Jeray Demby is a very good all-around athlete with excellent football intangibles that will make him a highly sought after prospect. While he certainly does not yet have the bulk that is usually requisite of a hard-hitting safety, Demby brings the wood on every play. The strike he delivers at 172 pounds is very impressive and will only become more powerful as he continues to fill out.
As a safety, he has a good sense of pursuit angles, when to break down and when to attack the ball carrier. He shows great acceleration to the football once the ball carrier declares a direction and – much like the better safety prospects, he closes on ball carriers much quicker than they can react.
Demby’s toughness shows in his offensive plays as well. He is not afraid to lower his shoulder and punish defenders when avoiding them is not an option. When he does have open space, he shows good quickness, vision and decent speed. While he doesn’t always beat the tough pursuit angles, Demby shows a sharp dead-leg cut which is a remarkable tool that allows him to fool defenders and gain extra yardage.
When he does have the opportunity to catch the ball, Demby is a hands catcher with a high level of comfort with catching the ball away from his body. He also flashes the ability to time his jumps well and catch balls at their highest point. That skill will help him on offense and, more likely, on defense as a safety.
What would round out Demby’s profile is more footage of him in zone and 1 on 1 coverage over the next two years, whether in games or in camps. He has the athleticism to excel at those aspects of the game. Given that he already looks like a very good safety prospect as a sophomore, putting evidence of cover skills on his resume will cause his recruiting profile to rise sharply.
