How The Bin Laden Story Broke Inside Citizen’s Bank Park

It was 10:25 pm the Phillies offense wasn’t providing much entertainment, so I did what most Phillies fans under age 30 do at boring Phillies games, checked Facebook.

I saw a status of a friend that read “president has a big announcement at 10:30 pm”

I turned to my friend and told him what I saw, and we instantly concluded the world is going to end. We were sure it was an asteroid.

Ten minutes later I saw on my cnn.com app that Bin Laden was killed. I yelled out to my entire section “Bin Laden is Killed we got him!”

Phillies fans in my section turned and looked at the usher as if to signal I had one too many. One mother even covered her child’s ears and looked at me in disgust.

A few moments later a few sections in right field attempted to get a USA chant going, but it was to no avail, the majority of the stadium was still perplexed. The consensus among people who had yet to hear the news about Bin Laden, thought it was just a bunch of drunk idiots chanting USA for no rhyme or reason.

Phillies second basemen Pete Orr looked the most confused, I saw him looking back at right field at the fans chanting USA, and in my opinion he had to be thinking “what the hell is going on?”

A few moments later the left field bleachers attempted to get a USA chant going, Orr looked over at left field then back at right and from my view in the stands he was even more confused.

The inning ended and between innings the USA chant picked up steam, and by the time the Phillies began to bat the stadium erupted “USA…USA…USA…”

The death of Osama Bin Laden turned what would have been the most boring baseball game I ever attended into one of the most memorable.
