NFL Teams Which Could Battle The Eagles For Plaxico Burress

You could see and hear that Drew Rosenhaus had coached his client, Plaxico Burress, before they stepped before the mics this morning after he was released from jail. Burress did his part by assuring all the would be suitors that he will be ready to play football shortly.

“As far as football is concerned, if and when everything gets settled, when they get back on the field, I’ll be ready,” he said.

Rosenhaus then tried to present the picture of Burress being a changed man. It sounds like Burress will volunterring to play special teams for his new squad.

“He’s learned an awful lot,” Rosenhaus said. “He knows that he obviously made a mistake. To miss two NFL seasons in the prime of your career. To not be with your family, most importantly. To lose out on millions and millions of dollars. These are things that have forced him to certainly evaluate his life.”

S.I.’s Peter King believes the Eagles, Jets and Raiders will show interest in Burress. I wouldn’t be surprised if another team or two gets involved.

NFL teams which could show interest in Burress:

Philadelphia Eagles – The Birds don’t have a proven big physical receiver. Riley Cooper is a youngster with great size and potential, but he’s unproven. The Eagles have struggled in the red zone and their number one receiver, DeSean Jackson is anything but a big, physical red zone target. The addition of Burress would immediately solve some problems in red zone and give Cooper a receiver, whose game he can try to emulate.

New York Jets – The Jets could use Burress opposite Santonio Holmes if they’re not able to sign Braylon Edwards. Holmes would be the deep threat and Burress would be the possession receiver. He would be a good fit in the west coast offense and be difficult to stop as they incorporate their strong running game and play action pass attack. After a run fake, it would be nearly impossible for the linebackers to stop Burress from getting open over the middle.

Oakland Raiders – They have talent at the wide receiver position, but all of them are raw and young. They could use a veteran like Burress to give them some consistency. He would be the best route runner on the team and give the Raiders quarterbacks somebody they could rely on.

Cleveland Browns – Plaxico would be a major help for young Colt McCoy in Cleveland because you could throw the ball to the 6’5″ Burress even when he’s covered. It would give McCoy one sure target any time he got in trouble. In much the same way that Eli Manning did, he could throw the ball up to Burress when he got in trouble. The height, tremendous arm length and leaping ability allows him to catch the ball whether somebody’s on him or not.

New England Patriots – Bill Belichick will probably avoid taking the chance with Burress after things blew up with Randy Moss, but Burress’ size would be a nice combination with the quickness of Wes Welker in the slot and those outstanding young tight ends, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. As the Jets showed us in the playoff game, they still need to get more speed at wide receiver position.

Carolina Panthers – I could see the Panthers teaming up Burress with the blazing Steve Smith on the other side in order to give Cam Newton a chance to do something in his first year. Smith would force the safeties to back up and Burress could make them pay inside. In the red zone, the threat of Newton tucking it under his arm, the Panthers running game and Burress as an end zone target could be difficult to stop.

Why not give him a shot at right field on the phillies squad? great hand and eye coordination and he has a spanish/baseball like name.. I think he would be perfect in baseball but in football he aint ever gonna go back to what he was…Dude wasnt even a top 10 WR in his prime.

it’s only a battle if the Eagles want to sign him, and so far the only suggestion of that is from Plax, Rosenhaus, and the media. I hate the smell of speculation in the morning….

I see no real reason why the Eagles will jump into any “battle” for A 34 Year Old WR who hasn’t played in over 2 Years.. Do I think He could help this team, probably could, but they Draft R Cooper last year to become the Red-Zone big Target and a 4th WR to come in for 10-15 Snaps a game.. I don’t think the Eagles are too interested thouhh they may talk to him, they have many other positions to upgrade and figure out who they want to pursue.. This Eagle Offense has set a scoring Record for the last 2-3 Seasons in a row, I think they will concentrate on the Defensive SIde of the Ball at CB/DE/ and maybe even LB (Depending if Bradley leaves via Free-agency or remains an Eagle which is not a given)

Pete60, let me clarify. Andy Reid has done a pretty bad job with time management. And Reid doesn’t pander to the fans. Andy Reid has not won a superbowl with the Eagles. Yep. And you’re angry about it. OK. But now you’re criticizing him for being a control freak, as a HEAD COACH? In a PRO sport? When we all know hat Banner, Lurie, Roseman have a lot of influence, and Reid just brought in two very ‘stubborn (as haters call having a conviction to your beliefs as coach in football)’ assistant coaches. You see how your hate has caused you to talk like a fool?

It’s like if people called hitler an indecisive, lazy, poor public speaker who couldn’t grow a mustache for his life and who was unable to state what he believed in. If someone said that, I’d say it’s ridiculous utter bullcrap, but that doesn’t mean I’d be supporting anything he stands for or believes in. And it certainly wouldn’t mean that I was ‘towing his company line’.

EXAMPLE OF FAT BOYS ARROGANCE AND UNPROFESSIONALISM

“That pact was breached.”

Reid refused to talk about the injury yesterday, stating only that Bradley “did not practice today.” This is not the first time Reid has stonewalled the media, but it might be the most blatant and disrespectful.

One reporter who seemingly isn’t going to take it anymore is CSN Philly’s Ray Didinger, who wrote:
I didn’t realize that coming to the Eagles’ training camp meant I was working for Andy Reid. I thought I was here as a reporter. Silly me. Well, that’s OK. Andy set me straight after Monday’s practice.

We’re expected to take orders from him — all of us in the media. We’re supposed to do what we’re told. If we don’t, there will be consequences. Reid made that very clear.

Football coaches are all about control, I understand that. And the Eagles are all about controlling the message. I get that, too. But Reid’s handling of the Bradley injury was outrageous. It was more than arrogant, it was unprofessional.

Pman, to comment on your first post at the top, you said they drafted riley cooper to be a red zone threat.(he did a bang up job on that last play that ended our season didnt he?). I digress… but didnt they draft kolb with the same intentions? To replace mcnabb and to be the guy, well that obviously didnt happen bc they brought Vick to town. So the eagles now have a history of doing this. With that said, they can and i feel will bring in Plaxico and they will sign him, and eventually we may begin to say riley who? Even though i feel he has alot of potential hes nowhere near the level plaxico is when 100%…

Another poster said Plaxico could teach riley things, which could be good but think of it this way, plaxico since being out of the game fo the last two years has just extended his football career so expect him to play for a few more years than would be the normal expectancy… So hed probably love nothing more than to take someones spot, if he could hed like deseans maclins avants anybodys in an effort to be on the field more and to get more balls thrown to him. Thats the position at WR…

He definitely has changed (prison for a month let alone 2 years can do that to you) but he still wants to play the game at a high level and if hes 100% back to him self which i think he will be being that hes playing the easiest position in football, hed want to start or be out there alot… So helping riley cooper wouldnt be a top priority for him it probably wont even be on his mind hes just trying to get on the field and win games…

To JH,
I don’t see the Eagles moving to acquire Plex at all, they have too many other positions that need upgrading and are moving forward with a young roster and not looking back at players like Plex,Asmo,etc,etc.. They are building for 2012 Season since this 2011 is going to end up a crap shoot the longer this lockout stays in effect..

John, clearly you REALLY REALLY REALLY want them to sign Plax. We get it. Hey, enjoy the excitment and if it happens, good, be happy. But what you neglect to realize is that they don’t need him, and he solves a problem that doesn’t exist. Redzone offense was not that big of a problem for the birdz last year. They were right in the middle of the league in those rankings, and their offense was quite prolific. OL needs improvement (hopefully Watkins helps, and I’d love another RT signing), but I don’t think anyone is reasonably worried about the O with young studs continuing to develop.

So ride this Plax buzz all you want – clearly it makes you happy and that’s great. But don’t expect everyone else to be as high on it as you are because frankly, it’s a cherry on the top – but we’re hungry, it’s the sunday most fans concern about, cherry or no cherry

I wouldnt be suprised if the eagles traded Riley Cooper to St. Louis for a draft pick and get Plex in the process……. When they traded Brandon Gibson i was a bit shocked…… St. Louis needs a WR……. I think that with the relationship of Vick and Plex…… Vick could handle the pressure more than a young Qb like Cam Newton or Mark Sanchez or Cleveland Browns with Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford…….. He’ll be with an experience Qb like Vick or Tom Brady…….. He only has 2 options……. NE or PHI in my book…….

Redzone wasn’t a problem last year? Be real. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard on here in a long time. I’m not going to go by stats because stats can be skewed at time.

Even with ALL of our defensive problems last year, not being able to score TOUCHDOWNS in the redzone is what cost us what could easily have been a 14-2, 13-3 season.

schiller

June 7, 2011 11:45 am

birdo – so you’re saying that you felt like/perceived that it was a problem? Ok, call it like you see it (as I’m sure you do/will). And yes, with more touchdowns, maybe the Eagles would have had a better record, but they got into the playoffs. They lost when Vick threw a pick and the D wasn’t helping too much…. that’s that.

I say, yeah, you always want to improve in all areas, but our Defensive redzone issues, D as a whole are problems. Scoring touchdowns, was a strength for the Eagles last year.

BirdoBeamen

June 7, 2011 12:13 pm

Scoring TD’s against teams like the Bears and Vikings last year would have helped tremendously in winning the game and getting homefield throughout the playoffs. In the grand scheme of things, it didn’t matter because we lost to the Packers at home…..but like I said many months ago, the winner of the Packers/Eagles game were going home as Super Bowl Champions.

Funny that you used Vick throwing a pick at the end when in reality, Riley Cooper just got abused by Tramon Williams — the reason the need for Burress is even a discussion is because of that play. That play culminated our number one problem on the offensive end. Plaxico would have never let that happen — just ask Sheldon Brown.

Jon – When I read the first couple sentences you just posted, I was going to formulate a response around the point that you’re probably lumping previous years in with last year – something many Eagles fans do – hold on to problems after they begin to resolve. But you made my point for me – “…the past what 5 years”. See you are saying we’ve had the problem for the past five years. Yeah, with McNabb, without DJax and Mac being established, with a declininc Westbrook and no McCoy, with the Andrews bros. problems… etc etc etc… we DID have redszone issue in the recent past, but not nearly as much with THIS O. And with Watkins/OL improvement, more development from Shady, 10, 18, 87, 81,….cooper….. It’s just not accurate to suggest that last year was as bad as the redzone problems for the past 5 years, but you’re not looking at it as a last year thing. You’re assuming that our problems over the past 5 carried into last year and will carry into this year.

Jon Hart

Paul, they do have other needs but when you have the opportunity to add a player of his caliber you gotta jump at that, you keep saying hes 34 so the eagles wont want him but this is a very unique situation.. yes hes 34 but his body hasnt had to endure the beating on it the past 2 years, hes healthy so at this point all he needs is strength and conditioning…

You mentioned them not going after Nnamdi, so what other corner is worth the time thats available? The eagles have the money to spend, and dont have a problem investing in a position of need such as corner, d end, Oline etc.. they have history of doing that so its not out of the realm of a strong possibility that they could attack Free agency and come away with a Nnamdi and a Burress and a new contract for desean…

Schiller, im telling you this, listen closely. We have no proven guy on this roster that is known for scoring on a reguar basis in the redzone. Unless its vick on a qb keeper, we have noone else. Desean is too small, maclin is unproven, maybe this will be the yr but again isnt proven, avant no, celek our starting tight end should be the main target in the red zone(Like chad lewis was for us all those years) but he hasnt been.. riley cooper is unproven as well… I want you schiller to make a list of proven red zone threats on this team…

I think they bring in Veteran CB Carlos Rogers to bridge a 2-3 Year gap
until both LIndley & Marsh are up to speed.. Rogers won’t cost 1/4 of Asmo and is a good Red/Zone Cover CB who is physical and plays the run well and would be a good mentor to Lindley/MArsh, plus Rogers has playerd in the NFC East his entire career with the Redsksins, so he know the Teams, the opposing WR’s, their style of play, the weather, etc, etc as well as anoyone else does and in a shortent camp season, this would be very helpful to get him up to speed to be ready to be the Starter on Opening Game.. Then the Eagles could use some of their $$$ on a good DE and possibly OLB and then make sure to have long-term deals in place with Vick/D-JAx/McCoy..

J, the problem is that ‘proven’ in the way you’re saying it is subjective. I say that Celek, Avant, and Maclin ARE proven redzone targets. They’re not the best in the game at it – see Fitzgerald, Hines Ward, etc…. but they all have scored consitently in the RZ. You have to factor in that Celek wasn’t used in the passing game last year nearly as much as before, a lot of it due to blocking/bad oline play..etc.. Avant, has had very good RZ production, sure dropping a few here and there, but the man catches ALMOST everything thrown his way, and that includes Dmac’s foot throws.

By ‘proven’ you are really saying ‘sexy/big name/stud’ – you’re all googly-eyed about Plax right now. I get that. But we have RZ weapons on the team right now. McCoy catching out of the backfield is another. And Dion Lewis would be a great RZ runner, especially if we upgrade the interior OL – oh wait, we got Watkins…

Rogers does have poor hands which probably has kept him from the Pro-Bowl the last few years.. You can’t have everything..
With this lockout and looming shortened CAmp Season and possible delay to the 2011 Season and with the Eagles having so many young players on their Roster of 3 years and less in the NFL, I just don’t see them going all out and acquiring a Asmo, HAynesworth, Plex and other older players.. It just doesn’ tfit the Pattern.. Unless this lockout is ended soon, I think this 2011 Season is a work in progress for most of the NFL where they are going to play the young players more to see what they have.. I think the Eagles bag their 2011 Chances and play their young players with an eye on 2012/2013 and beyond and stay away from acquiring any big off-season Free-agent ..
Take a look at th Steelers, PAckers, when was they last time these teams signed a big-name Free-Agent.. New DC Castillo with his cast of Characters will rebuild this Defense with young, fresh, fast and hungry players…

Reid if he is such a good friend as everyone claims he is must make Castillio’s job much more easier…….. what Reid must do is get Nnamdi…….. ANd help MM on offense as well because I know he wants another HC job in the near future…….. So why not get Plex to help him out……

Jobs that maybe avaliable for HC positions:

NYG……… This is the last wheel for Tom Coughlin
PHI………… Andy Reid could be elsewhere if nothing happens this season
CINCY…….. Marvin Lewis is on the hot seat…… If nothing happens he could be fired
TEXANS…… Kubiak could be on the hot seat……. Too much talent on the roster but no playoff apperences
WSH……. False teeth aka Mr. Ed mouth could be on his way out if nothing happens with the Redskins…… The same with Jim Zorn…… How they loved him in WSH but he didnt last long…….

When we win it this season……. We could be looking to see if MM or Juan Castillio getting new positions as a HC…….. That would be something to see!!!!!

Schiller, you made a general statement without answering the question. Who is the eagles red zone threat on this team? Who will teams fear when the eagles get in the red zone? you know why the eagles struggled the most in the red zone, its because theyre a big play offense that is largely predicated on long pass plays so they rarely have to be in the redzone consistently so when theyre in it they struggle to score, they have smallish type receivers that are best on long pass plays in the open field

Again youve yet to name 1 proven red zone threat, you know why because they dont have one. Did we have issues in the red zone with chad lewis and TO here? NO. You keep talking about the Oline, its not only about the Oline its about them not having physically imposing players that can create space and seperation in the red zone, bottom line!

We need Plaxico Burress

Jon, I named 3, Celek, Avant, and Maclin. I did that. It’s clear as day.

You clearly mean a different thing – you want an all out stud big target with a flashy name. You want that ‘fear’ – I say, ditch the Madden/ESPN overexagerration. F fear. I want touchdowns. Celek, Maclin, Avant, and McCoy have proven that they can produce in the redzone. They get touchdowns. Fear doesn’t score 6 points, touchdowns do.

You just want the flashy guy – you want Plax. (we already know that)

Schiller, your taking my words too literal. I said fear in regards to who will teams have to seriously account for when the birds r in the red zone, you love numbers so as was evident last year the eagles have certainly had struggles in the red zone with the current guys here. Last year and the year before that have been red zone trouble years.

Tell me why the eagles were middle of the pack last year? Because they have no real threat in the red zone. Chad lewis wasnt a big name. But he was extremely effective down there. Your trying to use my words to twist things which isnt working… Just admit we could use Plaxico big time…

To say we need Plaxico Burress is a bit much! Could we use him, yes, if his skills are still at a high level…But to say we need Plaxico, when the Eagles offense is the most potent in the NFL…Eagles struggle in the red zone, because we dont have a major running attack in the red zone…The same rules apply, if you can run the ball, it will open up passing lanes…if you do not run the ball when the field is shortened, scoring by pass will be less likely…The fact of the matter is, we need a way to get into the endzone by runnning the ball….if we can do that then the red zone effeciency will improve…

Jon, We could not use Plaxico BIG TIME. It would be a plus, but one that is not greatly needed. Celek Avant Maclin and McCoy are effective in the redzone. we were middle of the pack (14 out of 32)0 there last year becuase of oline issues, play calling and less redzone attempts/need for it (when we score from far away, that’s a positive TD, but not a redzone stat).

Eagles don’t have a major running attack because HC A Reid and OC MM don’t value a tough, physical running game.. If that mindset doesn’t come from the top, it’s not going to happen and I’ve been saying this for years now which is why Coach AR will never win a SUpper BOwl while Coaching the Philadelphia Eagles.. Playing in the more physcial NFC East and colder weather/outdooe stadiums come DEc and Playoff time, You need to be able to run the ball, and the Eagles quite frankly can’t when it really matters.. It’s a broken rocord, a cliche, a real pain in the ass, but in the end, This is how Coach AR coaches so it is what it is…

Whoa Whoa Whoa Paulman. What da heck are you talking about!? That is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. I’ve been an Eagles fan for a long time, and I watch all the games, keep up with all the news, and fan forums online…etc.. and I have NEVER, EVER heard such an argument. That’s just some wild crazy stuff – nobody would ever imagine such a statement.
