Flyers sign Jaromir Jagr (Updated)

“My heart is in Pittsburgh.”

“I still have a house there, I was too lazy to sell it!”

While paraphrased, these were the statements that Jaromir Jagr made to the media in the days leading up to free agency. Penguins general manager Ray Shero, coach Dan Bylsma, and owner Mario Lemieux wanted Jagr to retire a Penguin.

It became clear this morning, though, that Jagr was just looking for another paycheck. Shero pulled his offer and used the money to re-sign Tyler Kennedy.

Then Detroit pulled their offer. How did the Flyers react?

By signing the 40-year old Czech to a one-year, $3.3 million deal.

UPDATE

I can’t say I was thrilled with the Jagr signing earlier today, but in the grand scheme of things… well, it’s still an enigma.

The positives from the signing are that Jagr has shown that, even at age 40, he is still an exceptionally talented player on the ice. As Dave Lidbury of GagneDouze.weebly.com pointed out to me earlier, Jagr played with Jakub Voracek during the IIHF World Championship last year. Voracek, who was re-signed today for one years at $2.5 million, could benefit from playing with his fellow Czech.

On a one-year deal, Jagr is basically this year’s Zherdev.

The negative from the signing is that Jagr is basically this year’s Zherdev. He’s obviously just playing for another paycheck, there’s questions that he can play for an entire 82 game season without being gassed, and his attitude could be a major problem.

Everyone understands how coach Peter Laviolette handled Zherdev- he benched him repeatedly for his attitude and lack of commitment (or perceived lack of commitment) to playing defense. How is Jagr going to handle being benched at times? How are Jagr and Chris Pronger going to gel in the locker room? Many saw the trades of Jeff Carter and Mike Richards as a means of creating a culture shift in the locker room, but this just reeks of clashing egos.

I was going to write another post, but people seem to have flocked here already for free agency discussion, so to summarize:

– Flyers signed defenseman Andreas Lilja to a two-year, $735K per year deal. It’s a minor move, but not a very good one regardless. Lilja, 36, has been passed around the league over the last few seasons and is no better or worse than Nick Boynton. The ± stat isn’t that good of an indicator for how an individual performs when on a bad team, but as a reference, he finished last season -15. He replaces Sean O’Donnell, who was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks on a one-year, $850K deal.

– Flyers signed third line center Max Talbot to a five-year, $9 million deal. Talbot is young, strong on the penalty kill and a good character guy, so while I’m not overly excited with the contract, it is reasonable. I would have preferred they signed Eric Belanger, who signed with the Edmonton Oilers on a three-year, $1.75 million contract.

– Flyers traded Kris Versteeg to the Florida Panthers for their 2012 or 2013 second round draft pick and San Jose’s 2012 third round draft pick. I would have liked to see him play with the Flyers when healthy, but it seems the organization has other plans in mind as they are now apparently clearing space for another big trade or signing. Whether it is Brad Richards or not (who the Flyers did speak to today) is unclear.

I don’t like this signing at all, His $3.3 Million Salary at age 40 will prevent the development of at least 2-3 other players on the roster for next year, but maybe he has great year still left in him and time will tell..

If the Flyers end up losing Leino because they signed Jagr, then this signing is a big mistake.. Now you almost have to move a combo of Hartnell/Versteeg and or Timomen if you want to re-sign Leino.. Jagr is a 1 Year reant-a player and does not fit the FLyers mold at old.. He should be able to help on the Power Play but that’s about it .. I thought they were trying to get younger and more physical.. Jagr is neither of these but I do like the signing of Talbot who is a solid 2-way player and good penalty-killer and face-off players… good move there, but Jagr, I am not so sure about ..

Snyder wants to win now & he was majorly ticked that team faded so badly down stretch with poor showing in playoffs. I like Jagr for 1-yr… extremely smart/talented player even with loss of some speed. Can play with/without puck and still has great size/balance & cannot be forced off the puck. Still extremely strong around net and draws penalties; he made Lemieux’s life easier and long rushes up ice are not today’s game. Jagr doesn’t take shifts off and can play off-wing. Yes, he likes $ but Detroit & Pens wanted him cheap. Still have room under cap. This team has gotten a LOT bigger on wing. He & Talbot are familiar with each other. Timmonen isn’t going anywhere this year… last year of contract I believe. Lilja is another big guy as insurance in case Pronger isn’t ready to go. Centers: Briere, Giroux, Talbot & Schenn. That’s very strong down center. Yes, Talbot is 2-way player/PK and understand Schenn is even good for youth. This gives Couturier a year to get stronger for long haul, which was the only knock on him.
WINGERS to stay: Simmonds, JVR, Jagr, Voracek, Hartnell, Nodl, Zherdev, Leino… Holmstren or Testwuide as reserves.
Versteeg was non-factor, Shelley & Carcillo are good as gone, and maybe Betts(c) gone unless Schenn is sent down for a year too, but most think he’s ready for first full year in NHL.
DEFENSE: Pronger, Coburn, Timmonen, Meszaros, Carle, Lilja… Bartulis (reserve).
GOALIES: Bryzgalov, Bobrovsky.

There’s 20 guys who might be roster. Zherdev (finally matured & with another Rusky brother), Jagr, improving JVR & Giroux, and Talbot could easily surpass goals of Richards/Carter goals. Versteeg??

Leino for $4.5mil? Little too high and for how long. Jagr is bargain and we can bring up another young winger or deal for someone else later. Don’t have to play him big minutes… historically raises his level in tight games & playoffs. Huge advantage in shootouts.

Forgot that Jagr was gone before Talbot came in. Glad to see Versteeg for more early draft picks. Holmgren done yet???

Damn, this cap floor is getting some pretty mediocre players paaaaaid. F^@#ING insaaane!! Jagr is 40 years old & hasn’t played in the NHL in 4 years. WTF! TALBOT, LILJA, REALLY!? Homer has lost his mind.
Leino, $4.5 M. for 4 good months in his caeer. 0.o
Verstink, was a waste. Both, good ridance. I hope Homer has another good move in mind. This is way too much turnover, for them to compete for a cup, next year.

Honestly, we need another forward and everyone’s pretty much been signed. I’m totally pissed about Belanger. Would have loved to get him as our 3rd line center and put Talbot on wing. We would have been impossible to score on. Now we’re left with a sizeable 2nd/3rd line winger hole. Is Schenn ready?

Btw, Iggles, Zherdev is long gone.

Heard the Flyers are trying to talk to Rod Brind D’Amour in returning for 1 more season, and also Mark Recchi to add some depth, experience and age to this Roster…
