Notes From Phillies’ 5-6 Loss To Houston

The Phillies fell to Houston Astros 5-6 in extra innings on Tuesday. Philadelphia scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning, but the bullpen was unable to hold to lead, letting up three runs in the bottom half of the extra frame.

  • Cole Hamels threw five innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out four, and didn’t walk a batter. His ERA for the spring stands at an impressive 1.69.
  • John Mayberry continues to struggle heavily at the plate. He went 0-3, and is now batting just .192.
  • Domonic Brown went 2-5, and hit a solo homerun in the 10th inning. That was the good news.
  • The bad news was that Brown committed another error in the field, missing a throw to the cutoff man in the seventh inning.
  • Brown also misplayed a fly ball in the eighth inning, allowing Carlos Lee to pick up an easy double.
  • It was a rough day for a handful of relievers that were already struggling to impress the coaching staff. Veteran Brian Sanches, and lefthanders Raul Valdes and Jeremy Horst combined to give up five runs in just 3.1 innings of work. Each of the three pitchers was credited with a blown save.
  • I’ve had nothing but good things to report on Freddy Galvis so far, and this game was no different. The infielder started another game at second base, and went 2-3 with an RBI.
  • Hunter Pence went 1-3 with a double.
  • Horst recorded just one out before giving up three runs on two hits in the bottom of the 10th inning. With this performance, he’s taken away any outside chance he had of becoming the team’s second lefthanded reliever.
