Thoughts On The Sixers’ Draft

embiidSixers fans, are you ready for another year of tanking?

The 2014 NBA Draft has come and gone. With rumors running heavy about the Sixers possibly trading up to get Andrew Wiggins, or standing pat and selecting Dante Exum while working out a deal for another lottery pick by trading away Michael Carter-Williams, this draft was an event that fans had been excited about for weeks.

Negotiations for the top pick failed to come through. And once the Sixers went on the clock with third overall pick, they used their top pick on Kansas center Joel Embiid. Seven picks later, the team used the tenth pick on point guard Elfrid Payton, and then flipped him to the Orlando Magic for power forward Dario Saric and a 2017 first-round pick.

Embiid, as we all know, will be out at least 4-6 months after undergoing surgery on a fracture in his foot, and Saric will spend the next two years refining his game over in Turkey.

The Embiid pick could very well be the defining moment of Hinkie’s tenure as general manager.

If Embiid’s injuries are a fluke, then Hinkie may have made the best selection in this draft. If Embiid’s prime has shelf life of less than five years, this is a pick that will have set the Sixers back a couple of years.

With Embiid, we know the potential is there for him to be a game-changing franchise player. But the shadows of Greg Oden, Andrew Bynum, and other infamously injured seven footers are looming large over a guy with two significant injuries in the last year alone.

Embiid’s health issues just kill any real enthusiasm and excitement that I might have had for him.

Its amazing to me that this team had two picks in the top 10, and yet once the season begins in November they will have nothing to show for it on the court. I’ve been completely on board with Sam Hinkie and the long-term plans that he has for this franchise. But I have to say, this is a pretty tough sell even for me.

However, whenever a team makes significant moves like this, I try not to get caught up in the short-term and focus on the big picture. Even though its disappointing that the only new talents we’ll get to see this year are that of Nerlens Noel and a couple of second-round picks, the Sixers are setting themselves up to be stronger in a couple of years.

They’ll be tanking at least one, possibly two more seasons and will continue to build through top lottery picks. In the meantime, the team will work to get Embiid healthy. They’ll continue to develop Michael Carter-Williams and Noel. They’ll look for diamonds in the rough in the second round. They’ll get a pretty talented power forward on their roster once Saric returns from Turkey.

Its going to be rough for a little while longer as the team continues to build and plan for the future. And I know its hard for even the most patient of fans to endure. But I still trust the vision of Sam Hinkie. I understand that this is a multi-year project, and that the organization is committed to building something worthwhile.

Sixer fans it doesn’t matter. You have to have stud players not good role players.

Number of Championships won without a HOF teammate
Jordan-0
Bird-0
Lebron-0
Duncan-0
Kobe-0
Magic-0
Dr J-0

That’s why the Randalls, Dougy McBucketts of the world don’t matter. The league is full of them type of players.lol You cant win shit with players like that. That’s why Embid had to be taken. You need superstar HOF players.

I see your point, but Kobe did win 2 without HoF teammates unless you think that Bynum, Gasol or Derek Fisher are HoF bound.

And I don’t think that Ginoboli or Parker are going to the HoF, so Duncan won one this year without it.

daggolden you were on the right track but its not about 2 HOF teammates as it is about having legit big men and more than one. To beat Lebron James Durant kobe whoever you have to control the paint. Wiggins and Parker will not dethrone LBJ or Durant in the next 3-5 years at their own game. Every champion has had control of the painted area. Dunacn and Shaq won almost every chip for 10 years. When Kobe won without Shaq he had Bynum and Gasol When he lost to the Celtics no Bynum, Celtics lost game 7 to the Lakers Bc no Perkins as crazy as that sounds. Pistons Ben Wallace, Rasheed, Cambell, Okur. MJ had 3 legit 7 footers and Rodman the 2nd 3 peat, the first run Bill Cartwright solidified the middle people forget how good he was.

When the sixers went to the Championship in 2001 as much as it was about Iverson they had Mutumbo, Big Mac, T Hill, and Matty G’s. you need multiple big bodies to control the paint. Mavs won when they got Tyson Chandler that is how you stop these wing superstars

I tend to agree with daggolden; the NBA is a league ruled by star players. That being said, I would have preferred Dougy McBucketts over Dario Saric with that 10th pick.
All indications point to this team tanking again next year; I’m not sure I can live through another season like that. It’s only going to disenchant the fans, the young players, and the coach if we’re awful again.

The NBA has become so bad that you cant get out of the 1st round with good players(Teams like Portland), you cant win with great players(OKC and Houston), to be in the discussion you may get lucky with 2 (HOF) players like the Miami Heat. Soon that wont be enough you will need 3 HOF players on a team to win a championship. See…….. San Antonio.

I don’t love Chris Paul but hard to say the best PG in the league who averages about 6 assists per game whereas Paul has an average of about 10/game. Not to mention points and rebounds.

As for Ginobli, his stats and role are pretty close to what Jeff Hornacek did in the league. I don’t think he is a HoF player either.

Guess the thought is that these guys get the nod because of the championships though.

I like that the Sixers picked Russ Smith. I know he is small, but he is lightning quick and I like his attitude a lot. He can come in and run the team when MCW needs a break. Like McDaniels at the top of round 2 also.

I like McDaniels from Clemson Upside, High Energy Guy, can Shoot a little, Rebound & Run the Floor and has a real good chance of making the Team .. I am not crazy about PF J Grant from Syracuse who should have stayed in school and needs to bulk up and develop a shot for he’s a leaper, and banger and rebounder but is very ineffective once more than 8 feet away from basket and won’t get the low position that he was used to in the College Game.. I see him as D League Player for 1-2 Years

They should of face Cleveland that extra second they wanted n took Wiggins, you would of had him, Noel n MCW to watch grow starting THIS year, a couple quality free agents also n we would of been on our way, all this over thinking and putting things in order for 2016 is ridiculous, Wiggins would of been more then enough if he was the only guy we took last night.

Wonder if the 76ers will talk to any big-name Free-Agent Scorers, Probably not, be wouldn’t a line-up of SF Melo work well with a lineup of MCW, Wroten, Thadd, Embiid & Noel to be a Competitive Team in the East..
Of course, this doesn’t appear too realistic or fit GM’s Hinkle way of operating but could there be a big-time Scorer out there in Free-Agency he’s Targeting

Watch for 76ers to Pursue Josh McRoberts who opted out of his Deal with Charlotte last week and had a nice Season as Point Forward, has a nice Outside SHot, passes real well for a big guy and is ahigh-energy type that Hinkle Likes .
Charlotte Drafted Noah Vonleh to go along with their Front Court of Al Jefferson, T Zeller so they probably don’t need to resign McRoberts
Charlotte also added PJ Hairston for Scoring out on the Wing

McRoberts would be a nice fit with Thadd, Noel,Embiid and can play a
#2, #3 or even a #4 for a few minutes here and there and could be had on the cheap for a 2-3 Year Deal until Saric and others are in Place

No sizzle from this draft, but a lot of steak. Think long term, we have several young guys that need to marinate for a few years before they can seriously compete at the top level. You don’t will championships with hamburger, keep going after steak and we at least will have a chance.

With the 3 and 10 picks they got the #1 rated player in Embiid when healthy, a top PF that can pass and score at 12, their 2015 first round pick back from ORL and ORL 2015 second round pick.
The Sixers board may have been 1-Wiggins 2-Embiid, but both are franchise players that are studs and the 2 top players from the last 3 drafts.

Rueben Amaro wouldn’t have screwed the draft up as bas as Hinkie did. Not 1 single player the 76ers drafted last night will be on the team in 4 years, and maybe 1 or 2 will even be in the league as a 10th man at that time. Next years record 10-72 at best!
Hope they plan on lowering tix prices down to about $5 court side.

I disagree. I do not know what other player the Sixers would havved picked at the 3 spot seeing that both Wiggins and Parker were picked. Exum is probably overrated because he refused to play against top talent, Gordon only plays D, randle has short arms, smart can’t shoot a jumper. Vonleh is probably the only other guy you take at 3 if you are the Sixers. The only issue here is patience. Wait and see.

What a great great draft strategy by Mr. Hinkie and my Philadelphia 76ers

I really like the Embiid pick. We all for the most part wanted Wiggins but having twin towers at both the PF and Center positions, both guys being interchangeable, spells trouble for the league in years to come

Embiid will heal from this fluke injury. in 5-8 months. He assured us that he will play this upcoming season but of course the Sixers will handle the situation appropriately

This wont be the same case as was with Bynum. Embiid is a young guy 18 19 years old, heals fast, no previous injury history minus the back in college but that’s fully healed

Many people in the know feel hes the prospect with the highest ceiling in this draft and that we have a goldmine

Both Parker and Wiggins said they feel Embiid has all time great potential.

We will eventually have one of if not the best center in the league after Coach Brown and his coaching/developmental staff gets to him

The Sixers have a lot of Cap space for possible deadline trades to acquire premier talent with contracts or expiring ones etc, Thad is also a good piece to have for trade

Like Ive told you guys before, Hakeem the Dream Olajuwon comparisons are not far fetched

“He is my idol (Embiid speaking of Hakeem). I will work to be as good and then try to be better” says Embiid after he was drafted

Lets hope we have an Olajuwon clone or close to it

But were beginning to see the vision that Hinkie has for this team, build inside out and build for longterm sustained success. This team is in a better position then it was when Hinkie first got it

He cant work miracles in one year, this is a process, together we are building.

There are going to be some premier players in this year and next years free agency that we possibly will sign (next year for sure)

Everyone needs to realize that this team is building and its gonna take time. They’re looking to build for the long haul thru the draft not thru free agency

They want to build, groom, nurture from within not try and buy a championship thru free agency, that doesn’t last long

Lets show our support for what Sam Hinkie is trying to do, he wants a championship maybe more than we do

#InHinkieWeTrust

#TogetherWeBuild

#ShowYaLuvPhilly!!!

I really think Vonleh was their guy if he fell to 10….

They had to take what the draft board gave them…that’s the way I see it…

There really is no SG/Slasher/ Shooter in next years draft either, outside Hozonia from overseas, but he’s like Stauskis – He can’t guard NBA caliber SG’s so he’s not a starter….they will have to draft one in 2016, or hope to go after Durant in 2016……

Jon Hart

This is whats wrong with Philly fans..

They’re impatient and put too much pressure on the teams and players and wonder why we don’t win a damn thing other than a 08′ world series run then zilch

Complain, whine, cry, bitch and moan like little preschoolers

All the pressure us fans have put on the teams has gotten us where and with what?

Not a damn thing

Sixers haven’t won a championship since the 80s and now we have a GM that is honestly making moves to cause this team to have sustained success but guys are ignorant to that point

They want a few 30 or 30+ year old superstars to come here instead who will most likely retire in 4 years

I like Lebron and Wade etc but theyre run may be for another 3 years so its very short lived

But when you start drafting premier talent each year and stack and stack and keep stacking talent, mixed in with a great coaching staff and great developmental system and having a new training facility which is a bonus, your putting yourself is a position similar to what the Spurs have done by sustaining success, and stashing foreign talent and developing within.

The Sixers may not be a very good team next year but they will have flexibility especially cap wise.

I’m extremely pumped about this team and its direction. We just need to support this team some more.

Way too much negativity each and every year from fans

Sixers won’t draft a starting caliber PF for they have Noel and Embiid, two guys that will most likely be here for the next 10-12 + years if they remain healthy

But having the twin towers 2.0 won’t stop the Sixers from adding talent to the team.

We really can’t go Big man JH, unless he is a SF/PF. We have to get an impact guard to play with MCW. Mundiay, is a better PG, than SG at this point but he should be our pick.

2016 Draft : The next talent laden draft – The 76ers have 2 #1’s
1. Thon Maker 7-3 C – Think Bill Russell w/ a game like Vin Baker
2. Ben Simmons 6-10 PF – Think Karl Malone w/ a smoother game
3. Ivan Rabb 6-9 PF – Think thicker Kevin Garnett w/ a jump shot
4. Karon Iverson 6-8 SF – Think Sean Elliott
5. Justin Jackson 6-7 SF – Think smaller LeBron James
7. Carlton Bragg 6-9 PF – Think Chris Webber with a handle, and J

Good stuff Cliff, out with your 2015 early draft prospect list, #respect

I agree we need an impact guard big time! But may not be able to pass up

Thon Maker is a rare breed, he plays like a SG at 7-3, he could be a Bill Russell clone

Ben Simmons reminds me more of Blake Griffin than Karl Malone

Rabb has a good game, very athletic but we don’t need a PF

Kuran Iverson (A.I’s cousin) has a smooth game much more athletic than Sean Elliott was, he has star power like his cousin A.I

Justin Jackson is a beast and as he grows will get better and better, models his game after Magic Johnson and can pass his butt off but wants to have scoring ability like Lebron and is looking to do that more, scary combination, freaky potential

Carlton Bragg went crazy at the NBA Top 100 Camp 36pts 14rebs, hes a good player and definitely see the Chris Webber comparisons

And the Sixers will get 2 of these prospects or they could trade both picks for Star players (Russell Westbrook quickly comes to mind, who would fit this team very well)

Sixers did a great job and did what they had to do. We get nothing in 2014-15 (and we will like it). But that is the way today’s NBA is with the guaranteed contracts and salary cap. You have to sacrifice wins and attendance now for the future. Nothing is worse than being the 8th seed every year. They are in the collecting asset mode. 1 more year of collecting assets, then you can start to use them to build your roster.
