Eagles Will Need To Protect Vick, While Stopping Jacobs & Bradshaw

While the big controversy heading into this Week 3 matchup seems to be the talk surrounding the New York defense’s acting skills, that’s just one of the many subplots to the NFC East battle on Sunday against the Giants. Here are three of them to watch for on Sunday.

Will the Eagles be able to zero in on the Giants offensive backfield?

On the evidence of the first two games, if someone were asked to create a blueprint of how to attack the Eagles defense, you might often find that the general basis of that blueprint would be attacking the middle, where the Eagles much maligned linebackers are, sitting right in front of two unproven safeties in Kurt Coleman and Jarrad Page. For this to happen, the opposing team needs two things, a good running game and good tight ends.

The Giants don’t exactly have fear-inspiring threats at tight end, so this leaves the onus on their running backs to have a big game against the Eagles. Dominic Hixon is out for the rest of season while Mario Manningham could be missing in action as well on Sunday night, and considering that we’ve learned to expect lock down coverage from Nnamdi Asomugha over the years the Eagles should be able to gamble more often on Sunday, stuffing the box, sending blitzes, and at the very least bluffing them on many occasions.

Giants running backs Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs are so diverse (Jacobs with his power, Bradshaw with his elusiveness) that they may just be able to keep the Giants in the game if their skills are used to full effect.

Bradshaw is a game breaker, who can put points on the board every time he gets his hands on the football. The Giants could hand the ball off to Bradshaw or they could dump it to him using screens or short passes out of the backfield.

They could also use Jacobs against the Eagles linebackers by running him right at the undersized group. If the Giants can block the Eagles defensive tackles they can get the Birds linebackers isolated against Jacobs.

On Sunday, Tom Coughlin will try to type pf strategy to avoid a 7th straight loss to Philly but should the Juan Castillo-led defense key in on stopping those two players, and find even mild success, the Birds should be alright.

Will wide receiver Jeremy Maclin continue his Pro Bowl level play?

When Mike Kafka threaded a pass smack dab in the middle of Jeremy Maclin’s chest last Sunday night, only for the receiver to drop it, it made everything the former Missouri man did during game seem irrelevant. Indeed that dropped pass did signify the end of the game for the Eagles, but before that, Maclin was arguably the best player on the field for Philadelphia having caught 13 passes for 171 yards and two TD receptions.

Against the Giants depleted secondary, Maclin may have a good chance to redeem himself with another good performance, especially if the Giants defense performs as badly as they fake injuries.

Will Michael Vick be able to avoid injury while under the pressure from the Giants pass rush?

Alright, we all knew it was coming. Any sort of game preview really can’t go on without mentioning Vick, can it? After all, whether or not it was the main cause for the Eagles’ down fall, when Vick exited the game with a concussion against the Falcons last week, the lead soon left with him as Philly went on to lose by a narrow margin. It is that same concussion that, it appears, Vick has recovered from just in time to play the Giants come 1pm Sunday afternoon.

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah, the main man is back, right? Well, sort of. Vick is, and always will be the biggest part of the team, as are most quarterbacks in today’s league. Considering this, there may be some who might feel a slight sense of uneasiness with Vick coming back so soon, because quite simply with injuries, caution can hardly ever be a bad thing, especially with so much of the season ahead of us.

The Eagles are setting the standard right now as far as the pass rush goes in the NFC East, but the Giants are not too bad themselves when it comes to getting to the quarterback. Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul are both outstanding pass rushers and they’re likely to get a shot or two at Vick.

Osi Umenyiora isn’t expected to play against the Eagles on Sunday, but Pierre-Paul has stepped in and been more than enough of a pass rushing partner of Tuck. They’re both big, fast and tremendous one-on-one pass rushers. At times each of them is capable of beating the blocks against them, getting to Vick and delivering an injury-causing hit.

Granted, Vick hasn’t had anything like a shoulder or hip injury, parts of the body that opposing players would be more likely to target, but it is a concussion, and with the memories of Brian Westbrook’s time at Philly lingering over Lincoln Financial Field, the very last thing that anyone wants is another situation remotely like it.

The Final Verdict: Expect the Eagles to come out on top with a victory, but there’s no guarantee that their quarterback will come out of the game with a clean bill of health. While few games between these are ever one- sided, this might just be the easiest division game that Philadelphia will play this year.

“The idea of having Jamar Chaney be the middle linebacker this week, then move him back to strongside linebacker next week boggles my mind.”
….Garry Cobb

Boggles the mind is an understatement…

When Andy Reid traded out of the 1st round and gave the pick to a division rival. That Boogled my mind.

When Andy Reid saw his starting center go down at the end of the season and made no effort to replace him. That Boogled my mind.

When Andy Reid started this season protecting Mike Vikes blindside with Knee Injury guy, Could not start in College guy, and 3 time back surgery guy… That boogled my mind.

But hiring a offensive line coach to be a defensive coordinator sent me strait to the medicine cabinet for some Zanex, To the dentist for some novacane.
To the emergency room for some spinal anesthesia.

On the way I crashed my motorcycle into a car that caught on fire. Luckily some kind hearted pedestrians pulled me from under the burning car. (did you see that young girl get in there and try to lift that car? awesome) Any way what they did not report on TV was, when they dragged me out, I asked them was Andy Reid still the head coach, when they said yes…

I told them to put me back under the burning car, and have a nice day.

Vick should sit out the game
Too early in the season to risk him

Missing 1 Game in a 16 Game NFL Season is equivalent to missing 25 gamesin MLB Season.. If he’s been cleared to play, then play him…
Giants have no DE Osi playing, a banged up DE J Tuck, no MLB J Goff, No Starting CB in T Thomans, Tteir Nickel CB Back in B Johnson, No 1st 2 Round Draft Picks in CB Prince Amukarama and DT M Austin… If the Eagles don’t lite this Giant Defense up, then I will be concerned moving forward..

Paulman…when your talking about football games like this..Rivalry, division foe, 5 game winning streak, last matchup was one of the most embarrassing moments in the history of their organization…you can throw out all the stats, injuries, records etc..Im expecting the Giants to play their best game of the season.

Now there is no doubt in my mind that we will still win this game..we are the better team and we have the giants number which we have proved over and over the last 3 years. To me El isn’t even a top 15-20 QB in the league right now, hasn’t proved anything since he had Plax where he would just throw passes up in the air that I could throw and Plax would just make the play. Jacobs is not the guy he was either, very slow and actually goes down a lot easier than he actually should.

But if its not a blowout and somewhat of a close game I won’t be worried at all because of the other factors of this game. I mean we already know the Giants like to CHEAT and embarrass themselves with faking injuries This is a desperate team that knows their not good enough to win games straight up so who knows what they will try to pull tmrw.

I cant believe people on here are still worried about Vick playing this week, The hit on Maclin was 10 times worse than the Vick hit and they put him back in the game 2 plays later, Vick passed every test he took and has a clean bill of health, evrybody has to chill out, Vick leads us to Victory sunday !!

I agree Andrew,
The hit really wasn’t that bad , It was his neck snapping back was what I was more concerned about , He’s been lceared and is good to go, why rest him .. you play to win and Vick gives the EAgles the best shot to win the Game, but he does not be smart out there and protect himself at all times.. If EAgles Protect the ball, eliminate the mental penalties, they win going away 31-16…

The Problem is we have PUSSY recievers. They’re scary, afraid of getting hit. Desean is proof. Hes had 3 HUGE DROPS In the last two games. You can clearly see hes afraid of getting hit, but he wants more money than Holmes.

DESEAN IS THE MOST UNSURED HAND RECIEVER WE HAVE ON THIS TEAM. HE DROPS WAY TO MANY KEY PASSES TO BE CONSIDERED A TOP RECIEVER IN MY BOOK. I WOULD BE CURSING HIS ASS OUT IF I WAS VICK. DESEAN HAS HAD 3 TD DROPS IN THE LAST TWO GAMES. AND THAT ROBINSON HIT IS WHY MAC DROPPED THAT BALL AT THE END OF THE GAME.

HA! HA!HA! I’m with you bsmvideos . Those are the very same things that boggled my mind about Reid. That stuff is unbelievable. Would Bill Belichick do those things? I’m guessing, he!! no! I wish there were some way I could enter his miind and sit there in total fascination, and utter disbelief, as it whirls around and around and then comes up with some of the most psychedelic sh!t known to mankind.

I agree, supabad. That’s the very same thought that came across my mind as soon as the ball left Kafka’s hand. Just goes to show you what strategic geniuses we have coaching this team. The same thought that crossed we, the fans minds, never occurred to our Rhodes scholar coaches. It should have been obvious in M’s recent traumatized condition, he’d be hearing “phantom” footsteps and would “short arm” the catch. It’s just a common sense strategy that didn’t require forty years of pro ball experience. They should have called a play for Avant or another receiver.

Who remembers when one ANDREW WALTER REID allowed McNabb to get sacked 12 times because he was too stupid and stubborn to have a plan B. Father ANDREW will get Vick hurt again. We will never see a SB with ANDREW WALTER REID. Time for the owner to stop the fairy crap and put REID on display. LURIE, times yours!
