Eagles Select Matt Barkley In Fourth Round

mbarkleyThe Eagles made a surprising move with their fourth round pick, trading up to selecting USC quarterback Matt Barkley.

Barkley was at one point considered a top quarterback prospect, but his stock had fallen off considerably over the last year.

What does this pick say for the Eagles’ quarterback picture, and for the future of Michael Vick and Nick Foles?

I believe that clearly, despite everything that Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman say, the organization does not believe (or at the very least is not confident) that Nick Foles can be the answer, otherwise, why take a quarterback at this point in the draft?

Excellent pick with the 4th rd pick. I watched a lot of USC games here in cali and this kid can play. He’s a smart guy with a decent arm. Will love to see the competition between Foles and Barkley. So far i give the Eagles a grade A.

Competition? That’s laughable. Barkley is the future. Release Vick and have Foles as backup. I will roll with that. Barkley has same skill set as Brady. Very smart and I can see him running NE offense.

If it wasn’t a new coach and new system. No. But they are both starting at same leve lwith new staff. Barkley is clearly the better player and was clearly projected to go top 5 if it wasn’t for that clown at USC coaching him who just killed Barkley and his draft stock IMO. Pls who knows if Foles is even in the plans. I doubt it but would rather have him backing up Barkley than wasting a year with Vick.

You guys can think what you want but Denny has it right on the money, this pick was about Foles and not Vick. Kelly can play Vick and prepare Barkley to take over sometime during the season, I don’t like the pick because the kid really doesn’t have an NFL arm but what the hell Kelly coached against him for 4 years so he knows him better than I. Don’t like this move at all.. But that’s just me..
I admit as far as Calue goes getting QB Barkkey in the 4th Round is a steal, just not sure he has the arm strength or toughness
To be a #1 Starter in the NFL anytime soon..
Obviously Chip Kelly has Coached against him and knows him very well and what he can bring to the table..
I can’t see coming to Camp with Vick, Foles & Barkley and the others,
Their simply not enough Snaps to go around the get these QB’s enough touches.. I would have to think that Foles is odd-man out at this point since Vick is not really traceable with his Contract.. Big Surprise and to be honest,
A disappointment in this Draft after opening with 2 Solid Picks..

I disagree Paulman. Did anyone think that Brady would have been as good as he is today? Brady doesn’t have the strongest arm, and isn’t mobile at all. But Brady is a very smart QB, and is very accurate with his throws (similar to Barkley) great value for going in the 4th rd

Maybe I’m retarded, which is def. possible, it has been brought to my attenion more than once but M, Barkley’s skill set is much closer to Foles than Vick. I think if they really wanted to get rid of Foles they could have, he has to have some value. Vick on the other hand has very little trade value and as much as I was pulling for the guy he blows. The eagles are not looking for a running qb or they would have drafted one, they had the oppurtunity. I seriously believe listening to Chip speak and looking at them drafting another TE that Foles is the man and Barkley is the backup. The Eagles are looking at multiple formations that cause mismatches and a qb smart enough to take advantage of them and not make mistakes. Not Vicks strong points. I also think Maclin and Jackson will spend alot more time on the sidelines this year. Were gonna run an offense close to NE and I can’t see Vick in any way being successful. Just my read on it. consider the source

I got a late start (my daughters Senior Prom is this afternoon)
After the dust settles, this could end being a great pick,
And it aloe are that use use the Free-Agency period to upgrade the Defense to their liking and are using this Draft to rebuild the Offense which was against most of the “Conventional Wisdom” or at least mine..
This has been an interesting Draft and it appears that Kelly is definitely running the show on who he wants which us probably a good thing since he is the one that will be Coaching these guys.. I still see them adding a Center/Guard
And a multi-purpose RB (Barner, Taylor or Franklin)

One huge advantage for the Eagles when they play the NFC East and familiar Teams , you can just about throw out all the old tapes from the Andy Reid era
For this will be a completely different Offense built in the mold
Of the Pats, 49ers and Stanford more so than a Run-Option Deal that Kelly ran in Oregon.. Big Players, lots of Versatility on Offense and Defense and will be a fresh start for us fans that have been used to the predictable play-Calling and strategy of Andy Reid..

Dag, if they cut him it’s 3mil. and I think but not positive that they gave him that because they had’nt picked a coach yet and did’nt want to close the door on him. The other part of that is they would have had to give him 3 mil. anyway under his old contract. What does it mean?

So much for the read-option I guess. Say hello to a fast paced double tight end NE attack.

Barkley, Foles and Vick.

How does that Sesame Street song go…”One of these things is not like the other, one of these things ain’t kinda the same….”

How is he wasting a roster spot? He is 24 years old, with some NFL experience. And he is only making 400K. I did not want Barkley when the draft began, but I also didn’t think he was going in the 4th round. All I wanted this year was a young QB starting whether it was Foles or somebody else. Thus, start Barkley or Foles, let the young guys compete. And get rid of the old trash thats on this team making more money against the cap. Thats what you call waste on this roster. IM just sick of wasting more time playing these career losers that are not part of the Eagles future. Start the young players and start rebuilding this team right. And real Eagles fan would want that since its in the best interest of the team.

If you think he’s coming here to compete with Foles you are sadly mistaken. Foles joins the list of wasted picks along with Curry , Allen and the rest of those guys. Foles isn’t going to play here unless Vick stinks it up. The baton will be handed from Vick to Barkley that’s what I mean by wasted.

To review….there are 5 QBs on the roster now.

They will not go to camp with 5 Qbs. Can’t go to camp with 5 QBs.

3 of the QBs are under 24. One is 28. One is 33.
4 of them are over 6′ 2″. One is under 6′ tall.
4 of the QBs were signed or drafted by Roseman/Kelly.
One just took a 2/3 pay cut.

It’s also safe to say that D-Jax will have to do a lot more than 40-50 Yard Bomb Routes if he wants to see the Field in this new double TE look attack..
Can he and Maclin be tough and durable enough to run bubble routes, reverses, pitch backs and slants across the middle
The Eagles got 2 big TE targets now (Ertz/Casey) big WR in Benn and the kid they signed from Boston College, so I expect a lot of spread outs, roll outs with shorter passing routes than what the Eagles did under the AR era
Can d-Hax/Naclin adjust will be interesting to see this summer camp and pre-Season for the bombs away air attack is clearly over under Kelly’s philosophy..

Screw Vick who will likely be out of the league in 2 years. Go young, start the rebuild asap. If Barkley struggles as expected for a young player so be it.

As I mentioned the other day, any drafting of a QB automatically means the end of the Mike VIck experiment.

There are 5 qbs
4 were drafted of signed or drfted by Roseman. One was not.
4 are under 30. One is over 30.

The drafting of any QB would have represented the end of Vick….the selection of a statue like Barkley cements it.

2 recently drafter immobile, but accurate QBs?
A West Coast OC

I do not know who will be the starting QB for the Eagles, Foles or Barkley (though I’d now figure it’ll be Foles to at least start the year)…but its pretty obvious what direction the Eagles are moving towards….and that doesn’t include the injury prone mini-man.

And that’s more than enough for me.

But don’t be sad, I’m sure you’ll be able to watch the “experience” run around for Jacksonville, or Winnipeg or somewhere…..

Just not for the Birds. And thank goodness for that.

Another genius with a crystal ball, like i said if Foles is the QB of the future you don’t resign Vick and draft Barkley who by the way won’t beat out Foles this year or next. I can also say Kelly has signed Dixon and drafted Barkley what does your crystal ball say about that?

Vick is still the QB this year. Dunno why u clowns think otherwise. Chip Kelly likes diversity. He likes to have diff styles on his roster and on his coaching staff. He has said this over and over.

“dunno why…”

Obviously you dunno much….We “clowns” understand how NFL teams run. We understand that some times reality can hit you in the face, no matter how much you’d like to ignore it.

Listen Casserly on the network just explained (and you should have listened closely – the message was meant for you) that, with new NFL practice rules, a team can….at best….develop 2 qbs.

There is not enough time to get reps to others. The 3rd Qb goes in every now and then to spell the first 2, but a team can only develop 1 guy….maybe 2 (again, at best)

So…look at the roster.

2 recently drafted immobile QBs (6′ 3″ and 6’5″)…both with potential long term futures.
One 33 yr old injury prone mini-man with no long term future
One 28 yr old guy who knows Kelly
One guy you’ve never heard of.

So….with this being a REBUILIDING program…..it would be stupid to roll with the old man.

Which of those 5 do you start a rebuilding program?

Only an idiot says “How about Vick?”

Eagles QB depth chart in Sept:
1 and 2 – Foles and Barkley
3 Dixon
Practice Squad…whatever that kid’s name is

Winnipeg Blue Bombers QB depth chart in Sept
1 – Buck Pierce
2 – Mike Vick experience.

The Kelly system is something nobody in the NFL understands, Casserly is what 105 years old? Don’t act like you know what goes on when established NFL people have no clue how Chip Kelly runs his operation.

Kelly basically admitted that he ran a complex “run-option” at Oregon, but that the passing game was very basic.

He understands that such a basic passing attack would get eaten up in the NFL.

Hence, the hiring of Shurmer, brought in to create a complex passing attack to go with the rushing attack.

Now….knowing that the game “go fish” is complex for the former superstar, you can begin to understand why two young pocket passers will soon be at the top of the depth chart, whilst the guy you keep panning for will be released before September.
