Notes From The Phillies’ 5-3 Loss To St. Louis

Philadelphia Phillies v Milwaukee BrewersThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their second straight game on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals 5-3. Their record drops to 34-40.

  • Kyle Kendrick pitched six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk.
  • Kendrick had one bad inning, allowing four runs to score in the fourth, but allowed just one run to come around in his other five innings combined.
  • The Phillies’ offense was almost nowhere to be found for the second straight game.
  • Cody Asche was able to come through with a three-run double in the second inning, but that was it for the day. The offense managed just two hits after Asche’s double.
  • Ben Revere returned to the starting lineup, and went 0-4.
  • Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley each went 0-4, making the top three hitters in the lineup a combined 0-12.
  • Ryan Howard went 2-3 with a walk.
  • John Mayberry and Domonic Brown each went 0-3.
  • Recently called-up Cameron Rupp started at catcher to give Carlos Ruiz a day off. Rupp went 0-3 with two strikeouts.
  • Mario Hollands gave up two hits and recorded two outs in the seventh.
  • Justin De Fratus came on and got the final out of the seventh.
  • Ken Giles struck out two and walked one during a scoreless eighth.

Final Thoughts

Pathetic offense broke up the Phillies’ winning streak over the weekend and has now cost them two straight.

Take away Cody Asche’s big hit today, and the Phils would have likely been shutout today and scored just one run in the last two days.

We all know very well how this offense can just shut down for weeks at a time, and truthfully it doesn’t matter how good your starting pitching is or how well your bullpen is performing if you’ve got an aging core and an outfield stocked with nothing but mediocrity, then your team is going to be exactly what this group is right now: a sub-.500 team that isn’t a serious contender for anything.
