Eagles Defense is Dominating, But The Offense Needs To Pick It Up

I like the way the defense played in the first half, they were on the attack. The line was getting off the ball and the coverage was tight on the receivers. They were able to totally overmatch Colt McCoy and the Browns. I would like to see the pass rush be more consistent, but once they got going they dominated.

On the Asante Samuel interception, Jason Babin did a great job on taking out the guard and the tackle on the pass rush game. Culllen Jenkins came around and was in McCoy’s face.

Jamar Chaney is a playmaker. He’s got a great burst of speed when he needs it. You can clearly see that he’s the best linebacker on the football team.

The defense looks fast. Kurt Coleman is doing a good job of coming up quickly to support the run defense. I like Coleman’s instincts and fundamentals. He reads plays very quickly and comes up with an attitude.

It was nice to see Mike Patterson get a sack early in the game. He did a great job of beating his man and forcing the offensive guard to hold him.

Casey Matthews has done a good job tonight. He’s made a few very good plays versus the run. They’re getting him off the field on second and long’s. It’s good to see him have some success which is going to do nothing but help his confidence.

I was extremely disappointed in the play of the Eagles offensive line. At the start of the game, Jason Kelce and Danny Watkins proved to everybody that they’re rookies. Watkins was opening the door up to let Michael Vick get hit. It’s a wonder that Vick was able to survive the pounding he was taking without getting hurt.

The offensive line played like they were third stringers in there in the first half. it was ridiculous for them to let Vick take a battering like that. Are the Eagles going to have to keep Celek in all year to help the offensive line pass block?

Did the Browns have somebody covering Shady tonight? The only guy that Vick could get the ball to was running back LeSean McCoy who seemed to be open on every play in the first half.

I’m surprised that Vick wasn’t able to take a good shot downfield in the first half because he was running for his life the entire first half. The Browns pass rush has taken that away from the

DeSean Jackson is playing like he decided he’s not going to catch a pass and take a lick until he signs his new contract.

That Peyton Hillis is a grown man. He’s a beast. In a regular season game, they would have been giving the ball to Hillis every other play. When they gave him the ball he was able to run effectively.

Phillip Hunt got his sack and he’s had some good pass rushes tonight. I think he’s a very good pass rusher

I said it once before…Get Matthews out of the middle!

Looked at him in the 2nd half and it’s clear..he’s not a middle linebacker..offensive coordinators target and run right at him.

The birds oline looked horrid the 1st quarter into the 2nd then they sured things up. Its all a learning process for these rookies. But we dont need Vick taking hits like that… Philip Hunt makes this team and so does Landri. Parker and Laws are the odd men out…. i also see hargroves making the team… We gotta have guys that make plays on that line, guys that can get to the QB and can be phyysically imposing. I like how lesean looked out there, how Brown looked and dion lewis, man we have some good RBs. Vick didnt look very shaarp but i think we can see why, the olines poor play but also we need maclin… But i was also thinking how we need to stay consistent in the run game being that we have rookies on that oline and who at this stage are better at run blocking then they are at pass protection…

But all in all it was a much better showing than they gave last week… I just dont like how that oline looked tonight and all the hits Vick took, this was the thing i was concerned with…

Agreed Songs I thought Matthews and Foku were awful again. He was better than last week but thats not saying alot. IMO. Chaney played well. Hillis would of ran for 150 yards if they would of kept running. This isnt high school. I need a player ready to go. As far as the oline of course they sured it up later in the game they kept 6 and 7 in to block. Jackson dissapeared. Cooper isnt a starting WR in the NFL. Shady maybe the best player on offense and maybe on the team. He is a stud. Watkins just doesnt look very good. Very strange pick again.

look for the tight end to be taken out of the plan this year too.
It’s preseason and Celek had to stay in to block because our Right Tackle is ass.

I don’t know why we go into another off season with the draft and free agency and not address Vick’s blindside.

and don’t give me the guy we signed with back spasms….If he was ready Denver would have never ler Harris go. Can someone say Andrews?

We need a healthy stud on the blindside in order for this offense to be prolific. The west coast offense need the tight end as a threat to rum smoothly and that can’t happen if he’s out of the gameplan as an extra offensive lineman.

Many of Vick’s hits are his own fault. He doesn’t make quick decisions. He’s looked pretty average.. continuing how he looked to end the last season.

Treat them like men and stop using age from excuses.

Earl Thomas came in last year and hit like a man.

We don’t need safeties and linebackers who are happy with being average.

Get a nasty ass linebacker…age no matter. Stop coddling these men.

Matthews will be a liability. The best tackle this year have come from the quarterback.

LMAO @ Vicks sacks being his own fault…………I didn’t see ONE sack that Vick took tonight in which the reasoning was because he held the ball too long, not ONE. As soon as he got the ball, before he could even step into the pocket someoone was in his face.

I don’t think Vick likes to get hit, if he could get the ball out of his hand to an OPEN receiver, I’m sure he would.

Same thing happened to McNabb, except with #5, he was already on the downhill slope of his career.

No man would be able to survive behind that line with teams blitzing continously. NO man.

Paulman and I been saying this about D-Jax since last season. Dude cant run anything but the go route. Whats the point in having a receiver like that when the o-line isnt giving Vick enough time to let the route develop? Alligator arms doesnt deserve even 75% of Fitzgerald money.

I was at the game tonight.. A few things

*cant have a whole right side of rookies and King Dunlap… period… they need to snap out of that fantasy. guys was coming free on VIck at first when the Eagles were trying to run those deep passing routes.. after Vick got pounded twice, he looked shook, skittish… Vick started hitting the dump off and they started running short little crossing routes and the offense started to work a little..Im no Jamal Jackson fan, but they gotta stop playing around and get him back in there and get the RT situation straightened out now…

*Defense looked pretty good…. Asante had his usual ‘big play making ability’ on display.. he jumped a pass… I was shocked when I looked up and saw Nnamdi beat down the sideline but it was a push off… he looked impressive.. Looked Cromartie almost had a pick himself… The Linebackers looked more like real pros out there. Chaney is a beast and we need that guy in the middle.. I felt better about Matthews after seeing him tonight, but I dont want Castillo thinking we all wanna suffer thru Casey’s growing pains… They put the kid in a tough spot and I dont want him costing us games… That said I think he may eventually be a pretty good player…

We blocked another kick… I dont ever remember the Eagles being a team that blocks kicks regularly

4. chaney is good
5. asante does it again. last year asante gave up under 200 yards, nnamdi gave up just over 200 and revis gave up a 400 i think.. asante could have 10 picks this year.

I agree with you that Vick seemed to be taking too long to go through his progression on some plays. Obvioulsly, o-line was ass in the first quarter, but even on the plays in the sevond quarter where he had time, it felt like it took him forever to finally check it down.

One thing nobody is saying- When Vick was in Atlanta he had a crappy o-line too. While he was the most sacked, he never took these kind of beatings. Why? The same reason he scored, because he scrambled. While it’s great he’s worked on refining his passing game. We need more cowbell. More scrambles. Truly keep the defense guessing. He used to scramble anytime he saw daylight. We always thought if only he could use that rocket arm accuratee, and those wheels lije he does- he’d be dangerous. Not “if only he could use that rocket arm accurately, and NOT USE THOSE WHEELS AT ALL- Rather hang out where the defense knows where to find you. If we can truly get some vintage scrambles- paired with precise darts hes throwing defenses would truly be confused, not so confident what’s about to happen. This dude doesn’t fit the mold so lets not handcuff him. Vick, sometimes I feel like I just wat he’d him go through his progression twice, like he wants to prove something everydown “I can read a D, I can thread the needle” by the time he reads twice he’s lost his window of escape. Even though if you go back and watch that 3rd pick he threw in that Steelers game- that was vintage Vick how he like backpedaled forward? Anyway nice move to free himself up, bad throw. But old Vick wouldn’t have forced that, pulled it down and ran. What u guys think

I agree we need some more cowbell…

Some more balance.. Dont let defense forget that he might just break a couple and turn this into the 4th qtr of the Giants game..

we need that balance all over on offense.. Jackson will always stretch the field when he is out there… We need Maclin to give us those intermediate routes and also go deep.. And we need Vick to use Shady and Celek short and intermediate range..

the line has to play better and Andy and Marty have stop playing checkers and play chess

One reason why reid and co. Don’t want vick running every play is defenses will have their opportunity to knock out vick. And we all know that vick doesn’t like running out of bounds. I didn’t see the game, but the oline pisses me off. One of our priorities this offseason should have been oline. We now have 2 starting rookies and a seventh rounder starting. Also the one lineman we signed in free agency is injured. We wont win a superbowl with an oline like that unless they get drastically better.

Right tackle can be a hall of famer and wont matter. When you come out in shotgun 90% of the time and run long routes your QB will get killed. The offense has and been predictable. Reid doesn’t get it. Teams will just pin their ears back. When your QB keeps getting smashed, just keep passing morion. Differnet players, but the same old pass happy coach.

Ozz brings up good pt.

The shotgun. Standing 4-5 yrds Snap…3 steps back and……right to where DEs converging. All the time. Then, a roll out! DEs get up the field against every team…OTs taught to steer DEs out around the ‘pocket”. This seems difficult when Vick is always standing right where they’re steering them to. Its called a pocket because the QB is supposed to be surrounded….step up into it!

On the TD he ran in it went exactly like that. And….there were 3 interior linemen in a perfect line setting a great pocket…but it was run outside time for Vick. When in shotgun he never seems to step-up…only out.

He does step up, and there is much And they changed to a lot more under centre in 2nd Q and pressure subsided. But he’s not an effictive passer there.

Balby’s point interesting in Red Zone…when in close O=line have to create passing lanes ’cause Vick can’t see the endzone.

DD, with all due respect brother, I’ve noticed a pattern. It starts like this – the eagles do something or play a game. It ends like this – you freak out!

Yeah, Desean is playing not to get hurt….hm….what’s the #1 goal in preseason for anybody? DON’T GET HURT. So what we have is a great player doing exactly what the #1 goal for him is. And you see it as a problem – why? Don’t lose track of the context/goals.

And don’t freak out. It’s preseason of a wierd/compressed offseason. Freaking out is unacceptable.

Remember, we get all over arty and Vick for going for the home run too much?
Yesterday, we ran real west coast offense, and the Cleveland back 7 on the defense was giving us space and daring us to run/take what was there.
That’s great, working on something new to us, this is what the Patriots, Colts, and Saints do.
We didn’t get the WRs involved much, but they are usually involved in the gameplan come regular season.
Sometimes boring is necessary, and fundamentals are key (drafting a OL in the 1st rd. and throwing short/checkdowns in preseason).

Our o-line seems ahead in our rush offense than in passing, giving our RBs some decent space last night.
We already know what we have with Vick and the WRs (when healthy), and if teams are going to give us space we have to be patient and take what’s there until they make the mistake of sucking up.
If I’m defending this defense and you’re not a fan of getting beat by the blitz (like McDermott in Carolina continues to show he’s not) then you have you 4 DL rush and drop the LBs back to aid the secondary and hope for a forced pass into coverage (like Vick’s 3 picks vs. Steelers)

Beyond this, any worries or concerns about not playing like last yr. is premature and pigeonhole sighted.
It’s all about the big picture and the ultimate goal, and as fans you either need to develop that understanding or you will be a “prisoner of the moment” and contradict yourself a few weeks later.

I was at the Linc last night, and whenever Vick scrambled he actually did look to get out of bound or on the ground! I’m not worried about Vick getting hit when he’s running…The concern is him getting smacked up in the pocket! That entire right side, has me worried! I’m not making too much out of this, ITS ONLY PRESEASON! Teams do things differently, try things, new things…you’re not going to see a team show their hand in the preaseason…But fact is regardless what time of season it is, protect your franchise QB!

the negativity is born of frustration, years of frustration, and notwitthstanding the new additions, some of us have this sinking feeling itt will end the way it always does, or maybe worse this time, and navy , your attack on the acumen of the fans is not only unwarranted but inaccurate, people like bsm, ddcar, songs, paulman and vinnie publish some insightful comments about this team and where it should be going, just because they can and sometimes should be critical does not mean they don’t care; to the contrary maybe they care too much, always the hallmark sign of a true philadelphia fan, not a fan of the coach or front office like you and your cohorts seem to be

we didnt play extraordinarily but good teams win in dif. ways including ugly
starting eagles went 17-0 against a team imo should have done whether preseason or week 8 or whatever

get over yourselves and your empty statements
sure, the OL has some work to do, we are not a finished/polished product
but we do have an advantage over teams that didnt make the playoffs because of the lockout
sure it affects us like everybody else, but playoff teams are less affected and have kinks to work out

you do know (although i dont give a shit about preseason like you drama queens are) gb allowed them to move that chains at will (although only a qtr of football) we didnt.

moving on, i like that we’re working on different things than we have in the past
actual west coast offense and running game, o-line changes with mudd
and finding an identity on defense with castillo and the unit as a whole
our LBs only have to do so much, sandwiched between that revamped d-line and secondary
also, knowing we scored 27 ppg helps the d out, esp. playing with a lead getting sacks and picks

offensively we havent had our greatest moments but its preseason
but, we get to have vick work on different things and were finally taking whats there
were not going for home runs every play and thats what makes the patriots and colts successful
being patient, taking whats there, and then taking their shots
we have a firm running game and a great QB
we have a great coaching staff that is seasoned, and although were not in midseason form our starters did the job with a 17-0 game

I can understand people being frustrated with negativity… this is Philadelphia after all and there is a good bit of negativity among the fan base…

but like I said, its a public board so you sorta have to take the good with the bad like anything else in life…

I just hope guys can pull back on all the insults and sarcastic BS… that would make it alot easier for people to find a common ground on issues that they disagree

back to football

like I said last night…. The defense looked much better and offense still has work to do… they need to get JJ back at center and figure out the RT problem… they also need to make a habit of taking what the defense gives them.. the offense got into a rhythm once the began doing that last night and they should learn from that
