Report: Phillies To Offer Hamels $120 million

According to ESPN’s Jon Heyman, the Phillies will offer Cole Hamels at least $120 million in their upcoming contract proposal.

If this is what the Philadelphia front office considers to be a “substantial offer”, they’d better prepare themselves to lose their 28-year old star. Hamels can easily receive more than $150 million on the open market, and I’d be surprised if he would accept anything less.

I believe the Phillies know they can’t afford to pay Hamels the sky-high contract he desires, and right now they’re doing their best to show the fans that they made an effort and did what they could to keep him before trading him away.

Trade Cole for now, thenTrade Roy Halladay next year, and Give Cole what it would take to bring him back next season. This process is hopeless. They have to cut some excess weight like Rollins, Polanco, Pence, Blanton, Victorino, Utley, Halladay, Kendricks, and if necessary Ryan Howard.

Rollins is 33 hitting .261, gold glove defense he’s not what he was but it’s ridiculous to think he’s the problem!
Victorino and polanco and Blanton are gone after season
Halliday has one more year then a vesting option, ride that horse
Howard? What are talking about? Isn’t it evident what a healthy Howard means to them? Have you watched them this year? Did you you watch them the years he played 152-160 games a year?

5 years, $120M, IS A SUBSTANTIAL OFFER, but he will get at least 6-7 years. They better be prepared to lose him, if this true. I have no reason to doubt Heyman, because he is very well respected, has many sources, & is mostly correct! GM, they need to rebuild, but Utley, Howard, & Polanco are worthless on the trade market, Rollins is under the 10 & 5 rule, in which gives him a full no trade clause, without his permission (just had a baby; Ain’t happening), & Blanton & Kendrick, couldn’t fetch us some pine-tar & Bubble yum. Also, you can’t trade Halladay. We only have him for 1 more year, due to him not meeting his inning incentives, this year. Let him prove his health & worth, the next 1.5 years. Although Lee has a limited NTC, he is the one, IMHO, that needs to go, ASAP! Hopefully NITWIT, Amaro, can prove we incorrect, & pull off a quick, successful rebuild, or it’s going to be a long, couple, of years!

If Cole is smart and not greedy hell take the deal;hell be 33 and a free agent again!! How much money did Cliff Lee demand at 33? He has a chance to make 70 million more if he takes a 5 year deal.Deal his ass if he says no!

I love this article because the first thing I thought when this news broke about the Phil’s making another push to sign cole was that this is a classic example of a team public relations department at work.

I am guessing is it may be an offer or similar to an offer cole previously rejected.

If that is the offer then he goes into the FA market. He’s the best FA pitcher at that age in awhile. His big game experience is something that every team craves and will knock his socks off.

haveacigar, Hamels won’t be going to FA (at least after playing with the Phillies) if he doesn’t take that offer. He will be traded plain and simple, the Phillies will be able to get some legit young talent in return too. From what I know, this will give teams like the Rangers a chance to snag him up who have the high prospects available…before big money teams like the Dodgers (with no real prospects) could just send a blank check to Hamels in the offseason. But again there is no way they just let him walk this year..For what? to finish out this season?

I was so against trading Hamels. He was always my favorite Phillie through this crop of players…Even when we got Roy and Cliff, if it was game 7 in the World Series i would have picked Hamels as my guy. MAybe im just biased because he single handily won us a ring. But as each day that goes by, and when I look at the future in the teams…maybe getting 2-3 young studs who can hit and scores runs might be the better option. Always a possibility of getting HAmels back in the future. just saying im kinda on the ropes right now for whats better for the team

my point is that he won’t sign a $120 mill contract. i think he will get traded but then test free agency in the winter. A very interesting time period for our team. I can tell you one thing the Phils have enjoyed seeing a full stadium, long lines at the concession stands and extra revenue from the playoffs.
Go young? cheap payroll of kids making $500k a year and empty stadium…. i don’t think that will play well.

One thing that everyone has to keep in mind is how young and talented the rest of teh NL East is.. take a look at the Nats/Mets Rosters, filled with young players in their mid-late 20’s who haven’t even reach their primes yet..
I sstated in Feb that the Nats were poised to really make some news this year due to a great Pitchign Staff and a solid Bullpen and jsut as important, a hungry attitude with an agressive Manager in Davy Johnson who is a perfect fit for that Team, you guys laughed it off stating it’s the same old NAat’s well I am here to tell you they will be the team to beat for the next 4-5 Seasons with a great middle of the field and they have played well even though they have had 4 prominet Players/Starters out for most of this Season and they still are playing great ball (RF Werth, LF Morse, Catcher Ramos and Closer Storen)… They and the Braves are the Teams to catch for the next few years and having Doc/Lee past their primes and a good Closer in Papelbon is not good enough to compete with these Teams in 2012 and moving forward unless the Phils get some Offense and a Bullpen.. Remember that the Phils play at Citizens Bank Park o havign a small ball type of Team is not a fit for where they play 1/2 their games.. Get the boppers back.. Looking back 2 Off-Seasons ago, remember some of us wanted 3B Adrian Beltre.. All he’s don’e is kill it with the Texans with his Bat and his GLove.. He would hit 40 HR in CBP and still be a Gold Glove 3B..
All Water under the Bridge now..
