Steve Olcott: My Offseason Plans For The Eagles

Last year about this time I drew up my plans for the 2011 off season.  I was correct about the firing of Sean McDermott and that Andy Reid was going to go a bit nutty on FA’s. I did not expect to get 2 prize CB’s but he did bring in Nnamdi Asomugha and a top flight DE, Jason Babin as I figured,  although I was wrong about who that DE would be. With the 2012 off season upon us, I present to you the 2012 Stevo off season plan.

1)    If I’m the Birds I give the Vikes a call about Asante Samuel. My friends, I live out here in Minnesota and can tell you that they have NOTHING at CB. The only guy worthy of a starting role might be going to prison and a zone cornerback like Samuel would be PERFECT for them. Could the Vikes land Samuel and the Eagles 3rd rounder for perhaps their high 2nd round pick? Seems like a win for both teams.

2)      If #1 happens with the Vikes or another team, that would give the Birds 5 picks or more in the first 3 rounds. I would…in this order try and walk away with DT,OLB,OL.  I’m assuming the Birds use the other 2 picks to move up and get their guys at these spots but if they don’t, I would love to see them draft a speedy WR and perhaps a RB.

3)      Tag DeSean Jackson. Is he worth that money? No…. yes…. Well… it’s complicated. For what he does for the entire O, he is clearly worth every penny. He needs to play with heart, he needs to work on catching, all of this is true. But he spreads the field. Just look at the respect he receives every time we play the Cowboys. Underneath is open because of him stretching the field. Draft his replacement? Fine. Sign a vet WR? Fine. But I think we can see from how Steve Smith played this year that a big name will not exactly equal results.

4)      Who wants to be the Eagles Co-#1 quarterback? We cannot expect that Michael Vick lasts the year. I think he will be better but his style of play plus his age point to missing some time AGAIN this year. He is our starter, no doubt. But…. Who can we get to come in and be ready to follow? I would love to see the Eagles land a Jason Campbell or a Tavaris Jackson. Who knows what will happen with them this year, if they find a way to be free. Both could see loads of playing time here.

5)      LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin – Get them deals. Get it done.  One will be looking for a HUGE payday, the other should be cheaper. Get it done.

6)      Stephen Tulloch- I wanted him last year. Honestly, this may be the biggest TO DO on my list. The wide nine needs guys like him. There are others out there, fine. But I want a stud vet MLB. If we had Tulloch, a 1st rd LB and another solid vet, imagine what Casey Matthews, Brian Rolle and Jamar Chaney could add as backups.

7)      Get out of the way Juan. One of the things that worried me about Andy talking was when he talked about how the defensive staff would work together. That’s fine and dandy Andy but who calls the shots? I’m hoping Juan is the mouth piece for the two guys that know what they are doing.

8)      Can’t tackle? Can’t play! It started with Jim Johnson a few seasons back. They wanted more turnovers and so…. Strip strip strip they try. They also usually fail and in doing so, they are left on the ground alone. I watched Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie do what I call the “rollercoaster” (hands in the air in anger after he failed to strip). If this happens… you sit. Don’t care who you are… you sit. The players should fine these guys. It HAS to get better. They seem like Anti men when this happens.

So there you have it. Best part is…. I think they will do just about everyone of these things. I think they are going to land more impact guys that can strengthen this D. I think they will have Vick hit the books and try this thing 1 more time. If it fails…. Big red, Vick, Juan, Djax, and perhaps Howie Roseman will all be hitting the road for 2013 and the next coach will be from the defensive side. Until then…. Let’s go boys… Let’s go Eagles.

Olcott, is that all you have? YOUR OFFSEASON PLAN SUCKS….Put more thought into it before you write something as shortsighted as this #@%* plan.

The Eagles talk a good game. The Giants backed it up with a performance.
Even Shady made a statement, after the season, that the Eagles were better than the Giants. At the Super Bowl one of the announcers said the Giants were a reflection of their coach. I wonder if this is true for the Eagles-out of shape-clueless-know it alls who talk down to their fans. Juan wasn’t even that good of an offensive line coach. Who on the offensive line is a product of Juan’s brilliance. Farve won a Super Bowl the year before Andy was his QB coach. Mouth pieces with no substance. Time for Baby Huey of punt pass and kick fame to move on. Why not evaluate the record of Reid’s coaching tree as to wins and losses, Super Bowls and head coaching job retention. Spagnolo was an Eagles coach before rewid got their.

Stevo – nice try – some good thoughts in there –

but question? Anyone else notice all the ‘Giant Lovers’ talking all this smakc about how ‘tough’ Coughlin is and how ‘badass’ the Giants are that they stepped up and won the SB –

notice these were the exact same douches about two motnhs ago talking about ‘the weak ass’ NFC East – and how poor it was the Eagles couldn’t win the division – yeah… you assholes are funny – two months letter you are jizzing all over Coughlin – he was about to be fired – last two teams he beat to get into playoffs – Cowboys and Jets – think any Giant fans were whining how the games were ‘meaningless’

me personal favorite is I watch Tom Coughlinmis manage the clock repeatedly during the playoffs – burning two timeouts ealr on in the second half – he really didn’t expect Belicheck to let him score? But its OK – the exact same habit that wins is fine – but if it loses it sucks – got it – thanks for confirming once agin you idiots know nothing about football – you just want to bitch and whine that you didn’t win… poor babies..

and lastly for the ‘just make it to the playoff’ whining crowd – um….. anyone notice that the last what 4 out of 5 years a team ‘eeked’ into the playoffs – winning 3 out of those games…

Good job Rev…some good points in there….you know I am with you, and WAS with you on Tulloch last year….but that was last year, huh!

I think we need to make re-signing Mathis a larger priority. Going into next season with an O-line that is settled, healthy and played together under Mudd’s system will make a huge difference compared to previous years.

@navy…yeah, there may be some Giant fan knuckleheads out there today, but truth is thier team won the whole thing, I think they can get a pass on acting like a$$holes for one day. Tomorrow I would start busting on them, but today we should really have nothing to say.

@stevo…talked about Assante a little….I wonder if most teams see the Birds problem and would just wait for him to be released. I thought that being able to trade Kolb last year was a great job by the FO, but when all of the teams know you have a problem, it has to make it tougher to make a deal….plus, his contract may scare off alot of teams. I still would love to see them trade DRC and keep Nhamdi and Assante…I think that is our best d-backfield, with Hanso as nickle.

I am by no means a salary cap person – but other then we ‘think’ his salary is too high to keep – are there salary cap issues involved with keeping him anoher year? Many of the folks let go last year were a result of the no cap year – I know the Eagles cap number was close last year but I thought signing Vick to a long term freed up space – could also possibly cut folks like Jamal Jackson, J PArker, W Justice might free up enough space… anyone good on this stuff (cue Pman)

February 6, 2012 5:28 pm

hello Pman….we are waiting

along with the guys you listed navy, you have to figure Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown and Vince Young would also be without contracts next year….while I don’t know for certain, I don’t believe the birds have cap problems…I know they have total $ values for each position, so with Nhamdi & Assante, I would believe that they have exceeded their internal number…not that they cannot change their own limits

Stevo —The only thing I like out of your plan is:

“Big red, Vick, Juan, Djax, and perhaps Howie Roseman will all be hitting the road for 2013 and the next coach will be from the defensive side”

I like Vick and Djax but am willing to sacrifice them to rid the city of Big Red, Juan, Howie and you can throw in Joe Banner also. —– Jeff Lurie can hang by his feet and try and stretch out his body but at his age he will never be 6 foot —— simarly no matter how hard Joe, Howie and Andy try they will never be able to grow those extra smarts to win a Super Bowl —— their football IQ is not good enough.

1. Trade Samuel. The Lions might be a good fit–they were getting strafed all year, plus they tried trading for him at the deadline last year.

2. Backup QB–I say go after Matt Flynn. Point out that he has the chance to get a lot of playing time this year, and in 2013 when they can dump Vick’s contract, he can actually take over as the new QB.

3. Sign a big time LB and safety in FA and then draft the same positions. I don’t think Tulloch is the answer–he got mahandled during the playoffs by the Saints.

4. Franchise Jackson and then see if you can work out a long term deal before the deadline to do so.

5. Sign Mathis long term, Shady, and Maclin.

6. Their first three draft picks should be LB, LB, and S. If they get another high pick for Samuel, make it an OL.

paulman

I’ll have to do research on Salary Cap issues
But out of the 13-14 Free-Agents that played for the Eagles last season,
I only resign Mathis,Dixon and Landri and maybe Dunlap as back-up OT
and release the others, place a Franchise Tag on D-Jax as not to lose him and then try to sign a 3 year deal or possibly trade him
I do not attempt to resign O Schmitt, VY, Ronnie Brown,Steve Smith, Jamal Jackson, J Parker, or V Abiamri
I do look to trade Samuel, D Tapp, WJ & M Fokou who are all under Contract and package them with existing Draft picks to move up in the Draft
a) CB Samuel + Eagles 5th Rd pick to the Vikings for their 2nd Round Pick
b) DE Tapp + a 6th Rd pick to the Panthers for their 4th Round Pick
c) OT WJ + a 6th Round Pick to the Chargers for their 2013 4th Round Pick
d) LB Fokou to the Pats for a 6th/7th Round Pick in 2013

jake – I realize you only have ten seconds between selling your girl scout cookies and running your lemonade stand – but the topic was Asante Samuel – many are saying no one will trade for him with the Eagles because the Eagles will have to release him – so the question is why do the birds have to release Samuel – many think it is becuase of his high salary – so 1) when you have something meaningfull to contribute – raise your hand and wait for persmission to type and 2) really – get a life – if the results of a game are an infliction of misery – you really have a sad, sad life – I get the distinct feeling many people that post on this site are just basically miserable people with sad pathetic lives that hope they will have some joy – why they are so hyper-invested/sensitive to Eagles results – try and be better then that Jakey boy – its just a game… and its supposed to be fun… but then again – I may have a different perspective

paulman
paulman
February 6, 2012 8:04 pm

I extend McCoy’s immediately and possibly Maclin’s deal depending where the D-Jax Negoitiations go..
I go out and Sign the following Free-Agents
FB LeRon McLain, WR Robert Meachem (regardless of D-Jax’s situation)
MLB Manny Lawson, Larry Grant or D’Qwell Jackson and OLB Rocky McIntosh for Back-UP QB, check out Chad Henne,Jason Campbell or even a guy like Dennis DIxon from the Steelers
I would not count on players like Mike Patterson,Colt Anderson who are both coming off major surgeries and who kows if they will be ready come camp time.. or maybe stash them on PUP list as not to count against Active Roster

I don’t believe the Eagles want to pay Samuel $9.5 Million Salary for the 2012 Season and he’s due $10 Million in 2013.. Samuel is not in that Elite Class of CB’s any longer, he’s lost a little of that explosive break on the rball and now has to play even further of opposing WR’s.. He will be 31 and we all know he’s not much of a Tackler.. With Asmo/DCR, the Eagles can go to a Press-Man Coverage Scheme which does not suit Samuels Style of play.. This will probably be the last Time the Eagles can get a decent Value for him and could bette rutilize the salary Savings for other players in other positions of need..

Warren Sapp believes the eagles are a little light in the shorts on the D-line and last week Hollis Thomas gave the current LBs on the roster a pass and blamed the D-line for allowing 300 lbers to sit on them off the snap —- maybe D- line

I hate the Eagles secondary — don’t believe Assante will back — know Nate Allen and DRC are too weak to play starter ball and want CB Dre Kirkpatrick and SS Mark Barron from Alabama and am willing to use all their draft picks to move up to get them both —–

Green – love those thin mints – put um in the freezer… the Somoans are…

so back to Asante – the issue becomes that he is scheduled to make too much in salary.. – so the Eagles could trade him and a new team would have to work out a new salary with him.. its not that he is due some 8 mill roster bonus or a salary cap issue – just a feeling the eagles don’t want to pay him.

Sapp has a decent point – get Dixon back we gain some wt int he dl

If you break the bank and sign MArio Willams, then he’s your DE (in the Eagles Scheme) which means you need to move T Cole and or J Babin..
I would love the Eagles to get DE Mario Williams, but I don’t see where he is a fit on this team This Defense needs to built up the middle with DT’s, LB’s and a kick ass SS.. Having Williams would be great as would Dree Brees, and all stud players, but I am trying to keep the Free-Agents somewhat realistic and after the 50/50 Success the EAgles had with all these big name Free-Agwents form last Off-Season, I do not see them going out and making wholesale changes..

I don’t think the birds need to let asam walk if they can’t find their trade partner and I think they will sell it that way but in the end I think he gets moved.

As far as the cap goes. Honestly guys- we have LOADS of money. LOTS of bloated contracts coming off the books.

I know my “plan” is simple- nothing real sexy but we don’t need an overhaul- just a LB core.

To get Mario Williams it wont require the birds to overhaul anything. Look at what the giants have, Tuck, Osi,Pierre-PAul and a guy they moved to LB but they still use him as a rusher but his name escapes me so they have 4 pure pass rushers that can do serious damage.. so there is no limit to the amount of rushers you have.. they can put mario at DT and have him rush from there similar to what the giants do with Tuck… i did a little research and read that free agents similar to last year wong get the huge contracts so there will again be a slew of guys on the open market available to be nabbed.. will the eagles pull the trigger and try and sign Mario Williams? I hope so

Three Stooges, Baby Huey and Speedy Gonzales. A clueless bunch if ever I’ve
seen one. There is nothing to discuss regarding the Eagles. They are the all hype team. 51 years is way too long for anyone to wait and be loyal to a group of assholes that could care less about anything but their wallets. Sheila and Naveena are pretending to not care but they are not fooling anyone as their previous posts have exposed their lies.

The Philadelphia Eagles are successful and that does not always translate into Championships. NFL is a corporate business.

based on these facts the Eagles need to sign Andy to another 10 year deal. With Andy we’re good enough to have “a chance” every year …and the formula they have articulated thoroughly for years is that the team with a chance and a little luck wins in the end.

I’m on board.

10 more years of Andy with the 3 of those years sacrificed to help his buddy Juan learn the defensive coordinator position.

that’s how championship teams are built.

followed by the sad sack songs – boy that ‘gold standard’ Belicheck got his ass kicked by a 9-7 team in the big game – you see that piss poor challenge flag – how about that horrid safety – Hell – the Eagles kicked the shit out of the Giants – what – i think Juan held them to.. wait 10 points and 29 yards rushing and under 300 total O with freakin VINCE YOUNG as the QB in NY – Belicheat got his ass kicked – what was it you were saying a while back – the weak NFC east (that the Eagles happened to be 5-1 against).. yeah – that ‘weak’ NFC east – how could any team from the ‘weak’ NFC east succed –

thanks for confirming that the only ‘knowledge’ you posses is to bitch about the eagles – cause – just about everything you say is wrong – ever notice since Belicheat got caught he can’t wint he big one??????

and of course – how are championship teams built – cause like 4 of the last 5 years the team with the worst record entering the playoffs made the SB and 3 of the 5 they won the game – and each of the teams was much different then the others – so thanks yet again for throwing aother dumb ass cliche (really – was this years Ginats like past years Packers, like the year before Saints????? – not even close) but keep bitching – its the only talent you have – so 3 of the last 5 were built EXACTLY with the formula you are mocking.. idiot

you guys are completely overrating D’Qwell Jackson. We don’t need more mediocrity and getting rid of DeSean is asinine. The money You want to put into Lofton, I’d rather use to try to sign Mario Williams. There are better, and cheaper options. Oh yeah, and Nick Foles, I don’t waste my time, and Dwayne Bowe, is not better than DeSean, CAN’T TOUCH DESEAN!!! So why bother? I know he is a big body, but you gotta give me more than that, and don’t bring me stats, because they wouldn’t matter when you have him in the eagles offensive system. He was basically Kansas City’s only option at WR, HE WOULD HAVE TO SHARE THE BALL HERE. So he wouldn’t bring the same production here; Maclin is as good as he is. You guys get overly fascinated with Big names, but dont see it, when they really don’t bring anything we don’t already have here. I know, he is a big body; I agree, but that’s it. I don’t think a double hernia is all that serious to come back from and I did tell him to stay away from Roseann Barr

BigE – and I am guessing you could never even possibly represent the Armed Forces – what was it – low IQ, no HS diploma – you fat? drug charges or just didn’t have the balls – either way – another sad attempt by those that never did, could or would – talk about needing to take a look at yourself – next you are going to fill me in on some relative who did have the balls – but of course not you – course – you could never fill me in on any athletic accomplishments, coaching accomplishments, cause other then lame attempts to belittle my ‘so called’ accomplishments – you got what – nothing? crickets – yep – thought so – try not to be so jealous – its not pretty

hey, between your bitcheness, whining and jealosy – are you a women? Have I been approaching this from the wrong angle – or are you just incredibly hormonal?

but here is an intelligence question for you – what is the difference between a so called accomplishment and an accomplishment – could it be the petty jealous douche on the other end of the blog – and who is the petty excuse of a man – you tell me you all american basketball player or a lawyer, I will congratualte you I say a played division one football – and that’s bragging – who has the self worth issues my lady friend – I think that would be you – but now that I realized I approached you from the non-feminine direction – let me try again – I am sorry I called you a whining pussy – I only did it because – well – cause your post makes you sound like a whiney pussy – you want me to sugar coat it for you so as to not hurt your lil feelins princess…

lil big e .. um… we are all sooo sorry you have had to suffer alone in your misery… yu poor poor baby… poor lil — baby .. maybe one day , just for you… things will get better – and the eagles will win a super bowl and you can have a day to escape your miserable stinking life (something tells me that ghetto dweller comment was a little slip there girlfriend)

there – that make your little boo boo better or you need a band aid?

Shiela you have come to conclusions about me without knowing me at all as has you idol Naveen. I think arrogant is the wrong term here. When your boy Navy comes to conclusions about people’s lives that he knows nothing about I don’t see you calling him on it. I say that your continued references to psycholocical terms and evaluations makes you a want to be. If we don’t know each other why should we worry about credibility. It can be facked on a website.

Navy you took a long time to get back. Who helped you gather your thoughts. You as you like to state are telling me everything that I said about you and you are wrong on all accounts. I sense that you, even with your resume, are still a jerk maybe because of too much corperal punishment about the head and shoulders. Those that do don’t talk they do but somehow you seem to need reinforcement by reading your own posts.

Navy, your like the lunatic that one might meet waiting for a train plane or bus
and they tell you, out of the clear blue, their whole life story and how amazing they are. And the truth is no one gives a damn and can’t wait till they can escape the jabbering idiot.
