Notes From The Phillies’ 3-2 Win Over Los Angeles

papelbonfiveThe Philadelphia Phillies won their third straight game on Tuesday night, taking down the Dodgers 3-2. Their record improves to 10-10.

  • A.J. Burnett turned in another solid start, pitching through 6.2 innings and allowing two runs. Burnett gave up six hits and one walk while striking out five.
  • Burnett also got the team’s two run rally in the fifth inning started with a lead-off single.
  • Burnett would score two batters later, after Marlon Byrd hit his fourth double of the year.
  • Ryan Howard continued his productive play with a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Ben Revere.
  • Domonic Brown drove in the winning run with a double in the 10th inning.
  • Carlos Ruiz hit his first triple of the year in the fourth inning. Ruiz was thrown out at home a batter later, however.
  • Ruiz would come around to score the winning run after reaching on a fielding error by Carl Crawford.
  • Ben Revere went 4-5 with four singles.
  • Jimmy Rollins went 0-5 and left seven men on base.
  • Jayson Nix started at third, and went 0-4, leaving five men on.
  • The Phillies went just 2-14 with runners in scoring position.
  • Jake Diekman got the final out in the seventh inning. Diekman was summoned because of his favorable matchup against lefty Carl Crawford.
  • Mike Adams pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
  • Antonio Bastardo struck out two to send the game to extra innings. Bastardo earned his third win of the year.
  • Jonathan Papelbon picked up his sixth save of the season.

Final Thoughts

Jonathan Papelbon isn’t exactly the most popular guy in town, but ever since blowing his first save opportunity of the year, he’s been rock solid.

Papelbon has now converted six straight save opportunities, and has given up no runs and only three hits in his last seven appearances. He may be a jerk, a fool, and a loudmouth, but give the guy some credit. He’s been doing his job as of late, and he’s been converting a lot of difficult, one-run saves.

The Phillies are on a bit of a roll right now, and they’ll get Cole Hamels back for tonight’s game. With A.J. Burnett and Cliff Lee pitching at a high level, the addition of Hamels could really make this rotation a serious strength for this club.

when Burnett rounded the bases to score his fellow pitchers were laughing at Burnett in good fun. So were the annoucers. A.J. didn’t get the win but he earned it.
Let’s go Hamels!
