What Was It That Spooked Nick Foles?

Earlier in the season, I watched the tape of the Eagles battle with the Denver Broncos and I was wondering why the Birds secondary was playing so scared.  It was as if they had seen a ghost or a scary movie on the night before the game.  They were playing ten to twelve yards off the receiver, whom they were supposed to be covering.

I knew that they had been intimidated by all the talk of how great Peyton Manning was and how he was a sure Hall of Famer.  It had spooked nearly all of them.

I don’t know what spooked Nick Foles yesterday, but something did.  He wasn’t himself.  He seemed to frightened by the moment.  The chance to beat the Dallas Cowboys, put the team on top of the NFC East and win the team’s number one quarterback position was right there before them.

Prior to yesterday’s game against the Cowboys, Foles had been able to handle everything.  He was level-headed during his battle with Michael Vick for the starting quarterback position.  The former Arizona quarterback had responded to all the questions during the quarterback competition with class and composure.

“Nothing bothers this kid”, I said to myself numerous.

After losing the battle for the starting job, he showed us he could be a terrific backup for Vick by the way he continued to prepare for each game like he was the starter.   Sure as day he stepped up to the plate when he was needed in the Giants game.  He played even better the next week against the Buccaneers, but yesterday Foles wasn’t able to handle the big stage.

We didn’t play like the cool-headed youngster, anymore.  He seemed to be in a panic.

The first time he was sacked he was looking downfield for somebody to get open, but didn’t see LeSean McCoy releasing out of the backfield with a little room between himself and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bruce Carter, who was responsible for him.  All the other receivers were being covered like a blanket on the play.  He wound up getting sacked by Dallas defensive end George Selvie.

In the Tampa Bay and New York games, Foles looked up McCoy when he got his opportunities.  He wasn’t seeing the field yesterday like he did the week before in Tampa Bay.  I don’t know what spooked the kid but something did. Giants with class.  He was more than ready when Vick sprained his hamstring.

Nothing had bothered Nick Foles before the Dallas Cowboys game, but he lost his way yesterday.  In the two other games, everything had worked for him.  He had gotten the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible, but the youngster couldn’t see anything yesterday.  He couldn’t find the receivers who were open and he couldn’t get them the football.

Foles completed only 11 of 29 passes for 80 yards.  His quarterback rating was pathetic at 46.2.

Foles had been so accurate with his throws against the Giants and the Buccaneers.  Foles couldn’t throw the ball into the ocean against the Cowboys.  Jason Avant was wide open in the end zone and Foles threw the ball into the ground.  He threw the ball behind his receivers or over their heads.

Pressure.

He doesn’t respond well when he’s getting pressured in the pocket, and that has always been the case with him. And yesterday he started seeing ghosts and started second guessing himself.

Once he lost confidence it was a wrap.

I don’t know ts? It didn’t seem like he was being pressured in the pocket that much..I think his confidence was lost before he stepped on the field

You know…on second viewing, he seemed lack he had a fair amount of time in the pocket more often than not.

The problem more seemed to be confusion, he was looking for the underneath stuff, and when it wasn’t there he didn’t seem to know where to go with the ball. He’s just not comfortable with those deep-ish passes.

He was like 0-8 on passes that were thrown 15 yards or more.

decent article. i didnt understand what i was watching with foles yesterday, he didnt look like he did in his previous games, practices and preseason games. something was wayyyyyyyy wrong. i havent seen a qb look that pathetic since doug pederson

im hearing on the radio he may have had a groin issue? something was wrong big time, you dont play one way in all your prior games and practices then all of sudden just play differently unless u are injured or something is going on with your brain.

im not ready to write foles off yet and dont really understand what happened yesterday but that was embarrassing yesterday

yea i just dont understand what happened yesterday it makes no logical sense

im really dumfounded.

in other news barkley is awful, not an nfl qb.

last i read you post on the playcalling on the other article real and do agree somewhat the game plan was kind of weird. what i dont like about chips playbook is so much of the runs are sweeps outside, id like to see more runs in between c/g gaps and t/g gaps, more power type runs. also dont like everything is done in the shotgun 4th and inches we go shotgun? i like this offense a lot more than andys and more than a lot of teams offenses schemes but chip has to tweak it a bit.

back to QB DO NOT draft a qb this year NONE, focus on getting this D better and do whatever it takes to get Jameis Winston in the 2015 draft and i mean whatever it takes. kid throws like rodgers and can run with the best of em, he is gonna be a star

Listen, I think most logical people are confused when they saw that game yesterday. Foles looked inept out there. But how much was it to do w/ his groin? We’ve seen Foles play similar style defenses and put up 20 points. We’ve seen Foles get pressured, stand in the pocket and make great throws. He has been accurate since day 1.

But yesterday we saw a different player. I honestly think this crap about it being: the pressure, the press coverage, is just crap … He’s had to deal with that before.

My point is, we simply can’t throw this guy out to pasture just because of 1 horrible game. I’m not sure how much of this had to do w/ the groin injury but I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The question boils down to this: 1. If Vick remains our QB for this season we will most likely see Chip Kelly go after a QB in the draft. Maybe even his own guy from Oregon who has a 50% completion percentage!

Or 2. We throw Foles in there. If Foles sucks (we get a good draft pick) if He doesn’t suck WE GO DEFENSE in the draft and have a franchise guy.

You can argue that i’m calling it quits on the season all you want, but to me it’s losing an opportunity if you Sit Foles. and i’m not so sure Vick is really better than Foles

I agree. Vick is just a different brand of lousy, he’s always been mediocre. Foles was god-awful yesterday, but he and Barkley need to split the reps for the rest of the year to see if either can run this offense well enough and stay healthy to be next-year’s starter (or backup). This needs to be a “taking stock” year, which is why they should have never resigned Vick.

Honestly, no one buckles that badly from pressure. Foles had plenty of pressure on him in previous games. The only thing i can determine is this “Groin” thing must have been much more severe than we were let on.

Chip Kelly has been amazing at hiding injuries so far! and I think this was one of those times.

What winning teams has Vick beat over the past 2 seasons?

Washington with RGIII on one leg…nope….Cleveland with Weeden throwing 4 picks…nope….the collapsing Giants…nope

Oh ya…Baltimore.

Vick has 4 wins over the past season and a 3rd, 3 against ‘losing’ teams, and you’re harping because Foles has only beaten losing teams.

Funny.

Your hero has 1 win over a .500+ team over the past season and a third, so I wouldn’t get too hung up on the fact that’s all Foles has been able to do.

Foles had a terrible game yesterday.

All QBs have 1 or 2 terrible games between weeks 7 and 16.

It happens to pretty much every single QB. As I was saying for over a year now, it is to be expected.

And it is precisely why he has to be rolled out there for the rest of the year to see if he can learn from/improve on trials like these.

If an NFL team does not allow for a young QB to fight through the problems that will be experienced by every single young QB who plays in the NFL, then they will spin their wheels forever.

Foles plays, and if he is allowed one more stinker – as long as there is progress (and right now – there has still been more good than bad with the guy)

If he reeks more than once more, and continues to struggle over the last half of the season…..then its a top 5 pick on a franchise QB and you give that guy the next season and a bit.

Its the only way the Birds will win the SB over the coming decade.

(oh and BTW – if we get a top 5 pick…or take any QB…I GUARANTEE he will have one – and probably 2 – games like FOles just did, because it happens to EVERY young QB)

Glad no-one with your myopic viewpoint runs this team. Too many of you want to focus on the mythical future franchise Qb to the exclusion of everything else.

Why bother playing any games? Why not forfeit the rest of the season, hold an extended training camp that lasts the rest of the season, and have Foles and Barkley take all the snaps, just so we can ‘see what we have’?

No team goes into develop future qb mode with a good chance to make the playoffs. NONE. Neither will this team.

I know you’re not half as smart as you think you are, but you betray it with every single post.

The Colts didn’t tank, they went into the season trying to win. They didn’t start tanking until it was clear that Painter and Orlovsky were garbage. It was also complete luck(no pun intended) that the year they sucked Andrew Luck was waiting for them. Can’t run a franchise based on good fortune,

Which one of these teams went into tank mode? None of them! A couple years ago the Seahawks were 7-9. They didn’t hand Wilson the job, they gave him the same opportunity that Foles failed to take advantage of…he won a qb competition! That was with a qb who’s accomplished nothing at the NFL level and Wilson having a far better college resume than Foles.

SF didn’t tank- they made an evaluation of Kapernick’s talent compared to Smith’s. They believed Kapernick gave them the best chance to win, it wasn’t about ‘seeing what they have’.

No-one on that list made the decision to sit a better Qb when the playoffs were within reach, so stop making things up.

October 21, 2013 12:24 pm

My problem is, people are expecting Foles to play perfect in every single game. They want 24 of 30 w/ 4 TDs no Int’s every game. NO QB plays that well. But for some reason it’s the only way he can win the job for some people.

I blame his play yesterday on Injury. That said. That’s multiple injuries for Foles in 2 seasons. Something that we’ve gotten used to with Vick. I don’t like it. Protect the QB!

I sensed the spirit of “Bitch” in Foles play yesterday and there’s no other way to put it. Kinda felt the same when Kolb was running from Matthews only to get twisted and concussed after an awful display of quarterbacking.

That was Kolb’s last shot, and guess what guy?

Yesterday was Foles last shot.

3 strikes you’re out!!!!

Foles had a chance last season to take the reigns and failed.

Foles had a chance to win the starting job during preseason and failed.

The stars were all aligned against a mediocre Cowboys team with it’s best defensive player injured and the top RB out,and the defense gives it’s best performance of the year only to have Foles come in and play the worst outing of QB any of us have ever seen, when he could have generated only 20 points to cement his future once and for all as an Eagle.

prediction!!!!

paste it!

Vick comes back and leads the Eagles to their first wild card game in years and sign a 3 year deal before the season is out.

Get use to it guys……

Vick is the best QB on the Eagles and NFL teams don’t go to lesser talent at the most important position in Football.

We’ll draft Vick’s backup who have similar skills to Vick with the read option threat and the QB will one day be our QB of the future, once Vick hangs em up.

They give up tons of yards, even gave up yards to Carson Palmer and Geno Smith…Geno Smith has a luxury of a defense that keeps his team in the game, not the other way around…Yesterday that’s exactly what this Eagles defense did, kept the Eagles in the game…You are stay true to your colors, you remain ignorantly selective!

What Spooked Foles?

There was a rumor that he heard where the Cowboys were going to be able to game plan for him and not have to guess who the QB was going to be when they played on Sunday. After the second play he found out it wasn’t a rumor. He then went on to realize that coming in for relief of Vick and playing against another team that wasn’t sure who to gameplan for was allot different then being the established number one guy.

Cowboys played press man and took away Foles’ checkdowns forced him to throw downfield. The second play of the game tells you all you need to know, you could see Foles immediately look for the checkdown and freeze up when he saw it wasn’t there. With Foles in (and gameplanned for) the threat of the deep pass was gone along with the threat of the run. Cowboy’s earlier in the weak when asked who they preferred to play against replied “Nick Foles”. After Sunday I see why.

Can anyone explain why (not how) but why Foles got a concussion??? Just watch the play… it’s as if he was begging to be knocked out of the game… Also, that was a very Kolb-like concussion. He didn’t really seem to hit his head all that hard. I’ve seen other QB’s come back after being hit harder. Oh… yeah I forgot, it’s because he didn’t have his mouth piece in.

Fair enough. I don’t think there’s any reports that confirm what the head injury is or isn’t so I’ll leave it at that. I jumped to a conclusion because normally when they say head injury and don’t let you back into the game that means concussion. Especially with all the lawsuits against the league from former players and their families. So you think Kelly was protecting Foles from the Media and the Fans? What exactly would the media and fans do to effect Foles? Just curious.

regarding protecting him from the media… if he doesnt get cleared its a flawless transition back to mike, with the injury you got 40% of foles talk being is he ok, will he play, will he start instead of 100% bashing him for the worst qb performance in 20 years.

@mhenski… honestly, I’m not a Nick Foles hater. I take issue with those who pronounce him the second coming of Sonny Jurgenson but I have no issues with him as a person. He’s a smart kid and follows a game plan. And honestly although he played poorly yesterday he was the latest victim of Birds management’s ineptitude when it comes to WR. This problem has existed long before Vick, Foles, Kolb, McNabb… DJax is a one trick pony but if the birds had a solid #2 DJax would be deadly. Celek is a liability and highly overrated. He’s not clutch… period. The OLine is serviceable but because of either long developing routes or WR who can’t beat coverage, they have to hold blocks for far too long. Foles is a system QB like Brady. In the right system with the right peaces around him he could do well, but those types of teams take while to build and if Foles stays on the Birds he’ll be the next David Carr. Going back to Birds WR’s, or lack there of, neither of them is a safety net for any QB. Brady has Gronk and had Welker and Hernandez, Brees has Grahm and 95 other 6 foot plus wr’s with a dependable back catching balls out the backfield, Rodgers has Nelson used to have Finley (but lately I think he misses Driver and Jennings), etc…etc… Every good QB has a safety valve. When Vick was in Atlanta he had Crumpler (who became a pro bowler under Vick). There is no consistent WR on this team and there hasn’t been one for years.

Fix that problem and this offense takes giant steps forward.

That would help. I’d sure be great if the Eagles could somehow acquire a Megatron0like clone in the next draft.

I agree. That would help. I’d be nice if the Eagles could somehow acquire a Megatron-like clone in the next draft. I don’t know who’s out there but they definitely need help along those lines, not to mention the defensive backfield.

He played like he was concussed. He threw the ball so poorly, I wonder if one of the earlier hits did him in.
It will probably go down as one of the biggest choking moments in team history. To have a moment like that where he’s coming off NFC player of the week and has a chance to make Mike Vick a sad memory and he lays an egg.
It was nice of his friend Matt Barkley to come in and try to make him look better by throwing 4 passes to the other team.

We all can speculate ,but the bottom line is ,he was offensive player of the week ,and yesterday he was offensive …his confidence and strut were obviously missing.we all can all speculate on everything from a broken heart to a concussed state of confusion.what was clear is he sucked..knowing he hit 65%of his passes and included 8 different guys in the offense the week before ,turned into a guy who couldn’t his a wide open Avant ,threw low ,threw high ..he had the fucking yips…now the million dollar question is ? Was this an aberration or was it who he is and then and only then can we as an organization make substantive decisions.Ive seen Donovan throw worm balls ,I’ve seen passes soar ,meaning ,his techniques were all screwed up.he stepped into zero throws and turned back the clock on our progress as a team and an organization. Its inherent,on the coach to show some flexibility and make adjustments to make him more comfortable..for some reason the game didn’t slow down and he shit his pants .plain and simple ..now we find out what he’s made of ..you sit,him if he’s healthy ,you probably lose him,you throw him back in there ,you dummy up the game plan and help rehabilitate him.Ive seen lots of great QBs get the yips ..it’s the one step back ,two forward I hope 9 takes ,not the other way around .

Nick foles played like shit, is that big news?, especially for a quarterback of his experience level, how many shit bombs did young qbs lay early in their career, Russell Wilson , luck, many others …but

It’s huge news in philly town when a white quarterback is on the cusp of unseating a black quarterback

There’s some real talk for you idiots to chew on

Grow up mhenski, read up, listen up there is nothing weird a bout my post just ignorance on your part, I feel bad for you to be so ignorant of the dynamic in the nfl you still believe in the tooth fairy that the best player plays at qb, these owners are millionaire men who want to maximize profits, that’s why this sorry ass of a qb Vick ended up here instead of buffalo, where Vick wanted to go after prison, he was directed to go to Philly, the best place for him to be placed other than Washington, the reasons for which should be abundantly clear to any one with half a brain,, Vick himself, a good man and great competitor, wondered aloud why he was in Philly behind mcnabb and kolb, vick a third stringer, when he could have been in buffalo as starter, but he didn’t know then what we know now what the nfl had in store for him

The same dynamic us going on like it was a century and a half ago, white men exploiting black men for profits

Lions den, I’m calling you out as a mother you know what, you are virtually silent on here until foles plays like shit, then you make up facts, foles got sacked on the first possession because he failed to see shady on the check dwn, instead waited for djax to get open deep, but you repeat shit that fits your sorry ass agenda, that foles is captain check down, if you don’t believe me talk to ray didinger who studed the film, and opined that foles played poorly, but didn’t use the check down on that first drive

You are a passive aggresive pussy

@jakedog… I’m sorry you wasted your time with me also. Does this mean you promise to stop talking to me? If not what do I have to do to make this happen?

Let me take a moment to be actively aggressive as opposed to passively aggressive: TAKE YOUR WEAK REVERSE PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLSHIT ABOUT THE WHITE MAN BEING DISENFRANCHISED BY THE BLACK MAN IN A SPORT THAT DIDN’T ALLOW BLACKS TO PLAY IN IT UNTIL THE 1930’s AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ^%##. A SPORT THAT TOLD BLACKS THAT THEY WEREN’T SMART ENOUGH TO PLAY QB AND SENT SOME TO CANADA TO PURSUE THEIR DREAM. A SPORT THAT DIDN’T RESPECT BLACK QB’S ENOUGH TO DRAFT ONE FIRST UNTIL 2001.

And you’re a liar “you are virtually silent on here until foles plays like shit” Foles played like SHIT all last year got knocked out because of injury and I didn’t say a word…

SO I’M CALLING YOU OUT BITCH!!!! Since you know so much… tell me the reason why the Eagles began their trend of starting Black QB’s, because there is a fan driven reason why Jaworski got booed out of town and it has a lot to do with Lawrence Taylor.

One more thing genius you do know biorhythms are affected by emotional stability don’t you. Fear has a great affect on ones biorhythms some players can control it and some can’t. Check below for what armyprince thinks about Foles’ biorhythms…

FOLES choked and he quit yesterday. Don’t give me that injury shit. When Vick and McNabb even Garcia played through injury and did it well at times. He did not have to take that last sack. FOLES QUIT YESTERDAY!!! Why else would he take that sandwich at the end? Also you see McCoy and DJack acting disgusted and showing up the QB?? They would never do that to Vick or did it to McNabb. That’s called leadership and respect. Chip will get his QB next year. But for this year this is Vicks team and his lockeroom.

Vick legs and playmaking ability. Would have ignited that team. That team was flat and dead yesterday.

From Foles Agent relayed to me,
On Sat night, Nick Foles watched the Movie the “Sixth Sense” and found out that it mostly filmed in Philadelphia and just got
“Bugged-out”, I realize this crazy and hard to believe but Fokes is very sensitive to suspense filled Movies and this one got him bad..
He was heard saying “I only See Dead People” when leaving the Linc..
His Career is over in Philadelphia..

Taking the convo away from the philosophical, a a former college football player, hall of fame at my college, and free agent for the Michigan panthers of the usfl, as an athlete you have biorhythms, you feel great great most times if you are good, but every now and then you just don’t have it, it’s an aberration of how you normally play, but you need the opportunity to go out again to show that it was an abberation, any athlete reading this knows what I’m talking about

“What Was It That Spooked Nick Foles?” That’s a great question GC. I was wondering that myself. He seemed to be so cool, calm, and collected in the two games prior to this. I wondered and thought and thought and wondered and I concluded he just simply allowed himself to be intimidated by the Cowboy uniforms and bedazzled by all the stars. I believe he just psyched himself out of it. Grow up Nick. They put their pants on the same way you do yours. If he’s that easily intimidated, there’s no hope for him as a starting QB.
