Current Eagles Offensive Line: Too Many Question Marks?

This is the most talented roster Andy Reid has ever had but they still have deficiencies or question marks at a number of positions and too many of them may be on the offensive line. Offensively, the strength of this squad is their passing game and of course with Reid at the helm they are going to rely on that passing game.

The offensive line which will take the field for the Birds in the St. Louis Rams game will be playing together for the first time on that day. Normally offensive lines get better the longer they play together. This group will have to learn on the run.

This offensive line has an incredible challenge ahead for it, since It only takes one of the five offensive linemen to fail to do their job in order for the quarterback to get sacked. They have to step up and play well immediately.

This unit has only one of last year’s starters, Jason Peters, still at the same position, left tackle, that he was at during the 2010 season. Peters is one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL and he’s playing like they expecting him to when he was acquired by the Birds in a trade. He’s powerful as a run blocker and as quick as a cat as a pass blocker.

Peters is the one sure thing they have amongst the five offensive linemen on the offensive line.

Todd Herremans was playing left guard until last week. He and Peters gave the Birds one of the best guard-tackle combos in the league. The duo was broken up when Herremans was moved to right tackle. He’ll have to get used to all of the tremendous pass rushers who play left defensive end and left linebacker in the NFL.

Rookie Danny Watkins will start at right guard even though he’s struggled during the preseason. Pass blocking isn’t Watkins’ strong suit, but he must be able to pass block defensive tackles one-on-one without help. Reid and Marty Mornhinweg will look for ways to help him, but they can’t forget Herremans, who will have the toughest job getting used to right tackle.

Yesterday the Birds signed veteran guard Kyle DeVan off of waivers. He has started 21 games for the Colts and started at right guard under new Eagles offensive line coach, Howard Mudd, when he was in the position a couple of years when Indy went to the Super Bowl. This signing was clearly insurance for Watkins, who was the only starting offensive lineman to play against the Jets and his performance was inconsistent.

Rookie Jason Kelce will be the starting center and he’s got a tremendous upside with ability to out-quick defensive tackles. His pass blocking technique is getting there, but he needs to become more consistent. His toughest job will be working with quarterback, Michael Vick on the blitz pickups.

The Birds have Jamaal Jackson on the roster to backup Kelce, but they’re going to do everything they can to help the young man succeed and I believe he will.

To Kelce’s left is veteran guard, Evan Mathis, who is going into his eighth NFL season, but has only started 22 games in his career with Carolina, Cincinnati and Miami during that time. He hasn’t played with the first team yet this preseason, but he’s played okay when he gotten his chances with the second team.

Nobody knows how he will play over the long haul. I tend to think that there’s a reason he was able to average only three starts per year in first seven years in the league. Devan could wind up playing left guard in the future if Watkins comes on strong and Mathis struggles. Mathis is by no way a sure thing.

Remember that the game planners can’t help all of the blockers by keeping the backs and tight ends in to block. Somebody other than Peters will have to be one-on-one. It could take the Birds half of the season to see who belongs where on the offensive line, but they want to keep Vick healthy and be winning games while they’re finding out.

Again, the problem with this offensive line at this time before the season begins is that there may be too many question marks.

DUH.

We’ll just have to see if they can eek out a win (or better) v. St. Louis and go from there. Same for the next game. There’s no denying that there are question marks. But the line needed changes from last year (anyone disagree?) and they made them. The labor situation f-d up the timing for every team, regardless how many changes were being made, and that’s that.

If we have to beat that Rams by intercepting Bradford a few times for a TD, maybe a fumbe recover TD, a designed rollout bomb to Djax and nothing but screen passes – so be it! If it takes gadget plays, SO BE IT. A Dion Lewis runback for TD (ok, not likely).

But whatever. It is what it is, buck up and do the job. Develop by weeks 4,5,6, into a solid OL, and then we’re balling.

We can either meet the challenge head on, or whine and bitch like Songs and the media. Your/our choice.

This o line has the potential to be very good, excellent, especially if reid balances the attack with more running early on in the game, tire out the defenses because these young guys can explode off the ball, if reid resorts to his passaholic tendencies call 911 for Vick, more playground football

Schill…you’re right.

Our offensive line is good to go.

Eagles are a 3 point favorite…

I’m going on record right now …paste it.

Rams will pull out the same scheme used to slow us up compliments of the Giants who showed others how to play against our defense.

Notice, when teams got the blueprint..we lost down the stretch.

The key?

send an extra passrusher every play so the tight end and/or running back is taken out of the the passing game.

and line the safties a little off to take away the big play while the middle linebacker spy Vick.

Field position opportunities are limited with the kickoffs moved up…so teams will take away the big play to force Vick to methodically go up the field 80 yards.

This plays into their hands…So?

So, the rams can play their power running game with play action against our aggreessive front four and will exploit Matthews and our safties in the middle.

Look for a game of keep away by the Rams in hops of pulling it out in the end.

Rams will win game one 24-20

This will be the wake up call needed to move Chaney in the middle and promote Rolle for the linebackers and place Jamaal Jackson in the middle and move Kelce in Watkins spot.

Our opening game last year made Reid adjust his thinking concerning Kolb and I really think a reality check will come if we drop this game against the Rams.

Yes, I would love for the young guys on the line to get experience….but at what expense?

If we drop winable games in the beginning of the season….would that be worth them getting experience?

The answer to that is no.

Right now the Eagles should caution on the side of experience and slowly work the guys who are not game tested into the line later after more practices, watching the vets handle game day.

If Watkins showed us anything this preseason then maybe the support would be there…but he have done nothing to show he’ll be ready for a full dose of top NFL tackles..and that will translate to Vick not having a pocket to step up into….and with an extra guy flying in every play? Mistakes!

Fumbles and interceptions…it starts at the line of scrimmage.

Losses is the only thing Reid responds to.

Every team will follow the same blueprint that lead to our lackluster play going into the playoffs, leading to our earlt exit.

Starting with Rams.

This loss will not be on Vick….

Watch the offensive line.

I’m excited and can’t wait for the whistle to blow for the BIRDS first game but the o line is my only worry. I trust in Reid and Mudd but Really!!!!??? We should not have a minute doubt in an o line which is protecting a 100million dollar franchise qb which is projected to pave the way to our first trophy! Hope these cats are right!!!!!! Songs – “Schill you’re right…, our offensive line is good to go”.

Hmm, are you aware you have a reading comprehension problem or are you just taking my comment, that yes, it’s question marks and likely struggles early but potential to not hurt the team in the long run, in the wrong way and fitting it into your ‘all or nothing/perfect right now or doomed for ever’ mentality?

Either way, you need to get your head checked.

I’m also concerned about our offensive line. The key is we must run the ball early. We have three of the best running backs we ever has in Reid era. Now its time to take advantage of their talent. Then you allow this young guys on the offensive line to gain some confidence when they have to pass block. We will be the Rams, however, our play makers must step up. I expect our defensive line to put pressure on Bradford early to set the tone. Then Vick must get the ball out quickly to avoid being sacked and get the receivers in the flow really. I see McCoy being the star on offense while Trent Cole will get three sacks!!!!! Birds 31 Rams 24!!!!!!!

HAHAHA I think everyone is over evaluating this Rams team. The 7-9 Rams team in the worst division in football. Did I miss something with this Rams team? They had Spagnola and Jackson last year and won 7 games. lol. Vick, Jackson, McCoy, Maclin. lol I think the Rams are in trouble. This isnt Dec in the cold after a long season against Minny. If the oline is weak expect Vick to rush for 100 yards. Hell what are fans gonna do when we play teams over .500? We got a 500 million dollar payroll and we cant beat the Rams are you kidding me? QB better, WR better, RB push, D=line better, Secondary better. Every team we play may have better LB and oline.Does that mean we go 0-16?

Why in the world did we sign Nnamdi, Babin, Jenkins, DRC? This team is worst than last year according to fans. We cant beat a 7-9 Rams team who boast 2 WR who were released by the Eagles. lol, I wanna know who is gonna catch a pass? Mr Jackson welcome to 8 in the box and alot of run blitzes. Nnamdi and DRC lock um up 1 on 1 . I would think Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson are gonna have a loooong day.

The 2 biggest issues concerning our team last season, was the right corner spot, along with the poor right side of our offensive line.

The season before last was our safety position and the right side of our offensive line.

This year we’ve address the right corner with more than one player …but you will never guess what is the other area of concern?

That’s right……..The right side of the offensive line.

So here’s the problem.

Vick is left handed which means the right side is his blind side, which should be the strong part of the line…not weak.

Get it?

We’ve going into the 3rd season with the same weaknesses along the line, so it’s not incredulous when fans are concerned about this.

We’re not just talking about this season…this have plagued Reid for the last quarter of his tenure here.

You guys are here saying “give the guys a chance” ,when the first game of last season tells us what can happen going into a season with inadeguate pass protection in a pass happy offense.
Remember the starting quarterback getting concussed in the first game of the season?

If Vick gets injured in the early part of this season while these youngsters learn on the job…our hopeful season will be lost, and make the big signings we’re excited about “void”.

get it?

The question that should be answered …

Is it worth the health of your starting quarterback to have “not ready offensive linemen” learn on the job?

That’s the risk.

And after so many years with the same weaknesses at the same positions on the line…..going into an hopeful season in which we can win it all..
is inexcusable.

Play the guys who are battled tested while the young players develop into starting material.

Right now the Eagles are playing roulette with $100,000,000 on black.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed and pray all the things that can go wrong, won’t go wrong.

In a perfect world these young guys in the middle of our line, on the blind side play lights out.

We’re not in a perfect world.

Teams will focus on this glaring weakness to make Vick uncomfortable regularly…

Keep in mind guys, Refs will not give Vick the calls Manning and Brady recieves. When linemen get their hands on Vick, they’re allowed to slam him to the turf at will with no threat of a roughing the passer penalty.

We’re fans who state the obvious and if we can see the weakness so can our opponents.

usually we’re right.

Songs guess what. The oline has sucked for years even with the overrated Runyon and Thomas. The funny thing about it is the oline sucked last year and was 1 pass play away from sending the eventual world champs home.I do agree with you about working the rookies in after they have proven themselves. I to cant understand how Watkins all of the sudden cant block. What the hell did he do in college to warrant a 1st round pick, He must of been blocking someone. Hell Im just glad Justice and Dunlap arent on the field. We are fortunate that in the last 20 years we have had 3 of the most elusive QBs on Earth gracing our huddle. McNabb, Cunningham and now Vick with VY in the wings.lol. I guarentee you that mass protection on that right side will happen after the first sign of trouble. The Rams can blitz. They have never seen the likes of Vick. They aint NY. I expect Vick to get out of there if need be. Its on turf? Vick is running a 4.3 they cant do nothing with that. But this isnt the real show. Wait until Atlanta. lol

Good stuff guys…I say fire Reid after this year if we don’t make it to the Sb. This is year in and year out. We seem to add a few pieces to get us over the top only to cut off our feet at other places which leaves us out of the running (no pun intended). This happens every year and I blame Reid because he drafts these softies and not the beastly pouncey players. Reid claims he loves his o lineman, yet we seem to have the worst o-line in the league. fire Reid if we don’t get to the Sb; let alone win.

and the Packers had an undrafted CB in Sam Shields making big plays down the stretch and in the playoffs too.. Allteams have great players but to me it’s abou the coaching in game situations and making real-time adjustments and creating match-ups that take advantage of your teams talent and this is why I think the EAgles don’t win it all.. WHen you have coaches like Belichek,Peyton and McCarthy who all excell as this where Coach AR/MM are too predictable and DC J Castillo a complete unlnown and will continue to try to squeeze a square into a round hole and I don’t care how many All-Pros the Eagles have on paper, until this Coaching staff can improve their on the field in game time situations on making the proper adjustments, then it’s the same old, same old to me until proven otherwise…
Not being negative but this Eagles Coaching Staff has to prove it to me first

I would rather get the reality check early so Reid is forced to play the experienced players and run the ball in the future.

Usually if we win a game Reid tends to ignore the flaws until they come back to bite us when it’s all on the line

Reid didn’t listen last year and ignored the center position with Pouncy there for the taking, (when Mcglynn got molested in the preseason early) Reid activated Jamaal Jackson which caused him to go down last year.

Reid wanted “Koncussed Kolb” to be the franchise until the first game proved he wasn’t.

That allowed Vick to go on a streak that pulled Andy’s fat out of the fire.

I believe this game will be the reality check that leads to positive change.

An embarrassing lost against the Rams is what we need for the long haul and because of that…

I’m picking the Rams 24-20.

Picking with my head.

Not my heart.

Lol. The Eagles haven’t even played a single game that counts and posters on here are in their mid-season gloom and doom form. Wow. I really believe many of the commenters here have seriously overvalued the rest of the teams in the League and undervalued the Eagles. The O-Line is definitely a legit area of concern. But many of the commenters here are talking as if the Eagles will be lining up with 3 OL instead of 5 with all of the Vick getting hurt talk. There will be breakdowns for sure, but based on what I am seeing on this roster, you may only be getting Vick for 2 1/2 – 3 qtrs (why keep him in late when you are up 3-4 scores)? Yeah. I really do think it will be like that. Unless the offense turns the ball over and gives up points, I really don’t envision the Eagles being in too many shootouts. Nailbiters yes due to OL struggles. But the way teams will be forced to attack the Eagles requires discipline and patience by working the middle of the field and testing their LB’s in the run game. Opponents Cannot afford to get behind by more than 10 points against the Birds as it plays into the teeth of their defensive philosophy. In a nutshell, here are the basic keys to the Eagles winning 10+ games this year: Offense – protect the football, Marty and Andy game management. Defense – get off the field consistently (and not by giving up touchdowns!)

Last I checked, Indy went many years without getting past the 1st round of the playoffs, and have done squat since the one year they won it all.

At the end of the day players beat their opponents…not coaches.

If Mudd was any good he would coach Jamaal Jackson up to man the center and use him for his game time experience.

Mudd gonna find out guick that he’s not in Indy where if you breathe near Manning the refs are throwing the yellow laundry.

Do you guys think that helped Mudd’s offensive lines any?

2 Predictable consclusions from game with the RAms

#1) Eagles jump out to an early lead and blow them off th efield 34-13 and then everyone jumps back on the SUper Bowl Badwagon and the best team in NFL

#2) EAgles come out flat, Vick is pummelled and the Eagles LB are taken advantage and Rams pound th erock to win 23-17 in a close loss.. Then everyone will say Fire the Coach, bench Matthews and Watkins and bring back J Trotter and Nick Cole….

The most realistic situation is somewhere in-between for this Eagle team will be a work in progress the 1st month of the Season like all the other 31 Teams in the NFL. If the Eagles come out with enegy and just play smart football and protect the ball, they should win this game rather easily but we all know the Eagles never do anything easy so in the end, it will probably be a closer game then is should be, but a Win is a Win is a Win in the NFL..

I will reserve my Judgement on this 2011 Team after the 1st 4 games to see how they are (hopefully they should be at least 3-1 at this time)

im glad the buccs are kept under the radar after their play last season, thats awesome and they are allowed room to grow
but no, detroit will be lucky to reach 8 in a div witht he champs, bears hosted the nfc ch game, and min is trying to get back to the postseason after a few yrs removed. and thats just in their div, what about philly, no, atl, tb, perhaps one team from our div gets in that picture (either nyg or dal)

so all that talk and hype, sure we have a target, were always up there and our acquisitions are obvious upgrades to everyone that doesnt come onto this damn site, whether die hard fan or average fan

idc if you like matthews, hes on our team and is starting, perhaps he comes into his own in that role as the season goes on, or maybe splits with role or gets supplanted by him or someone else. i just wanna win games and were in prime position to take games and the ship, poke holes because there arent many to poke, ur reachign for shit to go wrong bc thats what ur used to, its time for a new philly state of mind but it wont happen

when we win it all this yr (or next yr) i dont wanna hear any more bullshit

rams are an easy win, stop the nonsense or you cant be taken seriously
its a good game 1 game for us, it wont be 38-3 like a couple yrs back but itll be a convincing win, and it should be
if were the lions i get ur thinking, but were the eagles a winning franchise (to the furthest extent possible without being crowned, they deserve ur trust and credit not ur pms-ing)

Jet’s won’t even make the playoffs this Season and finish 8-8
I think they are the most overrated team in the AFC, COots finish with about 4-5 Wins too for I think it’s a good possibility that Manning doesn’t play in 2011( He will not practice this week at all and definitely is missing the opener)

Chargers will bounce back and I believe the Dolphins will make some news besides the usual Patriots/Steelers & Ravens making the playoffs ..The KC Chiefs had a great seasons last year but will miss OC Charlie Weiss more than people think and HC Todd HAley is going to assume the Play-Calling as OC while being the HC too which is never a good sign so I expect them to take a step back and Chargers take the AFC West

eagles/chargers superbowl.
jets miss playoffs at 9-7 they are overrated
i like miami esp with adding mike nolan as def coord
i like the jags/titans to make it a fight in the afc south
the browns beat the patriots and packers last yr and i like their future
the panthers could make their div opponents work for wins in those wins with them
the ravens are overrated, no passing game and cant defend the pass
steelers win that div again
colts arent even good with peyton, they did nothing and will be lucky to win 8-9 games regardless
