Report: Eagles loading up for a Super Bowl run

We’ve heard a lot of talk from the Eagles this past decade about wanting to win a Super Bowl and trying really hard, and it depends on who you are as to whether you believed them or not. Some people see the acquisitions of Jon Runyan, Jevon Kearse, Terrell Owens and others as them legitimately trying. Critics will say that it doesn’t matter, they’ve never won it all, nor have they tried hard enough.

Well, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Silver, the Eagles are planning to go all in this year for a 2011 Super Bowl run.

This is the year,” an Eagles source said. “We think we have a great shot to win it, and we’re loading up and going for it.”

The source mentioned names such as Plaxico Burress, Albert Haynesworth and even Reggie Bush from the Saints.

Howie Roseman is quoted in the story as well, but he’s always “excited” no matter what the situation (anyone else notice that he uses that word in just about every interview?).

“We need to get this [labor dispute] settled,” Roseman said. “I’m ready for some action – right now.”

Since Roseman isn’t allowed to talk about specific players due to the lockout, it’s entirely possible that he’s the “source” quoted previously. I’m not saying that he is, I’m just saying that it’s possible.

This is just another report during the lockout. Whether or not it ends up being true is anyone’s guess. What says the GCobb.com crowd? Will the Eagles really load up for a run?

It appears that they do have a plan in place and seem to be pretty confident about it. If they get Reggie Bush along with burress haynesworth and Nnamdi, id be beyond joyful. This points to the fact that alot of guys we may think will return that are FAs may very well be let go….

**Hartrodomus Predictions**
Eagles Sign Burress, trade for Haynesworth, sign Nnamdi, geta long term deal for vick and desean, and try to persuade Reggie Bush to the team ending in him picking the eagles over the saints… if i get any of these right iam a genius…

Yes Erock,
C Rodgers from the Redksins would be a great fit, he’s big, physical and would be a real asset in the red-zone.. He knows the NFC East and the NFC Conference as a whole.. He’s 29 years old and would be a great mentor for Lindley/Marsh for down the road and he would only cost the Eagles about 1/6th of what a Asmogoah would cost the Eagles which would free-up resources for Eagles to sign other players or take care of some of their own

Eagles sign Nmadi

Trade Kolb to Arizona for 2nd Round pick and 4th round pick

Eagles sign Burress to a 2 year deal with an out clause.

Eagles acquire Ray Edwards for a 2nd round pick in 2013 and a player to be named.

Paulman is a lot closer to the truth than all these hallucinators and dreamers out there, this is all a bunch of nonsense. These dreamers that think Burress, Nnamdi, Haynesworth, and/or Reggie Bush must be smoking that MILF weed.

Paul is much closer to the truth than this article and anyone that thinks these big ticket/big bozo/big baggage/big bust guys are coming to this city are craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazeeeeeee.

Trade Kolb to Arizona for 2nd Round pick in 2012 and a 2nd Round pick in 2013. ( same trade Texans made for Matt Shuab from Falcons )

Eagles make an offer to Richard Marshall, CB, Panthers or 2010 Pro Bowler Brent Grimes (RFA), CB, Falcons if Grimes is available.

Eagles sign Manny Lawson, OLB, 49ers. Would be a good fit at Sam Linebacker in the 4 – 3.

Eagles sign one of these DE’s to rotate at DE until Graham is healthy. Andre Carter, DE, Redskins or Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Giants. Hard to beleive that they would go out and sign a big time DE like Edwards Babin or Johnson. These 2 players will be cheaper and will be rotaion guys.

Eagles sign Ryan Harris, OT, Broncos

Eagles sign Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Seahawks to back up Mike Vick.

a Couple os issues

Kiwanuka coming off back-surgery, A Carter is older than J Parker,
M HAsselback wans to be a Starter and ends up with Seahawls or goes to the Cardinals, very unlikley he would come to the East coast to be a back-up.
I see the Eagles, once after trading Kolb, signing a Tavaris Jackson, or a Troy Smith and possibly even a Vince Young to be the back up to Vick for a year or 2 until Kafka solidify’s a back-up spot
I do like CB R MArshal and OLB M Lawson you susgest and would be excellent value players who are just hitting their Primes now…
CB Grimes is to small at 5-9′ and the Eagles need a bigger, physcial CB to up versus all the big WR’s they have in the NFC (Nicks,Packers & Cowboys)
Good stuff Sully

We’ll see because a couple years back we had the “pedal to the metal” according to Banner and I’m pretty sure none of us actually saw the demonstration of that. And if they do decide to “go for it” then that would mean they haven’t been and all the FO apologists that have been defending them will look pretty silly.

I’m not too high on Ray Edwards. He played next to the Williams wall and on the other side of Jared Allen and never had double digits sacks. Now granted, he is young and we supposedly have this amazing DL coach who would prolly make him better…but all indications this offseason is that Edwards is looking for a monster deal and I’m over the Eagles overpaying for players on the DLine that aren’t worth it.

For the DL I would like to see the Birds pick up either Cullen Jenkins/Brandon Mebane. If they get Haynesworth it’s not gonna be in a trade. There is no way the Eagles trade for that contract with all those BS that guy comes with. I can see them getting him as a FA for cheap mainly because he wants to play in a 4-3 system (3-4s are dominating the NFL right now).

Stephen Tulloch would be an upgrade here and wouldn’t break the bank on us and we could move Bradley to his natural position.

Then finish it off with Asomugha or Cromartie.

You can’t just simply look at the past decade in FA and assume the Birds wont make any big moves because its not necessarily their style. Their QB is in his 30s and his game depends mainly on the threat of his legs. I’m pretty sure The FO knows they have their best shot to win in the next 2-3 years. On top of that, Reid is feeling the pressure more than ever and will be lucky to be here in 2-3 years if they don’t win a Super Bowl. Following those reasons I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a major splash this year.

pheags, I agree fully. My point was that they believed they were going all out before or at least that’s what they told everyone. So until they actually do it, I don’t care what is said from them or anyone in the media. And you think they didn’t have a aging QB in McNabb a aging RB in Westbrook and a defense that was still good but diminishing before? That didn’t make them go all out for one more shot for McNabb, Dawk and BWest. So using Vick as he’s 30 doesn’t meant anything because they let our aging players down before by not going after top talent. Having said that, I hope they actually do go all out. They just need to stop talking about it and do it. Because what is “going for it” to them may not actually be “going for it” considering how they have been. I’m waiting and seeing.

You mention the only few big name free agents the Eagles have signed over an 11 year period. If a team is far away or rebuilding, big name free agents don’t make sense. The Eagles have had good teams that were a player or two away and signed cheap or injured players who didn’t work out. It has been frustrating to see them so close only to leave an obvious hole that they could have filled and then lose because they needed more help. We’ll see just how serious they are this time. the positive thing is that Reid at least knows his clock will expire here soon.

I can see what you mean but I think there is a slight difference from this team now compared to Bwest/Dawk/McNabb team. I really think they believed the players they had on that team were good enough to win a Super Bowl mainly because the NFC was mostly terrible and especially with a poor NFC East at that time. The FO knew that we were basically in the playoffs every year with a home game and that once your in anything can happen and your leaders would just have to step up and get you over the top.

IN regard to this team, Anybody can realize the superior talent on the Offense right now. But there is no way the Birds can get to the SuperBowl with this Defense esp with the much improved NFC and NFC East. I mean your talking about some big time offenses in GB, ATL, NO, Dallas…assuming the eagles can get through more than one of them to reach the SB is unrealistic. BUT I know, and Im pretty sure the FO knows that by spending their cash on 1 player like Asomoghua would improve the entire D drastically. In a sense, having him and Samuel as you corners might be a benefit in a way to the payroll by being able to have younger, average, cheaper players around them. Juan Castillo could be our safety with corners like that.

June 15, 2011 6:29 pm

I just think a big part of what dictates what the eagles FO/Reid do is the division and NFC. If the cowboys didn’t blow up last year and instead started 5-0 and if the NFC wasn’t as open as it was in the beginning of the year I think for the most part we would of never saw Vick as starter, atleast not as early as we did.

Pheags, good call on Steven Tulloch who would be an awesome pick-up at LB
and could also slide in the Middle too.. If Eagles pick-up a Top LB like Tulloch,Leber,Rudd or a Posluzsky, then Bradley is most likely a goner..The Eagles already have have 4 young LB’s on their Roster that they think highly of in Chaney/Clayton and the 2 they Drafted this year in Matthews and Rolle
DE C Jenkins has had kneww issues and is better suited as a DE in a 3-4 and not a very good match in the Eagles 4-3 scheme unless he was converted to a pass Rusher from a DT spot..
I think with Graham’s injury and probable start of the Season in the PUP list, I would not be surprised to see DT Bunkley get/take some snaps as the DE position as a measure of Depth until Graham gets back,, Also DE P Hunt from Canada is another pass-rusher who should get a lot of snaps in Graham’s abscence… I would add a DT in Coefield or Mebane who would be an upgrade over M Patterson and then trade M Patterson whikle he still has value and a cheap contract and to get a 3rd or 4th Rounder in return from another team whose needs DT (Panthers,Falcons,Seahawks,Broncos)
I would also do the same thing with RT W Justice if I were able to land a good RT in Free-agency which there are not many to choose from.. (T Light, J Gaither,Charles Johnson from the Colts) which I am not sure any of these players are an upgrade over a healthy Justice to begin with..

but…. Paulman said they were skipping this year and getting ready for next year. lol.

Been saying this for MONTHS…. the birds lost alot of salary when Dawk, McNabb and brown fell off the books. They have young talent and are ready to add some big names. I think 2 big names and a couple for depth. The bad part about the article that G cut and pasted from Profootballtalk.com is that it had no cornerback at all on this list. However….. i have said all along that i believe the starting RCB for this team will come in a deal that involves Kolb. Im not saying i waant that but… its what i THINK will happen.

June 15, 2011 7:34 pm

I’ve stated waht Free-agents the EAgles would pursue all Spring and only claim that they would skip this Free-Agency off-season if they strike goes deep into the summer (which still could happen), But if a settlement is within reach (By Earl July) then the Eagles will go with agressive game-plan, but if this Strikes drags into late summer putting SUmmer Camp in jeopardy and the early season, then I think they will pass this “all in” mantra and go with mostly young players which is probably what most teams in the NFL will do,.. resign most of their own free-agents for 1 year deals to get thru a shortened season, camp for the familiarity faactor if nothing else..

For the record, This Eagles Offense isn’t all that Set either
#1) If Eagles Trade QB Kolb, who is back-up and can learn this Eagles System quickly and efficiently while Kafka gets more up to speed..Who takes snaps and leads the Offense if Vick goes down for a couple of games or worse.
#2) FB Position is wide open, L Weaver will retire due to his severe knee injury (which I reported back in January, that his career and at least the 2011 Season was done) FB O Schmitt is a Free-Agent and Rookie Draft Pick Havilli is unproven
#) The Right-side of th OL, Does Rookie 1st Round Pick D Watkins make an impact from Day 1 as the Starter at RG, Does RT W Justice return to form after getting healthy and how does he adjust to working under new OL Coach R Mudd as he was very close for former coach J Castillo.
#3) TE Position is still weak in my opinion DOes Celek revert to 2009 form and does he play like he did last Season which was not very good, IS C Harbor able to compete for playing time and make some plays in games.. Does off-injured C Ingram ever stay healthy to get on the field and contribute
#4) Back-up RB- J Harrison is a free-agent, if he leaves for more playing time, who takes his spot, what happens if McCoy gets injured, who else is there..
#5) WR Depth — D-Jax/Maclin play well together, but what happens if one of them get hurt, who else would creates mis-matches.. Avant is a good 3rd/4th Possession tye of WR, R Cooper needs to Step up and the 5th Spot for S Moss (who hasn’t proven to stay healthy in his career and Chad Hall)
#6) Kicker Akers will be long gone, so rookie Henerey will need a good start to his NFL/Eagle Career but it’s not gimmee that he will duplicate what he has achieved at the College level..

This Eagle Offense while very explosive (when everyone’s healthy) still needs 3-4 solid pieces to improve in their Red-Zone/Short-Yardage situations and overall Pass-Protection and become a more Physical unit that it’s been
lacking in recent season.. Some of it’s playcalling, some of it’s execution and some of it’s have the players/coaches with the nasty attititude to get it done..

scorp, I hear you, but your point about ‘if they “go all out” this year, it proves that the ‘apologists’ were bsing….etc….’….. that’s flawed because this climate (CBA, uncapped year with weird 30% rule etc…..) was unique. Whether you call them weasels, nickels, or smart cap guys, we ALL agree that this FO plans ahead and thinks about $/cap carefully. But your assessment doesn’t account for this at all. It’s not as simple as you make it out to be. Hey, I hope they get one or a few of the players we’re all discussing, but keep in mind that getting Nnamdi and 1 more, or something like that would be very aggressive. Getting 4 or 5 big FAs like Paulman and many others are saying is just ridiculous going overboard. Going out and buying a nice sports car is splurging. Getting 3 nice sports cars and a yacht, that’s ridonk….

BTW, that’s an Italian saying. Feel what i’m saying Paulman? IMO, this is going to happen- Kolb & 3rd rounder gets traded to AZ, for Dockett & 2nd rounder, they sign free agents DE Johnson, LB Posluzny, RCB Grimes (would love Nnamdi, not going to happen), Burress (Contract full of incentives). They talk this aggressive garbage every offseason then sign some pathetic 2nd tier players no one knows…I’ll believe it when I see it.

If they sign Plax, Asmo and Haynesworth……

That’s when the fans canget excited,,,,because it’s been proven that the things that “excites” the front office at the Novacare differs from what excites the fans.

They’ll say anything at this point to create sales once the lockout is over….fans should wait until free agency is over before spending one dime on this team and if they get some plugs no one knows then hold your wallet.

We don’t want to hear that a player like Asmo was too expensive and the organization tried everything they could to get him.

OUR RIGHT CORNER IS ASS!!!!!!!!!

We need him more than any team right now which translate to us paying more than any team.

If a team can pay him..We can pay more!

No more bogus excuse of declining to overpay!

How can they claim they don’t want to overpay when they go into every season with a lot of money under the cap?

This offseason will prove if they want to win it all because every position the Eagles need to solidify the team is on the market.

Will they shop at Macy’s or Goodwill?

Kendrick pitched well in day game and the Bullpen has performed very well
Hamels is legitimate Cy-Young Candidate this Season and is putting together a terrific season.. (Hamels wasn’t a Top 10 pitcher 2009 & 2010 but he has regained his form and is pitching his best & most consistent in 2011 so far which is great to see and is Pitching his way into a huge contract..)

As a WR surely there has been more of a decline with Plax being out of the game then there would have been with Vick? And then the demand for him wont be that high, just like it wasnt that high for Vick. “all-in” to win a Super Bowl, They made a big-Dratf day trade and gave up a lot to move up and Select WR Julius Jones who now paired with WR Roddy WHite probably gives QB Ryan some excellent WR’s, They also added back-up RB /Return extroidinaire Jaquizz Rodgers wo this Falcon Offense is going to have a lot more speed than in past years… Word is they will be going hot and heavy along the DL/Secondary Positions in Free-agency and I would not be surprised to see them sign CB Asmogoah who paired with last year’s Free-agent signing of CB D Robinson would give them a very good CB Tandem, They may decide to re-sign CB Grimes and spend the $$$ on Safety and DE positions, but wither way, the Flacons are going to be an improved team next Season and a lot more explosive
