Ron Jaworski On Chip Kelly’s Offense Vs. NFL Defenses

ChipKellyFootballsESPN NFL analyst and my former teammate with the Eagles, Ron Jaworski weighed in on Chip Kelly’s offense and whether he thought it was going to work in the NFL.  He said categorically, “No”, he didn’t think it would work on the NFL level.

“I just don’t see NFL passing concepts in this offense,” Jaworski said. “It’s a movement offense by the quarterback, off the run action, off the read action — a lot of short, quick passes, dart routes, bubble screens — very few plays down the field with NFL passing concepts.”

“It’s easy to say, ‘Yeah, it worked in college”, Jaworski said.   “Then I looked at a game like Stanford. Stanford, a good defensive football team, shut them down. I hope it works. I like the innovation, but I think it’s going to be very difficult.”

“The NFL is a different league with fast players that have all week to prepare for you,” he said. “At the collegiate level, you have 20 hours to prepare for that Oregon offense. Take out three hours of game time — you’ve got 17 hours to prepare in the course of a week to pratice and prepare for that style of offense. It kills you in college. But in the NFL, these guys work 17 hours a day. A day. Not a week. So there’s no secrets.”

Jaws is right about Kelly’s Oregon attack not having a sophisticated passing attack.  His throwing game in college wasn’t on an NFL level, but that’s why Kelly hired former Cleveland Browns head coach and former Eagles quarterback coach Pat Shurmur to add the West Coast offense system to the offensive attack.  Their passing attack is going to feature concepts and plays from the West Coast offense.

Kelly wisely realized that the passing attack he used in Oregon needed to be drastically improved.  Hiring Shurmur and putting him in charge of the passing game is acknowledging what Jaws said.

In his recent comments on the 97.5, Jaws doesn’t acknowledge this part of Kelly’s plan.  If Kelly were going to challenge NFL defenses with his college passing attack, it would be no contest, but allowing Shurmur to add the West Coast passing attack will benefit from Kelly’s running attack, which I believe will create problems for NFL defenses.

The decision to let Shurmur design the passing attack was an excellent move by Kelly because quarterbacks Michael Vick, Nick Foles as well as the Eagles receivers are already very familiar with the West Coast offense passing concepts, which put the Eagles offense ahead of the game.  Shurmur is putting in an attack that most of the offense is already familiar with.  If Kelly can run the football as effectively as I believe they can, it’s going to open up their passing game and take a lot of the pressure off their quarterbacks.

Personally, I think Kelly’s offense with Shurmur’s West Coast offense additions is going to flourish.

I don’t think Kelly is gonna run Oregons Offense so It’s a moot point. Look for more of a New England style Offense Hence the signing of one TE and the 2nd Round selection of another TE. We might see a few elements of the offense, but with Shurmur and what Chips reputation of being an intelligent football person……I see him adapting and forming an Innovative but more classic looking pro offense.

Again,

Kelly started 11 different QBs in 6 years at Oregon. With a 12 game sched. Half being creampuffs.

We saw what happened to RGIII in a pure read-option attack.

The increased incidence of injury in a system like thins should be the #1 indicator that it won’t work over a sustained period of time int he NFL. I think (hope) Kelly knows this.

Hmm 15 yr Pro QB, Started a Superbowl, 80 league MVP, 20 years with ESPN, Has an Office at NFL Films, MNF Anouncer, Has own Radio SHow, Owner/GM of a Arena league team in Philly….Jaws knows football, to toss his opinion away like that is foolish. He isn’t always right but his opinion on especially the offense should be respected.

While we all have opinions, some people have a lot more informed opinion and those you should value or at least consider.

I lost all respect for him when he threw 3 interceptions to Rod Martin in the Superbowl. He may know football, but he stunk when it mattered most.

1 Int was on a Deflection off hands of the Receiver, 1 was just a great grab by Rod Martin and 1 was a terrbile pass by Jaworski
Game was lost when penalty was called on long TD Pass in the 1st Quarter that was called back for a Holding Call.. Killed early momentum, and then the Eagles Pass-Rush was non-existent and gave Jim “Cement Shoes” Plunkett all day long to throw from a Clean Pocket.. The Eagles were emotionally spent after beating arch-rival Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game.. They shot their wad and had nothing left for the Super Bowl Game which was a mark of the inexperience of HC Dick Vermeil at the time.. Team was so friggin’ tight, that they flat out couldn’t play well and it was the entire Team..

100% correct Paulman….Not to mention the FN defense giving up a long bomb to branch and an 80 yard screen to a 3rd string HB named King…..Enough about that debacle.

It’s still the game that hurts me the most to this day. I was young (9) and excited. Seeing the look on my dad’s face as the day unraveled still hurts more than losing to the Rams, Tampa, Carolina, Arizona and New England in those big games.

I thnk Kelly/Shurmur’s System will be a lot more like Stanford’s System than the New England Patriots System..
Eagles will use more 2 Man Back-Fields, More Double TE Sets and some Triple TE with more of an emphasis on Power Running between tthe Tackles and less 3-4 WR Sets or empty Backfields that PAtriots use.
Chip Kelly Coached against Stanford the last 5-7 Years and knows their System and Physical Style very well and knows that it can be successful at
the NFL Level..

This is funny, I happen to agree with Jaws on this he has to make some adjustments. Surprise surprise this is also some Vinnie and I agree on if Kelly runs his Oregon offense exclusively he is going to burn through some QB’s. Lastly Jaws opinion is to be respected and he is on record saying that Vick should thrive under Kelly so what do we make of that?

You right Big he stated before Chip was hired that Vick was perfect for his Duck Offense. Now after studying that Offense for a long period he has determined that offense won’t work in the NFL. So if you change the Offense you use a QB that best suits your changes. Yes Jaws made both statements but the pro Vick statement was made before Chip was even Hired. Also every talking head in the league is assuming Chip is gonna run something like His Duck Offense. I don’t really believe that, but who the hell am I lol.

I hope he doesn’t Xevious because Vinnie is right on this one. We will see the parade of QB’s if the offense consists of just read option and little else.

If Kelly were stupid enought to run the Read-Option Offense with Vick at the Helm, the only Duck’s that would be around would be “Duck Soup” with Vick’s Face on the Soup Can and BIllboard’s around Philly…

If this ends up, like I inevitably think it’s going to, Kelly will be out of the league, as a laughing stock, by the 2016 season. He’s a gimmicky coach, with zero NFL experience, at all, who thinks he’s going to reinvent the NFL. His defense will be burnt out by game 3-5, because of all the 3 & outs, & fast plays. It’s a fact, that mostly all of the time, the team that leads the game with time of possession, wins the game. His stupid, gimmick, fast paced offense, is as further from that, as can be.

Sick and tired of the sterotyping of Kelly’s offense….

Its faced pace with the goal to create mismatches and get players in space with the ball…..doesnt matter the “scheme”….he is going to spread the field and let the players matchup and make some plays…..thats it..sick of the option read, oregon offense comments….
