Was Chip Kelly The Right Hire?

ChipKelly8No pro experience and a “gimmick” offensive style. Praised for his work ethic to the game of football, doubted that it could translate to the NFL level. We knew what Chip was able to do with boys, but would his up-tempo style be accepted by men? One half of football versus the Redskins had us mesmerized. The lack of time management and awareness made us second guess his preparation. The quarterback carousel opens up debates on a weekly basis. Still, when all is said, Chip Kelly was the right hire for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching vacancy.

I won’t say that Chip Kelly was ready to coach in the NFL. With no prior experience and less than five years of success at Oregon where he made his name, how could we forecast the impact he would make at the pro level. Many scrutinized his desire to turn pro, and how he would jump at the chance to return to the collegiate level if the opportunity was to present itself. The expectations would be that Chip would simply try to be a college coach at the NFL level, failing to adjust to the size, speed and brutal physicality of the NFL. Even with the pros adapting college based formations over the last five years such as the wild-cat and read-option, Kelly had a label, he was a target, everything he said and all that he was going to do was under the microscope.

With all of this pressure and uncertainty, attention, excitement and intrigue was once again returning to the Philadelphia football sports market. What was stale, tiring and dull with the final seasons of the Reid era, was now switching scripts and becoming entertainment that local and national people were paying attention to. I was on board from the start, and slowly the doubters were also buying their ticket to board the Chip Kelly bus.

3-4 record after the first seven games of the season. The record by no means can serve as the reflection for how we measure Chip Kelly’s impact thus far. We have witnessed offensive play-calling that dropped our jaws, others that made us question if Kelly really thought such a formation could work in the NFL. Kelly has been a pleasant interview to watch and listen to, challenging reporters the way Andy Reid never did. The players have respect for the coach and respect for one another. The coach has found a way for us to make no further mention of the Riley Cooper incident, and the Cary Williams scrap with Cooper.

We are hungry for a return to the playoffs and to be discussed as a team contending for the Super Bowl.

The talent level on this football team lacks in so many areas. Kelly has not had the ability to insert his guy at the quarterback position. He inherited players like Vick and Foles who could do “parts” of what he needs from the position. Kelly was restricted with what he could surround that quarterback with to make his style of offense work.

He drafted a pass-catching tight-end in the second round that has taken over the role that Celek use to have. Casey who was supposed to be the joker/h-back type player, was a huge signing, so we thought.

When Maclin went down for the season we were all worried that we lacked a secondary wide-receiver who could make plays, and that has been an ongoing storyline. No matter what scheme he ran for the defense or coordinator he hired, we knew they were going to be bad. This was going to be a season of ups and downs, bumps and bruises, learning curves, wow moments and things that made you shake your head in disgust.

It’s year one, we got it right bringing in Chip Kelly. He is going to get this franchise back to a period of respectability. My patience for Philadelphia sports has dropped in the negative; all four franchises are so far from being contenders to win us our next Championship.

I can’t take that headache out on Chip. This is year one and I know there were so many pieces he inherited that should not have been drafted, signed or traded for. There may have been coaches who had NFL experience. There may have been college coaches with better and more successful tenures. Kelly is a rare kind. He does it his way, and accepts the pros andcons that come with that approach.
He has the intelligence, drive, personality and patience that are needed to win both on and off the football field in the city of Philadelphia. Chip Kelly will deliver more than wins. He will bring us that Super Bowl that we have been starving for!

What I don’t yet see is long term vision in terms of player personnel.

Look at the colts. 2010 they draft 2 ok with their first 2 picks because they knew they were going qb the following year. luck had been hyped for 2 years, and they targeted him. Then traded manning (very difficult, but necessary) for more picks. Then completely tank the season for their target, and after he’s drafted, select 2 TEs because they are young qb safety blankets.

Vision. Long term planning. Unpopular and risky choices (the manning/luck thing could have been an epic disaster)

They recognized the state of their team and overhauled it. And yes, they got lucky with luck, that’s all part of it, but they had the balls to make big necessary moves.

Now the birds. Clearly, after the disasters of the past 2 seasons, the team needed a complete long term overhaul.

At the draft I saw a ot and a te, picks that screamed “new qb coming” but they kept the old man around, and the birds will middle about to 7-9 or 8-8 an spin their tires, personnel wise, going nowhere.

When Kelly arrived there should have been a purge of ‘talent’ for picks (and yes that’s dear an and probably McCoy who will be 30 when this team is good).

I would have then gone ol, ol, ol at the draft with the first 3 picks, followed by all d the rest of the way. Then they should have played Doles all year to a 3-13 record and known if he was developing or not.

With a young online jelling in year 2, and with a top 5 pick draft the qb with a te and we to go with, all other picks on d.

Year 3 it’s all about slime and finding a RB.

Most fans (cept the Vick or nothing) clowns can accept losing or struggles if they can see where the teAm is headed.

After 8 weeks of Kelly no one knows what we are going to do next year to improve the team. Vick? Maybe. Doles? Maybe. Draft a qb? Maybe. Concentrate on the d? Maybe.

I don’t see. Vision and for that I am disappointed.

This week is the most important game of the 2013 Season to date..
I need to see Chip Kelky put together a game Pkan to Beat the Giants
With a less than 100% Healthy Vick and no real back-up QB with Foles out..
If he doesn’t adjust and slow the game down, rely or a pure Rushibg attack with 2 back backfields, some double & triple TE formations to limit Vick’s getting hit and having to scramble as much and if he rubs the same read-option attack,
Then Eagkes & Vick have little chance in Winning
This Fane this week is all on Chip Kelly and his game plan

if Vick tries to run a pocket safe offense then Eric Berry will get a gimme TD, DeAngelo Hall will get a swatted lateral pick 6 and Justin Tuck will push him all the way back into the corner of the end zone for no apparent reason, AGAIN.

I’m Philadelphia — i kick them while they are down and enjoy it. Mike Vick chose to come back to Philly for half price knowing a LARGE portion of the fan base didn’t welcome him back. But i still cheered his Monday night Washington week one performance and if by chance he is able to repeat that performance again, I’ll cheer that too. But make no mistake it is funner to kick Mike Vick.

Reid won all those games and never adjusted? You guys don’t know what an adjustment is… A couple of weeks ago Fraudman got on this site and said Kelly needs to go back to college because he can’t adjust. Shortly after that comment barber says “Kelly’s adjustments have been incredible” post game analysis by people who know said ” great adjustments by the coaching staff ” you guys don’t have acces to films to show you the adjustments… Slight changes in blocking assignments etc… So please on the adjustment thing whether it’s Reid or Kelly shut the hell up

Ahh the hac I like; informative and not suffering from Vick Obsessive Disorder…lol
Good post. Not so much Reid though. Though he surely made some adjustments; he also failed dropped the ball in this area too many times. But Kelly? Spot on.
If you continue to expose the site attention whore fraudman; I may become a fan even with your VOD..lol

I see a vision for the future but its way way way to early to say he is or is not the right guy. I live what they are trying to do on D but we wont know until it actually happens.

Im with vinnie… i wanted a new starting QB but clearly there was not much out there.

What i hope to see for the the second half of the season is the kind of effort we had seen last week from the D.

Thus far the only thing I like about the Chip Kelly era is Billy Davis. There are flashes on offense, but I’m pretty sure we would have seen more than that with Jon Gruden. The Oregon favoritism over legitimate high quality NFL scouting selections…even this early are enough to make me vomit.

This was going to be a “Lets See What We Got” season from the get go. There will be an early and fast complete over haul at the end of the year. Whats going to be news to fuel the haters next year is thet VICK IS NOT GOING ANY WHERE!!!!!!! The brass is impressed by his first few ganes of the season. THIS INJURY HAS TO BE THE FAKEST I HAVE SEEN IN THE NFL PERIOD!!!!!! Yet the fools, the trolls, and the feigns want to overlook an obvious giddy MV on the sidelines and a smug coach in the press whom shows the reporters exactly what they know…… NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! Season highlight. Brent Celek Sucks. Jason Avant is serviceable and reliable, Shaddy is well…… Shaddy……. DJAX still gets alligator arms at times but is an undeniable threat all the time. The O-Line is old at some spots and needs some additions, Lane Johnson has been very very disapointing. ALL THIS VICK TALK HAS OVERLOOKED THAT!!!!!!! Damn near got Foles killed LMAO!!! With the exception of MV, DJAX, Shaddy, Jason Avant, Every single offensive position needs to let the young guys figure it out. Lets look to the draft, and free agency. GET HOWIE RISEMAN OUT OF THE BUSINESS!!!!!!!!

I am not happy with the loss for the Eagles yesterday but estatic that the Vick ERA has finally ended … (which should have happened last Off-Season with the Coaching Purge) At least now Kelly can give the Reps/Playing Time to both Foles & Barkely for he must find out before Seasons End on who has the future potential to lead this Team… To was a year playing a broken down 12 Year Vet was assanine from the get go which I have stated from way back in January, and it’s not that I am a Vick Hater, I just think he is a lousy QB and a non-Winner as his Career #’s plainly back up .. A great Athlete in his day who plays the QB position, but but a True QB and no one will ever be able to tell me any different.. The Scrambling, back-yard, gadget QB play is exciting to watch and great for some highlights, but it does not, and never has produced consistent Winners in the NFL and that’s the Facts

As many on here have contended the ‘purge’ should have happened even if you somehow want to say that you would be less talented it needed to take place simply from an organizational attitude perspective. last year’s disaster was cancerous… and if getting rid of asmo and drc was needed then so too was getting rid of vick, 10 and maybe 25…. getting high picks is difficult in the nfl but lets face it 25 will be shot by the time the team is good, 10 is cancer and the team rallying behind 7 breeds that finger pointing, loser attitude–next year there should be no more than 10 players on the 53 that were part of fatso’s regime…its as much of an attitudnal turnover as it is talent… something stinks in the eagles system and it needs an enima.

I guess Lane Johnson was a patch instead of making that bone headed draft for the future? The guy has 2 years college O-line experience. Every QB behind that line is getting killed, but Roseman could care less. Sure throw our rookie to the fire, jam his confidence, and waste another draft pick on a QB next year. High Pick too. Yup draft for the same position year after year and ignore the defense. HOWS THAT WORKING OUT FOR US THIS YEAR? In order to rebuild you need to go into the draft knowing exactly what you need VS what you have. How about we adress some other needs in this conversation other than QB. IF THEY DONT FIX THE O-LINE THEN IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO PLAYS OR WHO WE DRAFT!!!!!!!
