Notes From The Phillies’ 3-1 Loss To Colorado

Dominic BrownThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Saturday night, falling to the Rockies 3-1. Their record drops to 7-10.

  • Kyle Kendrick pitched seven solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Kendrick didn’t walk any batters.
  • Jake Diekman threw a scoreless eighth inning.
  • The offense managed just five hits.
  • Jimmy Rollins had two of the five hits, and drove in the team’s only run.
  • Marlon Byrd went 0-3 and worked the team’s only walk.
  • Cody Asche went 1-3 and scored a run.
  • Domonic Brown had a bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth inning, but swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into a double-play.
  • The Phillies’ offense had five 1-2-3 innings on the night.

Final Thoughts

Four straight games with just one run or less.

Pathetic.

The lineup is just completely devoid of any pop. It’s a bunch of singles-hitters.

No one in this starting lineup is capable of regularly picking up extra-base hits, or launching a ball out of a park.

This is what happens when you put together a lineup with a lot of guys that are past their prime, and lacking in legitimate young talent.

Chase Utley had been the only hitter that has performed at a pretty high level consistently through the first few weeks of the season. Ryan Howard is batting just .217. Marlon Byrd is at .242. Carlos Ruiz is struggling to stay above the Mendoza line at .205.

Older guys are only getting older, and showing more and more that they can’t power this lineup like they did five years ago. Younger guys like Dom Brown and Cody Asche aren’t bringing any kind of spark to the table. The result is an inconsistent lineup that is going to experience painful droughts like the one its currently caught in.
