On Paper: Breaking Down Eagles-Colts

NickFoles4Quarterback

No one is sure what to make of Nick Foles right now. An absolutely brutal first half against the Jaguars shook the confidence of even the staunchest Foles’ fans. There were some brutal turnovers, and plenty of indecisiveness as Foles held on to the ball far too long. But a resurgent second half played a significant role in helping the Eagles come from behind for a win. I believe that Foles is going to be just fine, and I expect him to bounce back with a much better all-around performance in Week 2.

Andrew Luck makes the Colts relevant. His talent covers for a lot of deficiencies on this team, and he’s proven several times that he’s capable of guiding his team back from some significant holes. If there’s a hole in his game however, its that he can be a little susceptible to turnovers. He threw two against Denver last week, and also threw a number of picks in both of his playoff games last year against the Chiefs and Patriots.

Both quarterbacks are coming off of similar games. They each began their respective Week 1 outings very poorly, but both bounced back to bring their teams back with better efforts in the second half. Although Luck’s effort didn’t result in a win, his rally was against a Super Bowl contending team rather than a bottom-feeder like Jacksonville. I think Luck is going to be much more determined to come out and put on a great show in front of his home crowd to avoid going 0-2.

Advantage: Colts

Running Backs

LeSean McCoy’s impact was limited by the Jacksonville defense last week, but even in a subpar outing, McCoy still put together 115 yards from scrimmage. Darren Sproles also comes off of a great game in which he was the guy who really sparked the Eagles’ rally with a long touchdown run on a fourth down and a couple of nice punt returns.

The Colts have no running game to speak of. Trent Richardson, who they traded a first-round pick a year ago to acquire, has been a complete disaster to this point. Veteran Ahmad Bradshaw is the most effective runner that Indianapolis has right now, but he’s no difference-maker.

Advantage: Eagles

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

Jeremy Maclin’s 68-yard touchdown reception broke the 17-17 tie with Jacksonville last week, and we can expect the veteran’s chemistry to improve with Foles as the weeks go on. Riley Cooper was quiet last week, and the Eagles need to find a way to get him going. Zach Ertz began what many expect to be a breakout season with a couple of long receptions, including a big touchdown reception in the third quarter against the Jags. Jordan Matthews did a nice job getting open last week, and if Foles hadn’t misfired on several passes, he might have had a few more receptions.

The Colts receivers are good. but not great. Reggie Wayne has recovered nicely from his season-ending injury of a year ago, and is as reliable as they come. T.Y. Hilton is an explosive deep threat that has a very good rapport with Luck. Former New York Giant Hakeem Nicks is the team’s third receiver, and is still working his way into a role on this offense. Tight ends Dwayne Allen and Colby Fleener are a couple of talented young weapons that shouldn’t be discounted.

The Colts receivers have a good mix of experience and talent. If the Eagles’ secondary had a hard time with undrafted rookie Allen Hurns, I think they’re going to have much more trouble with this group.

Advantage: Colts

Offensive Line

The Eagles’ offensive line is a patchwork one at the moment, playing without Pro Bowler Evan Mathis, top reserve Allen Barbre, and suspended Lane Johnson. David Molk and Andrew Gardner did a good job picking up the slack once called upon a week ago, but its going to be very challenging for the offensive line to be in sync with only a week of practice together. They’ll now enter what will be a very loud dome, and I expect this group to produce their fare share of penalties. Dennis Kelly will see his first action of the year, and is expected to step in at left guard.

The Colts’ oline is a little banged up too. Center Khaled Holmes is battling an ankle injury, and may not be available for this game, meaning that one-time Eagles’ practice squad member A.Q. Shipley could get the start. Any time a team is down its starting center, there’s a good chance it could impact the entire offense. They’ve had their struggles as a group in the preseason, and even at their peak health this isn’t a great group.

Even though the Eagles are missing some key pieces, they’ve still got Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, and Todd Herremans, all of which are significantly better than anyone that Colts have.

Advantage: Eagles

Defensive Line

Fletcher Cox was among the team leaders last week with six tackles, and also returned a fumble for a touchdown. Vinny Curry recorded several good quarterback hurries, while Bennie Logan and Cedric Thornton did a good job supporting the run defense. They should have no trouble bottling up the invisible Colts running game, and might even be able to provide some pass rushing support against an average offensive line.

The Colts have a very large defensive line, with Cory Redding, Josh Chapman, and Arthur Jones. The size of these lineman are going to challenge the Eagles’ run blocking skills. Much like the Eagles’ defensive line, these guys struggle to generate a pass rush. None of them have ever had more than 4.5 sacks in a season, and Chapman is still looking for his first career sack after playing in the league for two seasons.

Advantage: Eagles

Linebackers

The Eagles’ linebackers were very active last week. Connor Barwin was rock solid, batting down several passes to help kill drives on third down. Trent Cole recorded a sack and a forced fumble. Mychal Kendricks was tied for the team lead with six tackles, and also recorded a sack.

The Colts are looking to Bjoern Werner for a breakout season. They spent a first-round pick on him a year ago, and have gotten very poor returns on their investment so far. He had just 3.5 sacks last season, and didn’t record any in Week 1. Erik Walden has been a starter on this team for three years, but has never recorded more than 60 tackles or three sacks in any of those years. Jerrell Freeman and veteran D’Qwell Jackson are the leaders of this group, and Freeman is expected to miss the game.

Indianapolis doesn’t have a true star at this position without Robert Mathis, and their guys look even more average on paper than what the Eagles have.

Advantage: Eagles

Secondary

The Eagles struggled to contain rookie Allen Hurns last week. Cary Williams was beat for two touchdowns in the first half, but this group did do a much better job at tightening up their coverages in the second half. Nate Allen also recorded a sack on a safety blitz. Malcolm Jenkins quietly had a nice debut with the Eagles last week.

The Colts’ secondary is also pretty average. Vontae Davis is their most dependable corner, and possibly the only guy here that would start for a good team. LaRon Landry has a long history of struggling against the Eagles, going back to his days with Washington. Greg Toler and veteran Mike Adams are starting simply because the Colts have no one better, and failed to find a more suitable replacement for Antoine Bethea over the off-season.

Advantage: Even

Special Teams

Cody Parkey drilled a long field goal to tie the game against he Jaguars in the second half, and also recorded five touchbacks. Donnie Jones had five punts downed inside the opposing 20 yard line. Darren Sproles made significant contributions in the return game.

Adam Vinateri is about as solid and dependable as they come. He’s kicked in plenty of big games throughout career. Pat McAfee is also a solid punter that has been kicking with the Colts for years. Dan Herron is the team’s primary return man, and is still trying to establish himself.

Advantage: Eagles

Intangibles

The Colts can’t afford to start the season 0-2, plain and simple.

This is a much more important game for them, playing their home opener is almost a must-win situation then it is for the Eagles who avoided an 0-1 start with their rally against Jacksonville last week.

Now, this should still be a very winnable game for the Eagles. The Colts’ defense is not a strong unit by any means, and the opportunity to put up points will be there, but its all going to come down to how well the new-look offensive line is able to perform in a hostile environment, along with the decision making of Nick Foles.

The emotional edge that the Colts should have in this one has been what has stood out more than anything to me, and its why I expect the Eagles to lose this week.

Pick: Colts 31, Eagles 27

Keys to the Game
1) Foles has to play a Clean Game
2) Take advantage of TE’s verses Colts LB/Safeties
3) Don’t give up the Deep Ball to TY Hilton,
(When Colts go to 3 WR Sets, Players which they do quite often,
Maybe put Boykin on him 1 on 1
4) Take advantage of the Colts shaky Special Teams Coverage Units
5) Watch Colts RB A Bradshaw out of the backfield on Screens and wheelhouse routes..

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. Desean has an astounding 81 yards through two games. He opened up the field so much against Houston that the Skins were able to rack up 6 total points through the entire game.

Couldn’t agree more paulman.

I’m not saying this game will be a walk in the park for the Eagles but I see to many holes in the colts defense for then to beat us. I know some (eagles0) will come on here and say “This defense held Manning in check for a half.” I think it was more of the Broncos taking it easy on them then the Colts mounting a serious comeback. Foles was off last week. But this week will be different. As mentioned before I believe the Jaguars defense is more of a threat then the colts defense. We should slice up their defense.

Luck is AWESOME and he’s receiving core is stout. But I don’t think he will have a clean pocket to throw from. Even though he can throw on the run his moneymaker is inside the pocket. Boykin must shadow Hilton throughout the entire game. If they go on with 2 WR ser I think Bradley needs to cover Hilton with a little help from the safety. Williams should never cover him at all.

Holes in the Colts defense? what about the holes in our defense? against one of the best QB’s in the league. The Eagles still have not answered the question if they have a better pass rush than last season…and even if it is better doesn’t mean much. Jags defense is still terrible…Bradley still has a long way to go with that team. After watching that Jags team give up 40 points to a Skins team, not sure how anyone can believe their defense is good! they gave up 34 and 41 points in back to back weeks…
Colts defense is much better than the Jags….
Its going to be a good game…But the Eagles will be tested on both sides of the ball.

We will see tonight. I just don’t see the Colts D giving us a hard time. Yes Andrew Luck is a really good QB not ready to crown him as great though. Is he better then Foles? IMO yes he is. I just think our defense is capable producing a pass rush since they have no threat of a running game. All they have to do is pin their ears back and sack the QB. This isn’t the Eagles Defense of the post Jim Johnson era. They are tough and might do a pretty good tonight. We will see though. If I’m wrong I will be the first to admit it. Outside of Luck there is no that scares me on that team.

Again, you are forgetting the role emotion plays in a game.

Last week I told you the Eagles would come out flat as it was a “look ahead” game against the lowly Jags. They did exactly that.

This will be a game against an absolutely desperate Colts team. A team that is 13-3 at home over the past 2 seasons.

This isn’t a cake walk. Its a hornets nest. Eagles will have to survive both an early assault, and of course the patented Luck 4th quarters.

Can the Eagles win? Certainly. But the odds are they won’t.

I think we are making to much if this 0-2 start. The Eagles also want a comfortable lead in the division. We don’t know what to expect out of Dallas and Washington. The Eagles will go into Lucas Field with something to prove. I think their emotions will be high also. It setups for a great game

Defensively, they have Dqwell Jackson, Arthur Jones, Cory Redding Vontae Davis, Mike Adams,Eric Walden, LeRon Landry, Bjorn Woerner

A Good Punter in Pat McAfee, and a Solid Kicker in Adam Vinatieri

These Players are Paid Professional Football Players as well as their Coaching Staff who are starting to feel some heat from their medicated Owner Robert Irsay Jr.. The Pressure is on the Colts..

Dag he’s here for next year …that’s the eagles mo…they have Trent Coles spare tire ,I might agree ,a number 1 ,as a spare tire is a luxury ,not many can afford ..hoping they didn’t get it wrong ,is the bottom line..I’m stoked as there are many storylines ,how does our pass rush get to luck and flush him ,is one key to getting it done ..the offense for the birds have to sustain some drives ,in order to adequately give the defense rest …I see this as a very winnable game ,control both lines of scrimmage ,and create pressure by pounding the rock and outlets to tight ends and sproles ,in space,.27-24 ..2-0 start bring on the songs team..
