Eagles Nate Allen Starting At Safety Over Kurt Coleman

Eagles second-year safety Nate Allen didn’t get much done on Sunday when he tried to approach Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw, but he will be starting this week against the San Francisco 49ers. Bradshaw threw Allen to the ground like he was a bag of trash.

He told the media today that he knows he must tackle much better than that. The Birds are going to work on tackling at practice this afternoon.

I think the main reason Allen will be starting is because he’s got a better chance of covering the Niners Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis than any of their other safeties. I wouldn’t be surprised if Davis has a big day against the Birds because every other decent tight end whom the Eagles have played has had a big day against the Eagles defense.

I don’t think Allen should be starting over Kurt Coleman, I think he should be starting ahead of Jarrad Page. Coleman missed that tackle on Sunday, but he’s a better coverage guy than Page. Page is one of the slowest safeties I’ve ever seen.

Allen has been trying to battle back from the knee injury which he suffered a year ago. He had surgery to repair an ACL tear and told me it was feeling better each week.

Not sure how I feel about this move but I hope Nate Allen really steps it up and just lets it rip.. He’s played way too cautious so far this year and I guess is still lacking in confidence from recovering 100% back from his knee surgery from last December.. But after 2 months of Camp,Pre-season and now a few weeks into the Regular Season, it’s time to step it up and go for it..If Nate Allen can revert to how he played ad the beginning of last Season, then this is a big plus for the Defense, If he plays like he did towards the end of last season (befire he was hurt) and how he has looks this season, then this move may actully hurt the Eagle D more.. It’s time now for Nate Allen to play and go “All-In”, His team needs it, the Eagles Defense needs it and Nate Allen needs it.. This may be his last opportunity to show everyone why he was the #55 Selection made in the 2010 Draft..”Carpe Diem” as they say..

So, let’s make this clear.
Bum ass Nate Allen got torched in the preseason and couldn’t win a starting spot. Right?

Bum ass Page gets beat regularly…slow ass hell..That’s the starting safeties for the Eagles?

Coleman is a 7th rounder….What can you expect?

Andy is the reincarnation of the guy who’s job was to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.

How did the interchangeable linebackers work?

It’s futile…..This team will do noting this year and it’s time to look forward to 2012.

While Bradshaw may have trucked Allen at least Allen was in the vicinity of the ball. Coleman has been the invisible man regarding being anywhere around the football thus far.

Paulman…I’m tired of this injury excuse for Allen..

.HE WAS GETTING TORCHED BEFORE THE INJURY!!!

HE WAS GETTING RAN OVER BEFORE THE INJURY!!!!

WHEN BRITT HAD A CAREER DAY WAS ALLEN HURT?

HELL NO!!!!

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKS AFTERWARDS WHEN TEAMS WERE MATCHING UP AGAINST HM IN THE SLOT?

HE’S ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WE HAD THE WORST RED ZONE DEFENSE….BEFORE THE INJURY!!!

LET’S STOP IT ALREADY!

ALLEN IS A SOFT BITCH!

GORE! DAVIS!

If you have these guys on your fantasy team you’ll do well!

very well.

Teams don’t need good quarterbacks against this defense. Offensive minds can outscheme BUM ASS Castillo with his non agressive defense.

This defense is tentative as hell and that starts from the coaching.

Why don’t we promote the guy selling popcorn to take over the defense?

Heard he played some linebacker in the semipros.

OK, Songs, So who do you suggest we put in for Coleman or Page? Was Allen not a rookie last season, he got torched no doubt, growing pains is part of the game..But Allen did show some promise at points last season! Early on in fact….What the hell is Pages excuse? he’s a veteran…

To Songs

#1) I agree, no more excuses for Nate Allen which is why I stated that this is his last chance to become the player that he was drafted for and honestly I am pulling for him for there really is not a better alternative.. (wonder what Marlin “Billie Jean” Jackson is doign .. Goof Grief..

#2) Wasn’t there a “Weight Limit” for the Titanic…

To Real Talk 777
I am not Anti-Eagles, I am Anti-Any Reid and have been consistent with this for the last few seasons from his pass-happy schemes for a cold-weather team, for their poor Drafts and Roster Management Decisions to his game time adjustments (or lack there of) to the mis-management of the Clock, Time Outs and Challenge Calls… Outside of that, I think Andy Reid is a great Coach…

Agreed Paul…good point. No more excuses.Theres a saying in coaching secondary players….trust your eyes and dont think..react…Nate’s away from that when last year i saw a lil of that and liked him as our safety.

Larrwd…that was insightful….im sure you know more about defense the Juan. The safety position in the pro’s is such that you have too know each position.

As Gary stated,Juan cant make the guys wrap and leg drive.Allen was in position to stop that.So was Coleman and Asmo. Just a breakdwon. Calling the blitz was supect but come on..wrap.

@Llarwd – its not just that one play…Coleman played well in the Falcolns game I’ll give him that…besides that, there has not been one game in which I watched in which I did not have to cuss at the TV screen because Coleman missed a tackle or let the WR get above him in coverage….you’d think I’d like Coleman more considering we share the same last name and possibly could be kin, but all that aside, he is ass! I totally agree with you about Castillo being a dumb ass, the musical chairs he’s playing at the LB position is risk taking…in fact he set the D back when he moved Chaney from the middle and started Matthews early on…Then changing the LB core up again, forcing Matthews to adjust to different assignment/role – I knew Matthews would struggle, he’s a rookie….This move will either make Matthews work harder or hurt his confidence and he will be ass until he exits the NFL….

I still like this ballclub too win 11 games. We’ll see.Im not as down on them as others.Think if the Gianst lost too us,in reflecting on that game they had too have it. They lose that game to us and there season is on hold until they play us again.

And i think we’re gonna destroy the Niners. They scored under 20 on the Bengals. There qb has been sacked 13 times.

Did you ever think maybe they are starting the season in base formations is to get everyone on the same page? Remember, this is a different defense than the one we had before.

Nev856,
Bradley looks ok in Arizona’s 3-4 Scheme, He’s playing mostly on passing downs and is playing at one of the ILB positions, he out about 1/2 the plays..
I tell you who looks pretty good is MLB Joe Mays out in Denver, He’s having a pretty good season as their #1 Starter so far on a pretty bad Defense…
Ernie Sims lost his starting position on the Colts and is playing Special Teams and is a back-up

Living in a dream world. You cant teach toughness.Does anyone really believe that magically Nate Allen isnt gonna get run over? Eithier you got it or you dont, period. They said he couldnt tackle in college. What a surprise do you think hes gonna tackle here? The alarmng thing about him is ok you cant tackle but you better be getting turnovers and covering everything that moves. He cant cover anyone eithier. I saw this in the first couple game last year. We need a whole new scouting depatment and general manager. This is ridiculous.

I like Curt Coleman a bit better than Nate Allen… I agree they shouldnt bench Coleman..

this is the main problem with this defense…. Juan is doing soo much shuffling, the players (even the good ones like Nnamdi) dont look comfortable doing anything because Juan doing seem to have a base defense.. Why soo much zone with these corners? why all the blitzing when we get pressure just fine without it?

Personally I just think the defense isnt good because it has no base identity

Songs, you are right about Colt Anderson being the toughest player along the Safety position, Unfortunately he has the “white man’s disease” and can’t run very well or jump very high, so he would be a big liability in Pass Coverage..
As far as giving NAte Allen another chance, I believe if he misses this opportunuity to establish himself as the Starter and play well, then he most likley won;t remain in the teams future plans… I don’t think anyone expects him to be Brian Dawkins for that will never happen, but Allen neds to get his confidence back, I think it;s all mental with hi mand he’s thinking to damn much and just needs to let it go and play…
Wheres Sean Considine when you need him… Good Grief…

To Rasheed,
I agree the Defense has no Identity and it’s probably becuse it’s Defenseive Coordinator has no experience or no identity himself… Is he agreesive, is he a blitzer, a cover 2, drop zone schemes,Stress the A Gap, the B Gap, etc,etc..
Castillo is still figuring it all out and until he is confident is what he’s doing, it’s probably hard to expect the players to buy into it and know what they’re supposed to be doing too..

Allen has the most potential of all our safeties and I believe he will be a huge addition if his knee is fully healthy. I would Start Coleman @ SS instead of Page. Page is not impressive in any area of his game. I think Jarret and Allen will be a good combo next year but for this year Coleman should play along side Allen like they did last year.

Lets rember that Coleman and Allen both played well last year together and are both very young. They are going to be inconsistent, it comes with young players. It all reverts back to letting Dawk go a year early and also Letting Mikel go a year early. The Eagles who are usually right on when it comes to releasing players before they decline missed on both Dawk and Mikel

Lets look at some other moves the past 3 years which created our lack of talent and experience at the LB position. T. Spikes, Witherspoon, Bradley, J. Mays and Sims were all on the eagles roster within the last 3 years…….all for the exception of Sims are still playing at a high level and would start for our team. Mays has looked good in Denver. Spikes has toughness.

Eagles have no heart on Defense and lack toughness. Missed tackles is a sign of a lack of effort and concentration. If you do not have a nasty edge to you and play like a punk then I dont want you on the Eagles hit the road…….and so far only the D-Line has shown that they have some bark and will be bullies….the LB’s and secondary are being punks and need to go if thats how its going to be all year get in new players. That crap is not Eagles football and would never happen if JJ or Dawk were still here. Maybe its time to bring in a disciple of Buddy…..yes Jeff Fisher…he will bring some additude to out D.

My short term sugesstion is to fire or remove Juan Castillo of his Duties and hire Tim Hauck (the former DC of the Titans who has coached for/with Jeff Fisher and DL Coach Washburn for years.. He was a tough-nosed Safety in his playing days and would take care of the LB/Secondary Corps in a hurry while Washburn runs the DL…. Mayve to save FAce, the EAgles can Say Castillo has a family Emergency south of the Boarder which requires his immediate attn and that he is on a leave of abscence… C’Mon Andy, You know you have to do this if you want to have a legitimate Playoff Chance this Season… The season will be 25% over after this Sunday’s game, no more time to waste or tinker around….

I would Take Gruden as well…..The Eagles used to have big maulers on the O-Line with Andrews, Tra, Runyan and Herrimans along with jackson. But this year that has changed due to Mudd…….Time for all coaches to hot the road if they do not turn it around and get Fisher and his crew in here next year. One of Fishers boys is already here (Washburn). I already laid into the D for being soft, heartless and a bunch of punks that I would hate to have with me if a fight goes down. But the dam O-Line needs to pop the D in the mouth at the 1/2 yd line. Also if players are pounding Vick and some of the hits are boarder line they need to protect Vick and get in theor face. We let the Giants come to the Link and punch us in the mouth and talk trash about it.
LETS get some swagger and start being agressive!!!!!! This D is not a good example of Philly and how we are. I am going to demand all players except for the D-Line to turn in their key cards and hit the road if they do not change. I would rather see hungry players making 750K a year than over pay players @ 3-12 million each to be soft and steel money from us!!!

Coach Reid needs to play this documentary about Reggie White and Brown to the Defense and say its either nasty like them and how they represented the city or being sent home.

NAte Allen had a strong 1st 4 games last Seasons and then struggled mid-seasn until he got injured.. He appeared to physically and mentally hit the old “Rookie Wall” by late October as he was adjusting to the NFl Game
To say he was a Beast last Season is inaccurate and far from the truth I am sorry to say..(please don’t believe everything you read by Dave Spadaro)
He had a good September and it was downhill little by little after that and was not playing well at all just prior to his INjury, but that’s in the past and I am willing and ready to see the real NAte Allem emerge for the Team needs him and he needs to play well to get his confidence back…

To Larrwd
That’s the Problem with Nate Allen, As a Safetyin the NFL, you should be a much better tackler than a CB and that’s the problem with this Secondary is that none of the Safeties have been sure tacklers or big hitters so far this Season..You have to send the message to opposing Receivers that there will be a price to pay when you come across the middle… All the good Defenses have those Enforcers.. and I can’t recall a championship team that didn;t have one and the EAgles do not have any true enforces in their Secondary.. Look at the Steelers Polamula, Ravens Ed Reed, Packers with Woodson, Saints had Darren Sharper a couple years back as did the Patriots with Rodney Harrison as did Colts with Bob Sanders and the TB Bucs with John Lynch,, th eBroncos with Steve Atwater, etc, etc,
