Eagles Are Open To Trading Down

HowieRoseman1Yesterday, Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman talked about trades and the probability of trades.  During his time as the Eagles GM he has shown us that he’s open to trades at any and all times during the draft.  He said as much yesterday during his hour with the local media.  Roseman’s comment regarding trades, “We’re open to anything” says a lot.

Part of the reason for his attitude is the change that took place a couple of years ago in the rookie salary structure.  The lowering of the rookie salaries has enhanced the probability of trades in the early part of the draft.  In the past teams had to shell out record contracts to rookies, but that is no longer the case and it makes quality players in the first round a better value.

“It’s easier to maneuver with this new rookie wage scale,” Roseman said. “Before, it was cost-prohibitive in terms of cash and cap with your team to trade into the top-five, no matter how much you liked the player going forward because you were going to be hamstrung in some situation or another. It gives you some flexibility. You’re not as reluctant to trade up – not based on your evaluation, but based on how it’s going to affect your team in the future.”

Trade talks start much earlier than most of the fans realize.  Teams are doing trade talk throughout the draft process.

“Even during the combine, you talk to people about their pick and what’s going on,” Roseman said. “The serious conversation will pick up next week, when you’ve had a chance to sit back, look at your draft board, go through scenarios and figure out what you’re looking at and what you’re going to get.”

Roseman shared information about last year’s trade with Seattle in the first round of the draft.  The trade had been finalized prior to the day of the draft.

“I think there are teams that are very comfortable giving you scenarios they’ll stick to in that situation,” Roseman said. “With us and Seattle last year with [Seahawks GM] John [Schneider], it was very easy to get to an agreement on the compensation if the player we were interested in was there and they felt comfortable moving back.

“I think what that does, it takes the negotiating out of being on the clock, because when you’re on the clock, there’s a lot of things going on. You’re getting a lot of phone calls and when you’re starting something new or from scratch and you’re going through that process, time runs out fairly quickly.”

You could see where a wise draft manager would like to make an agreement prior to the draft because it would give them a chance to look it over and think it through enough to make sure that they saw every side of the deal.

Still trading down cannot be treated nonchalantly because there are players at the top of most drafts that can’t be had later in the first round.  The Eagles know that the top ten players in this draft have a better chance of succeeding that the guys at the end of the first round, so you can’t trade down too low and wind up missing out on grabbing a probable starter or star.

“I think that there is, certainly on our draft board, a clear line of players we think can be elite talents in this league,” Roseman said.

As for the second round, the Birds have the 35th pick in the draft and Roseman is looking forward to playing the draft game on Friday with teams who might have their eyes on a player, who has surprisingly slid down.

“We don’t have 35 first-round grades, so you always hope that a guy you have in the first round slips to that spot,” he said. “I think there’s going to be a lot of action because I think there’s going to be a lot of good players. I think that Friday’s going to be fun.”

I hope the fun ends with the Eagles have acquired another good player or two.

I will be SHOCKED if we don’t move down. With 3 OTs being coveted by 4 teams drafting in back of us, we can pick up one of our targets and get extra pick(s). I can even see a scenario we trade back as far as 7 and still get Dion Jordan or Dee Milliner. The key will be who does JAX draft at 2,and does Arizona trade with us or Oakland?

There are about 4 or 5 Day 1 Starters though at OT
The Big 3 Joeckel,Fisher,Johnson for sure
The next 3 Fluker, Pugh, Long are not a given that they will be Day 1 Starter’s

The Big Question that Remains is Chip Kelly/Howie Roseman comfortable with Todd Herremans as a RT.. If they are, then they may wait to mid-rounds to grab an OT.. If they believe that Herremans is better suited back at Guard (which I do) then they should grab one of the Top 3 OT who they can plug in from Day 1and have 8-10 Year Starter at a Critical Position

Exactly Paulman. But this could have been addressed in free agency. So ya it looks like the Eagles will be taking one of the three tackles with the first pick. Makes perfect sense

My Preference is Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson who would be perfect at RT for 2-3 Seasons and then move over to LT to replace Jason Peters when he get’s ready to retire.. For some reason, I am not enamored with Luke Joeckel..
I just don’t see the Passion from him, it’s like he’s a tactician and thinking man’s OT which is fine.. but I rather see an OT like Peters who plays nasty and looks to dominate opponents.. I just don’t see this from Joeckel..

I think Lane Johnson is too light in the pants, and isn’t physical enough to play LT, and is a RT only. He will get dominated by some of the premier, and adequate DE’s in the NFL……..not as physical as Fisher, although he too could use some more weight, but is capable physically to play LT, in the future. He should also start out at RT.

Paul, I know you are gonna give me you shpill about Lane Johnson. With confidence I disagree.

I like Lane Johnson Long-Term Upside more than Joekel/Fisher
He may struggle a bit at first and definietly needs to stregnthen his core and base which he will.. I think he’s an All-Pro OT (at the Right Side)
in 2-3 Years Time
Re Foles, I hope the Eagles stick with him as I have stated numerous times and remember I was probably the only one on here that had FOles on the Radar last Draft so I want to see him succeed as an Eagle.. I am just not sold on CHip Kelly thinking along the same lines.. but I think in the end, it’s Foles/Vick/Dixon as the 3 QB’s on the 2013 Roster and build the Defensive/Offensive Lines this Draft and go from there would be their best Strategy for long-term success..
I have this inkling in the back of my mind that GM Roseman really wants to make a splash and wants to obtain Revis.. The Eagles are one of the fw Teams that have the Cap Space to take his Contract on and we all know that any deal to obtain Revis will have to include QB Foles, which I don’t want to happen, but feel that it is a very good possibility and if they do this, then Eagles will also end up wasting a high Draft Pick on a Developmental QB from this weak QB Class, again, I don’t want this to happen but think that it very may well end up this way…

Johnson, isn’t now, nor ever will be, better than Joeckel & Fisher. I like his upside, but he’s another project, that’s 2 seasons removed, from being a TE. He’s a project RT, with upside, who will be overdrafted.

They need to Upgrade RG & RT..
If the Draft Fisher, slide Herreman’s to RG or Hope Watkins Spets up,but eithe way, they need to Draft a Guard/Center for interior Depth for this will probably be Herreman’s final Season as an Eagle,as it will be for QB Vick,WR Avant, DE T Cole, LB Ryans… who all are overpaid for teh amount of Production they provide and really don’t fit the Eagles New Schemes moving Forward.. I see them keeping them for 2013, but than, that’s it

But wait paulman you mean Vick is still on the roster? I thought for sure he was a goner after the 2012 season. LOL we make all these bold declarations and it means nothing. If the Chip’s offense is as advertised Maclin isn’t going anywhere. Most of the guys on your list may not make the team this year, Avant, Marsh, Harbor, Allen and possibly Vick if he stinks it up pre-season. My point is until the draft and we see who they actually acquire and not the pipe dreams I see on this site we can speculate all we want but we don’t know anything.

Bryce Brown won’t even be in the NFL by 2014 with the way his Ball Security goes, He had 5-6 Huge Runs which he mostly got by himself and was a result or any great blocking by the OL.. Lots of Talent with Brown, but fundamentally flawed for the NFL outside of his Speed.. It will b einterested to watch to see how much he has matured or not, come this Summer Camp..

paulman how many veteran QB’s that haven’t won anything are still starting for their teams, hell Tony Romo just signed a 100 million dollar contract and all Dallas does is lose but wait it’s not his fault he has potential. Again we can make a list of QB’s who continue to get paid and go out and don’t win anything let me start the list. Cutler, Rivers, Palmer, Stafford, Sanchez, who else Bradford. And before you say all these guys except Sanchez is better then Vick guess what they could of all threw a party and watched the Super Bowl together because only winning matters right?

Draft a big lineman, Fisher or Warnack, build around the future with Nick Foles

March-Oh its open competition Foles will win they will teach 2 offenses.
August-Vick is only starting preseason games it wont last
September-Vick is only starting season opener until hes hurt
November-Vick is out 2 weeks nows Foles chance.
November- Oh shit how can Chip start Dennis Dixon
December- Vick is just starting again because Chip doesn’t want to change offense now he will do it in off-season

I like Da’Rick Rogers…if available that would be a good pickup!

4th a) Eric Fisher
4th b) Chance Warmack – Alabamba – scouting reports says he can get to 2nd level and beat LB’s to the action, has great agility to handle bull rushers/quick pass rushers
4th c) – Xavier Rhodes CB Florida State – this would be my 1st pick if I went CB…half the know nothing Eagles fans on this site would have a heartache with this pick…then thanking me later
4th d)- Dion Jordan DE/LB– could be a perfect fit for the 3-4 at the DE/LB position.

35th a) Jamar Taylor CB – Boise St (recorded as running a 4.33, 40…Good on pass, good on run, pretty physical, good change direction speed. Not afraid to hit.
35th b) Justin Pugh – OG – Syracuse – from what I read about him, says he is quick and can get out to the 2nd level. Possibly a good fit for the possible scheme we’ll see.

67th a) Darius Slay Miss State FS – possibly gone in the 2nd round…but if on the board, would be a good pick and would be a starter first day of camp on coverage skills alone.
67th b) Phillip Thomas – FS – Fresno State – good size, good against run or pass, physical, he will hit you! Can cover will in the slot. Would be concerned about the injury that occurred in a non contact drill. But if he is healthy and can stay healthy he would be an upgrade at safety position day 1.
67th Kyle Long c) – OT – Oregon – familiarity with head coach and 6’6 313lbs
