What Did Eagles Coach Andy Reid Really Say?

Andy Reid the head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles came out and spoke to the fans of the Eagles for the first time since the Eagles ended a very disappointing season.  He told everyone that 8-8 was not acceptable and he had to get better. He also told everyone that he did offer the defensive coordinator position to Steve Spagnuolo and that it was an open ended job he offered him.

Andy let everyone know that Juan Castillo would be coming back as his defensive coordinator. The only change is that the Eagles will have a new defensive back coach.  Reid named Todd Bowles his defensive back coach.

Andy Reid why did you not offer Steve Spagnuolo total control of the defense.

Are you kidding the fans here.  Spagnuolo won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants as their defensive coordinator in 2008.  Why did Reid want him to share the responsibility with Juan Castillo and Jim Washburn. Reid’s thought process was he thought two great coaches on defense were better than one.

Juan Castillo is a great defensive coach?  Really Andy come on now, what are you thinking here?  Castillo is in no way on the same level as Steve Spagnuolo.

Andy you just completely insulted Spags and no wonder he went to the New Orleans Saints as their defensive coordinator.  The ego again has just completely blinded Reid’s judgement here.  He just did not do the right thing here.  Andy if you really wanted to fix it you could of.

You should have given Spagnuolo complete control and the money.  The Saints did and they have a shot a winning a championship and the Saints organiztion did not insult him either.

Castillo is back and really did the Eagles organization what him even back in 2011 as the defensive coordinator.  When the Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie gave his state of the Eagles address on January 3rd, he was very clear to state that making Castillo the defensive coordinator might of been the last choice on a list of people the Eagles had.

Juan was the last guy standing and really was not Andy Reid’s first choice, second, or even third choice.  Andy Reid though wanted to give Juan a shot at it.

What the Eagles have here is a defensive coordinator here who they just really did not want in that position last season or this upcoming season but it just fell into place that way.  The defense this past season played very badly and just looked bad at times.

This whole thing sounds like a soap opera.  Eagles fans are you confused yet because I am totally confused.  Why is Juan Castillo still here?  Juan did not even find out he was returning in 2012 until this past Monday.  Pretty apparent that the Eagles were looking around for other options.

Andy did name Todd Bowles his new defensive back coach. Why not name him the co-defensive coordinator title you insulted Spagnuolo with. Philadelphia Eagles fans after listening to Andy Reid’s news conference on Tuesday afternoon there is no reason to think that things within the organization are going to change.

The 14th season under the direction of Andy Reid looks like the same old, song and dance again.   I don’t sense any excitement among the Eagles faithful and why should there be.  The Eagles fan base is a pretty intelligent group and there is no way that they are buying Andy’s goods.

Come on Andy Reid that is all you had to say and offer the fans of the Philadelphia Eagles.  Thank you and the time is yours.  Hey Andy Reid when is it your time to leave.  Well from where I sit it should of been three years ago.  It is just going to be the same old, same old.

Yep same ol same ol song and dance. This is a soft organization from top to bottom. Any other team owner would have fired castillo because this was a wasted season with to much talent. We need a coach with a big pair of balls to cut his buddies loose who underperform. There’s too much friendliness among Reid and his staff. We aint winning anything until we get a real coach in here who could give a crap less about demoting buddies and friends. if washburn stays, and under a ney DC doesn’t want to scrap the wide nine, so be it -let him move on or retire. We need some fire in this organization real bad. What a crap-clown circus of a team.

Sorry – I meant to say that: if a new D-Coord comes here and wants to scrap the wide 9 and washburn objects, he can either retire or go to another team. We need a hungry animal type coach in here. We may need to get one of these top college winning coaches like Harbaugh in here to add some new young and fresh playcalling and scheme in here. These old NFL coaches are slowly being pushed out the door with this young fresh HC talent coming in. Fire Reid as soon as next season ends. It’s time for a new start.

Most DC would not challenge DL Washburn, and most who do not like the Wide 9 would not even discuss coming to Phila.. Washburn would need to get fired first, then a new DC Could come in place to set up his staff,schemes..
Coach AR loves Washburn and the Wide 9 because AR loves getting to the QB even at the cose of giving up big plays yardage by the middle of your defense.. It’s the high risk, high reward chance you take when you play this scheme which is why not many teams/coaches play it around the NFL..

I’m so tired of hearing about Washburn as if he created the defensive line position. Have there ever been a championship team who won with the wide-9?

To tell you the truth it’s the most selfish way of coaching I’ve ever seen.

So what you may get a few more sacks…but at at what expense?

Gaping holes for 300 pound linemen to run through exposing linebackers and safeties.

You can’t win consistently having linemen with primarily one responsibility.

Football is a team sport.

You know what’s more important than sacks?

WINS!!!!!!!

INTERCEPTIONS!!!!!

LINEBACKERS FORCING TURNOVERS!!!!!!

This is blind spot Andy again creating issues for his team.

I’ll go on record right now and say if Lurie would have brought in Harbaugh’s coaching staff that went to the 49ers we’d probably be in the superbowl right now.

Andy Reid is not at talent evaluation or game day coaching.

e was fortunate to have a nucleus in place with sound talent evaluating Modrak when he came to the Eagles which padded his resume for the first half of his tenure.

The Eagles brass should have kept him in that role to maximize his worth instead of giving him power to destroy what was built.

Andy Reid is a fraud.

I’m done.

George, you and many others seem to think that a top defensive coordinator would want to come here, but with a defensive line scheme foisted on him, especially with Washburn’s abrasive personality, few if any would want this job, this was the same predicament last year, do you really think Castillo was Reid’s first choice, Reid had few viable options once he went with Washburn and the wide nine, put on top of that Reid’s lame duck status, being the defensive coordinator for the eagles is not a very attractive opportunity right now

As I keep saying, this will all be worked out in about six weeks. IF six weeks from now D Jack is on another team and we did not replace him with a good veteran WR, Andy’s grave will get deeper. IF, we decide not to address MLB or safety in FA and Andy is going to stand by his SECOND ROUND picks because they are second round picks, the grave gets deeper. (I doubt they stick with Chaney because of his neck issue moreso than wanting someone better. Because I think they really like Chaney and want to prove they were geniuses to find him in the seventh. They are wrong of course but they are smarter than us idiot fans.) IF he insists on sticking with his draft picks at safety. IF he insists on making more half ass LB moves like bringing in a middling veteran and drafting more guys from the third round on. IF he continues to operate his normal way, we will at least have a new era to look forward to because this team is not making the playoffs with that schedule next year unless they make some solid improvements to the defense. That means between Fokou/Jordan, Chaney, Coleman/Jarrett, two of those three positions need solid upgrades. I can live with Rolle and Allen, but the other three positions have to be better or its a wrap. This offense and this OC with this QB cannot carry this team to the playoffs. The D has to be quite a bit better on third down, in the RZ and in the 4th quarter or they are dead.

To George,
Let me put this as easy as I can, and as many times as I have stated since the Season was over and when SPags became available after his firing by the Rams
Spags was not going to come to Philly and work w DL Coach Washburn and the Wide 9 in place.. The only way Spags would consider coming back to Philly is if Washburn would have to be fired/let go..This is why I stated during the whole time Spags was out there that he would not land in Philly.. He is not a Wide 9 guy and he is not a Washburn guy..
Coach AR loves the Wide 9 and Washburn and has been waiting for years for the DL to get a consistent pass rush and he finally feels that he has it with Washburn and the Wide-9..
Everyone keeps trying to mix oil & vinegar here when it’s pretty simple.
#1) Spags was not going to work with Washburn and the Wide 9
#2) Washburn is not going to Coach without using the Wide 9
#3) Coach AR was not going to get rid of Washburn and the Wide 9,
#4) Spags therefore was not interested in coming back to the Eagles…
End of Story..

No nev856; we need a Nick Saban type of attitude of a coach around here who believes in putting “big hogs and bulls” on both the offense and defense side of the ball. A coach who believes in having maulers on the front line and not the so called “high motor” get worn out to quick halfway through the season, and/or hurt before the season starts type of players. We really need some big maulers with a winning attitude who wreck shop like Suh (outside of his on the field squabbles) We’re garbage until we unload Reid and the gang.

My GM plan—Three most important things to work on right now. Sign Shady long term and make him one of the top five highest paid RBs in the league and sign Mathis to insure the continuity of the O line before FA starts so you can concentrate on FA knowing you already took care of your guys. The third thing is focus energy on trying to find a creative way to get some value for Assante. I know he is better than DRC. I know. I know. I know. But DRC is not tradable, he makes less and he is younger. What you hope is that Bowles can motivate him and bring out his talent.
DO NOT franchise D Jack. If he doesn’t want a maximum of five million per year with a decent bonus then he can walk. I like Robert Meachem as a solid low budget replacement. He’s fast and he is better in the RZ with fewer drops. Think Kevin Curtis but faster. At SAM, I like Manny Lawson (just like last year) if the Bengals don’t lock him up first. Second choice would be Rocky McIntosh (also like last year) who would excel in a 4-3. These guys are not sexy moves but a solid upgrade from Fokou/Jordan who are ST lifers and not starting LBs in the NFL. Since I don’t think there is a first round talent at MLB this year and I doubt you will get any of the starting MLBs away from the other 4-3 teams (like Lofton, Tulloch, Hawthorne), I look at Dan Conor or Larry Grant at MLB because these are both guys that will not be retained because they can’t start on their current teams because of immense talent in front of them. They are still both solid upgrades from Jamar Chaney. I DO NOT want DeAndre Levy. He’s an under acheiver. Think Ernie Sims. These are all reasonable low budget moves.
Where you open up the wallet a bit (since you saved some dough on getting rid of Assante’s contract and the more sensible moves) is to go after Michael Griffin or Tyvon Branch at S. Yeah its fine that you like Jarrett. That’s great. But he’s not ready so do the right thing and get someone who is. Coleman is too average and small so that can’t be the fallback plan. The other move I would make is to try to sign Matt Flynn as a back up so you can work with him while Vick is in his last year. I doubt Vick will justify his contract next year by having his best season as a pro. AND THAT is what it would take to justify his contract. So all you guys on his nuts that think he played like a $100M QB better get ready to follow him somewhere else if he doesn’t get serious about improving his game. Because last year, he looked inept too many times.
As far as the draft goes that depends on FA. I would like to get Devon Still at DT. But if they don’t get Branch or Griffin at safety then I think they have to go Mark Barron. I do not want Kuechly. He’s a college player.

It comes down to this, Castillo is still here because nobody else wants to come here. No self respecting, top notch DF Coordinator, is going to come to an organization with a lame duck coach, on a sinking ship. Especially with no assurances of job security. Andy Reid only said at his news conference, that Spags & Castillo would have been good TOGETHER, is because Spags turned his @$$ down, & he doesn’t want his butt buddies feelings to be hurt, & knows he is stuck with him. It’s that simple. He offered the DF Coordinator job to Spags & he turned him down for the perfect situation, in NO. I would have too.

JBird, Why would Matt Flynn be interested in coming to Philly and sit behind Vick..that makes no sense..He wants to be a Starter, and will most likely land in Miami due to relationship with their new HC Joe Philbin and OC Mike Sherman who will install a similar Offense to what he’s already familiar with..I also expect the Redskins to make inquire about FLynn..
I do like your moves with Meachem and LB’s Grant,Lawson,McItnosh or Conner.. Safety, Griffin is hot and cold and I am not familiar with Tyvon Branch and will check him out..I do agree that Coleman/JArrett are back-ups at best and that the position needs upgrading..

Real, nothing is guranteed but death & taxes. But if you don’t think that Spags is a major upgrade over Castillo, then you’re delusional & know nothing about football. When Spags was head coach of the Rams, he had run of the entire team & game plans. He was in charge of the DF. Also the Rams have NO players & brutal, cheap ownership, in a small market. BTW, who is off the bandwagon & who put you in charge of it. No one is immune to criticism, especially when they have legitimately warranted it.

Songs – get this straight – HArbaugh would NOT leave California – his entire coaching career is in California – University of San Diego (not SDSU as som eothers have posted) Raiders, Stanford and now SF – he was NOT leaving California – he has teen school age kids that he did not want to be far from a flight from the bay area to San Diego takes about 2 hours and there are multiple daily flights – his family lives in San Diego – have since he played for the Chargers – Harbuagh was NOT leaving California – he would take 3 pro job – Oakland, San Deigo and San Fran – Standford is just across the bridge – your stament is pure fiction and implies that ‘somehow’ Lurie (as is implied with this article there was some ‘magical’ offer) could have persuaded him to leave his kids for a job – the dude has 5 kids from two marriages –

let it go and stop making shit up –

Modrak was responsible for drafting Todd Pinkston and Freddie Mitchell – maybe if you would stop reading a Mayan Calendar and read a real calendar and had the ability to coorelate draft picks with the guy that was the GM at the time – STOP MAKING SHIT UP – go look at the Eagles Super Bowl roster from 2004 and look at the starters and then figure out how the players got here? STOP MAKING SHIT UP

lame duck is a term used when someone can or will not be reappointed or re-elected – it is a political term used when somone is not in a position to be around longer then a certain period of time – as Reid can be fired, extended, or allowed to leave – the term lame duck does not apply – stop making shit up

Songs – question: Why do you insist on posting such bullshit?
Times Yours

one interesting note about lame ducks – becuase they know they are going to be gone – they have no reason to attempt to curry favor – they can do whatever the hell they like – because – they are lame ducks –

lastly – sorry – maybe I read different ‘stuff’ then you guys do – word I got is that Spags actually chose New Orleans becuase he thinks the Saints have a better shot at the SB then the Eagles because the Saints have Drew Brees – and Spags considers Drew Brees on of the best in the business – – so – what Spags said isn’t really what he meant – he just said it so it could be translated into everything you guys are making up

Paulman…I think Miami FO would rather get Peyton and that will be their first choice. Flynn has to understand that not many people will line up over three games. He could be Bobby Hoying for all anyone knows. And people know these coaches are QB doctors so it could be good for his career and if he gets what we gave Young its about what he would get as a starter. Plus he knows with Vick’s track record he will play a few games and get to showcase some more for his next contract. But the real kicker is that you give him a two year deal with a 50-50 chance he is the starter in 2013. Do you think Vick will play the way he needs to justify his contract? Do you think he will be better than all but Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and Mannings? Because middle of the pack won’t get it. Last year he was better than a dirty Sanchez but not any better than Alex Smith or Joe Flacco who I think are second rate.

That is my understanding too, that Spagnuolo never really wanted any position with the Eagles, as he considered it a backward move. Remember, Reid “offered” him a position on defense. Spag’s priority is to get back to HCoaching and the Saints provide the quickest way back while having a clear shot at DC vacated by Gregg Williams. Nobody was insulted by Reid; Spags had his own goals and Sean Payton runs a top organization there.

To Jbird

New Dolphin Head Coach Joe Philbin has worked with QB M Flynn for 3 years and knows what he’s capable of and what he is not, the Dolphins don’t have the weapons on Offense as the PAckers do but with WR MArshall, Bess, RB Bush, and a pretty godo young OL, they are not completely inept either..
I don’t believe Peyton Manning will ever suit again to play, I expect the COlts to release him soon to avoid paying that ridiculous $28 Million Roster Bonus if he’s on theie active roster come March 8th.. Who know’s, maybe they make a new deal to keep him in Indy but at a much lower Salary,, but personally with a new crew in at Indy with a new GM/Coaching Staff, I think the Colts will just move forward with Top pick QB A Luck and rally around him as the new face of the Franchise..
As far as Vick’s Contract, no I do not believe he will live up to it..He’s being paid as a Top 5 QB and his production is not at the level of a Top 5
Is Vick capable of great games and memorable plays, sure he is, but is he as consistent and efficient as a Brady,Rodgers,Mannings,Brees,Rivers,Stafford, and even Flacco & Ryan.. No He is not, he’s more like a T Jackson, C Newton,M Sanchez which is a QB capable of making great and exciting plays, but also capable of losing ball games by poor ball security and poor decision making..

I think Irsay, by saving the $28 Million Dollars by releasing Manning, will be happy enough.. Remember Irsay paid Manning $25 Million last year to sit on the sidelines all year long, there’s loyalty and good will, but only to a point, Irsay and the new look Colts are moving forward and can better use that $28 Million to rebuild the Franchise for the next 10 years, Manning is not part of the rebuilding project in Indy.. Sad, but that’s the way it is.. .

Real….I have to agree with you. Putting Vick in with T Jackson is a major violation. He is not in the same class as Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Mannings. You have to concede that or I will be convinced that you have a full length naekd poster of Vick in your basement that you spend far too much time looking at. However to put him in with T Jackson and Dirty Sanchez is ridiculous. He has more talent than Ryan and Flacco but I put him in their class because he does not make decisions as well as they do so it evens out. Game managing is a big part of being a QB and that is something that Vick has never been able to master. If he could do that, he is a SB capable QB. But he is there in the second tier with Big Ben, Rivers, Schaub, Romo, Stafford, Cutler, Vick. That would be my Less Magnificent Seven. Then you start getting into young guys who have not quite proven themselves yet and marginal veterans. These would include Ryan and Flacco at the top followed by Newton, Freeman, A Smith, C Palmer, Hassleback and Dalton. These are the borderline eight. Then you have the wannabees. Sanchez, Fitzpatrick, Cassle, Tebow, Kolb, Bradford. Guys who are not likely to be what they were hoped to be.

Uh, I certainly would not put Vick in the same class as Big Ben, Rivers, or Stafford. For starters, Big Ben has two superbowl rings and hardly ever turns the ball over. In terms of Stafford and Rivers, those guys put up monster numbers compared to Vick who only plays about 75% of games every year. Yes, I realize Rivers had a down year last year. The one thing keeping Vick back, as Jbird pointed out, is his decision making. With the amount of turnovers Vick is responsible for, you can’t put him in the same class as a lot of the QBs mentioned.
