Predraft Analysis: David Yankey

yankeyDavid Yankey is tall, quick on his feet, high football I.Q. and a hard working offensive guard from Stanford University.  He has experience in a pro-style offense playing both guard and tackle.  Expected to go in the third-fourth round range, the former Pac-12 standout could be on the radar of the Eagles.

There are notable questions and looming concerns with our current offensive guards.  Herremans skill set has declined, Mathis is not happy about his current contract and both are over 30 years of age.  Add in the fact that Herremans contract was given to him at the “offensive tackle” rate when he had made that switch a few seasons back; there is now a considerable “overpaid” cap figure for a regressing offensive guard.

Even with this predicament for the Eagles, this is a solid group who has built terrific chemistry.  It should not be overlooked that there is cohesion amongst the o-line.  They have a familiarity with the physical shape needed for the up-tempo style of this offense.  They understand the ins and outs of the hand gestures/cue cards provided to them by the coaching staff.  The projected starting quarterback, Nick Foles, he is still young, and having a reliable wall in front of him is necessary for him to improve on his 2013 season.

There has been no further “trade” mention of the Evan Mathis from the report he was seeking a new contract and a 3rd/4th round selection the Eagles were looking for as compensation.  With the recent history and quiet stance of the franchise, “no news” is not necessarily good news; or perhaps it maybe this time around.  Their hush-hush ways leave unnecessary speculation for an impactful player like Mathis; and in turn, teammates become targets by the media for further insight on the matter.

With the Eagles current state of their offensive line, this should be an area that is viewed as one of our strongest position groups.

If they elect to draft an offensive guard, Anthony Steen out of the University of Alabama would be a player I would target.  He spent two seasons under the guidance of our offensive line coach and former Alabama offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

Jeff Stoutland was a terrific hire for the Eagles. Cyrus Kouandjio game collapsed without his presence while the Eagle OL flourished. I thought the Eagles would go OL in the first but the extension to Jason Peters delays that possibility. Gabe Jackson and Cyril Richardson are gigantic humans who need a huddle and probably aren’t system fits. There is nothing wrong with the talent of a DJ Fluker or Larry Warford but they huddle up guys. Chip needs endurance lineman like Kelce and Johnson. Jason Peter could play any system.

Stop talking like you have a clue…You don’t know what your talking about…

and I like how you reference GMCliff guys – Fluker, Warford, Richardon, and Jackson – Humor us, who would YOU suggest they draft to play the position?? Everyone I mention is this post, is a better player than any you would suggest……

I also suggested Kelechi Osemele, who some said wouldn’t be able to handle the position, and he started all year right into the SuperBowl – another Big guy that can move – and play in any system. Herremans, is also 6-5 330 –

You have no idea who can play in his system, and who can’t…

I like QB Matthews from Cornell,
Tall, good Vision, strong arm and can make NFL throws with high Foitball IQ and solid Leadership skills and will be a nice pick-up for a Team looking to groom a young QB for 2-3 Years..
I would not be surprised to see the Patriots,49ers or even the Cowboys
Or Chiefs Select him in the 4th/5th Round..
Has good feet for a big guy also.. I believe he’s 6-4″ and about 230lbs

Guard David Yankey is a real Athlete at teh Guard position
6-6′ & 315 lbs, Runs a 5.48 40 Time, 28 1/2″ Vertical Jump, 22 Reps at 225lbs
(which is a tad light for a OL) .. He’s smart, athletic, player who is very polished and a high Football IQ… What scouts see as some weaknesses is his lack of Fire, lack of focus and finishing off plays until the whistle blows.. Almost a little too cerebreal and not emotional enough per some who would like to see more fire from him… Blocking out in Space and on Screens or up to the 2nd & 3rd Level’s is very impressive, but lack a strong punch and will at teh point of attack is what many reports summarized about his Play
Projects as a 3rd and probably best suited for an up-tempo style of Offense where speed, leverage and athleticism are required ..

I saw on ESPN today….Mark Schlereth (Stink) said that after watching tape he thinks Yankey is not that good at all and is going to have a hard time making it the NFL. He is to stiff and not athletic at all as far as being an OL.

Many times you hear this about Stanford OL coming out,
is that they are a little stiff and lack good hip movement and overall athleticism. I am not so sure that their Power Running Scheme and straight line Blocking techniques that they focus on Is not a cause for this
Most NFL Teams now utilize the Zone-Blocking Scheme which does require more athleticism and working angles & shielding in unison then it does Mano on Mano blocking..
I believe there are 3-4 Pro-Bowl Type Guards in this Draft
Xavier Su’a’-Filo (UCLA)
Gabe Jackson (Ole Miss)
Joel Bitonio (Nevada) though he nay start out at RT
And Tra Turner from LSU who is still raw, but very quick and strong
and Injured Guard Brandon Thomad (Clemson) who unfortunately tore his ACL in College Work Day a few weeks back and will probably miss the entire 2014 Season, but 2-3 Years down the road,
I like all these Guards as High-End NFL Players

This vote by the majority of right thinking Americans in Michigan, black and white, recognize that race is no longer a valid argument for the subjugation of blacks, slavery is ancient history. I have a few questions…..is knowing how to spell a players name, knowing what college he went to, looking up his measurables, knowing his position, and being able to Google him to read up on him, count as scouting? Does watching a player play 1 game mean you scouted him?
Another question…..isn’t the whole idea of having a Mock Draft is to know the team and their needs and picking a player that fits the team? Or is it just typing in a name of someone YOU want to see the team draft?

No it’s not Iggles27
I do think by watching a Player play, Reading up on them, getting comment’s from other Teammates,Opponents,Coach’s,Scouts, Scouting Service’s on a Player all helps me as a “lay person” to get a feel for a Player.. I like to learn where they Played, versus what type of Competition, the Coaching Staff they receiving their Coaching, what system are they Playing in College, how did they do in the “big-games” and against similar type of Talent and Competition..
But it’s not Scouting where Scouts spend Hours of breaking down Film,
Knowing what Systems the Players are in relation to what their responsibilities are in that system.. Scouts Interview Coach’s, learn about a Player’s past, motivations, harships, strengths, weaknesses that us “lay people” would have little to no insight about …

A Play has to past the “eye test” but many times what Players are asked to do in College is not going to be the smae thing once they reach the Por’s which is how many QB’s and WR’s and DB’s really struggle to the NFL Level…

I do beleive, as a laymen, and for as long as I have been watching Football, that I can tell when a Player who has those natural instincts and strong fundamentals in footwork, hand movement if on the line of scrimmage, good hip movement, good balancem tackling, making plays on a ball in the air, having good field vision as a RB or a Safety, who has a solid Football IQ and received good Coaching..
I don’t believe you have to be a “Scout” to recognize these things..

You still have yet to display any “scouting” or “evaluating” skills. All you do is post “yawn” or “bc I said so” or “I’m the head bitch in charge” and look up names to post.
Here’s a helpful hint……just list EVERYONE draft eligible but don’t say if you think they will be a bust or not. Then next year you can say “see I told you he’d be a stud/bust”
Impress the GCobb community and give us YOUR evaluation on 1 single player. Make it Clowney…..evaluate and own it! Now is your chance to show the world your skills or lack of.

See I LOVE money so I will do whatever it takes to make MORE money. BTW….IF what you say is true that you just had that shack built and you have no mortgage, you clearly are not very financially savvy.
But thats enough about how great my life is and how big your fantasy world is. This is a football site and thats what I am going to enjoy. So lets call a truce…..you don’t address me and I won’t point out every time you lie. You mention me and I’ll continue to point out your lies.
Get back to work as there is roughly 1000 guys eligible for the draft, thats alot of scouting.

You’re a liar, and you keep contradicting yourself.

I doesn’t matter, because that is what I live in, and if you visited the model – It is a 5 bedroom 41/2 bath, which is standard.

LOL!! You are living in your own world, if you think anyone has tore me up in anyway E0S…..

I give less than a darn about your personal life. My point as always to you E0S, is that you will never have the eye for talent in the NFL, that I have……..I’ve proved it – something you have yet to do – outside your one-sided opinion that nobody agrees with except your alter egos – Wiggles, and_gmcliff…….

They don’t need to cut 13 players 3players are already traded so were down to 10 in the mock 1 of the players is a guard that would be put on IR due to him tearing his ACL two of the picks are wr’s so were down to 7 players now there is no depth at cb they would both make the team were down to 5 now and the the final 3 picks in the mock would be on the practice squad that leaves two Casey Matthews will be cut so that leaves one and they still need depth on the dline.

Gloomy – you may be ahead of the curve again like you were with Desean trade rumors. the local guy from NFL films, Greg Cosell was pumping up Donte Moncrief on the Eagles website. Paulman likes him too. I might have to consider switching out Jordon Matthews on my mock draft wish list for Donte Moncrief. Give me some pros and maybe a con on Moncrief?

gloomysmitty
gloomysmitty
April 23, 2014 11:12 am

From what I’ve seen of him he runs good routes and gets in and out them with ease uses his body well in the air. With his size/speed combo has the potential to be a #1 or a very good #2. Blocks well also only negative I’ve seen of him is focus that’s it or even heard of for that matter. Paulman might have alittle more on him.

Moncrief is more of a body catcher than a hands catcher. He needs to spend time on the jugs machine. Takes time to build up top level speed when accelerating. I like Cody Latimer a little more than Moncrief.

Overview

Highly recruited Mississippi prep who also played basketball and won a pair of long jump state championships. As a true freshman in 2011, started all 12 games at split end and recorded 31 receptions for 454 yards (14.6-yard average) and four touchdowns. Was the Rebels’ leading receiver in ’12 when he started 12-of-13 games (gave way to extra tight end against Texas) and snagged 66-979-10 (14.8). Started all 13 games in ’13 and posted 59-938-6 (15.9).
Analysis
Strengths
Terrific size. Smooth accelerator — jets off the line, eliminates cushion and has speed to stretch the field vertically. Good balance and body control. Can stem his pattern and leverage defenders. Drives off cornerbacks and creates separation. Knows where the sticks are. Outstanding leaping ability to elevate and pluck throws out of the air. Flashes playmaking ability. Able to sidestep the first tackler and pick up chunk yards after the catch. Gives effort as a blocker to engage and seal. Has experience going head-to-head with NFL-caliber cornerbacks. Will be a 21-year-old rookie and has upside. Tied for the longest broad jump (11-foot) among receivers at the combine.
Weaknesses
Needs to sharpen his route running. Inconsistent ball reactions, particularly in traffic — better running through or under passes. Does not always play to his size — gets outmuscled for “50-50” balls and is still coming into his own as a dependable go-up-and-get-it guy. Average hand strength. Tends to trap some throws against his body and occasionally drops catchable balls. Could be more physical. Average elusiveness and open-field electricity. Showed he could be contained — seven games of 60 yards or less as a junior.
Draft Projection
Rounds 1-2
Bottom Line
Big, physically gifted “X” receiver with deep speed, leaping potential and playmaking ability. Could emerge a No. 1 or No. 2 receiver in a vertical passing offense, and his best football is in front him. Solid combine showing and pro-day workout have ascended his draft standing.

Latimer is an intriguing Prospect with lots
Of upside..he’s more raw, not very polished or smooth yet
In his route running and has a thinner & taller build.
I am not so sure about his blocking and durability and will likely need a season or two of getting stronger to make an impact
But he has the tools, hands are still a little inconsistent
In my opinion..but he will be a good WR

i

After studying five games of Indiana WR Cody Latimer, ESPN’s Todd McShay declared him “the most underrated player in the draft.”
“He did not drop a pass in five games I studied,” stated McShay, who is all-in on Latimer’s pro prospects. Latimer stands just under 6-foot-3 and weighs 215, and McShay reported he was clocked as fast as 4.39 at IU’s Pro Day. There are whispers Latimer could sneak into the back end of the draft’s first round. Jets GM John Idzik and Chargers GM Tom Telesco attended his Pro Day.

I’ve liked WR Moncreif since last College Season, He’s big at 6-2 weighs a solid 221lbs, and makes plays.. He’s tough, likes to block, and will catch balls over the middle and in traffic and the red-zone and has that sneaky speed to make yards after the catch or burn a defense deep if you fall asleep on him..
Some of his Measurables

Ran a 4.40 in the 40 Time at Combine
39 & 1/2″ Vertical Leap which is huge in the Red-Zone
11″ Broad Jump and 13 Reps at 225lbs, which you would like to see a higher number there…
Career Stats in 37 Games while at Ole Miss
150 Receptions
2258 yards (15.0 Yrd Avg)
19 TD’s

A couple of things that stand out to me, is that he’s played for 3 Different QB’s while at Old Miss, neither of which, are NFL Caliber QB’s so he’s been patient, a Team Guy and not allow their issues at QB effect his game..
He’s been Ole Miss’s best weapon the last 2 Season so he’s seen a lot of Double Teams from Good Teams in the SEC (Alabama,LSU,Georgia, etc, etc) and has consistently produced and played , so he’s durable..
He runs routes very smoothly and is very quick in and out of breaks and can maintain his speed through-out the route tree..
He has a strong, lower body that allows him to run thru arm tackles and get YAC and then his hands and leaping ability are outstanding..
From all reports that I’ve read, he’s hard-working, reliable and a humble kid
He may lack a bit to straight-line elite speed, but when watching tape, he plays the game as a fast speed…
I like this Moncrief a lot and he reminds me a little like a young Mike Quick
or a current day Reggie Wayne, in the way that he goes about his business and performs consistently at a high level…

Eagles somehow needs to get 10-13 picks to add depth and to replace the following players who just aren’t any good.
1.jeff maehi- not good at all
2.roc Carmichael-should be a practice squad guy at best
3.damion square- he is to light to ever be a DT.
4.casey Matthews- he sucks
5. Damaris Johnson- to small not enough moves looks scared on punt/kickoffs
6.jake knott- once you do drugs your out
7.curtis marsh- a wasted 3rd pick
8.vinny curry- would love him if we played a 4-3 trade him for 2015 picks
9.james Casey- he played st for all that sad

All Teams wants Picks in this Draft… I see the Eagles getting 2 more Selectiosn to make it 8 for this Draft, by a combination of Trading Back and or Trading Guard Evan Mathis, who probably has the highest Value right now (A 3rd Rounder) where B Graham & B Brown will likely only return a 6th/7th Rd Picks

Vinnie,
Each Year both the Cowboys and Lions alternate playing a Divisional Foe
Last Year Lions/Packers, meaning the Cowboys play an AFC Team
Year Before Lions/AFC Team Texans while the Cowboys played Redskins and so on and so on

This 2014 Thanksgiving will have the Cowboys playing a Divisional opponent and since they played RGIII 2 Years ago, it will be between the Giants and Eagles…

Sorry Paul….they do not play a divisional team every 2nd year. Theymay switch NFC and AFC, but they do not play a divisional game evey 2nd year.

I just listed their last 7 opponents. The Skins were their only divisional opponent in the last 7 years…and that was with them coming off a 6-10 season.

Other than that it was Oakland 2x, Miami without a qb, an under .500 seahawks team, etc etc.

Last time the Eagles played Dallas on Thanksgiving was 1989.

There’s 10 Days in-between the Thanksgiving (11/27)
Game and Hosting the Seahawks Dec 7th..
A very good situation for Eagles, don’t you think?

Paulman called for 4 National Games (Including Turkey Day vs Cowboys)
And got 3 of their Opponents correct in the
Colts,49ers & Cowboys..
Looks to be a good Schedule..
Nice Finish with 3 NFC East Games to close out the Season
After Cowboys Thanksgiving game, they will have 10 day break before the Seahawks fly east to Philly which is almost like having 2 Bye’s ..

San Fran, then Eagles, then San Fran again but the Seahawks get 10 days before Eagle game which is sandwiched between two 49er games, I think

Great Call Biggy,
Maybe the Eagles will give out “Stuffed Lions” instead of Gloomy’s
“Draft Trade Charts”…

oh rats – you are right. Sorry Cliff I thought we were going to party. That is 5 games off 1:00pm at home. I’m not going to any of those non 1:00 pm games. Especially the Thanksgiving game or the night games. Hate the schedule as a ticket holder.

Ebron can’t block a lick so there probably isn’t that big a difference between the 2, Denver Bronco TE Thomas doesn’t block nor does Jimmy Graham. Dallas Clark and Shannon made a great living being catch first barely block Tight Ends.

any one else an Eagle ticket holder who hates night games also? 3 games and 2 divisional games ruined by TV 8:30 pm games. Who wants to drive home at midnight on the road with a bunch of drunks.

It definitely puts a hardship for those having to drive home and be somewhat functional at work the next day.. The Price of Success & Popularity, I guess
I prefer the late Afternoons myself,(4-430pm) in the comfort of my Home, with good Food & Drink in the “Man-Cave”

Word is that Joe Kruger is now weighing in at 290 after working with the Birds trainers. He left school after only 3 years to be in last years draft. With his added size (adding almost 30 pounds), I am hopeful that he will be someone to contribute to the DLine rotation. We lost Geathers to FA, and someone will need to step up and fill the spot. I look at Kruger as a new draft pick this year and hoping that we can get some production out of him. Lord knows we need to have a better defensive line and a better pass rush if we want to have any success this coming year.

I also heard that Kruger has signed a Deal with Vince McMahon and the WWF crowd if his Eagles Career doesn’t work out..
