Should The Sixers Fire Basketball Analyst Eric Snow?

I was on 610-WIP earlier this morning and was asked by Angelo Cataldi about Philadelphia 76ers basketball analyst Eric Snow going to sleep on the air. The morning talk show host asked me if I thought Snow should be fired for going to sleep on the air.

I told him I didn’t think so, but who I am I to answer that question because I’ve gone to sleep on the air myself on 610-WIP. I have to admit it. Yes the situation was a bit different with it being late at night and few people in the room or in the building and a small audience listening and not sure why there was a moment or two of silence. It still was just as unprofessional and unacceptable as what Snow did.

I may be biased in my opinion but I don’t think Eric Snow should be fired because of the years of good will that he has built in his time as a player for the Sixers. I remember the kind of person Snow was during the Sixers run to the NBA Finals. Allen Iverson was the team’s star, but Eric Snow was the team’s leader.

He was a selfless hero that I admired. I saw Eric lead that team and overcome different issues which came up when Iverson’s ego grew out of control. Many times head coach Larry Brown, who was tough to deal with as well, didn’t have the patience or words to say to get Iverson to stop pouting and get his focus on back on what it took to win.

Snow would be the intermediary. He would talk to Iverson and then talk to Brown in order to persuade them to continue working together for the same goal. He sold them on the fact that they needed each other.

Brown is a great though troubled coach, who is never content with his basketball team. He’s like many guys who are always looking for the next conquest. The next girl always is more attractive than the woman they’re with at the present time. Brown has a roving eye when it comes to basketball teams.

Dealing with a temperamental head coach like Brown and a egomaniacal star like Iverson was no easy task, but I saw Snow do what it took to win.

Iverson carried the team offensively, but the rest of the team had to play defense, rebound and contribute offensively when called upon to do so. It was a dysfunctional team in a dysfunctional environment, but they made it to the NBA Finals because of guys like Eric Snow, who made it work.

He didn’t care how many shots he got, or whether he got any credit from the media, he just cared about winning. Snow embodies the type of unselfish team-first attitude which Doug Collins is building on the Sixers. Snow knows what it takes to win in the NBA and that’s why he’s the best guy to be the analyst for the Sixers games.

I believe he needs to apologize to his colleagues and those in charge, then promise that it won’t happen again. Going forward he needs to commit to do the best job he can from here on out.

I don’t care what he has done as a player. He is an awful announcer. I could care less that he fell asleep on air, but the fact that he is so awful at doing his job now should get him fired.

Cause what he’s done for the org. shouldnt matter in the decision making process?Thats a solid decision making process you got there man.

Eric Snow is the best color guy they’ve had in many seasons. Todd and Donyell man!!?They were horrible. They upgraded this year and now cause the dude snoozed for a sec or two then he should be fired? What kinda b.s. no nosense, compassion lacking, egotistical, right wing, moronic, elementry thinkin is that?

Apologize too the fans and clown on yourself for it. Maybe the dude had a personal issue that made him lose sleep. Get over it.He’s a good man…deserves the pass.

man he had no jumper though!!!!

I’d fall asleep too. The 6ers are pointless to watch. They have 0 chance of winning a title this year or in the next several years.

He’s pretty bad anyway. Mark Z isn’t much better. His cliche’s gets very old. I used to like him, but it’s really annoying to hear the same phrases all game long.

“locking all windows and doors”
“shot clock unplugged”
“unfinished business”

@ mugzy….??

I guess you really haven’t been paying attention to the Sixers at all this season. Collins has this team playing well. There are definately reasons to watch the team. I guess I would agree, that with the way the NBA is now set up, there are only a handful of teams that have a group of stars that can win a championship, but this Sixers team is worth watching.

Snow should not have fallen asleep, but with this being his first year, and as far as we know, his first “sleeping” offense, he should be discplined but not fired. There does seem to be some friction between he and Mark Z on the air. Hopefully they can work that out, but compared to the last few years, there are definately reasons to watch this team.

They’re playing better, but have a 10% chance of getting out of the first round and a 0% chance of winning the East… so what’s the point?

Not to mention, they have a 0% chance of winning the east for the next 2, 3 years…. so what’s the point?

Unless the new CBA lets teams clear out their cap space like the NHL did a few years back, the 6ers a screwed for many, many years.

College b-ball and sixers…its sports so theres your point too watch.

Like any of us would do anybetter then either of these guys. Always funny to hear soemone cry about an announcer and there ability to do there job. Like they know less about the given sport then you do.Turn it down and blast some cuts man!!

Marky Z’s cliches old!!! Go to the senior center grandpa….bingo’s starting and the old goldies have American Idol on the 22.

And to answer your question to what is the point.

If you have followed every Philly team for life its a hobby watching every team compete. And the Sixers do that. And to be honest t.v. is geared too women and dudes who like mindless comedy performed by sitcom actors. So besides educational t.v….Sixers/FLyers.Rep Philly.

Something is weird with Eric. What’s with all those games that he’d miss in the beginning of the season from being “under the weather?” And now falling asleep on the air? I don’t wanna speculate but it sounds just like the artie lang/howard stern show saga from a couple of years ago. We know how that turned out.

Also, I think they would fire Eric if a replacement was that easy. I don’t think they gave him the job in the first place because of his exceptional skills. How many people are really willing to do it?

Right…cause a retired proffesional b-ball player who’s a stand up guy has alot in common with a repeat rehab goin dope head who does stand up. And him missing time certainly speaks to usage of heroin and booze.Stop dude.

Plenty of ex players and analysts would jump at the spot dude. They gave him the job because he was better then the others who interviewed?Maybe?

Go phills…this is beat. They fire him and i’ll take personal offense.Messing with my quality of Sixers viewage…just getting used too him.

@mugsy….”so whats the point?”……kinda the same thought I have when I see that you post something.

The point is, if you are a fan of philly sports, you have an interest. I was a big NBA fan through the 70’s, 80’s & ’90’s but the game has changed so much that in general it can be difficult to watch. Regardless, I will still have an interest in the sixers and want to see them do well. The fact that you think this team isn’t worth watching right now tells me that you aren’t a sixers fan to begin with…maybe you like to follow them only during championship seasons, but this team is full of reasons to watch right now.

PW…where are you when I need you on this one man??

Can Collins coach and do the play-by-play/commentary? He was the best in the business before taking the 76ers gig. I miss listening to him during games.

I liked Snow as a player (love the fact that he went from being a 3rd string guy in Seattle to a starter for the Sixers). I think he is awful as a color commentator. I think he is better than the last few, but I really think the Sixers should bring back Steve Mix. I’m not sure why they parted ways with “the Mayor”, or why they declined to hire him as an assistant when he recently interviewed. I love watching the 76ers, but have hated the last few color guys.

To RTB,
This current Sixer Team is the most exciting group they have had in the last 10 years, they are not going to make a Deep Playoff/Championship Run anytime soon, but they are a far improvement of what they have been in recent years.. You may as well enjoy them while they are playing well. Need another big man (or 4 or 5) and another pure 3 point shooter and replace the bench with better athletes than Kapono,Nocioni,Songalia,
and maybe add a rebounding, tough guy who brings a little pyhsicality to the team..

Like I said, Kobe or Lebron. They need to get in their cars and go to the surrounding parks more often.
