Eagles Fill Out Offensive Staff By Promoting From Within

The Eagles offense broke the team record for scoring for the third year in a row.  For that Andy Reid is handing out quite a few promotions.  David Culley, James Urban,  Doug Pederson, Duce Staley and Bobby April Jr. will all get promotions.

I’ve criticized Eagles wide receiver coach David Culley in the past but I think he’s done a good job with the development of Jeremy Maclin and the continued success of DeSean Jackson. Reid is promoting Culley to senior offensive assistant/wide receivers, which means he’s getting a good raise for the success of the wide receivers.

Jackson has made the Pro Bowl the last two years and Maclin isn’t far behind with his production.  The Eagles wide receiver corps of Jackson, Maclin, Jason Avant and Riley Cooper is one of the best groups in the league.  It’s only fair that they give Culley some of the credit for their success.

Last year’s quarterback coach James Urban was the guy who put in the time and focus to correct the fundamentals of Michael Vick.  If you went to Eagles practices in 2009 or to their training camp in 2010, you would see Vick and Urban out on the field after practice working on the fundamentals of throwing the football.

For that Urban is the assistant offensive coordinator this year rather than the quarterback coach.  I imagine he’ll be doing a lot of the same things, but they’ve probably given him a raise for his work with Vick.  Urban has also spent a lot of time with Kevin Kolb and helped him develop his game.

Pederson is also getting a promotion to quarterback’s coach after being offensive quality control coach from 2009-10.  He knows the Eagles offense like the back of his hand and is probably headed to being an offensive coordinator down the road somewhere.

Former Eagles running back Staley was a coaching intern a year ago, now he will be the quality control guy for the special teams and assist special teams coach Bobby April.  Staley will also assist running backs coach Ted Williams, with the running backs.  I thought he had a lot to do with the improvement of second-year running back, LeSean McCoy.

Finally, Bobby April’s son will take over as the steam special teams quality control coach.  He and Staley will be looking at video all year long for the special teams.

Sounds good,
I can see Doug Pederson becoming the Eagles OC under HC J Castillo
after both Coach AR/MM leave town in 2012..

Bobby April was named the Defensive quality control coach, not the Special teams quality control coach.

None of this means anything…….. Its not good to keep hiring within. They will still run the ball 75% of the time and in return be osted early in the playoffs or get Vick killed. I think our D will see great benefits from a new experienced D-Line coach and also I do think Castillo will do better than expected. D needs 2 key FA’s as well as some high picks on that side of the ball.

Birdo, I won’t go as far as tydm but please don’t use the Packers vs Steelers as an example. Everyone knows you have to pass against the Steelers. No one runs the ball well against them. It’s about matchups. Against us the Packers ran the ball well and often. And that’s the difference, they run or pass according to the opponent. Not us, we pass regardless of who it is. We’ll send our QB to throw the ball 50 times against the worst rushing defense in the league e.g. Eagles vs Raiders in 2009. That’s the difference so using matchups of other teams makes no sense. How well did the Packers run against us, ATL and Chicago? But again, I won’t harp like tydm but what he says does have validity. You need balance. Just because Green Bay didn’t have balance against a team that no one runs the ball well against doesn’t mean that the Eagles need to throw the ball as much as we do.

Yeah the front office is a joke. Regardless we need key free agents and a decent draft. I would like to get Pouncy & maybe Heyward. However knowing the Eagles they will screw it up. Trade Kolb for some picks and maybe a player??…..Minnesota needs a Qb and we could use Edwards…..works for me…..
