers coach for the Packers.  He has been with coached all the linebackers before the team switched to a 3-4 and former Steeler and Panther’s great Kevin Greene took over the outside linebackers this year.

Now Moss is focused on the inside linebackers and during his time with Green Bay he has coached Pro Bowl middle linebacker Nick Barnett, Pro Bowl alternate A.J. Hawk and young sixth-round pick Desmond Bishop.

Bishop has stepped in for Barnett in the middle of the defense with Hawk and they haven’t missed a beat.  The Packers defense finished the season second in the league in points allowed.

Hawk led the team in tackles with 111.  On top of that he had a sack and three interceptions. Hawk also broke up ten passes.

Desmond was second on team with 102 tackles.  He added three sacks and one interception which he returned for a touchdown. Bishop contributed 8 pass break ups.

Moss is given some credit for the way that so many of the Packers young defensive players have developed.

We’ll have to wait and see if Andy Reid thinks he deserves that credit, and will offer him the Eagles defensive coordinator’s job.

G, do you think there’s a possibility that the Eagles have targeted Moss, or any d-coordinator for that matter, or do you think they’re just flying by the seat of their pants right now?

What i wonder is if he was so good a linebackers coach. Why did GB switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and why didnt he continue to coach the outside linebackers as well?

i sure hope so. i think were all on board with this guy. pro-moss.
i wouldnt mind snagging capers (doubtful)

sign plaxico, nnamdi, posluszny and draft an OL in the 1st and 2nd rounds

Sounds like an up and coming Coach and real a lot of good things that are going for him,
Can he be an overall DC, is he strong enough in the Secondary area … He will have an expereinced asset in Washburn handling the DL and Moss obviously knows what he’s doing with the LB Corps..
He’s had great exposure with D Capers/M Trgovac, now if they can get a good Secondary Coach to help Moss along, then this sounds like a strong Staff to get this Eagles D back to where it belongs..
A Tim Hauck from the Titans, a Dennis Thurman from the Jets would be awesome..

It’s evident that the brain-trust is waiting for the SB ‘s conclusion to interview someone and all that I have read about Moss has been glowing. If I was him I would jump at the chance to run a Defense and be given full reign! I’m sure his goal is to be a Head Coach in this league and this could be used as a stepping stone (any head coaching prospect especially on the Defensive would not stay long unless Reid changes his offensive philosophy). I would ask about changes on the offensive side if I were him because of course there has to be cohesion or you run into the same results that have plagued this team perennially.

wmonell:
Lebeau has adamantly stated he’ll go nowhere in PA other than Pittsburgh. He’s 70+ so why would he shift out of the best football environment (organization, fans, culturally) in the NFL to make a horizontal move? Reid prefers 4-3 D, at least for now.

Glad they are taking their time. Just get somebody who has a resume and proven results. Intelligent with an attitude. Maybe somebody can teach Ernie Sims how to play. Just get a neurosurgen.

What a weapon he would be …”if he only had a brain.”

That is correct G-Man…
Western Pa people are an extenstion of the Midwest and typically they wan’t nothing to do with the
hustle & bustle of an East Coast City…A coach of almost 40 years and close to retirement has no interested in coming East.. .He either stays in Pittsburgh, possibly moves out west to Arizona to
help his buddies Ken WIsenhut & R Grimm to build the Cardinals Defense or retires…

To Supadad and to help clarify ..
Packers switched to a 3-4 when DC Dom Capers was hired 2-3 years back.(they ran a 4-3 Scheme previously) Also Dom Capers, hired his ex-Pro Bowl Student OLB Kevin Green to teach the nuances of playing OLB in a 3-4 scheme to a rising new star in Clay Matthews JR who plays very similar to the style that K Green played with while with the Steelers/Panthers years ago…

Speaking of Leadership..Answer this question. Would the 34 year olds Hines Ward and James Farrior still be Eagles if they played here in Philly. My answer is that they would have released them 2 years ago. I was listening to Paulsboro’s Isaac Redmen (Steelers 2nd year RB) and he kept talking about the veteran leadership of Ward and Farrior and how the yound guys look up to them. We drop BDawk “like a piece of ****” and everyone thinks it’s great because “we” saved $…No we didn’t save any $..Lurie saved the $. The 5 mil. it would of cost to keep him would have pushed us up to maybe 19 th in the league in payroll..what a joke. The lesson here is to learn from the winners ..ie..Steelers.
