Lurie Speaks, Abiamiri Tears ACL, Dixon Sprains Knee And Sapp Leaves Camp Again

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie talked to the media today in what is the yearly “State Of The Eagles” news conference. Before that he spent quite a bit of practice making sure that Asante Samuel knew that the Eagles want him to play here.

Here are a number of comments Lurie made today:

– Eagles say they’re not the Dream Team. He says the Dream Team is the Green Bay Packers, who have the Lombardi Trophy.
– He mentioned the CBA benefitting former players and the new rookie wage scale.
– Lurie says the Eagles have spent to the Max when talking about their financial management
– Lurie refused to talk about.the DeSean Jackson holdout. He said he looks forward to D Jax coming in.
– Lurie: Two of their best moves was signing Mudd and Washburn
– Lurie says they have salary cap room to make more moves
– Lurie is talking about the tough competition in the NFC. Atlanta, New Orleans, Green Bay, and etc

610-WIP’s Howard Eskin reported that Eagles defensive end Victor Abiamiri has an ACL tear and is planning on retiring. It’s unfortunate but we’ll never know what kind of football player he is because he can’t stay healthy.

Abiamiri has got to be totally frustrated about not being able to stay healthy.

According to Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder, defensive tackle Antonio Dixon sprained his knee but it wasn’t very serious. They don’t expect him to miss much practice time.

Nmandi Asomugha and Vince Young are getting antsy for some action. After the Eagles practice this morning the free agents came out onto an adjacent field and got in a workout. They know this isn’t about talking and having press conferences. Ultimately this will all be decided on the football field.

Geoff Mosher of DelawareOnline.com reported that one of last year’s fifth round draft pick’s Ricky Sapp left the training camp on his own and this wasn’t the first time.

The headline is “Lurie speaks, Abiamiri tears ACL”. At first I thought that meant Abiamiri hurt himself listening to Lurie speak, which would have been completely believable.

funny one Horatio…
VA is just one of those players who can never stay healthy enough to play at the NFL Level, I hate to say it, but no real loss and I was suprised he was even on the active Roster.. A little disappointed on the news about Sapp leaving camp, especially hearing how he bulked up and was looking good in the off-season.. He is better suited for a 3-4 Scheme

I’d like to hear more about the specific on Sapp leaving. Was he hurt? Did he get his feelings hurt? Was he bored?

Leaving camp 2 years in a row on your own = end of NFL career. Guess he can’t hack it.

Whoever picked the likes of Abiamiri and Sapp, Mcdougal, Patterson, Bunkley, Teo ,….needs to be outta here….and I don’t even want to talk about the picks we wasted in the first 3 rounds on Safeties and Linbackers.

Geesh..Have any other team been this bad in picking linemen in the 1st round?

Philly.com reported that he(sapp) is no longer part of the team.

I think the new coaches are doing a good job of weeding out the bums and pretenders.

As for Victor A. He can turn in his mask now, because he’s been stealing from the team his entire career. These are the players that everybody forgets about when they say give Desean more Money. Does Victor give back his money for underperforming? It’s a 2 way street when you run a business. Each takes a risk, but both should honor the contract otherwise why sign it?

If Desean really is as good as he and his agent think, then the sky will be the limit after this season.

Lurie refused to talk about it. Something just stinks about the whole situation.

@john Hart If a team is giving up on a 2nd rounder that quick, something is obviously wrong….dont want any part of him.

The sad part is that “NO PUSH Patterson” and “ALL BUNK” Bunkley actually started all this time. If they were none drafted free agents it would have been ok. But 2 number one picks playing like that was PATHETIC.

I think the DT we just picked up from Green Bay has more sacks then all 5 of the losers in SONGS Post,

R Sapp was a 5th Roudner out of CLemson
V Abriami was a 2nd ROund pick from Norte Dame 4 Years in a very weak Draft for DL trhat year… His description from NFL Pro Scouts at the time of the Draft has him to a T..
“Lacks explosion and a quik first step, questionable work ethic, is a big body but is inconsistent in his play and desire”

Lets not make a big deal about Lurie not talking about DJAX contract…He also didn’t answer the question about getting Vick’s contact being done before the deadline in September….
He spoke very highly of DJAX and Vick both…also said Vick would be an Eagle for many years to come…
He just refused to answer contract questions regarding them both!
How many owners, GM’s talk about contracts publicly when a player is holding out…?

BSM….exactlty…It seems we need to pay fextra for free agents to make up for the 1st round busts.

If it was Heckert then good riddings to bad rubbish.

If any scout had a hand in those picks and are still employed with theEagles, they must have negatives of Reid in a compromising position.

Don’t forget we let Babin go only to trade up and grab Graham who I feel will also be a serious bust.

It cost us an extra pick to move up and we missed on Earl Thomas who could have added needed power and speed to our Safety position..only to Get Babin back for alot more money.

I’m glad things panned out but I hope this 1st round thing get fixed.

Today Watkins was struggling badly but I hope it’s due to him getting in late…Now, if this guy end up being a bust I can only think that it’s Reid falling in love with the tape on certain guys and become fixated only to skip over the best talented player on the board at the time.

We must get better drafting 1st round picks.

As far as all of these average DL taken over the years, some of the blame has to go to former DC Jimmy Johnson who reccomented and signed off on a lot of these players per T Heckert..

Taylor Mays can’t play dead. Not needed here, big hitters that can’t catch anybody are useless.

There’s a reason they want to get rid of Mays. Having said that, who knows if it’s him or the coaching. I mean it’s only his second year. Sure, he’s not Earl Thomas or Eric Berry but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a good player in the future with the right coaching. Some players naturally have it and some need coaching. With that, I’m not sure the Eagles have good enough coaching in the secondary to develop a player like him. Don’t think I want to take a chance on him. I want some solid safeties back there that can tackle and won’t let anyone get behind them and can cover a TE when necessary.

How about moving Mays to LB and let him learn for a season or two? We need some LB’s anyway and many scouts said he might have to switch to LB to be successful anyway.

Recent signee Safety Jarred Page will help speed up the development of Jarrett/Coleman & N Allen. The Eagles are fine at the Safety Position for years
They could use at Veteran at LB

Eagle Eyes, can’t just change a guy’s position. It’s a different mentality. Now if that is something that he would like to work hard on, then it could work. But for the most part, guys don’t want to change position unless it’s the only thing they can do to keep a job. But for the Eagles, I’m tired of all the “project” players. You know, making a dlineman a FB or making DE a LB and vice versa. Forget that. Get a guy for a position that plays that position or a guy who’s naturally versatile but you can’t just stick a safety in as a linebacker because he hits hard. Or else he’ll be out there like Ernie Sims.

paulman, we cannot say we are fine at the safety position for years. Now, I would like to say that but we have no clue on how these players will turn out. All we can do is hope for the best but proclaim it to be true so early is a bit foolish especially when considering the last few years of safety personnel.

Something is obviously wrong if a guy was taken in the 2nd round and a year later that team is looking to get rid of him. It was already known that he didn’t have the hip movement to excel at safety. He wouldn’t need to be counted on this year. I do agree that he would have to be willing to make this move and put in some work. Remember Namdi played safety all his years in college and changed positions to become one of the best in the league when he entered into the NFL. He should be used to covering TE’s and could still do that…now just a little closer to the line of scrimmage.

Songs, I agree with you about picking up the FAs because of the draft failures. Like I said a couple days ago this was the FO conceding that they cannot rely mainly on their drafting for the team to be successful. I mean just look at it last year, people FO apologist damn near put Graham into the pro bowl as being the next Dwight Freeney solely because we drafted him. Then we had Nate Allen (who I think is going to be a solid player for a while) and then look at the prior years defensive draft picks that came in to be starters at key positions. The Eagles neglected the free agents because they relied on the draft and I always wanted a good mix of proven talent and rookies. But for the last few years, we relied too much on incoming rookies to be an important part of the team in key positions. They under perform but before that the FO sells them to us and then we slam them when in actuality they were never going to be as good as they were billed. People liked to point out things like “what team went crazy in free agency and won the Super Bowl”. But then neglected to think about what teams have a bunch of rookies at key positions and won the Super Bowl. For years we needed both and we FINALLY got the FA pickups on defense.

Ill Take Taylor Mays. Send him this way for the 5th round pick we got for Bunkley. He may have had a bad year in San Fran last year but so did everyone else not named Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis. Hes got a ton of Speed and could be a bad ass on special teams if he lets go of the EGO.

Mays at LB would be no bigger than Clayton and Rolle and many think they are too small and not strong enough at the point of th attack to play in NFL to begin with and these are lpayers that have been playing LB for a while so where does that leave Mays Chances.. .. (and slim just ran out the door leaving none)
