Da’Quan Bowers Has Unlimited Potential And Could Be First Pick

Defensive end Da’Quan Bowers of Clemson has unlimited potential.   He lived up to his potential in 2010 while leading the nation in sacks with 15.5 and 26 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.  He’s very raw in his pass rushing techniques.  The youngster prefers to bull rush and overpower blockers which is fine on the college level, but won’t work nearly as well on the next level.

I would compare him to a young Michael Strahan, who was a great pass rushing and run stopping defensive end for the Giants.  Bowers, like Strahan is so strong in his upper and lower body that he can overpower men who outweigh him by 50 or 75 pounds.  He can play the power game and he can play the speed game depending on the opponent.

With a year or two of good coaching he’ll be impossible to block one-on-one.

PASS RUSHER: The combination of size and burst off the ball makes gives him a serious upside.  Add to that a insatiable desire to get to the passer and you have  the makings of a great NFL pass rusher.

That’s a plus and a minus.  It’s a minus because he must be taught and needs the time to perfect a number of pass rushing techniques.  It’s a positive because his potential is off the chart.  The fear of Bowers unleashing his raw power on a bull rush or his raw speed on a speed rush outside will set up classic arm under, arm over, spin moves or combinations of the above.

On occasion he does use an arm over, but he’ll be nearly impossible to stop once he develops a plethora of moves.

I would like to see him learn how to tackle the football, when he gets the opportunity.  He needs to learn that turnovers are an extremely important part of the NFL game.

RUN DEFENSE:  He needs to improve in getting rid of blockers on running plays.  I like the way he gets his hands on the blockers, but he lets them hang onto him rather than getting rid of them and making the tackle.  Again, I would like him improve his tackling by dropping his seat and driving through ball carriers when he gets the chance.

PURSUIT: I like the way he pursues to the ball, when he wants to which is most of the time, but not all of it.  He’s very active on plays away from him.  Bowers speed allows him to be more dominating if he will commit to hustle on every play.

Final word: He’s a three down defensive end who could a perennial All-Pro.    belongs with a 4-3 team in order to reach his potential.

If the Panthers pick 1st which I think they should trade down will pick Nick Fairley. In Bowers first 2 years no one had ever heard of him. I think talent wise AJ Green should be the #1 but no ones willing to take a first pick on a WR

I really see a trade out the #1 Spot for the PAnthers for a couple of reasons
#1) They have many needs across the entire team
#2) They have no 2nd Round PIck (#33 overall) which was traded last yes in a Draft Day trade with the NE Patriots
#3) They are cheap with their $$$ and probably don’t want to pay a big $$$ guarantee contract to a #1 Overall Pick that they command

The Eagles with 9 picks and with some veteran players to possibly trade along the DL (Like a DT M Patterson or a DE J Parker) could be a possibility..
If Eagles Sent their 1st Pick (#23 Overall) their 3rd Rd Pock # (#85 Overall)
and starting DT Mike Patterson may be intruinging for both teams..
The Panthers basically get 3 good-sold players with Patterson, and the #23 and #85 Overall picks to help with all their needs and it would cost them less $$$ than the #1 Overall Pick would cost them…

Bowers was the #1 high school player and now is the #1 pro prospect. He hasn’t just appeared or surprised anyone. I don’t follow high school recruits, but ESPN the magazine just did the last 25 years of the top high school players and how well they did. Bowers is the guy from a few years back.
