Thoughts From Eagles-Broncos

PeytonManning1Another Poor Coaching Performance By Kelly

A lot of people (myself included) expected the Eagles to lose to the Denver Broncos.

But we didn’t expect it to be this bad.

At the very least, the expectation was that the Eagles would be able to score enough points to make the score look somewhat respectable.

Instead, the team put on a disgraceful showing, and there were breakdowns in all three facets of the game.

Offensively, Kelly’s much-hyped offense scored just 13 points while the game mattered and there were drive-killing drops and penalties. Defensively there was no resistance, and no quality plan of attack to even slow Peyton Manning down. Special teams were unfocused, and had several breakdowns that led to two Denver touchdowns.

The Eagles were sloppy, unfocused, and the minute the game began to get out of hand, they quit. As soon as the Broncos went up 28-13 in the third quarter, the majority of the team checked out mentally.

What did Kelly and his staff work on during their 12 days of preparation? For a coach who has been billed by many as a revolutionary, up-and-coming thinker oozing with innovation and creativity, surely Kelly should have been able to get a much more respectable showing out of his team than what he got today with an extra five days of preparation?

Kelly himself looked as lifeless and defeated on the sidelines as his players did on the field.

Manning And Broncos Too Much For Eagles To Handle

It was completely unrealistic and unreasonable to ever believe that the Eagles would have had any business being in this game. Manning and the Broncos were destined to give this team a beating.

Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos played out exactly the way most people expected it to.

We knew before the game that Peyton Manning and the Broncos presented a terrible mismatch for the Eagles. It came as no surprise that he marched his offense up and down the field throughout the game with Billy Davis’ defense offering little to no resistance along the way.

Manning was able to pick and choose his targets throughout the game. If the Eagles tried to take away the deep threat, the veteran quarterback was always able to check it down to a tight end or running back.

Manning ran slow, methodical drives that wore the Eagles’ defense down. By the third quarter, the defense was completely spent and unable to put up any kind of fight against one of the league’s most efficient offenses.

Billy Davis and his defense gave up over 400 yards and 42 points through just the first three quarters. If Manning and the Denver offense went all out for the entire game, they could have easily lit this defense up for 60. The 52 points that the Broncos scored today was their highest total in franchise history. It was also the most points that the Eagles have allowed in a game in over 40 years.

The best that this defense managed was to come up with a hollow three-and-out on the second Denver possession. Manning missed a wide open Eric Decker that would have been a touchdown on the first play, and missed an open Wes Welker on third down after the receiver slipped at the beginning of his route.

Well done, Billy.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • There was a great deal of confusion on the second drive on a 3rd and 4 deep in Denver territory. Vick and the entire offense stood around looking puzzled at the calls coming in from the sidelines, and the Eagles were forced to burn a timeout.
  • Following the timeout, there was a terrible drop by Brent Celek. Vick put the ball on the money for his tight end, but Celek was unable to complete the catch and forced the Eagles to settle for three.
  • Why in the world is LeSean McCoy still in the game in the fourth quarter when the team is down by 36? Kelly keeping his star in the game for a lost cause is a page out of Andy Reid’s playbook.
  • DeSean Jackson was a complete non-factor. The Eagles’ top wideout was shutdown by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who allowed only two catches and 34 yards to go to Jackson. DRC broke up a touchdown pass to Jackson in the second quarter.
  • Lane Johnson called for holding in the redzone on the Eagles’ second possession. The penalty contributed to the team being forced to settle for three.
  • Evan Mathis was called for a hold that negated a reception from DeSean Jackson that would have gone for a first-down
  • Denver defensive coordinator made an effort to limit LeSean McCoy, holding the top running back to 73 rushing yards. Del Rio had his defensive backs match up with the Eagles receivers in single coverage throughout the game, and the Denver defense had little trouble taking away the Eagles’ receivers.
  • Chris Polk picked up a carry on the goalline, and scored his first career touchdown. Polk saw some more action in garbage time, finishing with three carries for 33 yards and two catches for 19 yards.
  • Bryce Brown got his heaviest workload of the season. Brown had a reception on a screen play for 35 yards that brought the Eagles down to the goalline. Brown finished with 60 total yards.
  • We had James Casey sighting in the first quarter, the $12 million dollar tight end caught a 12-yard pass in first quarter.
  • Nick Foles ran a touchdown drive in garbage time, hooking up with Jeff Maehl for a score.

Defense

  • In addition to being overwhelmed by the Denver passing attack, the Eagles also couldn’t stop the run today. Knowshown Moreno ripped off 78 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries.
  • Bradley Fletcher had a rough day. Fletcher was abused regularly in coverage, and drew several penalties. The only chance the former Ram had today was to grab jerseys and hope that the refs wouldn’t notice.
  • Fletcher Cox has neutral zone infraction on 3rd and 4 on the first Denver drive, giving the Broncos an easy first down and setting up Manning touchdown to Wes Welker.
  • DeMeco Ryans finished with 12 tackles, but that was more a product of the veteran linebacker spending most of the day chasing Denver receivers after the catch rather than him making plays.
  • I actually thought Earl Wolff had a decent performance in his first start. He at least made a couple of nice tackles.
  • Before the half, Manning hit Decker on a deep post, beating Cary Williams for a 50-yard play.
  • Vinny Curry was active for the second straight game, but didn’t see any action until the game was out of hand.
  • Cedric Thornton got the team’s lone sack.

Special Teams

  • The special teams gave up a punt return for a touchdown to Trindon Holliday after the Eagles’ first field goal. Former Oregon Duck Jeff Maehl was manhandled on the play, creating a lane for the electric Holliday to strike.
  • Late in the game, the Eagles allowed Denver to block a punt and return it for a score.
  • Alex Henery wasn’t given the opportunity to kick a 56-yard field goal before the half. Henery’s misses in the last few weeks have made it difficult for the coaching staff to trust him.

Final Thoughts

Last week I stated that Chip Kelly’s challenge was going to be to keep this team’s spirits up while going through adversity.

The Eagles are on a rough three-game losing streak. They’ve blown winnable games against the Chargers and Chiefs, and were obliterated by the Broncos today. The players, who were pretty high on themselves after surprising the Washington Redskins, have gone silent. Kelly, who isn’t used to losing, is now dealing with the realities that he’s got a lot to learn about being a successful coach in this league.

Its not time to become overly concerned about this team just yet, but the next two weeks are extremely important for Kelly and the Eagles. They’ll be facing two winless teams with looming matches against the Giants and Buccaneers.

If the Eagles don’t get things turned around against the Giants, things could really start to get ugly for the first year coach.

The Year is already lost..
I see winnable games the shitty NFC East Teams and TB Bucs/Raiders and that’s about it.. Are they going to slow down the Packers, Lions, Bears Offenses..
I don’t think so.. HC Jelly Kelky F’d up the opening 3 Games in 11 days in my opinion, where they needed to be 2-1

The season is slipping away. I didn’t have real high hopes coming into the season, but you would like to see the team improve each week.

The special teams are going backwards right now.The offense looked demoralized in the second half. I also think some of these guys are too quick to give-up.

Kelly has to keep this team focused.

Frank, my sentiments exactly. All I’ve seen is an offense score progressively fewer points each week and a defense give up progressively more. Three straight years of lost NFL seasons. Pathetic.

Denny, here you and all the haters go again. People, it’s a first year HC who inherited a 4-12 team that was worse then that record. Brent Celek is horrible! He’s been doing this for three years now, Chip has inherited a team that was so bad that he couldn’t possibly get rid of everyone in one year, were playing without a legit number two receiver and we just became the first team in history to pass for a 1,000 yards n run for 750, the ponts would be there if not for the drops n our rookiie making some rookie mistakes, We played a good first half of football, that’s saying a lot against the team we played, I don’t know where your saying Chip coached a bad game Denny, I wish I could of asked that question at halftime, I’d bet anything you would of said Chip is doing a good job. Bottom like is this, are D is Horrible n needs a complete overhaul from top to bottom, it’s plain n simple, you can’t have players like the ones we have n blame it on the coach, if we had the D Andy has in he had ours, we’d be 3-1 right now n he would b 1-3. It’s all about the personal n right now we don’t have it on that end. But I will say this, were winning our next 5 n we will b in first.

Chip sucked …please …if not for a dropped touchdown (another wide open bronco) at the half …we’d have been buried sooner ….the wide outs don’t show any desire to fight for position ….running which I favor is almost always a stretch with very little 2 or 3 tight ends ..we paid a free agent tight end a shit ton of dough ,where is he ? Boykin was commended for great effort saving a touchdown last week on a hustle play ,today he was undressed from the slot (not his best spot ) defensive coach ever hear of pulling a guy ? Instead we from a coaching standpoint seemingly have no adjustments …Kelly will feel his way but one things for certain he just played the best team he’ll see all season ..

Denny, Are you serious? This has nothing to do with Chip and everything to do with a lack of talent in the skill positions, putting up major yardage with a horrible TE, no legit number two receiver which helps the other team take out our number one reciever and we still set a record for passing n running yards after four games, again, I see positives and a bright future with Chip, once he has all his type of players on both sides of the ball you’ll be changing your tune about him.

So Denny, him being a first year coach doesn’t mean anything? What would you of been writing about Bill Walsh after his first year when he went 2-14? Probably something like this, West coast offense? What is this guy thinking? does he think he’s smarter then everyone else, it’s not gonna work, their going to figure it out and he will be back to being an assistant very soon. If it wasn’t those words it would of been close.

Denny, don’t waste your breath with the brain-damaged, lemmings on here. All they have is excuses, delusions, short memory, & irrational arguments! Chip Kelly, according to Chip Kelly, has final decisions on ALL roster moves! So, why is the Secondary still atrocious? Why didn’t we upgrade the WR position? Why aren’t the wasted 2nd round luxury TE, & wasted free agent Casey being used? THERE ARE NO excuses, to this team, being this bad, & not ONE position being upgraded in the off-season! Conveniently, NOW he’s a 1st year head coach, when last week, he was “The genius savior.” GTFO!!!!!

Denny, again, your looking at Bill Walsh POST first season, I ask you what you would of wrote week to week during his first season when he went 2-14, you know, the season he didn’t have all HIS players. Besides that, yes I did say that Chip would use different sets to make things work, again, moving up n down the field isn’t the problem, were getting yards at a record pace, we only had two three n outs all season, the problem is drops n penalties, thats on the players not the coach.

I’m not saying the coaching isn’t making mistakes but too many points have been left on the field through drops, penalties and missed field goals, you can’t blame coaching on that, those things are the reason were not 3-1 today. As for Walsh? I was around when he went 2-14, they all said his system was a joke, HE said, once I get the players I need that fit the system you will see that the system works, the rest is history! All I’m saying, we have to do the same with Chip before we can make any judgments or comparisons about his style of play, the bad coaching calls he’s making can be corrected and as of now they are not the reason were losing.

The season pivots as Vick is injured and foles ,who reads and releases ,will create drives…this team offensively was maddening ,as it scored in video game fashion and put a spent defense on the field in weeks 2 and 3.what was the defensive game plan today ? There was no blitz pressure and soft zone on the outside which I think a pony leaguer knows plays right into Peyton’s wheelhouse.Discipline was devoid throughout …special teams …pass rush …soft Pillowy coverages …This team. Needed an ass whipping ,but not by the broncos from the owner who is paying these chumps. We haven’t won at home since ….can’t remember when ..Giants ,Eagles talk about swampland….

Time to start Playing the young guys and if the Esglez went I to the 2013 Season thinking and acting they would be better by 2014/2015,
Instead we gave a list Season in 2913 as a ie or yes and gearedx would happen.. Sometimes I even hate myself when I am right s out this chump Franchise.. They are, what I thought and said that are, which us a bottom 1/4 Team in the NFL.. No surprises here..

Why are most of you guys acting surprised? We knew this was a rebuilding year. Period. Most of us felt optimistic we would be an elite team but with a fist year head coach, a whole new Offensive Staff, a new DC, a whole new defensive staff, and a revamped defense, it’s just nearly impossible. To put the icing on the cake, we do not have the future QB on our roster. Chip Kelly did an excellent job this entire offseason. The draft, Training camp, and the way he has ran this team has been very solid. He has been doing the best with what he has. Chips taking over a sinking ship for christ sake! It’s going to take time. Give this mean 3-4 season before we judge him. Were 1-3 and in second place in the East with the Giants and Bucs coming up. I see us winning both and being 3-3. Dallas has Denver next weeek. If we beAT the Giants, and the Cowboys win we are already tied for 1st place.

This team will get better as the season goes on, and so will Chip. We faced the hardest team on our scheduel already. As a team, and as coaching staff this team has learned alot and will continue to adapt and overcome the learning comes of this new Offense and defense. It sucks were 1-3, but we very easily could be 3-1. I still have us going 8-8 or 9-7 at best and taking the division.. Making the playoffs our first year would be HUGE for this rebuiling team, and a huge learning exp for Chip

Wouldn’t help the team. NO Defense, NO other WR option other than Jackson, no Heart.

We have seen when Vick has time he can be just as productive as any QB in the league. If he had as many options as Manning, he would be dangerous, and without that he is still better than Bridgewater – who I like, but needs more time, coaching, and experience, and Boyd – who I don’t think is all that.

gmc, it wouldn’t help them, but I guarantee, that’s exactly who they’re going to draft. I guarantee, they draft one, in the 1st 2 rounds. We wind up with either Johnny Football, Bridgewater, Mariotta, Boyd, or Miller. I personally like that Hundley kid. If he comes out, I’d like to grab him in the 2-3 rounds. But, they f^#@ed the pooch this year, NOT upgrading the secondary, via FA & the draft. What makes you think, this inept regime will do any different?

You know me DCar, I only post what I would do brother.

But, if they did draft one, that would be admitting that drafting Barkley was a mistake. Howie has too much pride not to save face. My point is how much better would any of them be than Vick? Who has needed time to get acclimated to Kelly’s System. A rookie isn’t going to pick it up any faster to give us more positive results.

If they did are they going to address the biggest issue on this team; The Defense? Are trades possible to attain a Josh Gordon?, resign Maclin? Sign some impact free agents like Charles Tillman, Malcolm Jenkins, or Jairus Byrd? How about drafting an Austin Seferian- Jenkins TE, from Univ. Washington – who is more like Jimmy Graham, than Zach Ertz, then trade Zach Ertz, for something that could help us, while his hype is still some what high?

There are more important things to address on this team then QB.

If you can get Hundley in the 2nd round, you have to take him, but I think that he is gonna be better than everyone on that list except for maybe Bridgewater. I think that Mariotta, Boyd and Miller do not project well to the NFL. Those guys remind me a lot of Vince Young. No thanks.

They need another WR opposite DJax and it would be great to get someone that was big. I think that Ertz will be servicable and you will have to take Sefarian-Jenkins pretty high next year to get him and I would rather that they went with an impact defensive player like Barr from UCLA.

Does any of it matter though really? This is a big GD mess and you have to ask yourself, how did the team get here? There is a severe lack of talent that wasn’t addressed very well in the off-season. Whoever made the decisions needs to go. Effin Carey Williams, Fletcher? Casey? Chung? Phillips? Also, Billy Davis is frickin killin me. Why would they hire this guy and why would he try to turn a team with a bunch of 4-3 players into a 3-4? As a coach don’t you have to put your players in a position to succeed? They are currentl

Bugs, I’m not sure Hundley is an NFL QB either.

I would trade Zach Ertz.

I want to see Anthony Barr in some of these Senior Bowls. He may MAY be a player. It’s hard to say, and I am not high on a lot of Pac 12 players.

I agree they need another option at WR to play next to Jackson. What would you think of Josh Gordon in that role, and Maclin on a reasonable contract Bugs?

I know that I have a strong slant towards UCLA players, but I think that both of these guys will prove themselves over the rest of the season. UCLA has road games against Oregon and Stanford, plus they get Wash and ASU.

The reason why I am so high on Barr though is that he is so disruptive in a primarily offensive conference. He pretty much won the Nebraska game on his own. I understand that it is not the SEC, but I am not going to discount him because of that.

I think that Josh Gordon is perfect for that spot. If they can trade for him, then they should do it now. Honestly, they should try to get both of those guys and then you could be set for next year with DJax, Morgan and Maclin. That is a pretty good 3 at a very reasonable price. Then you could really move DJax all over the field or Maclin can play in the slot. I think that he could be very effective there.

They could cut cooper and Avant too. Those guys do nothing for me at all. And then they could focus on purely defense in the draft.

Trading Brandon Graham, Todd Herremans, Trent Cole, DeMeco Ryans, Cary Williams, Zach Ertz, and Bryce Brown only in a trade for Josh Gordon, should reap us more talent, and draft picks.

I’ll reserve FULL judgement of draft picks till we get closer to Bowl season.

I like Avant as well

I feel you bruh, but we know is the right moves, & what these inept turds do, is 2 different stories. I do not want any parts of Gordon, he’s 1 strike away from a year long suspension. Kid is immature, & has a history of drug use, & it’s not just weed. I believe, if I remember correctly, that he was caught with syrup in college. No thanks. We have enough problems. I would love Tillman & Byrd. Tillman, more than likely, will be franchised. I wouldn’t wait until FA, I’d do everything I could now, to get Byrd. I don’t care if he has plantar fascia issues, he’ll be fine. Anyways, I’d take him blind, in a wheelchair, over these turds!

If that is the case with Gordon, it shouldn’t take much to pry him from the Browns. I’m not scared off by his past.

The Bears, are going to have to make a decision on whether they will franchise Tillman, and lose Peppers, because his contract kicks up next year, as well as Jay Cutlers contract being up this year. or …………….

They could cut both Tillman, and Peppers, and sign Cutler to a reasonable contract, and replace both of them in the draft or free agency…….They have a problem.

I think the Eagles need more superstar veteran leadership in the secondary, linebacker, and on the DLine, along with better talent selected in the draft.

Eh..

The Maclin injury hurt. It was foolish not to replace him. Those foolish chickens are coming home to roost.

I expected them to be 2-2 here…with that siad Tampa Bay and the Giants are up. We win those games, all is well. And with Dallas loss to the Chargers, we are no worse off than before we played the Broncos.

Maclin did hurt, but has been gone since the first week of Camp so there has been plenty of time to adjust and develop games plans utilizing other Receivers but Coach Genuis Kelly has failed to do so..
As I mentioned a couple of weeks back..
Vick, McCoy & D-Hax will all put mup #’s in this high-tempo Pffense but Yards gained are meaningless if you can’t Score TD’s which the Eagłes are struggling to finish Drives off.. They are 1-3 and appear to be unable to stop anyvopposing Offense that has a healthy, decent QB ..
Somehow, someway if they can best the Giants/TB Bucs,
They will be back in the hunt in a very weak NFC and a Conference that has the Giants/Redskins, Falcons, Vikings All stuggling also..

Lets see, all of the off-season moves-
Kelly hiring & staff- Hired a college coach, with ZERO NFL experience, & was over-hyped, over loved, just because he wasn’t the Hindenburg. The staff he hired, is a Hodge-podge of failures, & inexperience.
Changing the DF from 4-3 to a 3-4, & keeping 4-3 players (Graham, Cole, Ryans, Kendricks, Curry), & forcing them to play positions that they can’t.
FA-
Re-sign Vick- Mistake (If we are truly rebuilding, as some suggest). Already knew what we had.
Barwin- Has been just solid.
Casey- Signed as an ultimate, resilient, jack-of-all trades HB/TE, & can’t even get on the field.
Cary Williams- Horrible CB; Loud mouth; Penalty machine; Ranked bottom 1/3 of NFL in 2012; Was overpaid.
Fletcher- Injury risk; No better than a dime/ nickel CB.
Phillips & Phillips- LOL!!!!
Chung- Can’t cover/ tackle; Lost his job in NE; No better than a STer.
Sopoaga- Was a rotational player in SF; Softest Samoan, NT I’ve ever seen; Invisible, & has done zippo.
Benn & Momah- Major injury risks; Signed, & over-hyped to take over 3-4 WR spots.
Draft-
Knowing going in, that they were barren in the secondary, LB & WR they drafted-
1- Johnson- 2 years at RT, after converting from QB/ TE. Reach, mistake pick.
2- Ertz- Luxury, reach pick, that isn’t even playing
3- Logan- Over-drafted by 2-3 rounds; Rotational, 4-3 DT, that only was solid at stopping the run; Not a playmaker, that doesn’t fit in a 3-4 DF.
4- Barkley- Another USC, disappointment, stiff.
5- Wolff- Too small.
7- Kruger- Drafted for name/ bloodlines only.
7A- Poyer- Fell for a reason.
7B- King- Who cares.
That’s why we are now 1-3, with even more ?????’s & holes. We wasted an entire off-season, with a huge chance to exponentially upgrade our roster, very quickly. FA & the draft, was loaded with upgrades at secondary, LB, & WR, & we wound up with not one of them!!!!! BTW, why haven’t we at least brought in S Kerry Rhodes (gay, or not, who cares, he’s a good safety), NT Sione Po’uha, 5 tech. Richard Seymour, NT Shaun Cody? ILB Larry Grant’s (can’t do any worse than Kendricks & Ryans) suspension ends this week? Sign him! They’re all veterans that are better than trash truck juice smelling slop, we’re running out there. Why haven’t we claimed DeShawn Shead off of Seattle’s practice squad? I don’t care if Byrd has had issues with his Plantar Fascia, he instantly upgrades this secondary, now, & the future. Do not let him get to FA, this off-season. Those of us, that weren’t living in La-La land, that were claiming 9-11 wins, knew they weren’t going to be good, but this is embarrassing, & should have, & could have been avoided. All of you nitwit, excuse makers, can spew all of the verbal diarrhea you want, but facts, are the facts!

I really believe this franchise is cursed!!!!!

Billy Freakin Davis?

Who believed that he would all of a sudden become a good defensive coordinator after failing every chance he got in the NFL?

This guy blows big time!!!!

You would think after the Juan Castillo debacle this franchise would have turned to a top defensive guy but no, we pick up bum ass Billy Davis to bring in a so called Hybrid 3-4.

What the hell is that?

I seen linebackers on wide receivers all night instead the linebackers playing downhill to disrupt manning.

What the hell Demeco Ryans doing lined up against receivers?

where is the so called exotic blitzes we were told he brought in from his Steeler days?

Where’s the disguised coverages that confuses QB?

….And please don’t blame it on the personel……No matter what linebacker you could bring in, they would have no business downfield against speedy receivers.

This is a flawed scheme!!!!!!!

Chip Kelly need to send a meesage to his team right now by admitting the hiring was a mistake and fire Billy Davis right now!

Go back to a regular 4-3 base in front to make it simpler for the secondary.

No more damn prevent 3 deep shells giving opposing team’s receivers 10 yard cushions from line of scrimmage,

CHALLENGE SOME DAMN BODY!

You can’t just sit 10 yards off while a receiver gets the opportunity to run full speed into wide holes in a zone.

Jam their asses at the line!!!!!

Evert team uses the 3 on one side bunch package against our bum ass defensive coordinator and not once do he tell his secondary to just pick one man a play him instead of waiting for them to set a pick to let the under receiver run free.

Someone should be on the under receiver before the play develops.

If we can see this then what the hell is this bum telling his players to do?

Fire him now!!!!!

Don’t buy the excuse that the right players are not here on defense yet!

Billy Davis failed before the Eagles with teams that had proper 3-4 personnel.

FIRE BILLY DAVIS NOW!!!!!!!

Celek is here because Ertz isn’t good enough. Plain and simple. I understand he dropped a pass, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t valuable to this team. He is also a better blocking TE than Ertz, because with the O-Lines deficiencies, we need a TE that can actually Block, and he is more effective than Ertz, and a better PRO in those areas.

Ertz has what, 4 Games in the NFL under his belt.. You are misguided a bit Cliff about his Abilitiy to become a good NFL TE,
it’s not going to happen in Year 1 for very few TE’s make that quick of an adjustment out of the gate.. Give him time, but he is a receiver first and not a Traditional End-Line TE and doesn’t have the strength to play a Traditional TE spot, more of a in-motion, split out wide type of TE…

Too early to completely bail on a new coach, but the concerns that many expressed on here are coming true and exposed for the whole NFL to see.

Kelly is a smart and innovative coach, but Saban and Spurrier are also smart and successful college coaches who were not able to bring that success to the NFL game. Kelly is looking less and less confident on the sidelines. He needs to evaluate his system pretty quick or this will quickly turn into a disaster instead of just a rebuilding year.

To all of the fans who jumped on any other fan for voicing concern about this team as being negative, I hope you all (Skayne are you out there?) understand that this team is far for the finished product you thought we had, and there are some real issues that need to get resolved, and better personnel obtained for this team to move forward.

I hope that Roseman is held responsible for some very poor choices, but at this point I doubt he will. My fear is that the team will quickly turn on Kelly and his new philosophies and the season will quickly become a death spiral.

Good Monday morning Eagles fans. Let’s hope that someone on this team has some pride and the ability to show leadership. Clearly they are not all on the same page, and something needs to change.

No doubt DCar, Roseman is great for getting credit for a move directly after it is made, but given the eye of history, his moves have yet to be productive for this team. He has had the benefit of some high draft picks, but has yet to get a player that is even at a Probowl level, yet alone All-Pro. I hope that Tom Gamble will take more of the leadership in guiding this team in personnel matters, but I really cannot say if that will be the case.

The Eagles are now 2-14 since their 3-1 start last year. That’s under two different coaches, but 31 current players were on the roster for at least part of last season, so for them, losing has become a habit. It’s like a cancer fellas, you have to remove it if you want to get better! “What’s happened to Vick and this Offense that is supposed to be a unstoppable?”

That offense never existed, and it was media hype…It looked OK in the Washington game, but unstoppable?

There are already problems in the locker room: I hate to make blanket statements, but this Eagle team has some bad apples left over from the Reid regime, and bought a bunch of over-priced mercenaries on the free agent market…Most of these guys just make too much money and are too jaded to buy into gimmick offenses and other junk from an unproven college coach…What do you think someone like Jason Peters thinks about the ‘read option’ offense, especially if he has to quickly line up for 50 plays a half?…C’mon now!

In addition, the ‘D’ stinks and you can’t win in the NFL with cut rate, mercenary ‘D’…That is the major problem…

And how many players on this team have actually won an NFL playoff game except for Vick long ago, Celek (maybe?), and a couple of the free agent mercs on the defense?…This team doesn’t know how to win.

After 4 games:

zac ertz 5 catches for 112

tyler eifert 12 catches for 159

Dwayne allen 10 catches for 77

coby fleener 13 catches for 139

rob gronkowski 6 catches for 62

Tony Gonzalez 7 catches for 89 yards

So I’m not that worried about Ertz at this point. Might be better if he had a competent qb throwing the ball.

Ertz sucks, has nothing to do with Vick. Who threw the ball to him, for him to have 112 yards? Why hasn’t he supplanted Celek, and started for the Birds Yet?

This isn’t Stanford. He has to earn his playing time. NFL Coaches give less then a darn what he did in College. Why doesn’t GMCliff rank 32 TE’s so we can figure out what his parameters are for sucks

Uh, Yeah ..Right,… anyway. I don’t like any of those black TE’s you mentioned they suck too. I stated Pettegrew sucked the year he was drafted.

This is why I don’t like you. I am nothing close to a racist being of Black, White, and Indian descent. I call them as I see them. If he turns out to be a good player, then I would admit I was wrong, but if I am correct, then you continue to kiss my ass.

My definition is can he play the position or not? He is completely overhyped, for nothing; he is an average overhyped Stanford product. What has he done to make you believe he will be more than he displays himself to be?

Gronkowski, Hernandez, Witten, Heath Miller, Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, and Vernon Davis, all started the year they were drafted. Why can’t he supplant Celek? Why is he barely on the field except for special teams? Maybe you should, wake up, and revisit your standards of who sucks.

We weren’t talking about any of them to ignore them. We were talking specifically about Zach Ertz right? What do they have to do with his lack of?

He hasn’t supplanted Celek yet because he is in his 4th game.

When are you guys going to get the whole, “it takes a season” business (except for RBs)

All I did was show that a bunch of other TEs (many successful) have had the same sort of start over the first four games of their careers.

“where do the stats come from”???? These are their stats over their first 4 games respectively.

I am not saying Ertz is going to be a star. I don’t know that yet. I figure he’ll steadily improve as the season moves along. That is all anyone should ask for.

And its all anyone should ask for if (when) the Eagles move to youth at the QB, or any other, position. All I’m looking for is improvement. Not immediate pro-bowl impact.

If the arguement is that TE should not have been addressed (D instead), then fine…that’s valid….but don’t call him a bust because he has 5 catches after 4 games.

And also don’t be suprised when the Eagles go “O” heavy again at next year’s draft.

gmcliff

October 1, 2013 6:49 am

MY POINT VINNIE IS HE IS NOTHING SPECIAL TO BE ANOINTING HIM.

In those 4 games what has he shown, that makes you confident that he will be everything you claim he will be? Also, in those 4 games an countless practices, he has shown himself to be lacking in comparison to Celek. Could it be he was never all that he was hyped to be? What has he done to improve the team?

You can’t base your opinion on the assumption he will recapture the same achievement he did in college. Your hoping he does, I haven’t seen anything pre-season or mid season that suggest he is special.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — A look at snaps played by New England Patriots defenders in Sunday’s 23-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while analyzing what it means (as charted in press box, small margin for error):

S Devin McCourty – 71-of-71
CB Aqib Talib – 70-of-71
DE Chandler Jones – 69-of-71
LB Dont’a Hightower – 64-of-71
LB Jerod Mayo – 63-of-71
DE Rob Ninkovich – 63-of-71
CB Alfonzo Dennard – 59-of-71
S Steve Gregory – 58-of-71
DT Vince Wilfork – 51-of-71
DT Tommy Kelly – 40-of-71
LB Brandon Spikes – 37-of-71
CB Kyle Arrington – 34-of-71
DT Joe Vellano – 27-of-71
CB Logan Ryan – 20-of-71
DE Michael Buchanan – 19-of-71
LB Jamie Collins – 18-of-71
DE Jake Bequette – 11-of-71
S Duron Harmon – 6-of-71
LB Dane Fletcher – 1-of-71

(Penalties included.)

ANALYSIS: The biggest takeaway was the presence of top draft pick Jamie Collins (52nd overall) in the sub defense for the first extended time this season. Collins had played just six defensive snaps through the first two games, so his 18-snap total versus the Buccaneers marks a season high. Collins’ presence in sub gives the Patriots some more speed in that package.{ Although getting the starting role over Hightower,} of Collins’ 18 snaps, 15 came in the second half, including eight on the final drive, which adds some context to the numbers. But from this viewpoint, seeing Collins in a sub defense (over Dont’a Hightower and Brandon Spikes) reflects that he has gained some more trust from the coaching staff in terms of his ability to grasp some of the team’s complex schemes. …

Lane Johnson vs Ansah ( Ansah playing better but took a concussion )
Ertz vs Jamie Collins (Ertz in a land slide with 3 big receptions over 25yd
Logan vs Wreh Wilson (Logan is playing and Wreh Wilson zero snaps)
Barkley vs Montari Hughes ( even neither player has had a snap yet)
Wolff vs Washington ( Wolff in a landslide Washington has zero snaps)

Seems like your the only one “Over-Hyping” him Cliff,
Seems like you have a Habit over Over-Hyping and Over-Expecting all the Eagles Draft PIcks more so than anyone else, is this to prove that are a a genius evaluator or something …
I state Every Draft Season that only a handful of Rookies make a real impact in the NFl during their Rookie Season and what occured last Season with QB;s Luck, RGIII, Wilson was an anomaly and doesn’t occur that often.. About the only Rookies you see making an impact are the Players Drafted by Poor Teams and get to Start right awate and even half those times, they struggle to adjust to the Pro Game where it simpley takes some time, good Coaching and a System that’s a fit for that Players SKill Set ..

I stated that this 2013 Draft have very few impactful players like Z Ansah, D Jordon, CB D Millner, WR C Patterson, and the Top OL (Fisher, Joeckel & Jonson & Fluker)
Probably the biggest Playmakers from this Years Draft so far
are RB G Bernard of the Bengals, WR D Hopkins of the Texans, Safety Eric Reid of 49ers , Safety K VIccaro of the Saints, LB Jarvis Jones, WR Rovert Woods of the Bills but still, may of these players are Rotational Players still learning their way around their Teams and the NFL …

Why did Tony Gonzalez split reps his entire rookie year with the incomperable Ted Popson?

Why is Eifert getting only 1/3 of the TE catches in Cinci?

Because rookies don’t just come in and take over positions (except at RB) and dominate in their first year. Of course there are exceptions, but that’s the general rule.

I’m just saying slow down on the Ertz hate….the Eagles are barely using any of their TEs.

Ertz has about 1/3 of the total catches by TEs

Eifert has about 1/3 of Cinci’s total catches by TEs. They’re clearly favouring their tes more. Vick loves to look for Desean. I do think if the birds changed Qbs you’d see a very different distribution of the ball.

Add to the fact that the Eagles have (and wasn’t this wanted by some) reduced the number of throwing atts.

Vick is currently 23rd in throwing attempts. So if you have less attempts, you’re going to see less balls going to Ertz.

I just wouldn’t make any proclamations, whether “he sucks” or “he’s great” at this point. (and yes, I am concerned with his tendancy – from college – to drop a ball or 2 every game)

gmcliff
gmcliff
October 1, 2013 12:36 pm

Stop…Has nothing to do with Vick, because the guy (Ertz) is barely on the field….Thats bullshit Vinny…..

and again Jason Avant is the second leading receiver on the team, does that suggest he is better than we think he is? Or, is he just fortunate to be on the receiving end of those passes?

I said I would look to see him improving week to week over the season. Then I will begin to form an opinion of him.

You are the one saying he’s “not good enough” and should be traded after 4 games. All I am saying is judging a guy after 4 games is premature.

BTW Gronk caught those 6 passes over his first 4 NFL games. (all the numbers I put were of those guy’s first 4 games in the NFL) He couldn’t be judged after those first 4 games, and neither should Ertz.

Every damn Receiver on their Roster makes an impact because they have one of the Best QB’s in Tom Brady as you can same the same thing about Peyton Mannings Receivers/TE’s while at Indy and noe with Denver… What has Dallas Clark, B Stokley, A Collie done with out Manning or Deion Branch without Tom Barady
and you can add the Saints Receivers, What did Robert Meachem do without Drew Brees
You are going to write off a young promising Player in Ertz after 4 Weeks , but then expect to get something in return by Trading him as if he would have Value.. So What E0S, what does that have to do with Ertz; He’s not an NFL TE….and it was obvious Celek was replacing an inept LJ Smith; Celak is Ertz’s Daddy, he’s not half as skilled actually playing the position like Celek. Celek was a lot more reliable than Smith, and still is, which is why Ertz has yet to replace him.

I Disagree. I see nothing that says he can play the position. If they make him WR, he has a chance to play. He’s not enough man to be an every down TE.

Those Big Time plays you claim he had, made no impact. He caught the ball….YAAAH!!!! Jason Avant, actually has more IMPACT plays.

Vin, I’m not a fan of yours, I think you should honor your bet, plus, like I said before, your hard on for MV7 is worrisome. With that being said, I must admit, that’s a nice breakdown of the numbers. He (Ertz)has a higher yards per catch average than any of them, if those #’s hold true. I am a Zach Ertz guy. Time must be given to these guys to develop. Those are nice #’s he’s put up with a limited role. I believe in two to three years he will be a prime receiving target.

If chip were to truly coach to his strengths he would bench Vick and play with Two TE 1 WR the other TE as a FB and Shady and Bryce split 60/40 at tailback. Foles would need to QB because on pass plays they would have to be over the line to the middle to the TE’s

Should be able to run the ball all day and complete passes to keep the D honest.

I agree Paul, the Eagles receivers are not real good – including Jackson. But in todays NFL there is no such thing as not being able to get a receiver open.

A good coach can, put guys in motion, run rub routes, overload zones…. any number of things to get guys open. A good coach could get high school kids open in the NFL. Chip Kelly and Pat Shurmur are failing in this area.

What happened to all this talk about Chip Kelly finding a way to keep teams from shutting down DJax? All the RAH-RAH were saying that during the off season… Well if you didn’t understand the Pat Surmur hiring, now you do… Kelly know nothing about the NFL passing game.

Chip Kelly sucks when it comes to the NFL passing game… and Shumur is not much better.

This Chip “Jelly” Kelly’s Offense is predicated off of Repitition and Execution and Tempo.. If any of these 3 Elements are not in Synched, His Offense becomes very predictable .. Coach Kelly will not be succesful at the NFL Level unless he is able to adjust and make changes on the fly and right now, he appears incapable of doing so..Eagles run the same basic 8 Plays over and over and running Teams into the ground and pooping them out works at the COllege Level but not in the NFL… Kelly is a Fraud and belongs back at the College Ranks, He’s an Amateur at the NFL Level plain and simple

I have stated this many many times but will repeat- Many of you on here care far more about being right then you do about the Eagles getting better.

Guys- you know it takes 3 years to even begin to see what you have in a player… right? Yes, there are a few times that this is not the case but…. for the most part- 3 years.

Ertz SEEMS to have the tools… time will tell. Cliff, 4 games? really? Reminder, you are not a GM. You are no better than Howie and THAT is saying something.
