Recapping The Final Three Rounds Of The Eagles’ Draft
BREAKING NEWS, Eagles, News Saturday, April 28th, 2012
On the third and final day of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Eagles spent the majority of the day adding some depth to the offensive side of the ball.
With the 153rd pick in the NFL Draft, the Eagles chose to pick up some depth for their offensive line, drafting Purdue offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.
Kelly has a 6-8, 321 lb frame, and was a starter for three seasons. He’s a tall, lean, athletic offensive tackle, and was an attractive late round option for offensive line coach Howard Mudd. The fifth round pick isn’t a lock to make the roster, and could be a practice squad candidate, but it will be interesting to see what Mudd can do with this raw prospect.
In the sixth round, the Eagles first took wide receiver Marvin McNutt. McNutt is a physical receiver, and stands at 6-3, 216 lbs. He’s a good possession receiver, but there are questions about his consistency and effort. He’ll have an opportunity to push Chad Hall and Riley Cooper for a roster spot.
Six picks later, the Eagles grabbed another offensive lineman, Brandon Washington. Washington is a 6-3, 320 lb guard from the University of Miami. He’s very athletic for his size, and some believe he has the talent to eventually develop into a starter. He has the talent for Howard Mudd to work with.
With their final pick in the seventh round (the pick acquired from Atlanta in the Asante Samuel salary dump trade), the Eagles took running back Bryce Brown from Kansas State. Brown has good size for an NFL running back at 6-3, 220 lbs. He has speed, strength, and talent, but his draft stock was greatly impacted because of his lack of production in college. His greatest accomplishment was running for over 400 yards in his freshman year at Tennessee, but since then has failed to crack the starting lineup. He transferred to Kansas State last year, but left the team after learning he would not start. The Eagles need depth behind LeSean McCoy, and the chance will be there for the young running back to earn a roster spot.

Okay think about, those big TE’s in the NFL come from where?….wait…wait, thats right they come from colleges, and it just so happens that Kendrick also played in college where he had some success playing, and guess what those same big jumping TE’s were there also, wow.
Besides unless you are in the redzone, TE’s are not making those type of outside WR leaps, they are just big body, slower slot WRs, making short jumps. So Kendricks skill sets can handle that. Stay close and get your hand/arm out there to defend the ball, or make the tackle and prevent the YAC.
Here is something scary, as bad as the Defense played at times, and as long as it took them to gel, and figure out who they were, and wilh new coaches, they still finished ranked 8-10 in the entire NFL, that my friends leaves me with a good feeling inside and plenty of confidence for this season and beyond!!
As always “LONG LIVE THE EAGLES”
Good point Mono
Oh I just read your old post I meant good point about our defense not about covering Te’s. Mono Kendricks didn’t play sam on his teams defense. The eagles our putting him in that spot. He didn’t cover TE’s all the time. This will now become one of his primary jobs. I’m not sure which games you watch but these TE’s are athletic as hell times yours.
All I am saying is I love the pick just not the position their putting him at that’s all. He would make a great weaksid or MLB.
And I am aware he played all the LB positions in college. Again I love the pick but playing against guys so tall that can leap also on a regular basis will be a problem.
Let me stop myself here before it gets to carried away. He is a great pick and he is much better than what we had so it’s a definite upgrade, well done eagles I was just nit picking thats all.
Yep. Pdiddy brother you are correct on that, but dude is faster than most TE’s, and covers greatand is a great athlete himself so we will see ifhe can do the job. I am hoping that he can.
He is better than Matthews who in spite of his flaws turned out to be a good cover LB. But yeah I get what you are saying on Kendricks, still I think he will fill out nicely.
With our Dline, hopefully the TE will only have time to either do a quick short route equal to a run play, or out jump our man but has no where to go but to the turf with who ever the Sam is all ove him. A bother can hope right. Of course the Walgreen option would be the QB doesn’t have time and either throws it away, runs, or gets smack jackled whapped! LOL Time was mine, now its yours again.
No time needed agreed.
Being faster than NFL TE means nothing in the NFL. Jason Whitten and Tony Gonzalez cant outrun me. Its called their body is so much bigger than the little fast guy covering them. A big strong guy will dominate a little strong guy everytime. Have you ever wondered how Whitten is always open? It sure isnt because he is fast.
Where’s the Super Bowl being played this Year.. Is It New York ???
lets not forget about sam mills pdiddy. he was a short “fire hydrant” and tough as nails Lb. plus kendricks jumped the highest out of all Lb’s at the combine. he seems like a humble kid who had to earn every stripe he’s gotten. i believe he’s going to be pure dynamite TNT when he hits the field.
The Superbowl will be in New Orleans Paulman.
I agree guys and let me say this I am very happy to have him, but read dag’s post he has a point that’s all I am saying. But I am sure he will do fine as well as our d-line do their part.
The total number of tall, capable of covering TEs, talented quality SAM lbs in this years draft = 0. Same description for this years free agency period = 0.
next best thing? Keuchley or Kendricks.
Nuff said.
Charles Barkley has higher vertical than Shaq. Charles Barkley runs faster than Shaq. Charles is more athletic than Shaq. But guess what Charles Barkley cant cover Shaq. Hes to damn small. lol Im just messing around dont anybody get mad. .
Schill I think keenan robinson would have been great at sam for us. You will see he is in our division now he got drafted by the redskins in the fourth. I know your joking dag but I feel you it’s called positioning
And for all you Poe fans I am making a premature prediction but you heard it here first. I think the kid that pittsburgh drafted in the fourth. Will be way better than Poe. It’s obviously a wait and see but I trust the steelers judgment.
BUT AGAIN KENDRICKS WILL BE GREAT FOR US GOD DAMMIT.
A lot of you guys wanted the eagles to draft bobby wagner from boise st because he has size and he can run. Kendricks should play weakside until he is ready to take over Mlb.
Wagner was from Utah St… He was barely over 6′ and the same weight as Kendrick. A lot of scouts thought Wagner would be a better fit inside in a 3-4 but I’m assuming that Seattle will probabaly play him inside at the Mike. I agree that Kendrick would probably be a better fit as the Will linebacker in this defense but all the other Linebackers that are on the Eagles roster besides Ryan & Chaney are Will linebackers. The thought here being just getting the best guys on the field.
The whole issue with height and covering TE’s is a little overboard if you ask me… Darrel Revis (5’11″) seems to do a good enough job at covering WR’s that are 3″ to 4″ taller than him. If a player can cover than height really shouldnt be an issue. There aren’t a lot of 6’3 or 6’4 OLB’s that can cover TE’s in the NFL.
schiller – watch some games on Boykin…..he is a very poor tackler. He isnt much better than Hanson
I was one of the guys that wanted wagner but Kendricks is better than wagner hes a better tackler, hes better in coverage ,he hits harder and hes faster… No linebackers in the nfl can cover the TEs all the TEs are too fast and polished.. At least kendricks will be there with the TE everytime.. hes that fast some had him at 4.41 at the combine..
@ jott1972 for his size he can tackle he could get alittle more solid and become an antoine winfield.. but that might not happen if hes returning kicks.. i think maybe we should use damaris johnson as returner ..
I am more afraid of Kendricks being too tiny against the run and screen passes — if a lineman gets a finger on him he is blocked — he is small
Larrwd I am really suprised at you of all people, how is he better at sam when that’s what wagner plays.Plus every expert has him listed as a ILb, only the eagles have him slotted as a Sam. But I will not argue with you guys any further we shall see. My bad Wagner is from Utah st and he is listed at 6′ 1″
hes short but he isnt small …but i wonder whats going to happen between chaney and rolle….
@ diddy rumor has it .. that in th wide 9 its good to have 2 middle linebacker types .. and it makes sense becuase the gaps left on the line.. i feel good about the pick he might be the best linebacker in the draft.. im more interested whats going to happen between chaney and rolle..
Watching the the video of Curry’s press conference. Good stuff there…..
@ eagles0 worst case senario is he’ll play weakside.. but i dont think its fair to chaney to keep moving him around .. they keep saying the LBs are interchangable but there are small details and intricacies that need to be polished with repetition .. the guy still had 92 tackles a sack and 3 picks in only his second year.. also let a guy play one position until hes comfortable . they could have caused his neck injury .. casey mathews was a cancer last year
Larrwd — Kendricks walks into mini-camp better than Chaney, Rolle and Mathews — I’m just worried that maybe he wasn’t the best choice for an OLB but like I read Schiller write – a big need and no one available in Free Agency or noticeably better in the draft he is worth a try
Not to be Debbie Downer, but does anyone else think it was odd or just poor timing as an Organization and to Brian Dawkins to hold his Press Conference about retiring as an Eagle and having his Number Retired during the Draft Weekend.. Why not have that Press-Conference and media attention in acoupld of weeks so it can get all the attention that it deserves… Who are the communications and marketing peopl efor the EAgles.. HAve in it 2 weeks and you have a wholeweek’s woroth of build-up which is nice for Brian and of course for the Eagles,, His annoucement and the team plans got lost in the shuttle of Draft Activity in my opinion which is a shame…
and for the record, I like LB M Kendricks a lot and think he will be a very good player for the Eagles, but I am not sold on him being the SAM Backer due to his lack of size.. I envision him at the WILL Spot and then replace MLB Ryans in obvious passing situations since Kenndricks is very good in pass coverage and Ryans is not..
I think by Camp time it will be worked out and the LB Corps will be as follows
WILL Backer – Kendricks
MLB/Mike – Ryans
SAM Backer- Chaney
Then on Passing Downs
WILL – Rolle
MLB/Mike – Kendricks
SAM – Matthews
Fokou, Clayton, & Lloyd will probably be the odd-players out and Jordan probably makes the roster due to his versatility..
Pman thank you for talking some sense into these people about our LB’s. And yes I agree it was bad timing. They should have picked a time when dawk gets all the spotlight to himself. He earned that without question.
Gotta disagree Paulman,I think Clayton will stick around due to his ability to play safety and linebacker. He can also cover alot better. I do agree that Fokou and Lloyd will be out too.
dudes – stop with the will and sam and strong side and weak side – the eagles do NOT I repeat do NOT rotate or flop their LBs based on power – you might as well call them Right OLB and Left OLB..
Navy you are correct sir but Coach Reid made the distinction in his press conference so it is easy to understand why we are calling him a SAM
god- I have to go fix him again – sheez…. like tiny electric shocks to my brain….
I’ve said for 2 years now that LB Clayton should not only take reps at Safety, that the Coaches should moce him full-time to Safety to immerse himself for that Position..
I was thinking when playing predominately running teams like the Steelers,Ravens and others this year, How about if the Eagles went to a 5-2-4 Defensive Line-up with Dixon right over Center, then Jenkins and Patterson over the Guard and Tackle Gap and then have Cole & Cox ont the Edges outside the OT Shoulders.. Have Ryans and Kendricks as you 2 LB’s who would line-up behind the Jenkins and Patterson… Try running the ball against this Front.. I would use this as a base defense of for many plays, but 1st Downs versus running teams could put those teams in 2nd & Long right away ..
here’s my 2012 roster:
QB 3
Vick, Edwards, Foles
(kafka gets traded for next to nothing or released, it has to be edwards b/c we need a credible backup)
RB 3
McCoy, Lewis, Polk
(i just have a hunch it will be Polk over Bryce, i think Bryce ends up on the P.Squad)
FB 1
Schmitt
(they will bring him back)
WR 5
Jackson, Maclin, Avant, Cooper, McNutt
(i would love to see Avant traded, b/c contrary to popular perception he has almost as many clutch drops as clutch catches, but i don’t think they can bring themselves to move on from him, and that stunts the development of guys like Cooper and McNutt, or in the past guys like Chad Hall, Brandon Gibson, and Danny Amendola. the eagles might keep 6 and if so it might be chad hall, or one of the many WRs they picked up from UDFAs)
TE 2
Celek, Harbor
(good to go)
OL 9
Peters, Mathis, Kelce, Watkins, Herremans
Bell, Dunlap, Washington, Kelly
(Peters might go on IR, and if he does, that opens up a roster spot. otherwise, this is a very solid group, altho i don’t see the appeal of Kelly, i thought that was a wasted pick. the eagles might keep Vandervelde, esp if Peters is on PUP. they might sign a FA too)
DL 10
Cole, Cox, Jenkins, Babin
Curry, Patterson, Landri, Dixon, Hunt, Graham
(we finally lose the deadweight of Laws and Abiamiri, thank god. personally, i would trade patterson, who has weird med issues and costs too much to not start, and isn’t real productive anyway. Graham will prove this year he is a bust. i hope tapp gets cut to give other guys a chance, ergo he’s not above)
LB 6
Kendricks, Ryans, Chaney
Jordan, Rolle, Clayton
(thats who SHOULD be there, but the coaches might not yet want to admit they were wrong on Matthews and Lloyd and Sapp and whoever else)
S 4
Allen, Jarrett
Coleman, Anderson
(Coleman might still be starting. Jarrett needs to show now he should be starting. Allen needs to show he’s over his injury, and Anderson is strictly special teams)
CB 5
Namdi, DRC
Hanson, Boykin, Marsh
(hopefully Boykin pushes Hanson right away, and the coaches won’t give up on Marsh yet)
ST 3
Kicker = Henery
Punter = Henry or whoever. i wish it was still Rocca.
Long Snap = Dorenbos
51
that leaves two open roster spots.
Navy – you’re getting caught up in semantics and you’re on your own island with your version (not saying there aren’t other people with you there…). Reid, JIM JOHNSON, the team, and all the media use the SAM MIKE WILL terms even if there is a technicality and they should be ROLB, MLB or MIKE, and LOLB.
You’re not gonna win on this because everyone else uses it the way they use it. I know it’s your pet peeve, but it isn’t gonna change so you might as well just give it up.
Navy – but seriously, nice draft eh? Have a good week man
looks about right andrewp. I think Casey Mathews will be on the roster as well asundrafted rookie CB Cliff Harris if he canstay out of trouble. To much talent at covering man to man andpress aswell as returning kicks.
Brandon Boykin is a helluva kick returner. I think we got our kick returner boys!
ok Andrewp,
A bit pre-mature, but for the heck of it….
Special Teams (3) Kicker Henerey, Punter Henry and LS Donebros
Offense (25 Players)
QB – 3 (Vick,Edwards,Foles) – Kafka gets released, there’s no trade value
RB – 3 (McCoy, Lewis, Polk – Greg Cooper to Practice squad, Bryce a bust)
FB – 1 (Havilli – UFA signee Emil Igweganu to the Practice squad)
WR – 6 (D-Jax,Maclin,Avant, Cooper, McNutt & M Gilyard )
TE – 2 (Celek, Harbor)
OL – 10 (Bell,Mathis,Kelce,Watkins,Herremans as the Starting 5
with Dunlap,Vandervelde,Gibson,DJ Jones and Kelly as Back-ups)
J Peters starts on PUP to start the season but must be activated by Week #6 or placed on IR and be lost for entire Season.. The Eagles roll the dice and activate Peters though he won’t be able to play until Week #10/#11 but the Team Activate him anyways and releases K Dunlap as the Eagles feel comfortable with D Bell and DJ Jones to hold the fort down until Peters returns) 6th Round Draft pick Guard Brandon Washington to Practice Squad
Defense (25 Players)
DE (5) – Cole,Babin, Graham, Hunt and Curry (Tapp traded for Draft picks)
DT (5) – Jenkins,Cox, Dixon, Thornton and Landri (M Patterson is placed on PUP) and eventually a medical settlement is reached with him as he retires, the Eagles do not want to go thru some sort of set-back in his brain/head injury and do not want to risk the chance of Patterson having another seizure, black-out, etc,etc.. I belive they come to a monetary settlement as they puush him to retire..
LB (6) Ryans,Chaney, Kendricks, Rolle, Matthews, Jordan
(LLoyd and Monte Simmons placed on Practice Squad) , Fokou is released
CB (5) Asmo,DCR, Hanson,Marsh, & Boykin
Safety (4) Allen, Coleman, Jarrett & Anderson
That’s it for now..
Damn Paulman you have been trying to get rid of Mike Patterson for the last 3 years now… I think Patterson will be around for a little while longer myself and I’m pretty sure than Hanson won’t be an Eagle this year. Remember they cut him last year and then decided to bring him back later in the preseason. By the looks of it, it seems Darryl Tapp is on his way out too as long as there are no more offseason injuries( fingers crossed ). Colt Anderson may be on the IR or PUP due to the ACL injury late in the season & I doubt Jason Peters will play at all this coming season. I see him on the IR too. The positions to watch for Jobs will be the LB spots and the Oline depth.
Getting back to the Mychal Kendricks and the different positions at Linebacker… Kendricks was a ILB for CAL who ran a 3-4 def. Kendricks was the Will backer in the 3-4 which is the weak inside backer in the 3-4. D J Holt who was sighed by the Redskins last night was the Mike inside backer for CAL. So basically that position does not exist on the Eagles. My asumption is they want to give Kendricks a chance to see what he can do there but like the rest of you I still feel he will be better on the weak side with Ryans & Chaney at the other spots.
yeah schill it was a nice draft – and yeah – all by myself on that one.. just too pedantic at times for my own good… mentally telling myself to let it gooo
Thanks for the breakdown paulman ..
Whats everybody think about this Chris Polk kid.. He was the third ranked back by some and didnt even get drafted .. 5’10 1/2 212 and ran a 4.44 hand and 4.49 electric at his proday .. Never seen anything like it there were running backs with worse injuries that got drafted… and this kid didint even miss anytime.. on tape he look ike a beast
Doubt we put Patterson on PUP. If he is healthy, he plays! As for what transpires in mid-season, doesn’t that depend on who has been hurt and on the IR. Doubt Peters comes back this year.
Andrew I agree, Casey Matthews SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS TEAM…….PERIOD
