Flyers Sign Prospect Taylor Leier to ELC

leier-vs-kelownajpgLast Thursday, I made recommendations for the five “players to watch” at this year’s Philadelphia Flyers rookie camp. The second player on that list, 19 year-old left winger Taylor Leier, was signed to a three-year entry level contract by the organization early on Monday.

According to Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly, Leier’s contract is worth $2.56 million or a cap hit of $853,000. Leier will return to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL this fall to continue playing top six minutes as he continues to improve on his game.

Leier’s talent ceiling is unknown at this point, but it isn’t likely to pencil him as a top six forward at the NHL level. A conservative estimate would be a speedy, defensive-minded third line winger with a scoring touch.

Leier was drafted by the Flyers in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He joins fellow draftees Scott Laughton and Anthony Stolarz as a prospect under contract while only Fredric Larsson must be signed by June to retain his rights. The organization would have had three more years with Larsson had he remained in Sweden, but the organization helped him find a home in the USHL to further his development in North America. Barring a major setback this season, Larsson will likely be signed.

Of the remaining three 2012 draftees, defensemen Shayne Gostisbehere and Reece Willcox have additional college years while defenseman Valeri Vasiliev told Russian reporters that it is his desire to play at least three KHL seasons before considering coming abroad.

Leier built upon his morning fortunes by scoring the lone goal in the Flyers’ annual rookie game with the Washington Capitals on Monday afternoon. Stolarz and AHL prospect Carsen Chubak split the goaltending duties and shared the shutout. Defenseman Mark Alt left the game early with a concussion after being run into the boards by Capitals 2012 1st round prospect Tom Wilson.

Hopefully many remember this day for Leier’s fortunes and not for the injury to Alt in an exhibition game.
