Vick & Kolb: Are We Getting Rid Of The Wrong Quarterback?

Notice that in the Dave Spadaro interview of Andy Reid about Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick, no questions were posed to Reid about Kolb’s negatives. Only Vick’s negatives were talked about.

You would figure if Vick is the starter and a Pro Bowl quarterback who led the Eagles to the playoffs, and Kolb was benched because of Vick, that there must be some negatives about Kolb that stopped him from being the team’s starter. There’s no conversation about Kolb’s negatives.

You rarely read anything about Kolb’s negatives in local papers. Here’s one of the comments Reid made about Kolb.

“I mean, this guy is a helluva football player” Reid said. “You look at his numbers and the things he did when he had the opportunity to start, and you start six or seven games and you’re the NFC Offensive Player of the Week twice, and all the 300-yard games he put together and the way he commands the offense and all these things, you’re not in a big hurry to get rid of Kevin Kolb.”

If he was so good then why did Reid sit him down.

On the other hand Reid is forced to admit that Vick has to do a better job against the blitz next season.

“Do we need to do a better job with the blitz? Absolutely,” Reid said. “All of us, not just Michael. We all have to do a better job there. It will be a good challenge for us all. It reminds me of the Super Bowl year. We went into the offseason (after the Super Bowl), there were a couple of blitzes we needed to work on there and we were able to work them out and get them straight and we fixed them.

“It’s a fixable problem. We kind of look forward to the challenge of fixing it and then having somebody come in and try it against us.”

If you hadn’t seen the past season play out, you would think that we should keep Kolb and trade Vick. This either shows that this was an interview done by paid Eagles staff for the sole purpose of showcasing Kolb or there’s uneven coverage of the two quarterbacks.

Kolb is the younger of the two and will get the Eagles value in a return trade. Vick is much better and gives the Eagles a shot at a SB.

G, I actually don’t have a problem with what they said. I just think it’s more of a ploy to not talk about any of Kolb’s negatives because they want to trade him. You just can’t expect to get a 1st round pick for a guy and then simply list everything that’s wrong with him. And since Vick is the guy they are going forward with Andy will talk about the things he needs to do better as well as the rest of the team. He didn’t say anything there that wasn’t true and you just don’t shed negative light on a guy you want to trade. Just my thoughts.

Away from this exchange I think there is uneven coverage of the QBs though. And that mostly has to do with the fact people just don’t like Vick. Plain and simple. Sure it may be irresponsible reporting but it is what it is. Ever since Kolb got drafted he’s been talked about in our local media like he was better than McNabb and now Vick. Many of them want Kolb to be good and they think if they say it enough it will magically happen. Some have been acting like Kolb is the greatest QB to ever put on a Eagles jersey. But when you don’t like the personality of the staple of your organization and don’t like the most talented player on the team as a perfect, it’s easy for people to paint such a rosey picture about Kolb, no matter how inaccurate it is.

Well the media is the media and that will never change when Vick wins the superbowl they will say something stupid like any qb could have won with this team. It does not matter what they say or what they don’t say about Vick turn on NFL network ( which I am going to Boycott as of today until lockout is over ) all of the analysis say the same thing Kolb tape don;t lie and he is not where he should have be and he would have to be in a perfect system to succeed. So let them sell him all they want I hope Buffalo gives us their pick or he can go to Cleveland or Bengals. Now if the Eagles don’t want Vick I guarantee you he will get whatever he wants in salary if he goes on the open market. Michael is happy in Philly he is comfortable for his family and himself and that says a lot. So they can talk up Kolb all they want, but the film does not lie and people will watch the film. I hope he goes because he did not show me anything in 2009 or 2010 he is a good back up and that is it. Bye Bye Kolb.

Thats Reids spin on it but the media has been doing this for years. The Iversons, Howards, McNabbs and Cunninghams of the world always get criticized while the Utleys and Runyons of the world get free passess. Utley is a warrior he runs hard down the first base line.lol Runyon is a warrior he only gave up 3 sacks to Strahan but played him even. lol D Jax is next we know its coming.

Until people refuse to listen to the junk and tell them about themselves they will continue to do it. They talk about Newton has character issues. but they never mention Ryan Mallet’s drug issues. They always do this, they covered up the fact that Payton Manning had stalking charges brought against him in Tennessee but that never came out before the draft and it goes on and on.

good question, why did he sit him down and under the circumstances he did it. Reid is a loyal coach, perhaps to a fault. Someone else told him to play Vick, the culmination of a plan a long time ago, to make Vick a starter in the NFL again.

why talk about what the back up needs to do to get better when you are now trying to trade him. Some people here are way too sensitive

G, this is obviously a case of Andy trying to puff up Kolb to sell him high before the draft. C’mon! You gotta see that.

Scorp I totally agree, people in philly wanted kolb to be the man so bad, bc they hated mcnabb so much, a lot of it had to do with his personality he didn’t relate well with the city and as we’ve learned as of late the team too. But some had to do with his play on the field his inaccuracies but the rest was color. Vick is in a similar position but instead he says all the right things the things the fans wanna hear, and his play on the field mirrors that. But yet we still hear all the media still bringing up the dog fighting situation whether during the game or on a sports show. They love to hate him. I can recall even during the probowl vick wasn’t receiving any props for his play during the yr, but all the others were. People love to hate vick and want the “great white hope” to come and save the day and be the posterboy.

Even stevie wonder could see that vick belongs as starter. He had an amazing yr. All highs as a player. But yet we still have people hoping wishing and praying kolb could find a way to be a starter here. Get over it he ll never be starter while vick is here and healthy, and there is only a 3yr difference in there ages (vick 30 kolb 27), if teams wanted vick the eagles would want a 1st and more maybe even 2. So let’s not second guess who should get traded and who shouldn’t its so plain to see that kolb should go

“Amazing”!!! I actually agree 100% with everyone’s comment up until this point, and Eagles Bird Gang; your comments put the “icing on the cake”!

Vick will bring the Lombardi to Philly, I feel it’s destined to come here through #7 whether people/media love him or hate him. Personally, I wouldn’t have picked a better scenario than to have the superbowl win by Philly come through this way. Go Vick; Eagles and Co. Peace

I think you are reaching a little G……

I mean, he says that “we all” need to do a better job with the blitz, you could assume that he was talking about Kevin there as well. He also said “not just Michael”. He is trying to make sure that Mike isn’t singled out, and recognizes it is a team wide thing. He would do that with any STARTER. Notice I said starter. That is the reason he isn’t talking negatively about Kolb. He isn’t the starter. You don’t see him talking negatively about Harrison, Cooper, or any other backups either, because the fact that they are on the bench is a testament to their negatives. They are also trying to trade Kolb, that is the reason for the positive talk. They would talk up anyone they are trying to trade.

To all my Eagle friends look at what the ever loving people over at GQ Mag has done, they have ranked us in their fine magazine, so hear what they have to say:

2 and 1. Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies
The Meanest Fans in America

Over the years, Philadelphia fans have booed Santa Claus, their own star players, and most absurdly, the recipient of America’s very first hand transplant, whose crime was dribbling in a ceremonial first pitch—thrown with his freshly transplanted hand. Boooo! Admittedly, there are some things fans have cheered. Like Michael Irvin’s career-ending neck injury and a fan being tased on the outfield grass. Things reached their nadir last season, when Citizens Bank Park played host to arguably the most heinous incident in the history of sports: A drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl. The truth is this: All told, Philadelphia stadiums house the most monstrous collection of humanity outside of the federal penal system. “Some of these people would boo the crack in the Liberty Bell,” baseball legend Pete Rose once said. More likely, these savages would have thrown the battery that cracked it.

For the record I read the article listing of the other top 15, and us Eagle Philly fans are not as bad as some of the fans listed as being better fans, I mean one university is famed for get this “Arson” and not just a couple either.

Still there is something that is rugged and dirty about the philadelphia culture that visitors get uneased about. I think they call it attitude.

Anyway check it out. I like being a tough crowd be we are not criminal like other fans on the list.

Did miss something? What’s the issue? Kolb is gone and vick is the future. Slow eagles day…. I’m surprised there wasn’t a comment on here about Mcnabb… That usually gets the blog hits up. In all honesty…. Good point G. Just more proof the clipboard holder is on the way out.

We want to maximize Kolb’s value in trade. He’s on the bench for a reason, and this is a non-story. You know that Spadaro was given his questions, or told which questions to use in the posted interview. I want it to be uneven right now so that we can get top value for a lifetime backup who’s only proven that he knows how to throw pick 6’s as much as touchdowns. Really, weren’t we 2-3 with Kolb as the starter this year?

Yes, let’s have them talk about all of Kolb’s negatives – hit him and he’ll throw to the other team, master of the one yard dump off, is “accurate”, yet an under 60% thrower in game situations, has scored almost as many points for the opposition as he has for the home team – so that we can get a solid 4th rounder to use on the next top ten pick who had reconstructive knee surgery in the offseason.

G:
Two things: 1) Vick just signed a big contract, 2) the Eagles may not be able to even entertain trade talks for Kolb regarding this season’s draft. Reid’s keeping Kolb’s chin up. At least that’s my take. And Vick is getting lauded throughout the country. Mohrningwheg has him as perhaps the best of all time!
Get off this unfair to black QB’s thing will you, G? You’ve been shown the money given to them. Enough already. The axe has been ground.

Don’t care as much about whether we’re trading the wrong QB as much as I care that we’re keeping the wrong head coach.

Jake

If it was planned all along to make Vick a starter, why didn’t Reid just name him the starter after McNabb was traded? At the very minimum, Reid could have said that Kolb and Vick would compete for the starting job during training camp. It did neither Reid nor the organization one bit of good to have the scenario play out the way it did.

It wasn’t Reid’s plan, it was Lurie’s and his band of thieves, owners, who profit much from Vick as a marquee in the league, and amen drum on keeping the wrong coach

How quickly we all forget..
Vick during his 1st Season with the Eagles showed a lot of rust and was very indecisice in his play which should be expeted with the long layoff that he had..
Even look back at last Years Summer Camp and Pre-season Game.. Was there anything in VIcks game that truly impressed anyone… I remember a couple of scrambles vs the Jagaurd and Jets in Preseason and that’s about it.. So anyone who says , I knew Vick was going to play well and should have been the starter all along is just full of it.. the Eagles and Coach AR/MM caught some major lightning in a bottle and if it wasn’t for Kolbs slow progress and struggles in Preseason himself, who knows if VIck would have gotten the call

If you can recall vick didn’t play much in this past preseason, the eagles saw that vick was outplaying kolb in training camp they just had to play it down because they wanted to come out looking like the good guys giving kolb a chance when all along they knew vick was looking good and this wasn’t the plan for vick to start, it was supposed to be kolbs job

They wanted kolb to be there starter but vick outplayed him in camp then ultimately on the field in game. That’s why we didn’t see vick in the 2nd half of the last pre season game because andy didn’t want to hear the media or anyone else saying “vick should be starting over kolb”. Believe me they didn’t expect vick to take off like he did. Remember they tried to trade him in the off season but noone wanted him. So again they wanted kolb as there started but vick forced there hand by out playing kolb in camp and on the field
