Dallas Takes Denver To The Wire
The game of the week took place in Jerryworld on Sunday, with the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys putting on quite the offensive show.
Denver narrowly edged the Cowboys 51-48, with a Tony Romo interception in the final minutes setting up the Broncos to kick the game-winning field goal.
The Broncos managed to stay unbeaten, as Peyton Manning tossed four more touchdown passes and ran for one more.
The game shows how high a level the Cowboys are capable of playing at when they’re on top of their game. Romo threw for over 500 yards and four touchdowns, and got all of his offensive weapons involved in the game. Dez Bryant and Terrence Williams both went off for over 140 yards and combined for three touchdowns. Tight end Jason Witten also went over 120 yards and caught a touchdown.
The question for the Eagles is whether or not their defense will be able to contend with Romo and the Cowboys in a couple of weeks. Dallas is prone to turnovers at times, but when they’re clicking they could be as bad a matchup for the Philadelphia defense as anyone.
Coaching Hot Seat Updates
Tom Coughlin: The Giants are off to their first 0-5 start since the 1970’s. They’ve been miserable on defense, and have turned the ball over 20 times. With each loss, their hole gets deeper and deeper for them to dig out of. Is it time for Coughlin to be worried about his job security? I still don’t think so. I have to believe that the Giants organization has a great deal of respect for a coach that has won two of the last five Super Bowls, and that they’ll be patient with the team through this rough season.
Ron Rivera: The progress just hasn’t been there for Cam Newton. The Panthers have underachieved since last season, and nothing short of a playoff appearance can keep Rivera from getting the ax this year.
Watch Out For The Colts
Andrew Luck wants no part of the sophomore slump.
Luck led the Colts on a rally to defeat the unbeaten Seattle Seahawks 34-28. The second-year quarterback helped take the team on three late scoring drives, outscoring the Seahawks 17-3 in the final quarter and a half.
The Colts now stand at 4-1. They’ve taken down two of the NFC powerhouses, San Francisco and Seattle, in the last three weeks. With the Houston Texans looking more than beatable, the AFC South is there for the Colts to win.
An Indianpolis Colts-Denver Broncos playoff game is an event that I think needs to happen this year.
Around The League Quick Thoughts
- How about the Cincinnati Bengals? The Bengals won a defensive battle with the New England Patriots 13-6, holding Tom Brady without a touchdown pass for the first time in 52 games. The Bengals have now defeated two of the league’s top quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady) in the last three weeks, but lost to the likes of Bryan Hoyer and the Cleveland Browns. Go figure that one out.
- Andy Reid’s Chiefs remain undefeated, picking up their fifth win of the season in Tennessee 26-17. The Kansas City defense/special teams units continue to play a big role in Reid’s success, with the special teams providing a turnover and a touchdown, and the defense intercepting Ryan Fitzpatrick twice. Linebacker Justin Houston has 8.5 sacks through five games.
- The New Orleans Saints earned a difficult road victory over the Chicago Bears to stay unbeaten. Pierre Thomas scored several touchdowns for the offense, while Rob Ryan’s defense held Matt Forte and the Chicago offense in check.
- Another ugly showing for Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, who played another terrible game in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Schaub began the game by throwing a pick-six (the fourth straight game that he’s had an interception run back for a score) and finished with three picks on the night. The Texans never recovered, and suffered an embarrassing 34-3 blowout.
Greg Schiano is the hottest seat in football
the bucs are only scoring 11 points a game. snoze fest for season ticket holders
Hey Denny, I notice you don’t have anything to say this week about your boy Mike McCoy, last week he was the next Lombardi, here goes some of what you wrote
The Chargers are 2-2, and could easily be 4-0. Both of their losses were decided by three points, and came at the hands of a good Houston team and a surprising Titans squad.
Look at the job that McCoy has done so far compared to that of Chip Kelly. Going into the season, which coach had the better offensive talent to work with on paper? Who had the stronger offensive line? Who had better receivers and running backs?
Which coach is doing the better job so far? Which coach is getting the most out of his talent?
The results speak for themselves
How did Rivers do this week being coached by your boy? 3 ints, that’s how! Guess what Denny? they both have the same record, and from listening to you, McCoy has more NFL experience, you can have McCoy, I’ll take Chip over him any day.
Andrew, Andrew, Andrew.
Once again, you aren’t looking at the big picture.
The question that I ask when evaluating any team every week is did they make progress this week, and do I get a sense that the franchise as a whole is improving and growing.
Rivers had a bad week. One bad week. The first three weeks? 11 touchdowns, two interceptions. Bad weeks are going to happen to everyone. Even good teams suffer setbacks here and there, and we’ll see how they bounce back.
Its about the big picture, the long term. McCoy is reviving the team’s franchise quarterback and getting him to succeed with mediocre, piss poor talent around him on the offensive line and at the skill positions.
As for the Eagles and Chip Kelly? The results have been scattered and random every week. There’s been little rhythm on offense since the San Diego game, and I really have no reason now to believe that this thing is going to work then I did in Week 1. The coach has helped lose them a couple games already, and his wins have come against a Washington team with a qb that wasn’t ready to play and a terrible, unprepared defense, and god-awful Giants team that allows 35 points a game and commits four turnovers a week.
You’ve got to look a lot deeper than wins and losses to tell which coach has done a better job.
And Vick has 9 total TDs n 2 ints, I can make the same case for Chip if your using that theory, we are setting yardage records with a O as you state is all over the place, we scored over 30 points 3 times already, only did it ONE time last year, this is without a number two WR, I also saw our D step up in the 4th quarter and a backup QB lead us on some good drives, I don’t know about you but that’s progress, how can you say the Chargers are showing good signs after seeing them blow a 20 point lead, lose to teams that are showing their not as good as you think and Rivers as you say had one bad game? Your funny Denny. Like I’ve been saying from day one, by mid season when we have this system down, were going to take our division and make a strong playoff run.
9 tds????
Its 5 thrown tds
2 rushing tds
2 ints
3 fumbles
2 of the ints/doinkfumbles returned for tds
So….+7 tds -2 opposition tds in 4.5 games……that’s +5 or 35 pts
Foles is 3 tds and +21 in just over a half……
that’s weird.
That’s a very fair point about Vick, I would agree that he’s been much better at protecting the ball this year, save for the Kansas City game.
Yardage records don’t mean a damn thing though. The Eagles were putting up great yardage the last couple years with Reid too, and what did all of those yards translate into?
And to believe that the defense is really making progress is an absolute joke…again, the Giants have given their games away all year with mistakes…and when they were actually on point last Sunday, they were burning the Eagles with Nicks and Randle all day.
And I don’t want to hear a thing about how poor Chip Kelly doesn’t have his number two receiver though. McCoy lost both of his starting receivers, he’s got no offensive line, and his running back tandem is currently Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown. Kelly has a healthy offensive line that a lot of people (yourself included) expected to be good, he’s also got one of the top running backs in football, and he’s got a home run hitter in DeSean Jackson…
McCoy is doing more with less. I’m impressed that the Chargers are even as competitive as they are. I would tell you the same thing about teams like the Dolphins, Jets, and Browns. The coaching staffs on all of those teams have done tremendous work so far.
Maybe by the end of the year, Kelly will show me enough that I actually feel good about where this team is going. But right now, all I see are a ton of questions and not nearly enough answers.
Can add hC Marrone with the job he’s doing in Buffalo as well
Coaches on the Hot Seat are the Following
Falcons Mike Snith
Panthers Ron Rivera
Bucs Gary Sciano
Giants Tom Coughlin
Vikings Leslie Frazier
Texans Gary Kubiak
I don’t think any of the Coaches get canned
During the Season, but if they don’t turn things around and at least compete, they are in jeopardy of losing their Jobs
Just like to play devil’s advocate, but the leads the SD offense in the following categories:
Rushing yards
Total Yards
Ave pts/game
SD leads the Eagles offense in just passing yards.
So I see your point Denny, but we have also seen this from Rivers before. He starts out going bananas and then he fades down the stretch and cries about it. I want to see how he plays later in the season before I decide how turned around he is.
