Thoughts From Eagles-Cardinals

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia EaglesMissed Opportunities Nearly Cost Eagles

A win is a win, but the Eagles have got to get better at putting opponents away when they’re given the opportunity to do so.

The Arizona offense was sloppy throughout this game. They turned the ball over three times, and the Eagles scored just seven points off of those mistakes.

In the second half, the Eagles offense began the third quarter with a touchdown, but the offense went into a shell for the remainder of the game. They had two three-and-outs and didn’t have a drive longer than six plays in the final two quarters. They kept giving the Cardinals opportunities to get back into the game, and Arizona took advantage, pulling to within three with a chance to win at the end of the game.

This has been a bit of a theme for the Eagles this season. There’s been too many times where they’ve jumped out to quick leads, but have allowed teams to hang around and make things a little too interesting in the final minutes.

Two weeks ago they did the same thing against the Washington Redskins. After jumping out to a 24-0 lead, the offense shut down and Washington scored 16 points and then had an opportunity to tie the game with a final drive.

Sooner or later, if you let teams hang around you’re going to get burned. The Eagles have been very fortunate to get out of their last two games with a win.

Foles Starts Strong, Makes Mistakes In Fourth

Overall it was another good start for Nick Foles, however his performance in the final quarter was not without issue.

Foles began the game on fire. He threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, and then began the third quarter by leading the Eagles on another touchdown drive that ended with his third pass for a score on the day.

In the fourth quarter, things got a little dicey for the young quarterback.

Foles was bailed out of a huge turnover at the end of the fourth quarter by a defensive holding penalty. The Cardinals got good pressure on the young quarterback, and he made a terrible throw that was intercepted by Patrick Peterson. The Cardinals were down by just three at the time, and if the pick had stood, it would have set them up close to field goal range.

On the Eagles’ final possession Foles very nearly ran out of bounds with just over a minute and a half remaining. The Cardinals were out of timeouts, and it would have forced the Eagles to kick a field goal and give the Cards another chance with plenty of time remaining. There’s no excuse for a play like that, the quarterback more so than any other member of the team has got to be aware of the situation at hand.

Fourth quarter mistakes aside, Foles still had a lot of really nice moments. He just keeps making great throws. He’s been putting great touch on his passes, and they’ve been dropping right into his receivers’ arms. In the first half, he was absolute money.

Tight Ends Take Over

When the Eagles spent a second-round pick on Zach Ertz and paid $12 million to James Casey, the expectation was that the tight ends were going to be a focal point of the offense.

Through the first 12 weeks, the production that the Eagles had been getting from the position was pretty underwhelming and disappointing, but today the tight ends finally broke out and made a huge impact on the game.

Zach Ertz caught five passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns. It was a strong showing for this year’s second-round pick.

Veteran Brent Celek had three catches for 20 yards and a touchdown of his own.

If the Eagles begin to consistently get these kind of performances from their top two tight ends, its just going to make a dangerous offense even more potent. Kelly has so many viable options that he can turn to right now. From LeSean McCoy and the running game, to Riley Cooper, DeSean Jackson, and his tight ends its a lot for even the best defenses to account for.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • Chip Kelly had some really questionable play calling on several instances. In the first quarter on a third and seven, Kelly opted to go with a run to LeSean McCoy. Later in the game on a third and 10, Kelly again called a run to McCoy. Neither play worked, and it forced the Eagles into a couple of punts.
  • In the redzone, Kelly called a play out of the Wild Cat formation for Brad Smith that went nowhere. Smith dropped the snap, and then was tackled for a loss. The Eagles stalled on that drive and were forced to settle for three.
  • Kelly did make a good call on 4th and 2 before the half. He elected to go for it. The decision paid off, LeSean McCoy picked up a first down and several plays later the Eagles scored their second touchdown of the day.
  • Riley Cooper made a spectacular catch on an overthrown ball by Nick Foles that he made a great spin move and took for 24 yards down to the Arizona 6 that set up an Alex Henery field goal to give the team a 10-7 lead.
  • DeSean Jackson was held to just three catches for 36 yards.
  • Bryce Brown got five carries, but didn’t do much with them, gaining only four yards.
  • LeSean McCoy gained 79 yards on 19 carries, and also added 36 receiving yards on five catches.
  • The Eagles offensive line struggled against the Arizona pass rush, allowing five sacks.

Defense

  • Trent Cole came up with a strip-sack of Carson Palmer on the opening drive. It was Cole’s fourth sack of the season and he would pick up his fifth in the second half. Bennie Logan recovered the fumble. It set up the Eagles’ first touchdown.
  • Nate Allen came up with his second interception of the year on Arizona’s second drive. Allen picked an underthrown ball by Carson Palmer and returned it 47 yards. Allen would later miss a tackle on Larry Fitzgerald’s touchdown in the second.
  • Brandon Graham sighting this week. Graham sacked Carson Palmer in the second quarter. The former first-round pick picked up another sack in the second half.
  • Cary Williams made a nice play on an interception in the second half.
  • DeMeco Ryans led the team with nine tackles and also picked up a sack.

Special Teams

  • DeSean Jackson had a punt return for a touchdown nullified by a holding penalty on Kurt Coleman.

Final Thoughts

Even though Nick Foles had a couple of bad moments at the end of the game, the reality is that he’s thrown 19 touchdowns to 0 interceptions and his efficient play has allowed this offense to click and score a good amount of points every week.

At 7-5, the Eagles are in control of their own destiny in terms of the division race. As long as they continue to take care of business, they’ll be the division champion and possibly have a shot as the third seed in the NFC.

The fact that we even have an opportunity for that speaks volumes about how far the team has come from what they were a year ago.

Hey Denny, did I call it with the TEs? As for everything else, we made mistakes but beat one of the hottest teams in the NFL, the question was, what can Foles do against a top D, he proved he belongs, as for his mistakes? ALL QBs make them, the good ones are the ones that overcome them and he proved he could, we have our franchise QB! Our D played against one of the hottest QBs over the past few weeks and passed the text, another game not giving up more then 21 points, my only problem was Chip trying to run out the clock in the 4th, he has to do a better job, overall, great win! We are a top 5 team in the NFC.

Great Call Andrew P..
It’s nice to see Kelly & the Offense utilizing these TE’s
And especially in thd Red-Zone as many of us have been waiting for and
They as a group present some difficult match-ups problems for opposing Defenses..
By Season’s end, when you add up both Celek & Ertz’s Stats together
The Eagles will end up with a very Productive TE Position..
Which will be close to a 100 Receptions, 12 TD’s + and a 1,000 yards + between the both of them which is outstanding..

Exactly what the doctor ordered ….coming off a bye week they opted to defer and the defense set the tone early with a,takeaway…nice to see the line force the issue with adequate pressure, one criticism is they failed to wrap up and tackle today ,that needs to be addressed…the first half was a testimony that the coaches utilized there time well spent as they exploited the Arizona dees weaknesses against tight ends ,where was that in the second half? Special teams won this game decidedly with another punting pro bowl effort…the blanket they put on Larry Fitzgerald was effective ,and I didn’t see as much bend in the defense ,they were moving downhill forcing the action on rested legs …the play calls were a bit suspicious at time and until nick foles learns how to slide ,that’s a dangerous ploy.A huge win against a great defense ,and well take it ,but a lot to be gained by watching film and eliminating some of the dumb shit …it’s was pointed out correctly by the commentators ,use and utilize the clock ,speed kills in so many ways ,sometimes it’s self inflicted …be smart ,playing off a turnover and going 3and out is deflating,it’s a young team with much to gain from the game film …let’s hope it remains a December to remember …a huge offensive challenge awaits ,and a team in the Lions who will look to play dirty..keep the focus …go birds

Young D -line continues to impress. Ertz played a nice game. Cooper’s one-hander + spin and YAC was a thing of beauty. It wasn’t five weeks ago he (Cooper) was being discarded as not an NFL caliber player. Foles played well against a real tough defense. The “run the clock out” offense has to be fixed though. Between the play-calling and execution, the 3 & outs are going to cost us a game at some point. I say bring in Casey as a fullback, two tight ends and run a power game out of the “I” formation & not the option runs from the shotgun.

Good balanced write up Denny…Foles lack of execution in the fourth quarters of games are a legitimate concern but not enough to diminish the fact that he has 19 td’s and no turnovers. Its crunch time and he did enough for us to squeeze by with a win…and that’s the most important point…not his stats…the wins!
We also need to recognize that we have a top-flight defense!! Donnie Jones is the best punter in the NFL and its getting us wins…Chip Kelly has to be given consideration as the Coach of the Year
They are balling and bailing us out when

I don’t mince words.

The TEAM played badly in the second half. Defense giving up 2 touchdowns. Oline giving up hella pressure. Foles not being able to make routine throws. It was a TEAM meltdown. Hence the reason why I said that.

Of course, idiot that you are, sees something where there is nothing to see.

Kook breeze Donnie jones has been pro bowl good ..agreed …one last observation, that was obviously addressed ,the challenge successfully came in quick and decisively …nice job…Foles has to eat the ball ,obviously that was a poor decision ,in which he was bailed out ,but if perfection is 19 tds and zero picks it’s very easy to say decisively we have our guy under center ,that’s a win ,win in so many ways …a graham sighting …and Trent Coles nice job guys ,and Nate keeps showing signs ..good for him ….I’d like see more 3 tightened sets late ,and play the clock to its fullest .. It is your only opponent at times.

Guys, I think the second half problems have more to do with the play calling then Foles, I was actually excited when I saw the Cardinals score cause I thought now we can’t take our foot off the gas, we all saw Chip make some bad decisions in the beginning of the year and he learned from it and we haven’t seen those mistakes since, I believe the same is going to happen here, he’s going to figure it out and it will be a thing of the past.

Lane continues to get better…no denying that. Cleaned up his penalties, you don’t hear his # being called anymore which is a good thing. I have to check to see if he was responsible for any of those sacks yesterday, I don’t recall him being hi lighted on that though. He definitely has been continuously improving on pass blocking and is very good at run blocking. He will make his biggest leap next year as most rookies do. I’ll say a stud in the making. Zack Ertz is coming around too, he is going to be a stud TE!

RT Lane Johnson is one of the Few Rookies
to play every snap and Start this Season..
He will only get better & better..
Transitioning from a College OL to the NFL is very difficult which is why it usually takes 2-3 Seasons to settle in
Remember the Cowboys Top Picks of OT Tryon Smoth, the Redskins Trent Williams, the Seahawks R Okung, the 49ers A Davis, these very good Players took a while to adjust to the nuances, techniques and speed of the NFL Game and now considered Pro-Bowl Players
Some expect these Rookie Players to step right in a dominate in their Rookie Seasons which seldom happens along the OL and especially at OT where you are out on an Island many times..

Cliff, you figured the Eagles would win 3 games this year based on your evaluation of his selections and the talent on the team…They have won 7. So, they have already surpassed your expectations based on your evaluation of Howie’s performance by four games and may get to the playoffs..
As far as Lane is concerned, what tackle, even probowl tackles don’t give up sacks. Every rookie o lineman who has played substantial snaps this season has given up sacks(bar none).Your expectations of rookie players are beyond impossible to meet. I know you wanted Ziggy Ansah, he’s got seven sacks, a total of four against GreenBay and the Bucs. Acouple of games where he went against stout lines he didn’t show up. He has to get stronger to deal with some Pro lineman. Your boy Jamie Collins can only come in on passing plays because he needs time to get stronger to play the run. It will take time for him to develop, just like Lane. Respectfully bro. You close the door on guys you initially decide can’t play way to fast. I give you props, you’ve made some good evaluations….but man! We will continue to look at them and evaluate as time goes on.

Yes, I only saw 3 win originally. They have surpassed my expectations, and that of most. I’m not mad. I am an Eagles fan first, and foremost. That being said, I also believe the emergence of Nick Foles, has much to do with it as well.

Let me speak to your comment about Lane Johnson. What Linemen don’t give up sack true….How many lineman have given up as many game to game as many as Lame? I’m telling you King Dunlap, didn’t give up as many, and was killed in this city.

I’m not worried about the guys I wanted. Like I said they wil be all pros. I don’t really see the same in LAME Johnson.

He has all the Skills but needs to improve his technique and core stregnth and overall experience which is coming little by little each week … I like the kid, he’s not afraid to put in the work and seems determine to be a good player in the NFl and with gooc solid COaching, I see no reason why this can’t occur..
You have tunnell-vision sometimes GMCliff where you are way too quick to write off and label Young Players as “Busts’ or “Not all That”.. Continue to do so as is your perogative, while I see improvements made by Johnson and other young Players in the NFL that you have discounted as nobody’s (Russell WIlson, M Floyd, T Matthieu, R Cooper, Z Ertz, Shariff Floyd, Kwann Short)

You did hit on some Young Players who are playing well that you were high on this past Draft or 2 are really growing and playing well (DT Sheldon Richardson, DE Z Ansah,OT DJ FLuker. OLB J Collins)

I am still waiting to see anything much on the Field from Players DE/OLB Dion Jordon, CB Dee Millner, TE T Eifert, DE Bjorn Werner, WR Corradelle Patterson, LB Mant’i Te’o, QB Geno Smith, CB D Slay, DT J Hankins, CB D Amerson, Saferty DJ Swearinger who all have not made the kind of impact yet in their Rookie Seasons, in which I beleive we were in agreement that some of these Players were a Tad Overrated/Overhyped to begin with, though I do believe some of these on list will become good NFL PLayers, but it will take 2-3 Years

Cliff is a dingbat — He has yet to inform anyone who would be playing right tackle for the eagles since he wanted nothing to do with lane johnson or any offensive player in the draft. GM Dingbat you have yet to rank the Offensive linemen drafted in 2013 – How about you rank the 32 right tackles in the NFL so we can see where your “eye for talent” has him. And while you are at it rank the 32 Head Coaches because you wanted Gus Bradley and wrote Chip Kelly sucks. Rank the 32 General Managers because Howie sucks too according to you. Additionally Riley Cooper sucks rank the top 64 wide receivers. Zack Ertz sucks and Connor Barwin isn’t all that LOL –

GMCliff,

Those are the official stats from Stats LLC.

Over the first 3 games Johnson allowed 1/2 sack…

Against KC – Justin Houston had a total of 4.5 sacks against the Eagles and only 3 charged to Johnson. One of those came on a play where Vick held the ball for 5.6 seconds and another came on a bad snap where Vick simply ran to the ball and fell on it.

Also, Johnson could not give up 3.5 sacks to San Diego – San Diego only had 1 sack total against the Eagles.

Johnson could not give up 4 to Denver when Denver had 3 sacks total, shared by 4 different players. No sacks allowed by Johnson.

Jabari Parker hasn’t played a game in the Pros yet Big Mhenski. I watched him shoot with no one in his face. He did a good job. But my assessment is that Julius Randle is a much better prospect, as is Andrew Wiggins.

I had a similar conversation with the GCobb Family about Trent Richardson, Thomas Robinson, and Jared Sullinger and how great they were. I didn’t see anything special; nothing personal…I just didn’t see it, and as it turns out, they never had IT, and GMCliff was right again, impartially looking beyond the obvious.

I could still be wrong, and if I am Fine with that, but as of today…In my opinion, there are prospects, that will be better as Pros.

I have him ranked 5th in my top 10 College Basketball Prospects.

GMCliff – OT Michael Oher is having a horrible Season after a poor one last Season and word is that Ravens will let him walk in Free-Agency.. Cannon has been so-so and even the Chiefs DT D Poe has struggled the last month as the entire CHiefs Defense has after a great start to the Season..
Remember 3-4 Drafts Ago, I was clamoring for LB KJ Wright of MIss State who has been tearing it up for the Seahawks
and I also liked CB Richard Sherman from Stanford and had him listed in many a Mock Draft .

With your list above, the Eagels would have needed 8 Picks in the 1st 2 Rounds to get all those Players which isn’t going to happen,,

Oher is a RT, not a LT, which is where the Raven had him playing for a portion of their Superbowl season. He has had many good years, beyond his injury riddled bad seasons.

Cannon is a Guard. The Patriots too played him out of position for a while, playing him at RT for some time, after his illness. When they played him at Guard, he has been a beast.

Poe has been great this year and you know it; Better than Fletcher Cox. Consistency, has been a problem, for most D-Lineman, but I like how you conveniently, speak about his, but hypocritically, say Michael Floyd, is an up an coming Superstar, with 3 decent games in 2 years………….

You were on the money Paul with KJ Wright, and your best one Nick Foles,(MUCH PROPS!!)…….But you are going to have to cut, and paste any mock you had with Richard Sherman, because I don’t recall one, out of the 50 you put out every year.

The point to posting those players, wasn’t to say we would get them in the first round of the draft. The point was the talent that was missed, and we could have had as opposed to the:
Kevin Kolb’s, Danny Watkins, Brandon Grahams, Freddie Mitchell’s, Mike Patterson’s, Brodrick Bunkley’s, Trevor Law’s and Matt McCoy’s of the draft world.

The only first round picks in that list, and the ones you acknowledged were: Richardson, Ansah, Fluker, Poe, Berry, and Oher. The others were in the 2nd, Houston was in the 3rd, and Connon was in the 5th because of his illness.

They were ALL better than what the Eagles drafted. You guys, can nit pick about, their consistency, their good games, their bad games, their lack of stats, etc……But if they were playing for the Eagles, meaning they drafted right…..They would have been a lot better sooner.

Do you remember me saying that Trent Richardson was nothing special? Everyone said I was crazy…remember…and he hasn’t been the only one I have pointed to that was overhyped going into the draft.

GMCliff is better than most give him credit for. I will say it again, I have a pedigree with this, and no GM in any sport gets it right all the time, but I have been right more than I have been wrong. So, that gives me the right to tell the GCobb critics, and he E0Ss of the world to recognize, and bite me……….

Cliff, FYI, Howie does perform( the action or process of carrying out a task or function) his job is to evaluate talent, whether you ,myself or anyone else agrees with his assessments, he still performs, hence a 7-5 record. We kill him when the Eagles are not playing well, give credit to him when they are. I agree with you, Nick Foles is largely responsible for a lot of it, however,so is Chip Kelly, whom Howie wanted! I’m getting my stats from Bleeding Green Nation, which I’m sure they are getting from a stat tracker. Their stats and yours are night and day. Please CITE your source of information of where you are getting your sack numbers from. My stats and Irish’s are congruent. You have credited Lane Johnson with giving up more sacks in a game that was actually given up in total, which is impossible.

I never thought highly of either Devon Still or Trent Richardson coming out of College GMCliff, you should know by now that I am not very high on Players from Penn State Players or really anyone from Alabama who are always overrated and believe most of the bama Players are already maxed out by the time they get to the Pro’s .. When I state that Paul, I’m not totally referring to you. I speaking to all who thought some of these players were all that coming out of college, and have now been proven wrong.

Your guy that year was Cox, not Still, but MANY mocked me for saying he wouldn’t have a good pro career. We both liked him, (Cox) but I wanted Poe because he was bigger. I know what your saying is true my friend.

Nobody agreed with me about Trent Richardson, when I said clearly look beyond the obvious. His Offensive Line Talent, was better than his, and he benefited from it. As did the others that you mentioned.

Do you recall the conversation we had about how some players peak in College, and sometimes you just never know if they will have the same success in the Pro’s…..You agreed with me… …..Do you Remember?

Is there some kind of rule where the Eagles are not allowed to run a two back set? But some muscle in there and run it down their throats in the fourth quarter.
Burn some clock and earn the win.
And how about Chung hitting the ball carrier once in a while instead of his teammate attempting to make the tackle?

Tsjohnson ….I. Don’t see a meltdown, what I do see is a concerted effort with play calling ,too preoccupied with trying to be too conservative …when a first don seals the victory why have nick slide in bounds ,be aggressive there and play downhill ,one way allows an opportunity to get a first down and the other is akin to a prevent defense ,we know to well it only prevents winning …they’ll figure it out ,but it’s not a meltdown ,it’s poor decision making

I agree with you dumserteagle.. poor decisions almost cost us the game…good thing we had that bail out from the refs. Kelly is a brilliant coach who has turned the team around and he is doing a good job at keeping Foles away from really tough situations. He is relying on the running game at the end of games…not letting Foles pass too much, playing it safe and depending on the defense to close games out. Its good strategy and Foles is doing extremely well and getting the wins he needs with the Kelly strategy. We need these wins…and if Foles keeps winning…he should and will have the job next year as well

All of my criticism is directed at Chip Kelly:

For running plays in the 2nd half, I saw this 4 or 5 times: Foles takes the snap under center, with LeSean McCoy lined up right next to him: Foles waits 4 or 5 seconds, then hands off the ball to McCoy who goes straight into the line for a 1 yard, or no gain…Defense had 5 seconds to react…Who called these plays: Kelly, Shurmur or Foles?…You can eliminate Foles.

Also, calling pass plays or the first two downs, then handing the ball off to McCoy on 3rd and long…Recipe for failure, although McCoy did break off a first down run on one series…Recipe for ‘three and out’.

Also, Kelly getting away from the VARIETY in play calling that worked so successfully in the first half and playing a mindless ‘prevent offense’ in the 2nd half that almost cost the Eagles the game.

Let’s not forget Kelly calling a ‘wildcat’ play with 4 yards to go to get in the end zone…WTF is up with Chip Kelly?…And where is the consistent no huddle offense that has worked so well when used?

Defense was excellent, even with the offense leaving them hung out to dry in the 2nd half, keeping them on the field way too long…Special teams looking good, with punter Jones being a standout.

Officiating was a mess.

Kelly did get his TEs involved in the game more, which was vital to the win…Foles was very good, much better than Carson Palmer.

But, because of Kelly’s ‘offensive scheme’, we ended up with another needless nail biter.

Kelly is a brilliant coach who keeps coming up with excellent game plans that keeps Foles away from difficult throws…game plans that play to his strength and gets us wins…Coaching has been excellent. Foles has to get better in the fourth quarter and execute like he did in the previous quarters-the horrible Officiating provided us with a much needed break! I will take all the help we can get for the win!!

What difficult throws are you referring to, the nice touch pass he threw to Desean who had Patrick Peterson on him? or maybe the nice pass he had to thread to Zack Ertz for a first down who also was tightly covered by a defender?. The Eagles have the most +20 yard pass completions in the NFL. None of those passes are difficult though huh? Perhaps Foles just knows how to read defenses and makes anticipation throws because he doesn’t wait for the receivers to clear, but instead knows how to throw an accurate pass. So predictable, so transparent you continue to be…..lol.

Nice article Denny, but I’ll take from here….

Somebody has to teach Chip Kelley that the days of 50 point blow outs in college are over and you have to learn how to take time off the clock.

Go down the road to NFL Films and get Sabol to give you some film of the Bill Walsh coached 49ers. Once he got a lead…forget it. Dink pass here, run there, the clock disappeared.

Back to you Denny…

That’s another home win for the Birds!!! The whole game-day experience is so much better when the Eagles win. It’s even less aggravating sitting in traffic.

People should remember that the Cardinals are a great team that beat the Panthers and Colts (two playoff teams) handily. That was a hard fought win.

Kelly has to continue being aggressive with his play calling in the fourth quarter…. Throw on first and second down like we did earlier in the game. With 10 minutes left in the game we wasted a possession running plays into a wall.

Anyway, great win!

It’s a shame Graham can’t drop in coverage because he plays physical and has knack for rushing the passer. I suspect his lack of coverage ability is what keeps him off the field on most snaps & probably off the team next season. Don’t forget either that D-Jax had a punt return TD called back on a questionable clipping call that would have iced this game sooner. Not every game is going to be a Picasso. Foles will throw a pick at some point, maybe two. Doesn’t mean he’s not the guy. Most of us thought this team would be 6-10. The team & coach are exceeding most fans expectations in a re-building year. We’ve found a coach, a young QB, & some young defensive players all in the same season. It takes some teams years. Next step, fix the nuances of the offense (bleeding the clock etc.). For the 1st time in a while the Eagles seem to be pointed in the right direction.

mhenski

December 1, 2013 9:42 pm

Hey Denny. Regarding this paragraph

I encourage u to go back and rewatch that play. Desean had at least 3 yards on 2 defenders and all foles had to do was drop in the ball for a huge gain. Unfortunately he got hit on the throwing arm/shoulder which altered that throw. To me it looked like a great decision with great vision but bad luck with the hit but then good luck with the hold. Rewatch and let me know what you think.

Great write up aside from that IMO.

After looking at the playoff picture the Eagles definitely need to go 3-1 their last 4 and hope Dallas goes 2-2 with a loss to the Eagles week 17. Looking at Carolina and SF schedule they have the inside track to the WC with Carolina needing to lose to NO twice for the Eagles to over take them in a tie breaker which Im not sure that even would secure it. SF schedule doesn’t seem to allow them 2 loses in their last 4. 9-7 definitely wont get you in and 10-6 might not either depending on tie-breakers. The early discussion of 8-8, 9-7 getting you in playoffs in NFC East and NFC is a thing of the past. This is all a mute point if the Eagles win out which is alot to ask of this team who would have won 8 in a row to do that. That’s really not realistic IMO.

Did he make mistakes? Of course he did. All QBs do. But against the Cards he had the 5th highest comp%, highest amount of tds, lowest amount of ints, 2nd highest passer rating of all QBs the Cards faced this year.

He played a very strong game against a decent team (though didn’t we all know Palmer would self-destruct in a big game on the road? I certainly did)

Foles made mistakes against a solid D, but he pretty much made less than any other QB in the league (again).

I was still disheartened about the stupid wildcat call. If you’re so enamoured with bullshit running Qb options then at least put Vick back out there. That stupid play killed that drive.

Lotta anger in here after a big home wine against a good team. Loved how much pressure that the defense got in the game. Yes they gave up some plays, but you aren’t gonna shut out those big WRs the whole game. Foles played well in the game and they won. What was the most exciting to me is that they spread the ball around and finally got the TEs involved.

Those four calls might have shifted the balance not only in yesterday’s game, but also in the playoff race. The Cardinals fell to 7-5, just behind the Eagles (also 7-5) in the race for the second wild-card slot, which the 49ers own for the moment. The win gives the Eagles the tiebreaker advantage over Arizona.

The win, and how it unfolded, indicated more than the Eagles’ emerging capacity to hold on to a lead late. It indicated that the league and its officials consider them more than a Flavor of the Month; more than Machine Gun Kelly’s mad experiment

Theone,

It’s a conspiracy by the NFL to make Nick Foles look good so Michael Vick can’t get his job back. The NFL (despite employing over 70% black players) is a racist organization.

Write to your congressman and complain…

“It was definitely holding,” said Avant, straight-faced.

Now, Avant is a man of God. He spoke on a Sunday evening, no less. Perhaps his faith led him to temper his assertion: “In this league, we don’t know what holding even is anymore. Thank God for them being able to have eyes at the end of the game.”

For all those Andy Reid fans, it’s looking like déjà vu out in KC isn’t it? The fat man still can’t beat teams with winning records, still can’t make halftime adjustments. I loved how those Reid fans were on here in the beginning of the season when KC was winning taking about how we can now see from him winning thar it was never Andy and it was the front office, who’s to blame now? I’ll take Chip any day of the week and very glad we have him.

Don’t forget, Reid beat Chip Kelly and the Eagles at the Linc earlier in the year. He also beat the Cowboys.

I’m glad we have Chip Kelly now, but I hold no resentment for Andy Reid. The Eagles won a lot of games with Andy Reid as their coach.

All of us here have a tendency to nitpick and over analyze…But the Eagles appear to be making progress, and Kelly and his staff have done a very good job on emphasizing fundamentals, conditioning and concentration…Although there were a number of questionable penalties called against the Birds, I didn’t see any blatant bone head penalties, like we saw under Andy Reid so many times…The Kurt Coleman penalty was questionable.

No surprise some of our so-called fans are complaining more profusely about the officiating than the Cardinals are…

“We played good enough to play close but not good enough to win,” Arians said. “We self-inflicted ourselves with wounds in the first half that cost us points.”

“I’ll say this, the refereeing did not determine us losing the football game,” Arians said. “We didn’t make enough plays.”

Liking what I’m seeing from the front 7. They are winning us these games, with a very weak secondary. I also like what I’m seeing from Davis. I have to eat crow on him, because, he’s making due, with some mediocre rotational players. I’m impressed. Does anyone else notice, that the improvements in the defense, & the winning coincides with both the dumping of Sopoaga, & the starting of Foles?

Logan is playing out of position, & isn’t much better than Sopoaga, but he’s younger, more athletic, & maybe he can get better aainst the run, because right now, he ain’t a true NT, that stuffs/ clogs the middle, & he doesn’t make many plays. Cox, Thornton are beasts, & now that all our LB’s are healthy, Davis is mixing & matching them very well. I can’t believe the play of Cole. And we had a Graham sighting????

Gotta respectfully disagree with you D, I think Logan is holding his own and not getting pushed around, at times penetrating the line. Definitely holding ground and clogging that middle up pretty good. The Eagles aren’t getting gashed all day long thankfully.
How about that Brandon Graham. It will be interesting to see what the eagles do with him, resign him or let him go. He can rush the passer, he’ll never be a cover guy though. I think he should be used like Woodley in Pittsburgh, not saying he is on Woodley’s level, but as me and Paulman keep saying, these guys need time to develop into their roles.

With all the focus on chip and his offense the defense has been nothing short of awesome the last 6 weeks or so– they are forcing turnovers and the oppossing QB is spending a lot of time on his Ass– i can’t believe that cole and graham are ‘fitting’– barwin does whatever assignment they give him and does it well– get wolf back next week and we are in even better shape!

Punter won the game …he’s pro bowl special..you combine field position ,and strong defense and a qb that’s mistake prone ,you are what. You are , a dangerous team on the rise….officiating sucked throughout the league ,you hope it balances itself out,but we have short memories of replacement refs. The coaches are on a learning curve ,readily improving ,making half time adjustments ,unlike some …they’ll have there hands full down the stretch ,but winning builds confidence that can’t be measured and at the moment ,another win at home puts them in position in December …weeks ago we’d all have jumped on board ..keep the posts football related guys …the power of anonymity makes some us full of bravado and ignorance ,I try to have my son read the blogs and some of it is now getting way off,track..I see enough ass holes in everyday life ,let’s let sports and our beloved birds be the focus..happy healthy holidays to you all.

1 (4) Johnson, Lane OT- Young, getting better, the sky is the limit for this young man. For sure, not a bust and…. could be the anchor of our line for years to come.

2 (35) Ertz, Zach TE- I see him being a super star. He has hands, quick feet and is smart. Playing good football so far and… just had his first MAJOR day as an NFL player. He is going to be our red zone man and the key up the seam that will rack up the yards.

3 (67) Logan, Bennie DT- I believe he is playing out of position.. he’s not a true NT- then again…. this is not your normal 3-4.

4 (98) Barkley, Matt QB- This one may have been a mistake.. because….. if Foles is our guy, and they will almost for sure sign a qb AND we need a vet so…. not sure what happens here.

5 (136) Wolff, Earl SS- Solid- great learner and has lots of tools. Im not sold on him being the starter for years to come. I see him more as a #3 safety but… who knows yet. I would love to see them add a star vet and draft a good young prospect and let them battle it out.

Im not going to give grades next to each player but…. so far this has been the best draft we have had in some time.

a few cleanups….

– I think Benne is playing very well and is contributing for sure…. we will see him on this D for years to come,I just think they still look for a true NT.

– it should have said…. i they will almost for sure DRAFT a QB (but not very high), AND they need a vet…..

A QB I think would be a perfect back-up for Foles and could handle Kelly’s Offense like a glove is QB Jordan Lynch from Northern Illinois University a 3 Year Starter- a Winner & Leader and Smart Kid, Not real big at 6-0 215lbs, with a quick release, accurate arm, but not a deep thrower by any stretch and should be on the Draft Board come 6th/7th Round and would be strictly a back-up/spot starter in case of an injury
The Eagles will need to develop and play Barkley next Pre-Season and if he looks good, then they can trade him to a Team in need of more West-Coast System QB and get a late Round Draft Pick back in return..

Another QB for the late ROunds (6 or 7) is Casey Pachall from TCU who at 6-4 230lbs has the size and has experience running the fast paced- spread offense for TCU and can handle the ball very well..

Vick will be gone, a vet will come in to backup Foles and there is NO way we dont have a running QB on our roster. Barkley fights it out with a 4th rounder and Barkley gets traded. Thats my story.

I seen a conversation a few posts back about running the ball at the end of the game. Clearly- the eagles tried to do it yesterday and I dont feel it worked very well. Here are a few thoughts on this subject just for Monday fun…

1) Hi, my name is Brown and I want to be McCoy!!
Brown needs to be running up the guy with little option. He should be the wrecking ball used to end games. If he cant do this… we need to find someone who can. This Oline seems to be capable to push.. so… he needs to stop trying to run outside- OR- Chip needs to stop calling outside runs for him.

2) Part 2 of this (after we get brown rolling) is to use the PA and hit our TE’s. SImple easy throws where Foles puts the ball ONLY where the TE can get it. Basic football here. Foles is very capable of running this.

3) The RO- IF… IF….. the birds want to run the RO play…. Foles should not be running it at the end of games like that. Put Vick in? Fine.. i dont care either way…. BUT… the idea of the RO is that you really want to create a hole for the RB (mcCoy). Thats why they use it. I dont care about Mike Vick being out there… but if its clear that the RO is going to be run for a series AT THE END OF THE GAME TO KILL THE CLOCK…. do WHATEVER you need to to get us the win. I dont want to hear about momentum either because Its not like the O is out there for a long time anyway.

4) Stop snapping the ball with 19-27 secs left. It was STUPID playcalling by Kelly or whomever to run it that way. Get to the line…. let it run down…. snap.

move on from vick please… foles does fine with the RO (again its one play) he pulled it two straight plays for a first down.
they will refine their 4 minute offense– you all remember that they did a 9 minute drive to end the GB game? or did you forget? they are young and learning — this is part of it– hell most of us thought it’d be a 4-5 win season so learning how to close out at 7-5 is a luxury!
