Eagles Rookie “O” Linemen, Kelce & Watkins Must Get Better Immediately

The Eagles offense started the game like a comedy act. On one play the rookie right guard, Danny Watkins, would step to the side and let the defensive tackle pound Michael Vick. On another play, rookie center jason Kelce, would refuse to snap the ball despite the fact that the entire line and quarterback were moving.

Numerous times the snapped the ball a split second late. It wasn’t a smooth outing for the Eagles offensive line, especially the first couple of drives.

Vick was getting pounded by nearly everybody on the Cleveland defensive front. On one play it was the defensive linemen on the next play it was the linebackers, who the offensive line decided to let come through. They were turning defenders loose despite the fact that the Browns weren’t blitzing very much.

On the very first offensive play, Watkins stepped to the side and let Browns rookie defensive tackle Phillip Taylor come through and pound Vick. I don’t know what he was thinking, but he can’t make that type of mistake.

Cleveland’s defense was lining up in a four-man front for the most part and rushing the passer at the snap of the ball. The first team offensive line was playing like some third stringers, who got in the game at the end of the fourth quarter, but had no idea what they were doing.

“It was a combination of things,” Reid said. “It was a combination of the set-up for the quarterback and a combination of the blocking scheme up front. That’s about as detailed as I can get for you.”

Whatever it was it can’t happen again. The Eagles can’t afford to put Vick in that type of physical jeopardy because it could sideline him and force them to use Vince Young or Mike Kafka as their starter.

After the game, Reid wasn’t willing to make any decisions about who was going to start at the center position, Kelce or veteran, Jamaal Jackson who played with Young in the second half. I know Reid has a great deal of respect for Howard Mudd, but there’s no way they can start Kelce in the first two games on the road, where the noise is going to be through the roof when the Eagles offense has the ball. They’ve got to go with Jackson and then after a few games maybe go back to Kelce.

You could tell by their body language in the early part of the game that both of the youngsters knew they were having problems in their pass blocking. Kelce did a great job of the Ronnie Brown touchdown run. He blocked one of the Browns defensive lineman all the way into the end zone, so his block was more than ten yards.

There were other plays when Kelce’s athleticism was extraordinary. He can get out of front of draws and screens with his tremendous speed. I see a bigger upside in 6th rounder Kelce than I see in the first rounder Watkins. I didn’t see too many times when the first rounder did something which I found to be impressive.

“Mike got hit too much, you never like seeing number seven being hit like that,” Kelce said. “It’s our job to keep him clean. … It’s like the bottom of your stomach just falls out” when Vick gets hit.

Vick came to their rescue during the game by tucking the football under his arm and taking off on a touchdown run . He tried to come to Kelce’s rescue after the game as well by giving alibis.

“You can’t expect a guy to come in and be a Pro Bowl player in two games,” Vick said. “That’s just not the way this thing works.”

He stayed positive about the entire offensive line, which couldn’t have been easy to do when you think about how many times he was getting hit.

“The offensive line did well”, Vick said with a straight face. “I’m proud of those guys, we can always improve starting with me. There are some things that I can improve on and it just goes back to us working hard each and every day.”

If the Birds plan on starting Kelce and Watkins side-by-side, they’re going to have to grow up immediately. Left guard Todd Herremans must have been talking about himself, left tackle Jason Peters and right tackle King Dunlap. “We’re making progress,” guard Todd Herremans said. “Obviously, better than last week. We came out a little more ready to play than last week.”

Dunlap played well again this week and seems to be getting more comfortable. The former free agent offensive tackle is battling three veterans, Winston Justice, Ryan Harris and Reggie Wells, for the starting right tackle position.

Reid said he played well against the Steelers and he didn’t give up any sacks or commit any penalties on Thursday night. Dunlap is currently the favorite to start the first game, since there are only a couple of weeks until the season starts on September 11. Justice and Harris are battling injuries, while Wells has been on the roster for only a couple of weeks.

The Matador play continues! That 1st quarter looked like the run of the bulls in Spain! Pathetic! Kelce, Watkins & Duncrap can’t pass block! PERIOD! Kelce looked okay run blocking, but Watkins & Duncrap where carrying red capes all game! Doesn’t even look like we did anything for that side of the line. Same garbage, different names. Maybe they ought to give Watkins a hose, then he’ll be able to stop someone! Gonna be a long year!

If things don’t change, Vick will be concussed & broken up by week #2!
I hope these rumors of Totupu & Stinchomb coming are true!

No one should be subject to a beating like Vick took in a preason game against a 5-11 team. The offensive line on the left looked bad. The Jets are coming up and if they play any QB he will be blown up. That challenge by Reid shows how stupid he can be at times. The previous scores in preseason were all reviewed
throughout the league. WHAT FILES DOES HE WATCH. THE FOOD CHANNEL?

You can have a HOF tackle it doesn’t matter. We come out in shotgun every play and run long routes. Reid is predictable and pass happy. All new players, but same ol results. The only constant is marrty and andy. It might be a long season fellas. BTW if the brown kept running Hillis the browns would of beat us up because we are small and soft. Just like usual. Andy is the problem.

Cripes, everyone needs to relax. Ozz, that is part of it, but the other part was the fact that dudes were coming unblocked or through the middle of the line to get to Vick.

Thought it was funny that they seemed to runblock better than passblock. When was that ever the case for the Eagles O-line.

Ddcar, running of the bulls, lmao, Vick would rather run with the bulls than play behind this porous line, you are on fire with your comments

More playground Football from the Eagles,
Take away VIck’s & Youngs Scrambles and this Team can’t move the ball..
Browns opening Drive and come up empty with missed FG and then Turnover deep in their own Zone giving the Eagles a Cheap TD..Not as good of a performance as the Score indicates but at least they did score 3 TD’s

“On the very first offensive play, Watkins stepped to the side and let Browns rookie defensive tackle Phillip Taylor come through and pound Vick.”

It wasn’t the first play, it was the third. And I’n not sure if it was the O-line’s fault. It think it was supposed to be a run play.

Let’s look again….3rd play of game…3rd and 3. (vid is on NFL.com)

At the snap Dunlop, Watkins and Shady all pull left leaving a huge hole.

Vick then holds out ball but then pulls it back and play-actions to Shady. and promptly gets hit 2 seconds later and coughs up the ball. (It was Kelce who actually got bowled over by Taylor…)

What if that was supposed to be a run play (sure looked like it did)? And it looked like a run play that would have been very successful…..perhaps this is not all the o-line’s fault….

If it was suppoded to be play-action, then I think that’s a weird call pulling 2 guys to the left and hoping a rookie centre can then move over and take the spot vacated by 2 o-line.

Thank goodness some Eagle fans are on this morning that actually know some football.

Those spineless jellyfish that just make excuses for Crystal ball Andy are pathetic.

“Oh I’m a real fan because I never say anything bad about my team..”

Grow up.

Sorry Offensive line coach for your Defensive Coordinator.

Yeah…Andy’s “All-In”. He’s “All-in” fantasy land.

Mr Cobb, please use your Press Credentials to get that message to Andy Reid. Put it in a envelope marked “Free Hoagies For Life”.

He’ll be sure to read it.

BSM, do you literally eat pieces of shit for breakfast? That would explain why you act like you not only have a stick up your ass but more like you have a years supply of used razor blades up your ass.

What I am impressed at though, is that with all that UP there, you’re still somehow able to talk OUT of your ass.

Mr. Cobb, when the Eagles drafted this “Old Man” you correctly pointed out that in college he was a grown man playing against youngsters and therefore should look impressive.

I have notice an absence of stories on him. However, if MLB Matthews is worthy of indepth reports so is this 1st rounder. Philly.com has’nt said too much about him either. Has the Eagles front office put him off limits?

The oldest 1st rounder in the history of the NFL.
Offensive line Coach as Defensive Coordinator.
No Right Tackle?
“Boney James” as your #1 WR.

Is this “The Emperor’s new clothes”?

Are we going to wait until the season emplodes to tell check Crystal Ball Andy for Meth? This guy is on something. The Steelers game was not an abirition that we should ignore.

Ah Schiller…

One of the pathetic morons I was talking about.

I was’nt going to mention you by name, but since you decided to raise your hand…

12 season and no championships

And you blindly support him. That is why you fail.

The facts are the facts. You could give Andy Reid the NFC Pro Bowl Team and Belichek would beat him, because he is so predictable.

Throw a rock into a pack of dogs and the one that makes the most noise is the one that got hit.

bsm – how is the Eagles’ trophy case empty? Did someone remove the 1960 Championship trophy? That’s f-d up if its true.

And I don’t blindly support Reid. I really don’t. I think he should’ve gotten rid of Pat Shurmer and segrest a long time ago. And I think he coddled Donovan WAY too much.

YOU BLINDLY HATE HIM.

Yeah, no superbowls, I got that – trust me. But same was true for Cowher and is for every coach before they win one.

But seriously, you know that the only difference between an NFL Championship and Super Bowl is words and media packaging right? You DO know that right?

@ schiller — no, he doesn’t know that.

You know whats funny, if the NFL decided to change the name of the Superbowl next year to the “Pantheon Cup” — how many would ANY team in the NFL have? Oh thats right, 0! Because it’s a name change!

Ok Schiller try it like this, when you follow a franchise for decades, no championships, and every year there is a void, yet more talk by the management how great they are, and when across the street there is a franchise that doesn’t talk but wins, thank goodness, and is about to win again, and when there was a weakness for lack of a right bat they acquired the best available, meanwhile the voids here are filled with late draft picks, aged first rounder, an offensive line coach turned defensive coordinator, now cheerleader, and quarterback who we don’t need running but was running for his life, you can understand why this organization is on a short leash with the true fans of Philadelphia sports

August 26, 2011 2:29 pm

Jake – we’re all aware of that. We are. But for the ‘the phillies don’t talk’ thing – that’s BS. The phillies are a BASEBALL team. Baseball team’s don’t have built in media requirements in contract where it is mandatory that coaches/gm’s etc… do regularly scheduled media appearances. Maybe there are some requirements for MLB, but it’s nowhere near that of the NFL and even if it wouldn’t be under the microscope the way it is in the 16 game season of the NFL. You can’t honestly say that the Phillies just ‘choose’ to talk less and that the Eagles could also choose to but just don’t. That’s bullshit.

Dude, I get the frustration – but it’s no excuse to be unreasonable with this year’s team. That’s sports – look at the Red Sox “babe ruth curse”. How have cowboys been since Elway left? Would you like to be a Detroit fan?

STOP WHINING AND ENJOY FOOTBALL

A better effort in last nights game, but lots of work still need to be done as there is with all 32 Teams in the NFL… At least the Eagles should know what their weak spots are and where they need to improve o. Lots of teams with new Players, Coaches, Schemes, the best thing so far this camp/preseason has been the relatively minor injuries so far and if/when the EAgles get MAclin,Steve SMith, WJ back on Offense, it should be a real big help.. Same with A Dixon playing DT, I am not so sure T Laws makes this team with the play and energy thatDT’s Hargrove and Landri have brought since being signed and the LB play will only improve as they get more experience..

Probably the reason why he wasn’t pursued by many Teams at all during Free-agency and especially since the Broncos (who need OT help) and know him and his condition best, and really made no attempt to re-sign him.. I was wary of him from the get-go just for this reason alone..
