Notes From The Phillies’ 4-3 Win Over Miami

Chase Utley The Philadelphia Phillies won their third straight game on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Marlins 4-3. Their record improves to 6-6.

  • Kyle Kendrick pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks. Kendrick struck out seven, and settled in nicely after allowing a run in each of the first two innings.
  • For the second straight game, the bullpen did a nice job shutting down the opposing lineup and giving the offense a chance to come back and win the game. B.J. Rosenberg, Antonio Bastardo, and Jonathan Papelbon each tossed a scoreless inning.
  • Bastardo received the win, and Papelbon earned his third save of the year.
  • Chase Utley’s bat is simply on fire right now. Utley went 3-4 with a walk, and hit his third homer and his sixth double of the year. His average increased to .500.
  • Ryan Howard went 1-4, and got the Phillies on the board with a solo home run in the third inning.
  • Backup catcher Wil Nieves got the start to rest Carlos Ruiz, and went 3-4 with two RBI’s.
  • Cody Asche went 0-2 with two walks.
  • Domonic Brown went 1-3 with a walk, and scored a run.
  • Tony Gwynn started again in centerfield, and went 3-5 with three singles.
  • The Phils went just 2-10 with runners in scoring position.

Final Thoughts

After a wretched series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Phils did well to bounce back with a three-game sweep over a division opponent.

They beat up on one of the game’s best young pitchers (Jose Fernandez), and won a couple of tight, one-run games on Saturday and Sunday.

They’ve evened their record at .500, and now they’ll have an opportunity to make a statement against the Atlanta Braves over the next four games.

The Phillies have gotten some really nice contributions from some of their bench players early in the year. Tony Gwynn has proven to be a really nice fourth outfielder, and has done well in place of Ben Revere at the top of the order. Wil Nieves filled in today for Carlos Ruiz, and gave the team three hits and two RBI’s. Even John Mayberry has chipped in some big hits here and there.

The bench has been one of this team’s problems over the last few years. We’ve had to endure a great deal of do-nothings like Laynce Nix, Ty Wigginton, and Ezequiel Carrera, and its nice to see some guys come in off of the bench and take advantage of playing time given to them.

A Nice bounce back series sweep over the Marlins and was much needed after losing 4 in a Row.. The Braves coming in hot also after sweeping the overrated NAtinals who playing very flat out of the gate this Season ..
Phils/Braves will see lots of Runs and both Offenses are hitting well..
As usual, it will come down to the Bullpens in this Series as neither teams has Standout Starting Pitching.. Look for games to come down to the 7th/8th & 9th Innings and be some close, exciting 1-2 Run games

As expected,
Phils can’t hit decent Pitching and their Bullpen is getting abused by the Braves Hitters. Dan Uggla would be a HOF if he played versus the Phils 162 Games, he always hits well at CBP..
What the attendance, see a lot of empty seats at the Park
It’s going to be long Sumner for the Phils

As I stated, Dan Uggla simply Kills the Phils
Always has since his Marlin Days.. Good Grief.
