Mock Draft 4-23-2014

marqleeThis draft reflects the current first round draft order with no hypothetical trades.

1. Houston Texans– DE-Jadeveon Clowney- The upside of Clowney versus the proposed number one quarterback equates to JJ Watt having a new friend on defense for the 2014 season and beyond.

2. St. Louis Rams– WR-Sammy Watkins-The obvious selection would be offensive tackle to keep the often injured Bradford upright. Even after selecting Tavon Austin in the first round last year, and Brian Cook in the 2nd round in 2012, Jeff Fisher loves the person as much as the player in Watkins.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars– LB-Khalil Mack-The best linebacker in the draft and the only other defensive player that most would say warrants a top 10 selection. Gus Bradley has himself a versatile playmaker for a rebuffed Jaguars defense.

4. Cleveland Browns– WR- Mike Evans-With Blake Bortles there for the taking, the Browns opt to add yet another playmaker for their quarterback to be. Evans is a physical specimen that will attract double teams, leaving Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron plenty of room to build on their tremendous 2013 campaigns.

5. Oakland Raiders– QB-Blake Bortles- The Raiders are not going to convince anyone that Schaub is the long term solution. Bortles will come into a situation where he is not pressured to start from day 1, yet the odds of seeing playing time at some point in 2014 are quite good with the turnover prone Schaub.

6. Atlanta Falcons- OT-Greg Robinson- The Falcons must protect Matt Ryan. Robinson has been compared to Orlando Pace with his size and athleticism.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-OT-Jake Mathews-The Buccaneers were waiting for Mike Evans to fall to them, but the Browns put a dent in that plan. Anthony Barr is an attractive option for Lovie Smith at this position, but he is old school, and knows that the game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. He elects to take one of the top three offensive tackles with his first selection as the new head coach of the Buccaneers.

8. Minnesota Vikings– LB-Anthony Barr- With Jared Allen no longer in the picture, the Vikings will look for Barr to provide the big plays and sack production. Now that Norv Turner is calling the offensive plays, the Vikings hope that he can help salvage some talent with former first round selection Christian Ponder. With the re-signing of Matt Cassell, the Vikings have options as their starter for 2014, and will look at round 2 for their future franchise quarterback.

9. Buffalo Bills– OT-Taylor Lewan- Tempted by the upside of tight-end Ebron, head coach Doug Marrone knows there are other talented tight-ends he can draft in rounds 2 and 3, but the athleticism in Lewan is quite special, and elects to take the big man out of Michigan.

10. Detroit Lions-WR-Brandin Cooks– The Lions need help at both the safety and cornerback position, so they will turn to day 2 and 3 to address those vacancies, electing to give another weapon to Mathew Stafford instead. The speed and playmaking of Brandin Cooks, after already adding Golden Tate in free agency, will make Calvin Johnson a very happy man with the decrease in triple coverage looks that come his way.

11. Tennessee Titans- S-Ha Ha Clinton Dix-Ray Horton is the new defensive coordinator, and the Titans are going to need a ball hawking leader on the field type guy to help operate his style of play.

12. New York Giants– TE-Eric Ebron- The Giants lost their big physical receiver with Nicks heading to Indy in free agency. Their current tight-end situation is in desperate need of a playmaker, and drafting the best tight-end in the draft would resolve several offensive question marks.

13. St. Louis Rams-DT-Aaron Donald- You can always get your offensive tackle in day 2 of the draft. Jeff Fisher knows that his division is all about defense first. He opted to give opposing defenses a matchup problem with selecting Sammy Watkins earlier in the round, and sees the upside of a guy like Donald on the defensive line as an option too good to pass up.

14. Chicago Bears– S-Calvin Pryor- With needs at the defensive line and secondary, the Bears elect to get the other “plug and start” safety in the draft. Pryor brings the hard hitting, sure tackling that the Bears look for in their players.

15. Pittsburgh Steelers –CB-Darqueze Dennard- The Steelers secondary has been suspect for some time now, and getting a physical player like Dennard will surely provide immediate help with the likes of Torry Smith, A.J. Green and Josh Gordon in the division.

16. Dallas Cowboys– CB- Justin Gilbert- – The Cowboys need help all around with their defense. Any quarterback who faced the Cowboys secondary last season had the potential for a career day. Gilbert will provide a major upgrade at the cornerback position, and playmaking to the return game.

17. Baltimore Ravens– LB-CJ Mosely- The Ravens could really use help with their front line, but Mosely is a pro ready linebacker and fits right into the Baltimore 3-4 defensive scheme.

18. New York Jets-WR- Odell Beckham- The Jets need another receiving threat opposite of Decker. Beckham fills that void and also provides instant help in the return game.

19. Miami Dolphins-OT-Zack Martin- Help is needed with the receiving core as well as the o-line. Thedrop off at the tackle position is far greater come the second round, then then depth at the wide-
receiver position.

20. Arizona Cardinals– DT-Timmy Jernigan- The Cardinals already have a terrific defense, and adding a guy like Jernigan will help slow down the run first offensive attacks that they see from their divisional rivals.

21. Green Bay Packers- DE-Dee Ford – AJ Hawk has seen his better but still underachieving days go by him. Peppers signed the three year deal, but may not play until the end of it. Ford can get after the quarterback, and will make that his primary focal point while his coverage skills are worked on.

22. Philadelphia Eagles-WR- Marqise Lee- An immediate starter who will provide another receiving option for Foles and the high-tempo offense. The Eagles bank that injuries and quarterback play were the reasons for his decline last season, and that Lee returns to the player he was during his sophomore campaign as the best receiver in college football.

23. Kansas City Chiefs– OG- Xavier Su’a-Filo- The Chiefs lost three of their starters from last season. Jamal Charles can make guys miss, but he needs holes to run through.

24 Cincinnati Bengals– CB-Bradley Roby- The Bengals can get pressure on the quarterback, but they lack talent in their secondary. Roby gets to stay in the state of Ohio and also the chance to start with a solid training camp and preseason.

25. San Diego Chargers– CB-Jason Verrett- The Chargers need a cornerback that can lay a hit, create aplay and man the slot. Verrett is the guy, a talented player who will drop in the draft due to his height.

26 Cleveland Browns- QB-Johnny Manziel- With all of the potential upside and play making ability of Johnny Football, there are also a ton of questions about his size and how his college heroics will translate at the NFL level. With the earlier first round selection of his former teammate, Manziel will have plenty of reliable targets to throw to during his rookie campaign.

27 New Orleans Saints- DE-Stephon Tuitt- Rob Ryan would find a plethora of ways to get the most out of a player like Tuitt.

28 Carolina Panthers– WR-Kelvin Benjamin- Huge throwing target for a big quarterback. Benjamin’s ability to out jump the defender will allow Cam to play back yard football with both his running capability and now with his throws.

29 New England Patriots– Ra’Shede Hageman- The type of work ethic and versatility that Hagerman brings to either a 4-3 or 3-4 defense is one that defensive coaches crave out of their players. There is no lack of motivation for Hagerman, just respect for the game and a dedication to being the best at his position.

30 San Francisco 49ers– CB-Kyle Fuller – The 49ers may opt to add pass rushing to their defense with the questions surrounding Aldon Smith. Cornerback is an area of greater need, and Fuller is a guy they can make an immediate impact.

31 Denver Broncos-LB- Ryan Shazier- The Broncos have added to their pass rush and secondary in the off-season, and need to improve on the inside linebackers. Offensive line could also be a target, but the Broncos are attempting to move some pieces around with the guys already on their roster.

32 Seattle Seahawks– OT- Joel Bitonio- The Seahawks are a run first team, and Lynch had some games last season where the holes were few and hard to find.

That’s way too much to move up 9 Spots in my opinion..
Eagles should be able to Draft Safety Deone Bucannon with their #54 Pick (2nd Rd) and save them from trading Future Valuable Draft PIcks away

Sorry Jeff I rather have great cb’s rather than a good safety and with this team needing so much they are better off trading back than up, they only have six picks and you want them to trade there best trade chip that they have for a safety is he gonna help them with pass rush or is gonna help the dline stop the run. You don’t need great safety’s to win you just need solid guys back with great cb’s and a great pass rush…

I like most of the cb’s that are projected to go in rds 1-2 but with that said I don’t feel there are any game changers in this draft at cb dennard is probably the best but he’s not that fast. What people fell to realize is that in today’s NFL you can’t be great on both sides of the ball and when the eagles signed chip Kelly they chose to great on offense and they want a very good special teams. But drafting Pryor won’t matter if we have no pass rush he will look just like the rest of our safety’s they need pass rush ASAP somehow someway they have to get it.

no matter what mock draft I read, even Jeff’s here today, the most consistent consensus pick is Miami taking OT Zack Martin.

I heard some tv guy ( I think Greg Cosell but not sure) say Taylor Lewan is a left tackle nothing else. Like DJ Fluker is a right tackle nothing else. To try to train them away from what they have been doing their whole College career won’t work.

I understand why everyone is Mocking Lee to the Eagles, the whole Pac 10 thing…..but Lee doesn’t fit the “big people beat up little people” thing and he isn’t very fast by NFL standards.
I will be disappointed if they select Lee at #22. Now if they trade back then possibly but I see Lee being another USC WR that fails to produce in the NFL.

I’d prefer Jordan Mathews a little later. He ran a little quicker @ the combine and he’s 6-3. I think he could last to mid second round. He’s a great kid and does a ton of charity work…it can’t hurt if your cousin is Jerry Rice…lol

A WR like LEE is a luxury that can be duplicated in rounds2 and maybe 3. Unless a stud defensive player like BARR was to fall, the smartest way to go would be a CB like FULLER. We don’t have anybody backing up our starters and Chip has to remember what happened last year when one of our CBs went down. Maybe the smartest move would be to trade back with SF at 30 – draft a CB (maybe even FULLER) and pick up an additional pick.

1st round draft picks should be on QB, OL, or DL ONLY.

Every other position is for later rounds.

I see that QB Bridgewater or Derek Carr were not selected in your 1st Round Mock which is kind of hard to believe..
I think your run on CB’s is a little heavy and early in the Draft and since there are a lot of depth at the CB Position, I believe the run on them starts later in the Draft…
A real lack of DL in this Draft may make a few DL get selected earlier than projected ..I can see DL like a Donald,Jernnigan,Hageman,Nix,Tuitt,Ealy maybe going earlier and before many of these CB’s since there are quality CB Prospects throughout the first few Rounds where there is not as many
Quality DL Prospects..

I would monitor Anthony Spencer and see where he is coming off the microfracture surgery. Could be a good situational pickup if his knee is ready sometime during the season.

Miles Austin as your 3-5th Wr wouldn’t be a bad pickup either.

Exactly. Anyone with common sense knows this team had to look at WR this draft REGARDLESS if Desean was here or not. Maclin is coming off of a knee. Avant gave little in terms of receiving. Johnson was a flat out bust. Jeff Maehl….is Jeff Maehl.

The slot position was a relative afterthought in this offense last year.

Nice job Jeff! I also want Pryor. I think there is a definite hole at receiver that could have been avoided, and there is plenty of talent obviously in the first round. Still, I think we have a Quarterback and HOPEFULLY a good system in place. WE just need some studs on defense and I think adding Calvin Pryor would be great. Then I think 2nd round, target a guy like Allen Robinson or Davante Adams.
3rd Round- I think Stanly Jean Baptiste could be a huge steal here. I think this guy will be a legit CB in this league.

This still leaves holes at DE/OLB G and another speedy WR. Might be able to fill those in later int he draft, undrafted FA, or FA.

I mentioned Manziel as a possibility for the birds if he falls significantly but if they dont, I see them drafting Jordan Lynch in later rounds.. Chip could hold 4-5 QBs by the start of training camp.. Jordan can play other positions as well on offense.. not a bad idea taking him in later rounds…

I like WR’s Davante Adams (2nd Rd) ,Dontae Moncrief, (2nd Rd)
Robert Herron (3rd Rd ) or Jarvis Landry (3rd or 4th Rd)
in this Role of the “Slot WR”.. The Eagles really haven’t had one in years that could make some plays and YAC in between the numbers and on the intermediate Routes …
I think the above Receivers could do very well, right out of the gate in Kelly’s/Eagles Scheme..

Good job on the McGill pick! Ive been high on him for some months now but GMCliff isn’t, he sees him more of a safety, I still like him at corner, he has the speed and quickness to stay with outside wrs. I also like his length 6’3 long arms big hands. If he can become more physical and get a bit stronger, he would be a steal.. Initially, they had him going anywhere from the 3rd-5th rounds but hes moved up into the 2nd now.. Teams are beginning to recognize..

I do see him as a better Safety JH, but I do like him, Just not as much as a CB –

I think many mainly look at his measurables exclusively and see him in the mold of a Richard Sherman type based on that. I just think that is a mistake to assume that.

Noone is assuming that Cliff.. if you look at McGill’s movement you can see that he can and will play exclusively as a corner not safety.. He proved this during his senior bowl week and had a very good senior bowl game..

Hes not a safety.. Since you mentioned Sherman, he was told too that he would be a better fit at safety and that he was too slow blah blah blah.. Its all bull… and if you check Sherman and Mcgills 40time and other attributes they are very similar, in no way am I putting them on the same level though…

Draft McGill and Baptiste and you have your two starting corners for the next 6-7 years…

If I am using a 2nd Rd Pick for Safety, then I want a Player whose played Safety full-time… I believe McGill has potential and has great physical tools, but at #54 and trying to move Players to another Position I am not so sure about .. maybe with a later 6th/7th Rounder Selection you can experiement but in the first 4/5 Rounds , I want to Draft Players who have demonstrated Talent,Ability,& Performance and the Positions that they have Played and that you want to Upgrade ..

Baptiste is another one who may not start day 1 but has the tools and potential to start the following year and be a very productive player for you.. Hes gonna need some coaching up though..

I like Desir too, as long as they are 6’0 or taller and have the movement and coverage ability to keep up with the big fast WRs on the outside…

Im telling you, it started last season, they brought in two corners over 6’0 Williams and Fletcher, they wanna emulate the Seahawks style of defense. Playing mostly man press coverage, with smart physical corners and safeties… Not a bad formula…

Were not talking about height, and measurables Smitty – Were talking about actual skill to play the position….

He’s been given the opportunity before, and he was burned constantly – That is not his position in the NFL….HE IS A SLOT CORNER.

Gloomy, I gotta agree with the other guys, Boykin needs to stay inside. I can see now, teams singling him up on an island all by himself playing pitch and catch all game long. Hes too small.. He has the movement, speed, quickness, heart and clutch factor but just too damn small unfortunately…

He would have been a 1st round pick if he was 6’0 or taller… Kid can ball out. He may lead the league in ints this year as a slot corner… But don’t move him, then they’ll have to fill his spot and currently no one on the roster other than Boykin can play the slot.. Keep him where hes excelling..

Thank you JH,…..Boykins is a good player, good athlete as well ,but he has limitations. Don’t be fooled by the interceptions – him playing the slot may be more scheme, than ability..

Ok I don’t see how you can have your best playmaker on the bench and Boykin has said time and time again that he wants to start so when his contract comes around and he isn’t starting he is gonna leave.

If he does, he will be exposed for stealing money because he isn’t a starter.

Good one Gloomy but I don’t like Telvin Smith at #86..
He’s way to small at 218lbs to play LB at the NFL Level and I would rather Draft a Safety who is a True Safety and has good experience playing at the College Level with a 3rd Round Pick.. Telvin Smith is Athletic as hell, and could end up being a Safety in this league doen the road… but Telvin Smith reminds me of former Eagle LB Clayton who was athletic but had no postion to Play…

He fits perfectly JH between Cox, and Thornton – or perhaps as a replacement for Cox, if he doesn’t pick it up……

Dude the Eagles better be on the phones right now trying to get this deal done. He would complete the Dline and cause havoc up and down the line. Less pressure on the corners/safeties heck even the LBs immediately.. He’d be the most dominant DLman since Reggie White to play in philly day 1..

May not happen bc ive heard reports that the Birds are really high on Bennie Logan but hey that was weeks ago way before this news has come out..

Noway Logan will come close to being a Suh..

Any sane fan is able to see that…….You do that deal if the price reasonably allows us to move down etc….

Benny Logan is an average rotational player….

They can get attoachu and Lawrence & McCullers if they trade out the first and pick up more 2nd rd picks but it’s no way they also get Mack.

I mentioned this about a week ago once it was reported that Suh and his Agent/Mangement Team were disappointed by the Lions slow action about talking about an extension, so Suh skipped their Voluntary initial work-outs last week.. Remember there is a New Coach in Jim Caldwell who is old school and is not going to like trying to start a new Chpater in Lions Football with Locker Room issues or Unhappy Players on his Roster..
I’ve believe the Lions have been in Talks with the Jags,Browns and Falcons about a Trade involing their Early 1st Round Picks..
