Phils Try To Address Utility Player Problem

Ruben Amaro Jr signed two utility infielders to minor league deals Wednesday morning, but has really left a lot to be desired in regard to finally that hole on his professional club. The two long shots to make the team haven’t turned any heads their entire careers and I don’t see them ever setting foot in Citizen’s Bank Park, unless it’s to watch a game from the seats.

Chin-lung hu was released by the Cleveland Indians and immediately snagged up by the Phillies. Why the Phillies picked up this five-year backup, to fill the void left behind by Michael Martinez’s injury and the trade of Wilson Valdez is beyond me. Sure neither Martinez nor Valdez turned many heads, but Hu batted under .100 last season. He played average in the field for the Mets, but posted a -40 defensive runs saved per year average and free runs is something the Phils can’t afford to give away like bubble gum.

Joe Thurston has been around the game for a while, playing in four games last year with the Marlins. His most productive year was in 2009 when he batted .224 while playing in 124 games for the Cardinals (the only time in his career he played in over 20 games). He was a Phillie in 2006 and isn’t the kind of player who is going to stir the pot in the field or the batter’s box.

Neither of these signings will make the Phillies starting roster which still leaves a huge hole for a utility infielder. The Phillies were late in dealing for the Royals’ Chris Getz after expressing interest early last week. The 28-year-old is a career .254 hitter and has played the middle and corner infield positions. He has made 16 career errors and will be returning to Kansas City as their starting second baseman after a solid spring.

With Utley sidelined for at least a month to start the year, the highly touted Freddy Galvis will get his first chance in the pros. He is been consistently working his way through Philadelphia’s farm system and will be Rollins’ replacement when his contract expires in 2014. Upon Utley’s return the Venezuelan shortstop will move to either AAA or into the team’s utility role. Sending the 22-year-old to Lehigh Valley is the best option because h will start every day until September when he is inevitably brought back to the show.

With Ty Wigginton holding down third base, the Phillies should still be inquiring teams about a middle infielder who would cost them no more than Howie Kendrick or Joe Blanton.

Ramiro Pena of the New York Yankees could be a quick solution to this hole. The Yankees just lost Joba Chamberline and still have an aged Andy Pettite at the backend of their rotation, which makes one issue clear the Bombers need pitching.  The Mexican utility man exploded onto the scene coming off the Yankees bench batting .287 in 2009. His numbers have dwindled sense but he still provides to be a reliable fielder  with a career fielding percentage of .948. He isn’t going to be a deciding factor in many games, more of a defensive replacement who can play nearly every position well, when guys need rests.

If the Phillies aren’t able to deal for Pena don’t expect their search for a utility man to stop. Depth is one of the most important things in baseball and for the Phils to compete in a tough NL East they need to address this issue before Utley returns from injury.

Phils dropping fast and probably a 3rd Place Finish in the NL EAst behind the Nats & braves.. No Playoffs for 2012 as Manuel gets relieved of Duty and the promote Ryne Sanberg to take over..
Gone after the 2012 will be Thome, Utley, Polanco,Contreras, Blanton,Pierre,Posednik..

Yeah really – Phils dropping fast…. heck, they’ve fallen all the way from a record of 0-0 to 0-0….. I don’t know how they’ll ever recover from that. Paul, you proved to have 0 credibility with baseball last year. And yet, you’re outdoing yourself with asinine comments again this year….pshh..

Phillies losses. It really doesnt matter. This orgaization has established itself as a powerhouse. It has established a payroll only second to the Yanks. So we will always spend money on great players. Utley goes he will be replaced. Howard goes he will be replaced with best 1st baseman on market. Hamels leaves we will spend on a suitable replacement. Doesnt anyone understand we are the Yanks of the NL. We may not win it all every year but we will always have superstars and spend money to fill the stands. Its a wonderful situation!

It should be noted you picked the Braves 3 years in a row.How the heck are these otehr team better then us right now? What have they proven that we havent?Zero.

Ryne Sanberg…you bag of baseballs…stop.

Noway they relieve Uncle Chuck…hes earned two horrible years for this org..And in baseball more then any other sport teams “play ” for there manager. And that swhat the Phills do.

Doc,Cliff,Cole,Vanilmal and FatJoe….deal with em…and i actually think this line-up will step up. Jimmie had a nice p-off. Pence is an AllStar…Chooch is Chooch.Polly should contribute like always with much needed rest days. Mayberry is not a slouch..hes a major league hitter. Thome will contribute.Oh…lets not forget the Flyin Hawaiin.

So tell me…why are we in such trouble…yes we’re missing the big guy…oh..how the heck will they get 11 bombms and 44 ribs from soemone this year to replace Chaser. And he’ll be back.

Let’s wait and see…maybe thats what this team needs …a lil adversity and doubt by media nerds and gcobb storytellers.

Braves dont impress me…the Nats are the NATS!!!!Marlins….come get some….noones afraid of your tropical ballpark that will be empty by June when everyone is home watching the Heat.

Go phills.

Utley and Polanco have trended downward the last 3 Season.. not a blip, these players are old, broken down and are 250.-260 slp hitters at best (at lease Polanco still has a good glove)
Howard out to late June/probably All-Star Break… Maybertry has stuggled most of Spring, No legitmate every LF on the Club, maybe a platoon of 40 year olds of Pierre and Posednik will have to do since 5 Start Prospect Domonic Brown ccannot play in the field or hit for average.. Catcher Ruiz Gets big hits burt is another year older with no quality back-up (Brian Schenider again)
Victorino & Pence will be mst consistent players but not the type to carry a club.. I expect a decent year from Rollins, ahgain nothing spectaculra but a .260-.270 HItter
Thome as a Pinch-Hitter will get 4-5 At- Bats a week and maybe 1-2 Starts a week at 1B for a total of 10-12 At-Bats a week at most.. not going to work for a palyers who is used to getting 20-25 At-Bats a week as a DH, cannot play the field and would be a Defensively liabilty and have to come out in the late innings which is when you could his bat.. was a stupid
acquistition..

Phillies will be fine. They are older and injured at key positions but their experience and pitching should be able to win 90-95 games. Enough to win the division.

I keep hoping these adversities will end up benefiting the Phillies. We were the favorites the past few years and look what that got us. Early exits from the playoffs. Maybe they will have to dig deep this year to find the heart that got them to two World Series in a row.

Too many everyday players have become too comfortable in my opinion and know they are playing everyday whether they produce or not…

paulman, you sing the same damn tune every year and are wrong, you predicted the phils would win 92 games last year beind the braves, you are now wrong on the eagles, how much more wrong could you have been on desean jackson, you need some new material paulman, its getting old, we know what you will say before you say it,then you remind us what you said, until you are wrong, then you give feint praise for the philly sports teams, then you start the process over again, holy hell

I was correct though, over the last 2 years, in predicting the Phils would lose in the 1st Round of the Playoffs regardless of how many Wins they end-up with or whether they are a Divsional Winner or as a WIld-Card.. .. This Season I am predicting they will not even make the Playoffs as how their Roster stands as of today..

jakedog – don’t forget Bunkley being a great fit for Washburn, and the Eagles trading away patterson right when Washburn got here. That’s what the pman said. You’re right on here Jakedog.

Paul – You love to play the tough guy with your expectations. “Too many everyday players have become too comfortable in my opinion and know they are playing everyday whether they produce or not…” – I got a word for that Paul – BASEBALL. That’s the sport. It’s a game of averages – you don’t demote baseball players because of a lack of production.

Pick the Braves again dude.

Has the NL got tougher? yes.

What line-up looks at the Phills as a team on the decline?Roy…Cliff …Cole….im sure there gonna be thinking 6 runs nightly.

Utley gave us nothing…therefore what are we missing…his presences…get outta here.Howard will be back when s hes 100%.

I dont understand the negativity around the ballclub. Maybe cause i just wait for things to go bad before i have concerns. negativity is for losers…its loser talk.

Until the Marlins prove something and Heyward proves hes not a bust…its the Phills division.

Docs coming North and he wants answers.

Washburn/Eagles never gave a chance to Bunkley, who I still think would have been better than Patterson in Washburn’s Wide 9 Scheme but we’ll never found out now. Watch Bunkley have success under Spags in New Orleans next Season
Paulman’s Predictions for NL East Baseball for 2012 Season

NL East
1) Nationals 91-71 (Division WInner)
2) Braves 89-73 (1 Wild-Card)
3) Phils 87-75
4) Marlins 84-78
5) Mets 66-96

Come on Paul, I’m not even that down on the Phils. They still win 90+ & win the division. The Nats are big mouth FRAUDS, & the Braves are in just as bad of shape as we are. Their pitching has questions, Hudson, Jurrgens are hurt & rehabbing, Freeman might be done with a dislocated knee, their Captain, as they call him, Chipper Jones is done, & their prized stud reliever prospect, who they were expecting a lot from, is done for the year with Tommy John surgery. We have many issues, but we still have a stud staff, & a full year with Pence. I do still think that they need to get another good infielder, maybe Michael Young, David Wright, IDK, but I think we still win the division with 94 wins. BUT WE CAN’T LOSE ANYBODY ELSE, OR WE ARE DONE!

Wonderful situation to be able to spend the most money in the NL. We will always have superstar blue chip players every year. So we will always field a good team. The dark years are long behind us. Will we have injuries? Sure. Will we win it all every year? Of course not. But its a simple formula. Blue chip players=sellouts=more blue chip players. Future is bright. Yankees of the NL! Gotta love it!

For years we were bitching if we were gonna be competitive.lol Now all we wonder about is if we will win 100 games and go to the World Series. Only a handful of teams even have a chance to be competitive and have hope. We are on the A list every year. Just imagine if the Sixers had that luxury! We are the Miami Heat, Spurs, Lakers, Bulls of baseball. What a wonderful feeling!

I differ about the $$$$ being wisley spent Dag…
Polanco, Utley,Blanton,Papelbon are all overpaid as is Howard, leaving the Phils will little $$ to lock up Hamels or go out and get a everyday productive 3B and LF.. and what they have left is Bench Players like Thome, Wigginton,Nix,Pierre,Scheider & Posednik who are all past their primes that now will have to be counted on due to all the injuries …
Where is all the young talent from the Farm System..

In case anyone was wondering what that loup “Gasp” sound was late night over Citizens Bank Park, It was GM Amaro and Phillie Ownership once they found out that the SF Giants have signed RHP Matt Cain to a 6 year $127.5 Million Deal (Averaging $21 Million per Season) which has just upped Hamels Value by quite a bit… Phils should have taken care of this earlier in the off-season and will now most likley have to offer in $20-$22 Million per Season Range or risk Hamles leaving to go back out West to the Dodgers (Which I think he will do anyways)
Extending Hamels to a 1 Year Deal for 2012 did Hamels and the Team no favors in my opinion and will most likley become a distraction as the Season goes along as far as the continual questions of are both sides talking, are you close to signing a long-term deal, etc, etc… Poor Roster management
