Recapping The Final Three Rounds Of The Eagles’ Draft

On the third and final day of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Eagles spent the majority of the day adding some depth to the offensive side of the ball.

With the 153rd pick in the NFL Draft, the Eagles chose to pick up some depth for their offensive line, drafting Purdue offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.

Kelly has a 6-8, 321 lb frame, and was a starter for three seasons. He’s a tall, lean, athletic offensive tackle, and was an attractive late round option for offensive line coach Howard Mudd. The fifth round pick isn’t a lock to make the roster, and could be a practice squad candidate, but it will be interesting to see what Mudd can do with this raw prospect.

In the sixth round, the Eagles first took wide receiver Marvin McNutt. McNutt is a physical receiver, and stands at 6-3, 216 lbs. He’s a good possession receiver, but there are questions about his consistency and effort. He’ll have an opportunity to push Chad Hall and Riley Cooper for a roster spot.

Six picks later, the Eagles grabbed another offensive lineman, Brandon Washington. Washington is a 6-3, 320 lb guard from the University of Miami. He’s very athletic for his size, and some believe he has the talent to eventually develop into a starter. He has the talent for Howard Mudd to work with.

With their final pick in the seventh round (the pick acquired from Atlanta in the Asante Samuel salary dump trade), the Eagles took running back Bryce Brown from Kansas State. Brown has good size for an NFL running back at 6-3, 220 lbs. He has speed, strength, and talent, but his draft stock was greatly impacted because of his lack of production in college. His greatest accomplishment was running for over 400 yards in his freshman year at Tennessee, but since then has failed to crack the starting lineup. He transferred to Kansas State last year, but left the team after learning he would not start. The Eagles need depth behind LeSean McCoy, and the chance will be there for the young running back to earn a roster spot.

150 Comments for “Recapping The Final Three Rounds Of The Eagles’ Draft”

  1. HE IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH AT THE POINT OF ATTACK, AND CANT COVER MY DEAD GREAT GRANDMOTHER IN CEMENT SHOES…….HE IS A BUM

  2. Gm, true or false, the kid was a rookie last year. True or false, nfl players, from the best to worst, tend to have a shot to improve between season one and two, add weight and strength, and speed up their game. True or false, last year the d was a debachle, with no quality vet leadership at lb, and that’s different this year. True or false, the dl in front of mathews and the lbs next to him have improved significantly.

The above questions have very clear answers. All of them lead to your point about Mathews being dumb.

  3. The great difference between all of the moves the FO made last year and the moves and draft picks this year is that we have established coaches in Mudd and Washburn getting a chance to work with the players during mini-camps and an entire training camp…..AR followed up on his earlier coments and made the Birds defense stronger up the middle. I believe that they may still sign a FA safety before the start of camps.

With the personel improvement on defense, I believe that the keys to our season will rest with keeping Vick healthy and cutting down on the high number of turnovers we saw last year. As long as Bell is healthy, and can come up to speed with Mudd’s system, I believe that stability on the OL will put us in a better situation compared to the start of last season.

I am ready for the season to start…..GO BIRDS!!

  4. YES GREENFAN- thats exactly what i was thinking.
Before the draft i said “Let washburn make the picks” and they did. I wonder how much control he had In TEN…. i love that he gets first say here in Philly.

  5. Matthews improved as the Season went on and was put in a no-win situation at the start of last Season.. I think he played ok down the stretch and will be a back-up and Special Teams player like I thought he would be when he was Drafted.. He’s not a Starter or a Savior for the Defense by any means and I never expected him to be, but he will make the Eagles Roster and have a a decent career…

  6. Im with you Pman- the prob with Casey last year was that they tried to make it out like he was an answer for this D. You DONT do put a MLB rookie in as a starter and expect him to command the huddle and bark out the play calls. That move is 100% on Andy/Juan and the hate should not be on Casey. You now how Andy always says “i got to put my players in a better position”?- this is what he’s talking about.

  7. Casey Mathews should absolutely be on this team.

One thing you look for in a rookie is improvement, and Mathews certainly showed that last season in the second half. I like what I see from him on passing downs…..but of course, need to see more production out of him on running downs.

  8. I believe he competes with Chaney for the SAM spot once Camps gets full bore.. I belive Kendricks will play WILL, Ryans will play MIKE/MLB and the Chaney and MAtthews fight it out for SAM, I also believe that even if Chaney wins the Battle for Starter spot at SAM, that Matthews will replace him on Obvious Passing situations and will see as many snaps as Chaney..
(I still think many here have overrated Chaney play and when talking about smarts for the game, I believe it’s a major reason why Matthews was named the Starter at MLB last year over Chaney to begin with which ended up being a poor decision by Castillo/Reid)

  9. Is it correct to say that after drafting Kevin Kolb in the 2nd round – and then trading him, for that trade the Eagles got DCR plus draft picks that were used to select Curry and Boykin? Is that accurate?

  10. eagles0superbowls

Navy yes –the spoils from the Kolb trade look good today don’t they – the McNabb trade loot doesn’t however ( Nate Allen & Casey Matthews is this correct)

  11. not sure – I wasn’t sure if the fourth rounder became what moved us up to get Cox – or if they were just using the 4rth rounder to get Boykin – but either way – regardless of who/how/what Kolb did or does the rest of his career – right now that looks like one hell of a draft and trade

As for McNabb – this will be the key year to see – I think Matthews becomes the 4rthLB, the nickel and dime LB and a special teams guru – he will contribute and become ‘Ike Reese’ like in a few years

  12. I like it navy. i think mathews could very well be that guy.

  13. Matthews is ass and so is Graham. Nate Allen & Riley Cooper.

Matthews is a special teamer at best…We’ve finally replaced Graham and Cooper with this draft but we will not be complete until that Safety position is secure.

  14. bla bla bla songs. Birds had a good draft- u can stop the hate for now. You know noting about mathews- none of us do. you loved Asam- the guy who cant tackle or hit? makes no sense.

  15. Stevo..Asam 25 interceptions in 4 years….only loser Eagles fans except bonehead moves then makes excuses…You don’t trade a perennial pro bowler for a 7th round pick that can help a team in your conference get over the playoff hump.

So come on man….DRC don’t tackle either and is not a better cover corner than Asante.

You don’t improve a position by downgrading it.

  16. Songs only likes the Eagles players that are dark-skinned. He doesn’t like the white boys or the mochas.

  17. songs- Bubble Screen game. Remember that one? I do. it was as bad a game ive ever seen for a CB. It was bad a game for a cb as the giants game was for our OT Justice a few years back. Dont get me wrong- i was an asam fan but this was the right move. Would you rather have Asam then have McCoy locked up? Thats what we are talking about here.

So i want to get this str8 songs- you are ok with a player that is soft as long as he gets int’s? Thats good to know for the future.

  18. and songs- for the record- i didnt want Graham either but im going to hope for the best. i like what i had seen from him and allen their rookie years.

  19. and as far as downgrading the CB position. Do you understand that they dont need the soft zone corners for this D? Thats not the style they want to play. They are trying to get back to the kind of football that YOU AND I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING ABOUT FOR YEARS!!!!! Im not saying DRC is the answer for what they are trying to do but i CAN tell you that Asam was NOT the answer for this. They are moving nnamdi to asam’s spot. you remember Nnamdi- the GUY YOU AND I BEGGED FOR!!!!

  20. Stevo…you’re not getting it.

My problem is we’re downgrading a position with a lesser talent.

Asante Samuel is a actual better tackler than DRC and his cover skills are better…that’s the point.

What good is a press corner if QB’s can complete 68% of their passes against him?

That’s the point…and this have noting to do with McCoy…The Eagles could have Asante and still lock McCoy up ..so stop it already.

    Another thing.

I have nothing against Graham…my problem is that everyone knew we needed Earl Thomas except the Eagles evaluators with Reid at the Helm.

    That’s the problem.

Yes, this draft is an improvement from what we’re use to …but it’s not over.

Our Safeties were horrible last season and to think they’re more than what we’ve seen is wishful thinking at best.

With the Corner position downgraded along with a weak safety crop teams will continue to get the ball out quick only to exploit the intermediate void between linebackers and safeties…and bubble screens are still an option with DRC on the left.

We need better personnel at Safety to finally get this secondary in position for contention…and that’s real.

  21. Oh bullshit Songs – just pure fucking bullshit -

The Eagles want CBs that DENY the QB the chance to throw the ball and let the DL get to the QB – Asante wants to hang off and biat the QB – he has and always will be a guy that jumps routes… he DID NOT FIT IN THE NEW SYSTEM period – stop your fucking bitching and whining he is gone

No one – not a single solitary person has said anything about taking an individual player in an individual position – everyone is talking about the team -

you know – the sum of the whole is greater then the parts, everyone working together will get better results then everyone working alone..

everyone understands that Asante may in fact in individual drill be better -

    but no one cares -

becuase the eagles are going to a type of D where they want the CBs IN THE WRs FACE so the QBs have to hold the ball so the DL can get after him..

Just one last wasted point because you are too stupid to get this –

por football outsider said this :

this is the guy the Eagles are trying to trade because they want to be able to move Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie outside and play more man coverage. Samuel is still really good and would be a huge addition to any team that plays primarily zone coverage.

and oh by the way – opposong QBs targetted Asante more then any other CB on the eagles last year –

Go look at Asmo’s numbers in Oakland – notice he did not have a whol elot of picks as a matter of fact – he had 2 picks in three years when he was considered the baddest CB in the NFL – his job was to TAKE AWAY THE RCVR -

Asantes job is to bait the QB – you can’t have one guy playing soft zone and another in press – if you do – you end up with – well – the eagles secondary in 2011

  22. Navy?

If that’s the case ..why did the Eagles make Asante Samuel the highest paid corner when he was signed with us?……

If he’s just a one trick pony?

  23. eagles0superbowls

Songs & Navy — you’re both sort of correct, DRC would never beat Asante out in training camp (ever) so to see if his departure helps Asomugha & the rest of the secondary with DRC playing we will find out

  24. Songs – you view things in a vacum. You view things in very simple terms. Football is a 22 person at a time moving chess match (see, 99% of other fans take this knowledge for granted, you seem to lack it).

You can’t just say who’s better Asante or DRC – because they play in a VERY different style. And you can’t use DRC’s stats on the Cardinals two years ago to project how he”ll play on this Eagles D this year.

You also can’t say the Safties – the SAME safties – won’t be much better this year when they’ll have a vastly improved front 7 in front of them, no Asante gambling and leaving them in positions they shouldn’t have been put in, more health(Allen), more experience (Allen and Coleman), a new secondary coach (Bowles), a new slot CB (Boykin), and WAY better MLB QBing the defense. AND it’s not Juan’s first year.

See, you take an issue – then you ignore all the factors that influence it – and THEN you make your opinion. But fact is, real life operates in context – ESPECIALLY FOOTBALL – context is HUGE. But you disregard context on a regular basis.

Example? “Burfict is an amazing tackler at times with great passion and violence”…. that’s awesome. The context? He SUCKS AT PLAYING LB, and had major character, physical conditioning, combine performance, and interviewing skills problems.

  25. Songs – the price of Samuel’s contract was not due to how good of a player he is – it was what the market indicated and what he agreed to. Again – you oversimplified things. Who makes more money right now – Trent Richardson or Shady McCoy? Once his deal is worked out shortly, the answer will be Trent Richardson. Who’s the better player? Get it now?

  26. eagles0superbowls – “DRC would never beat Asante out in training camp (ever)”

INCORRECT – 100% incorrect. —– If the team for that training camp scenario you’re talking about ran man coverage – like Pittsburgh for example, DRC would beat out Asante HANDS DOWN.

    SYSTEM MATTERS

The Steelers would never sign Asante. Plain and simple. Neither would the Cardinals or any other team that doesn’t let their CBs ad lib zone all the time.

  27. Schill?

When have the addition by subtraction approach worked Andy Reid’s teams?

They have failed 100% of the time.

    So, come on man.

DRC is no where near the talent of Asante Samuel…if he had that type of talent…he would be screaming for a raise…he’s every bit of his cheap price tag.

When he gets toasted this year….we’ll be on here blasting the FO for letting Asante go for nothing.

And Nate Allen is ass..another thing

How can you being an Eagles fan claim a linebacker anywhere is not good with the players the Eagles have drafted at the position the last few years?

If Burfict is bad….then what the hell was Clay Matthews last year?

How many missed tackles “Clay shoes” Matthews had last year?

So, get outta here…Burfict can do no worse than what we’re use to here in Philadelphia

  28. Songs “When have the addition by subtraction approach worked Andy Reid’s teams?” – stupid question.

This is a unique situation that Andy Reid’s teams have never been in “elite intercepting CB who plays off the man and doesn’t tackle, gambles to get picks at the cost of leaving WRs wide open even when his specific responsibility on the play was otherwise AND is very expensive and un willing/unable to play slot or adjust his style. Also have young Man/press CB who’s much taller, less of a hands guy, much faster, better for the new system. AND a new system.

“They have failed 100% of the time.” – what on earth is “THEY”?

Be specific. You’re talking crazy here. This is a very UNIQUE addition by subtraction situation. There haven’t been “theys”. So please explain “they”.

Songs, the CB position is played on the football field. Not by some computer program that calculates “talent” and says “this one has more”.

Lady Gaga has talent. Joselio Hanson doesn’t have much talent. Who’s a better NFL CB?

  29. eagles0superbowls

@Schiller– I’m not saying Asante is without faults but for you to assume DRC is the answer is presumptuous considering his game has been non successful for 2 full seasons now –I haven’t seen a good play by DRC yet to feel good about him but I’ve seen DRC make many bad plays in Eagle green to be concerned

  30. For each of his 23 interceptions as an Eagle, Samuel missed five tackles.
For every pick he turned into six, he gave up 10 touchdowns
Asante Samuel was a fraud, wrapped in a mirage, inside an illusion.

He had the hands of a receiver and the tackling skills of a quarterback.

Samuel has made a career out of anticipation. Not winning battles for balls; not covering tightly and physically, risking a dislocated finger or a sprained knee.

He is the master of the deflected interception; the king of right place, right time. He jumps routes like a kid jumps rope.

The two Eagles cornerbacks who remain, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha, can now play real NFL defense – the kind where they wrestle with a receiver at the line of scrimmage, run with him step-for-step and dare the quarterback to throw at them.

    Troy Vincent defense.

    Eric Allen defense.

The sort of defense that enables the wide-nine philosophy, giving time for defensive ends to crash the pocket; not the sort of defense that creates a bubble just past the line of scrimmage where QBs can dump passes before the pass rush gets close.
The wide-nine simply cannot work with the Charmin technique

  31. My take on DRC is this, I can’t say that anyone has a true feel on him for he didn’t play that much and when he did, it was not his natuaral Outside CB position.. What I do know is that CB Samuel has been the part of the Eagles Secondary the last4 Seasons and that the Eagles Secondary has gotten worse and worse each season and in fact is ranked 30th out of 32 Teams the last 3 combned Seasons.. I am not saying Samuel is the main culprit or reason. for this, but he has contributed no doubt and especially in overall Red-Zone Defense ,… So what are the Eagles exactly missing by moving Samuel and trying out DCR at his natural position and implemented a Press-Man COverage Scheme that best utlizes Asmo & DCR talents.. and a scheme the Samuel is not best suited for..
There’s no looking back here, Eagles are moving forward with a SEcondary Coach and a new scheme in the Secondary, Asante Smuel did not fit the plans Sschematically, Locker-room wise or Salary wise, end of story, and time to move on.. We all knew he was going to be moved and that last Season was his final season as an Eagle.. What’s the surprise, disappointment about now….

  32. eagles0 – I’m not assuming DRC is the answer. Never said that. But he is the starter opposite Nnamdi for this year, and we’ll see how he plays.

When you say you haven’t seen good play from him – does that count the last 2 games when he was actually playing outside CB? You saw him play poorly in the slot. He sucked there. He’s not gonna be there. You’re like songs – looking at things in a vacum. It ain’t in the vacum.

DRC will be playing under a different secondary coach, next to different players, with a defined role that he is comfortable and went to the probowl for.

I’m not saying he’ll play well. But I am saying your argument that he’ll play poorly is worthless because the context will be ENTIRELY different.

IT IS AN UNKOWN. Why can’t some fans accept an unkonw?

We will have to wait and see. But your assertion that he will be bad is just as assinine as an assertion (that I didn’t make) that he’ll be good.

  33. Paulman…..do you think our corner problems early was due to the Eagles trading Brown and replacing him with garbage?

How about Patterson…when QB’s stayed away from Samuel because the right corner was made a blind spot?

So, please…..We could be doing to the Left Corner as we did a few years back with the right corner.

The Eagles are good for finally addressing on blind spot only to create another.

  34. eagles0superbowls

Fair enough Schiller like my original thought “Songs & Navy — you’re both sort of correct”

  35. Songs – your are saying that our CB opposite Nnamdi is a new blind spot. Your definition of blind spot is the team ignoring the position – doing nothing to put a quality player there. NOT THE CASE

Actually, we are placing a former prowbowl CB at that spot. You’re saying he’s not that good. You’re citing last year – where he was playing on a bad D, with a bad MLB, with unstabiliy accross the board. New DC, Bad secondary coach. New DL. New DL system. No Cox, No Kendricks. No Boykin. Injured Allen. DIFFERENT AND WORSE ACROSS THE BOARD – so CRAPPY HORRIBLE support of your point.

Not over yet – you give other evidence – maybe that will pan out…. let’s see. Your other evidence is a stat from a different team, two years ago. Players play different on different teams at different times. That’s a fact. Whop, your other evidence sucks too!

SO – you’re point of the Eagles now having a blind spot at CB opposite Nnamdi is…….

    BULLSHIT B U L L S H I T BULLSHIT

  36. My sources tell me that the Eagles just hired a new equipment manager who has never equipment managed…This will cost us at least a game

  37. eagles0superbowls

Schiller — you both could be wrong also — like the McNabb/Kolb debate whoever picked either side in 2010 both were wrong

  38. eagles- No, it’s not possible for us both to be wrong. Songs is arguing that our secondary will be bad and cost us, specifically DRC. I’m not arguing that they will be good and not cost us, or that DRC will work out well. I’m arguing that his argument is BULLSHIT and that things are different so we can’t know.

I’m saying that we can’t know, so how can I be wrong?

I think you’re reading into my comments as if I am saying I know how things will turn out. I’m not saying that. Songs is.

  39. schill, ……was In the last preseason when I said the linebackers were garbage and will cost us games?

was it guys like you who claimed I was wrong for saying this?

    was I wrong?

  40. Songs- we are talking about Asam- thats the topic you and I were talking about…. he doesnt fit what we want anymore. when we grabbed him, they wanted more turnovers. I have outlined over and over that THIS desire was one MAJOR reason we have become a soft D. I thinkthey are trying to undothis. Press corners would make the QB hold the ball. Asam was the “out” for the last few years. not that he was the problem, but his style of D is a problem for what the other 10 guys are doing. PLUS- he costs a butt load.

  41. Now about the lb’s and safties. yes Songs you and the other 99% of eagles fans knew that we were not ready. But they willbe stronger now. the coaching? we shall see.

  42. christ songs you are like a seven year old – can I have candy – no, can I have candy, no, can I have soda, no, can I have soda, no, can I play with matches, no, can I play with matches, no,

each and evey post you try and change your previous lame ass argument -

and you complain about EVERYTHING so that when ANYTHING goes wrong you can say you were right – and even if things go right – you become mega bitch and gripe about what went right (like for example the draft this weekend)
until you can find a way to argue it was wrong -

dude – quit being such a douche – try this

Go eagles! Fly Eagles Fly – on the road to victory, Fly Eagles Fly score a touchdown one two three

for someone who praises Dawkins so much, do you think he lead by trying to get guys fired up -

or did he lead by being a bitch?

as for the statement was I wrong – dude – you are like a broken watch – you are right twice every day – the other 23 hours 58 minutes you are just fucked up

  43. I wish songs and dawk got stuck on an elevator someone. It would start out amicably. But when the elevator worked again, only one man would come out. Dawk is a religious man but he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from beating some sense into songs

  44. Shill are you stating how dumb I am, with the same logic that you used when I told you Vinny Curry, should be a target for this team because Babin, and Cole are getting long in the tooth, and because I dont like Babin?

You must not be tired of hearing me telling you to kiss my ass……

What you say is logical, but here is the flaw. Even with the inexperience, and the chance to improve, with Casey Matthews, you have nothing that says he has potential; He CAN’T COVER…PERIOD…..I agree he did improve as the season went on Paul…….he was only 5 yards behind the RB, or TE, instead of the 15-20 yards, he was giving up the first couple of games…..congratulations to him.

The Eagles drafted him with the stupid idea that they were going to his brother, instead they got a reject from the Matt McCoy cloning center…..He sould have never been drafted, and they will hold on to him Paul because they are too stubborn to admit they made a mistake.

We will see how much, he quote – unquote, improves. My feeling is he will be no more a factor than he was last year. Sometimes getting better, Shiller, comes down to if you have it or not. GMCliff says he doesn’t have it; never did. You can make the argument you used to defend every rookie drafted from round 1-7, everybody has a chance to improve. Usually. the ones that have IT, take a step forward. I say Casey Matthews catches up to that level as fast as he can catch a RB in the flat……….fat chance.

But if and when he regresses Shiller, you will continue to hear me tell you nothing but……… KISS MY ASS!!!!…….Making your talent evaluation look pedestrian………AGAIN.

My opinion will never change, no matter what you say…….so let just wait and see…..I can’t wait to make you eat your words again……….

  45. Gm, my words were eaten on curry, in that I said they didn’t need him so they should draft him high. All the analysts stated that they didn’t need him, he’s a luxary here, he dropped way beyond expected, and they selected him as a best player available/jump on the opportunity that him falling presented. So everyone agrees that I was right, we just got the guy because of where the chips fell and our FO did the right thing. We were both right. I stil say we didn’t need him, but I am ecstatic we got him.

  46. But its amazing how your panties are in a bunch about our 5th (at most) string lb going into his first offseason after this offseason so far. Would you bitch about how ugly the dude who handed you your winning lottery check too?

  47. I don’t gamble…..That being said,……. I give lees than a darn about…..that scrub Casey Matthews, or what your saying in reference to him quite frankly.

They did need Curry. Do you trust, that if Cole, or Babin was injured that we had suitable back ups, that would be able to hold the fort? I know you would say yes, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with Brandon Graham, Phillip Hunt, or Daryl Tapp for an extended period of time. They are only servicable as reserves in a part time role. In my mind we needed a DE, or 2 for the future, becauseour starters, are getting long in the tooth; Cole disappears after week 6, and Babin, to me, isn’t all that. We got a potentially dominant Pass Rusher. It’s smart to reload.

  48. Shill we will just agree to disagre on this subject. Why don’t we put mutual respect, and peace between us, and continue to voice our opinions with the same maturity, and insight.

I may not agree with everything you say but…….I respect it enough to read it.
I really was never upset until you, displayed disrespect, and called me out my name. I’d rather share some reasonable point of view, with the objective of hopefully cheering as our Eagles take that ride on Broad Street. This was Andy’s best draft in my opinion – last year was nothing but reaches (Jarrett, Matthews, Marsh, etc) – amazing what is accomplished when your job is on the line. He changed his philosophy, on what type of players to draft..somewhat. I know I am not always right. I was incorrect when I said they would play Kendricks, on the strongside; but I do think he would be better suited to play the weakside. They needed to draft another big SOLB, I wanted Nigel Bradham, who was drafted by Buffalo in the 4th round (totally within reach of a trade), but I can’t complain, because as a whole I was pleased.

  49. gm – sorry me calling out your name hit a note. I never inteded to make you feel bad. And yes, we will just have to disagree on some things. Funny thing is we actually do agree on one thing – i wanted them to get another LB too. I wanted them to get like Kendricks, and Wagner. Or plug in any combo of the reasonable fits at LB. That’s why I fealt that Curry or any DE was less important than getting 2 quality LB prospects. That said, I am very happy with Curry now. It was awesome hearing what an Eagles fan he’s been his whole life. Great Great story of him being there for the Dawkins presser.

  50. Yeah, i hear you Shill. I think Curry is going to be a future all pro if he can stay healthy; a lot more talent than J. Parker, a bigger Trent Cole, who shouldn’t wear down like Cole does every year. I am juiced for this season.
