Eagles, Nate Allen Agree To One-Year Deal

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles-MinicampThe Eagles and safety Nate Allen agreed to a one-year deal on Monday morning.

Allen, a disappointing second-round pick from the 2010 draft, had enjoyed the best season of his career in 2013. He became less of liability on the field, and was adequate as a starter.

The move gives the Eagles some additional insurance and flexibility at the safety position. Allen will compete with Earl Wolff and whoever the Eagles might add through the draft for a starting position alongside Malcolm Jenkins. While not a playmaker, he is a guy who is familiar with the defense and his teammates. The Eagles needed to add another veteran safety to their mix, and there was no one better on the open market to fill that role than Allen.

I guess their going to tell us he fits their scheme. All I saw from Allen last year was a guy who got to the receiver AFTER the receiver caught the ball, I guess that’s considered an improvement. So lets see, our D sucked last year and it was suppose to be a priority and so far the only upgrades we have is Malcom Jenkins and Nate Allen, way to go Eagles, maybe we improve for having the 30th ranked D to the 27th.

He is like Todd Pinkston, no one wants him on the team and he just won’t go away —
I understand he is just too big of a bargain not to resign at just a million for a year, he just brings back associated memories of Dawkins, McNabb, and Earl Thomas I wish to forget.

The bottom line is, with him in our backfield last year we were ranked as one of the worse, you don’t bring him back just like you arent bringing Coleman, Anderson back, you move forward, as for no one out there, who’s fault is that? Forget the big names, their was guys out there that were an upgrade. I guess he’s going to keep the seat warm the first five games like last year until whatever rookie they draft is ready? That’s great! Him n Jenkins are really going to put fear in other teams.

booooooooooooooooooo

Seahawks agreed to terms with K Steven Hauschka to a three-year, $9.15 million contract.
The deal includes $3.35 million guaranteed. Hauschka has quietly emerged as one of the game’s most reliable kickers, going 57-of-62 (91.9 percent) on field goals over the last two seasons. That includes an 11-of-12 mark from 40-49 yards out and a perfect 3-of-3 from 50+ last season. Hauschka’s average annual salary of $3.05 million is in line with recent deals signed by Jets K Nick Folk and Panthers K Graham Gano. Hauschka was fantasy’s No. 4 kicker last season, a ranking he won’t have trouble repeating.

No surprise here, there was no way that Pete Carroll & Seahawks were losing Kicker Hauschka , he’s a Top 3 Kicker in the NFL
and.. I hope the Eagles don’t end up wasting a Roster Spot for a designate Long Kicker for Kick-Offs like some Teams do..
They need an upgrade..

It also will be Allen’s first time with Eagles having the sme Secondary Coach
For 2 Years in a Row with Todd Lyght as the Eagles have gone thru
4 Def Secondary Coach’s in the last 5 Years which has been one of their problems to begin with…
The Coach from Bears/Bills for 1 Season, then the Coach from Raiders for 1 Season who was absolutely horrible, then newbie Coach Zordich, then Bowles for 1 Season and now a good one in Todd Lyght who should bring some stability back

So what your saying is, as long as we don’t play against a top passing team were good. That’s good to hear Paulman, lets hope we can avoid those teams, lets not be like the Seahawks who told the top O to bring it on, lets not n like the Broncos or Pats that saw what the Seahawks did n said we have to do the same, lets just be average in that department and hope our O gets us through (see Broncos)

Eagles failed to address a bigger weakness and that’s a strong consisten Pass-Rush so to be honest, I don’t think it’s going to matter a whole lot who the Safeties are.. 37 Sacks last year is about
Less than 2.5 Sacks per game and that’s not going to
Cut it regardless of opposing QB (remember Matt Cassell lighting them up
Last year) which is why I have the Eagles ranked as a 2nd Tier Team in the NFC for 2014.. They are not built for Prime-Time yet
Am I happy this, no, but am I realistic about their chances,
Yes.. They should win the NFC Least due to their Offense
But until they get a good Pass-Rush, they are not stopping the Good Teams/QB with or without a big time Safety like Jarius Byrd anyways
Build from the DL out.. They have 3 Goid Young DL but in a 3-4c
You need at least 5-6 DL and 2 supreme Pass-Rushers and the Eagles have neither so they will get at the line of Scrimmage again by more Physical Teams like the Saints,49ers or Seahawks & Packers with RB Lacey & a healthy Rogers Playing..

The Eagles Defensive coaches proved that they could coach. This was a super scrub defense that played much better by the end of the year. The Eagles have signed big fast average defensive backs. If we could win with those super scrubs they will coach up those top athletes with NFL experience. Seattle has a bunch of low draft pick and free agents on defense, but they are athletes. The Eagles will do the same. They can’t sign expensive players knowing that they are going to have to pay FOLES 15-20 million dollars next season. And say goodbye to “boney James” desean jackson. That greedy bum is history. Hasn’t lifted a weight or had a sandwich since he arrived. I love that Chip Kelley is paying attention to special teams. That is how George Allen took the Redskins to the Superbowl with a bunch of scrubs. The Eagles have signed all their good players. That counts as well. We have not lost anybody and have added better players in the secondary. Other teams are losing their starters. This is light years better than “I’m happy with the receivers we have” Andy Reid mentality. Can’t wait for the draft. Now we don’t have to reach for a over priced college safety, and may still take the Baylor safety in the 3rd round.

It’s the mentality of the head coach Dcar, these cats egos take precedent over what they should really do, all this nonsense about guys not fitting the defensive system, what system? Plug and Play meanwhile the offense gets the attention because of the super genius that Chip Kelly thinks he is. Same thing with Buddy Ryan and countless other coaches who’s agenda took center stage instead of common sense.

Guys are you listening to what your saying? We got run over last year in the playoffs, we didn’t do one thing to improve that! We couldn’t get off the field all season on 3rd downs, we were ranked in the top 5 in passing against besides points allowed, we needed a major overhaul especially at safety, we have Jenkins n Allen and a special teamer who moonlights as a safety n you guys are saying everything is good, what are you guys smoking? Whatever it is I want some.

They have 3 in this Range and need to get 2 more
Either by Trading back from #22 or packaging some Players who are
Tradeable, with team friendly Contracts like a B Graham or a V Curry or a Bryce Brown and get another Draft Pick ..

Solid signing by the Eagles. Jenkins will only make Allen better at the safety position. I know he isn’t that hard hitting safety everyone wants for him to be, but with 1yr under Davis’s belt, and the addition of Jenkins is good enough for me at this point. 1yr deal is a no brainer

Man it obvious what Big is saying is true. And that being the case, it is what it is. This is the way Chip wants his team shaped. Now having said that building a defense with average players and scrubs is not cool. Their entire secondary right now is just that. You guys think that’s okay then fine. I have come around to agree with you guys about Byrd. You guys were right they don’t need a contract like that right now. But there were better players to be had at reasonable prices and they decided against it. You can win games with an average defense if your offense is that good. But when they need the D to step up like in that playoff game against New Orleans. Those key stops in big moments won’t be there. No difference makers will bite them at several points in the season.

I am not saying this is going to be good Don, but it is what it is and for now they have 5 Safeties under Contract and are finished until Draft Time as far adding anymore to the Secondary.. I also stated they the Safety a group will be exposed by the better Offenses/QB’s on their Schedule and I also stated that they gave done absolutely nothing in addressing their weak Pass-Rush and until they do, the Eagles Secondary will be vulnerable no matter who is back their at Safety..

This is a good move on March 17th.. It would have been horrible on March 11th. You gave the guy time to see the market and get motivated to improve how others view him around the league and now he is back for 1 year if he makes it out of camp. You know the locker room part with him and he did improve over last season. You are also putting him on the field with a legit starter not a scrub. This should allow Nate to focus on his JOB….see also DO YOUR JOB.. and not worry about what chung is up too.

He may not even beat out what ever rookie we take in round 2 through 4.

Louisville’s Calvin Pryor had a very good workout today per NFL Channel Coverage.Mayock and Charles Smith feel he and Dix are sure fire 1st round Picks between the 10th-20th Selections of the First Round

QB Bridgewater was so-so in his throwing & running drills..
It looked like he was late with the ball on most of his short/intermediate routes
Where receivers had to slow up up to catch his passes
He threw some nice deep passes.. I believe he will be a lot like Geno Smith which is a work in progress and nowhere near a “Franchise QB” at his stage of develop.. Bridgewater weighs only 208lbs and there is no way he would last, durability wise.. He’s a good 2 years away at least..

Best overall performance in Louisvilke today was my sleeper target Player
DE/OLB Marcus Smith (6-4 265lbs) who participated in Field Drills at both the DE & OLB positions and was very impressive per NFL Channels Coverage Teams..Marcus Smith has probably moved up from a 3rd Rounder to a 2nd Round Prosoect per Mike Mayock
Coach Kelly/GM Roseman were on hand

Florida State’s Workout Day is Tuesday or Wed
With lots of prospects, WR Benjamin,DT Jernigan,
LB Chris Jones, DB L Joyner and highly rated OT

The 2 other WR’s on their Roster (Pilares & McNutt)
Have a combined 5 Receptions in the NFL
Panthers lost LaFell, Ginn Jr, Hixon to Free-Agency
And Released Steve Smith..
Cam Newton now has no one to throw it to..

And how does all of the moves thus far, help better the last place rated pass defense? Jenkins, is a minor upgrade over Chung. Carroll is a special teamer, & now we get the stiff Allen back. Another off-season of lateral movements, minor upgrades, penny pinching, & nickel & dime BS! But, all of the lemmings will sop it up, & tell us, “it’s all part of the plan”, “be patient”, “let it play out”, “it’s part of the scheme”. They have no interest in putting together the best team on the field, & field a championship team. GTFOH. Meanwhile Henery still on the team, with no kickers let on the market. Isn’t Clemons, & Ihedigbo better than wasting another year on Allen? I’m sick & tired of the BS!

good decision to bring Nate Allen back. I wanted him back as insurance to any moves we made this off season at safety. He showed promise as a rookie then got hurt. His second year you could tell he was not trusting his knee enough to go all out. year 3 the team was horrible as a whole with bad coaching ect. finally with some consistency last year he played a lot better. His tackling is still shaky especially one on one but his coverage is pretty solid. He is the type of guy from this point on will be a solid pro and teams will always sign him when they need a safety. I didn’t want another team to get him after we dealt with all the growing pains of his career. Now at least we get a one year rental out of a guy who has learned a lot so far in his short career. believe it or not a 4th year guy with NFL experience is better than any guy we could draft right away. We need to address the pass rush early in the draft this move helps us do so and we could still address safety in the 2nd-3rd rds. People get so up in arms over non issues. What game did Nate Allen cost us last year? certainly wasn’t the Saints game. The secondary played pretty well. its almost like some of you just quote typical nonsense with no real thought lol.

The Eagles added 3 Safeties in the last Week JH,
That changes the Draft Strategy as I said it would, So again, you have no real news here..
You keep saying Flip-Flopper and have no Clue or Understanding..
I have stated from the Get Go, right after the Eagles Final Game that we all would get a clearer picture of Eagles Draft Strategy once the Free-Agency Peroid came and went and now we are getting closer to the end of active part of Free-Agency and now look to the Draft for Prospects & Upgrades to Improve the Overall Roster

I believe by waht’s occurred over the last month is that the Eagles will address the Def Line for they have to improve their Pass-Rush and DE Depth.. The Eagles Resigned 2 of their WR’s , Extended Deals with 2 OL and added 4-5 Player to their Secondary while Improving their Special Teams in Resigning Punter Jones, adding Maragos,Braman,Carroll and Sproles
Now the last Positional Group that needs adressing is the Defensive Line, so now I lean towards a DT,DE,OLB & OL as the early Round Selections in this Draft which is real thin along the DL so if the Eagles want some good young Prospects, they need to do so early for good WR’s<CB,s & Safety's can be selected in the 4th/5th/6th Rounds, but not DL which really thins out after the 1st 75-85 Selections

Updated Selections based on Rumors

Eagles Trade #22 & RB Bryce Brown to the Indy Colts (who don't have a 1st Rounder) for their #2nd Round (58th Overall) and #4th Round (122nd Overall) and their 3rd Round Pick in 2015

Eagles PIcks in the Early Rounds (2nd thru 4th)

2nd Rd (54th) – DE Kareem Martin – (UNC 6-6' – 272lbs)
2nd Rd (58th) – Guard Brandon Thomas – (Clemson 6-3 315lbs)
3rd Rd (86th) – DT DaQuan Jones – (Penn State 6-4 322lbs)
4th Rd (118th) – ILB Christian Jones – (FLorida State 6-3 240lbs)
4th Rd (122nd) – CB Phillip Gaines – (Rice 6-0 195lbs)
5th Rd (150th) – WR kevin Norwood – (Alabama 6-2 200lbs)

Later Rounds for Depth at DL/OL & QB

paul they added 3 safeties. A stiff, re-signed a stiff for 1 year, & a special teams safety only. How does that change their draft strategy? They don’t have 1 difference making, playmaker on the roster. It changes nothing! If Dix, &/or Pryor is still on the board, & they don’t trade the pick, they better draft them.

They are going into OTA/Camp with the 4 Safety’s Battling it out for the Starters position’s (Jemkins,Wolff,Marago & Allen)
They will add another Safety in the MId-Rounds..
I have come to the conclusion that the Eagles simply don’t Value the Safety Position enough to warrant a 1st Round PIck to Secure one..again, this is not what I would do for I have been screaming for Pryor since mid-January, but I think this is what the Eagles will do.. They will not be bringing in a Clemons, Inhedigbo in .. They are done Free-Agency wise outside of possibly a Veteran DL

JH nothing has changed they will take the best player available at 22 regardless of position so it’s WR, S or DL , if the first pick isn’t Pryor they will move early to get Buchannon in the 2nd round. BTW not calling Nate Allen a stiff but that dude has 0 instincts to be a really effective safety, his problem is he was a QB his entire life until he got to college so he has no aggresiveness or natural instincts to be a good NFL safety.

Good stuff BigL..

Its interesting, even though Nate Allen has been in the league for a few years, he still is growing as a safety.. Like you said he has more of a QB mentality, he’s thinking way too much when he’s out there..

I think he needs to read and react better. I like the idea of them coaching him up in this system one more year. They gotta try to get what they can out of him he was a 2nd round pick (same with Brandon Graham who was a 1strounder)

Let’s see what Nate can do with his back against the wall and competition all around him.. I feel we may get his best year to date..

Big, you said, “not calling Nate Allen a stiff but that dude has 0 instincts to be a really effective safety, his problem is he was a QB his entire life until he got to college so he has no aggressiveness or natural instincts to be a good NFL safety.” That’s the definition of a STIFF! LOL, WTF are you talking about? XD

Worse then that he isn’t even a effective special teams guy because of his aversion to contact. So he either starts or gets cut during camp.

I have mixed feelings about this signing…Allen was more consistent in his play than previous years, but yet still mediocre at best. He still seems to be out of position and is not good in reading the run and coming up and making tackles…I believe Wolff is a better player, better instincts and more physical…hope to see Wolff starting this season…

If they think they’re set at safety, I hope they’ll be happy with 3rd degree burns all year again. Better stock up on the burn ointments!

Hahaha I agree they need to add another safety but I think they feel they’ll be fine after their latest additions..they signed 2 in FA and brought Allen back..

I still see them drafting one in the 2nd or 3rd but I’d be shocked if its in the 1st at this point.. I think they gotta go big WR, avant was cut, Damiris Johnson is probably next, they need at least 2 more WRs..

They also need 1 more corner since they signed Carroll already. And of course a outside rushing LB but I think they may trade for one because their aren’t many in the draft unless they try to trade up for Mack (haha joke not gonna happen) or Barr..

If they feel fine after signing Jenkins, & bringing back Nate “deep fryer” Allen, then all power to them. They better pray to the almighty, that Dix, or Pryor falls to them, or they get lucky & Buchannon falls to our 2nd pick, or they’re $#!t out of luck with top notch prospects. I think Reynolds, Bailey, & Dixon have a chance to have solid future, but Dix, Pryor, & Buchannon are plug & play, right now. Got a bad feeling, that we get another head scratching, infuriating draft. Hope I’m wrong, but the off-season is thus far, very disappointing.
