Mornhinweg: “I think he (Michael Vick) can be better than Steve (Young)”

If you want to get an up close look at what the offense of the Philadelphia Eagles in the upcoming season hinges on, check out the article about Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg which was written by Marcus Hayes on Philly.com.

Mornhinweg talks about seeing Steve Young in Michael Vick, when the Eagles signed him. He believed Vick could regain his greatness.

“Here was a man who hasn’t played for a couple of years. However, if he did it the right way, I thought he could be a Steve Young-type player.”

The Birds offensive coordinator doesn’t believe there’s a limit to how good Vick can be.

“Mike’s got a long way to go, but, you know what? I think he can be better than Steve.”

Remember that Young is in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame and he led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl title. Mornhinweg stressed the fact that Vick needs to improve his play against the blitz.

Last season, Vick was sacked 34 times in only 372 passing attempts. The offensive coordinator will expect Vick to do a better job of getting the football out of his hands and into the hands of his receivers.

“Most sacks were quarterback-related. The quarterback could get the thing out,” Mornhinweg says. Vick often can escape, but that is not always the best course”.

“Here is the situation Mike is in. He’s got uncommon athleticism, so he can get away, on occasion, back-dooring it. There’s that fine line when you need to throw it away or get it out to a hot receiver or use that athleticism to make that great play.”

I’m concerned that all of this time away from Mornhinweg isn’t helping Vick in his progress. Hopefully the offensive coordinator gave his star pupil plays and reads to work with when they had the opportunity.

I asked my boys a question and got mixed answers. Who is better quarterback or who would you rather have in their prime. Michael Vick or Donovan Mcnabb? and why?

vr – obviously it’s an interesting and good question to ask, but don’t we have to wait till Vick starts to get old and break down before we can accurately assess the comparison (obviously my answer is yes). We cannot tell whether or not Vick has hit his prime yet, because if our OL solidifies, we keep 10,18,25,87 etc.. and the O continues to gel/improve (who’s the old guy factor on O?) then Vick’s ‘Prime’ (as viewed appropriately in retrospect) may be way better than anything we’ve seen yet.

Considering Vick is heading INTO his prime as we speak or may be in it right now…….McNabbs prime we could say was 2002 to 2006, maybe 7 — I dunno, it’s a tough call. McNabb always had flaws even in his prime…..and Vick, other than his ability to read the blitz and get the ball out quick (which also has to do with the o-line), doesn’t have as many flaws as McNabb had in his PRIME.

Hmmm, after some thought and consideration, I truly believe with the way Vick plays NOW, in his PRIME, we would have 1 maybe 2 Superbowl titles with the O-Line and Defense that McNabb had……if Vick was the QB. So I’m going to go with Vick.

Vricchini…I would take Vick (not just because we have him), but because he seems a lot more serious about really wanting to win a SB; not that #5 didn’t, but Vick always seemed a lot more hungry. Also, Vick could care less what play was called by Reid and MW, if he saw an opening he’d go for it and it ended up being a dynamic play, whereas #5 was more of a “do boy” and played too much into that mcnabb is “classy” crap. McNabb joked too much for me. I mean I appreciate all the good years he gave us, but his joking around annoyed me (especially in that playoff loss to Dallas where he taunted their fans in front of that glass partition). Mcnabbs inaccuracy and “dirtballs” at the receivers feet killed me everytime I watched it and still irks me til this day. I’ll take Vick. Peace

Mornhinweg, needs to stop smoking the wacky tobaccy. Better than Young!?!? GTFO! Mornhinweg. Try winning something 1st, before comparing the criminal to a Hall of Famer. This was his 1st year ever that he’s was a real QB, & not a glorified RB. Give me a F^@#ING BREAK! Also just imagine what Young could have done if not stuck behind My main man Joe Montana. “Could be better than Young”. Yeah & I could be a millionaire, too. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.
McNabb over Vick by far. Lets not forget the head 2 head loses to Vick.

To Vricchini ,
When was McNabb in his Prime… 2004 Perhaps..
I don’t think Vick has hit his ceiling yet, there is a lot he can still improve on and if he does, he can put some big #’s up over the next 4-5-6 Seasons if he stays Healthy (which means playing smarter) and staying focused..With the tools and playmakers he has at his disposal and playing in a very QB friendly system that the Eagles have, Vick may surpass some of McNabb’s Franchise #’s in about 1/2 the amount of Seasons..

Its a real tough call because Desean Jackson is the best WR I think we ever seen in this club even better than TO when he was here with the addition of Maclin. Mcnabb only had one year with these guys and done some pretty good things with what he had but im going off of instinct on this one and im taking Vick because if you remember all those years when Mcnabb was here when it came to winning a game come crunch time you knew we werent going to to win.

With Vick you knew something special was going to happen. Last years Vick was the best QB season for the eagles that I have ever seen (im sure theres more but im only 27) my pick is Vick.

Call me crazy but is there any chance Mcnabb comes back to Philly again? let alone this season? Kolb I think will be traded so that leaves the door open for a legit #2 QB unless Kafka is the guy. You gotta think signing another QB would be a priority given Vicks game to scramble.

Damn….what happened to Kolb?

you know!

The young gun with that quick release that hit receivers in stride.

The Kevin Kolb Era…

Remember the hype?

Get his ass outta here!!!!

I am not sure Kolb could start for half the teams in the CFL (Canadien Football Leauge)… Plain and Simple, Kolb doesn’t have an “NFL Arm” to make any big plays and without a QB being able to make or to even have the threat of making big plays, then is done and the Defense knows this the DC’s tighten up coverages, shortens the windows and squeezes the entire playing field and this ends up creating turnovers and bad passes by a weak-arm QB trying to force passes and I think this is how Kolb’s Career in the NFL will go… Can he be an effective QB on the right team who relys more on running the ball and utilizing the Play-Action pass (like Minnesota, Dolphins,Cardinals teams are built…) He probably could, but that’s not the makeup of this Eagles Offense so he is not a good fit for how the Passing game has evolved with all the deep threats/big play WR’s they now have now..

The Wig worked with Young in the last three years of his career when Young was 36,37 and 38. Do you really think that Vick will have that long of a career. The Wig is overstating his feelings. Calm down Wig and let’s see what happens
this season before you Cannonize the Vick

Steve Young was able to play to a relatively late age for he was a back-up for 4 Seasons to Joe Montana and saved the wear & tear andpunishment to his body.. Vick also missed a couple of seasons of wear and tear while he was incarcerated..

CB Carlos Rogers for you Stevo
– Familiar with all the opponents/WR & QB’s in the NFC and especailly the NFC East which won’t require a whole lot of study and prep time in a shortened off-season which is a real bonus to be ready to Start Week #1
– Is excellent in the Red-Zone due to his size, strength and physical style of play which has been the Eagles biggest weakness the last 3 seasons with the Eagles secondary
– WIll be very supportive versus the running game (Samuel’s biggest weakness and since Samuel isn’t going anywhere, the other CB has to be physical and enjoy mixing it up)
– Will be a great mentor & locker room player for many of the young CB’s on the Eagles Team and will help with teaching these guys how to become a Professional CB in the NFL
– Will cost a fraction of what a Asmogaoh would cost and allows the Eagles to help upgrade other positions on this Eagle Defense (OLB/DE/DT/S)

The only negative is that Rogers does not have the best pair of hands and has been known for dropping sure INT’s.. This is one area if he improves in, could be an Pro-Bowl type of player, but when I look at the total package of what Carlos Rogers can bring to this Eagle Secondary and team, His positives attributes , high character and overall solid play outweigh any negatives and he would be a great acquistion and really a no-brainer to pursue in Free-Agency

Why is it the Eagles couldn’t find a buyer for Vick??? Maybe because nobody wants him???? And, they still don’t want him…Why is that???? Because he is too small to play the QB position in the NFL…. And the rest of the NFL has the defensive hand book on him….Look at last season, the Bears Packers and lest we forget, the Vikings all ate his lunch when the games meant something…
