Pronger, Schenn Out With Concussion-Like Symptoms

Eight days ago, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Chris Pronger, who is currently rehabbing from knee surgery, “said he had been experiencing headaches and nausea like never before.  He revealed he had passed a concussion test.”

It seems that, despite somehow passing a baseline concussion test, Pronger is still experiencing very obvious concussion-like symptoms. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced today that Pronger will be out of the line-up indefinitely while they try to determine how to properly address his ailment.

Flyers Faithful posted a transcript of Holmgren’s discussion with the media earlier today.

“I think over the last few days he’s had some difficulties… a fairly persistent headache, just sluggish feeling – so we’re just trying to do the right thing here and get him checked out by the doctors in Pittsburgh and just see what we’re dealing with,” said Holmgren.  “Is it a concussion?  I don’t know that we know that.  We want to get a better idea, obviously.”

The news doesn’t come as a surprise, but it is certainly disappointing.  Pronger has skated in just 63 regular season games since the start of the 2010-11 season, when his 7-year, $34.5 million contract kicked in.

Holmgren indicated that he intends to sit tight for the time being with the defensemen he’s got, but it will be a delicate state of affairs until at least Erik Gustafsson returns from his wrist surgery in January.

Holmgren also announced that Brayden Schenn suffered what they believe to be a mild concussion following last Saturday’s game in Phoenix.  Schenn will remain out of the line-up against the Tampa Bay Lightning but is “hopeful” for Tuesday’s game against the Washington Capitals.

Sorry to hear about the Concussion, Pronger may have to hang it up,
His body has taking a beating over the last couple of seasons and the Flyers are foolish to expect anything significant from him for the rest of this Season and possibly the remainder of his Career..
They need to move forward and if they get some games from him by season’s end or playoff time, then consider them fortunate, but they should count on it and then tell everyone come Spring, “Well if we only had a heatlhy Pronger”.. the Point ism, you don’t have a helathy Pronger and haven’t in over a year, so do count on it, don’t build your Defense around a player who is at the end of the line and most likely relegated to a part-time player at best…..

Should have been “don’t count” on Pronger (which I stated back in the off-season) he’s damaged goods and at the end of the line…

Great win last night! I moved here to Tampa 8 yrs ago and these hillbillies down here still talk about the Flyers losing to their Lightning in the play-offs and the Bucs beating the Eagles. I have to remind them there was only one championship game between the two and we won it in 2008. Although Marty St Louis was out, the rookies stepped up and I was real proud of them. Hope Claude and Bryz are ok. As for Prongs, I love him. but I think it’s time to hang up the skates. If he was only 5 yrs younger.
