Thoughts From Eagles-Redskins

AP REDSKINS EAGLES FOOTBALL S FBN USA PAChaos At The Linc

Truly this is one of the wildest games that I can remember in recent memory.

Chaos is the only appropriate word to describe Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.

From a 102-yard kickoff return, to a second-half brawl, to two young quarterbacks engaging each other in an exciting duel, this game just had it all.

Here’s some things to think about from today’s win.

The Eagles won despite LeSean McCoy making no impact on the game with only 22 yards rushing.

They won despite losing two more starters on the offensive line, and finishing with a completely different line than what they began the game with.

This was a game that had so many twists and turns, with heroes on both sides and in all three phases of the game.

Every play counted. Every misstep was critical.

At the end of the day, once the dust settled, the Eagles stood victorious. They had made more plays, while Washington had made several back-breaking mistakes.

From Kai Forbath’s missed field goal, to Kirk Cousin’s interception, to their failure on the final drive, Washington brought one of their best efforts, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the Eagles.

Foles Plays His Best Of Season

Nick Foles was absolutely spectacular today. With no running game, and an offensive line that was allowing him to take shot after shot, Foles stood tall and delivered a very convincing performance, throwing for 325 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Foles saw the field very well today, and always seemed to know exactly where to go with the ball. For the first time this season, he really looked sure of himself from start to finish, and the Eagles needed him to be all of that today.

Most impressive was how Foles bounced back from a hit that briefly knocked him on the ground, and started a brawl that got several players (including Jason Peters) ejected. Foles was clearly in significant pain for the rest of the day, but battled through and helped the offense score their go-ahead points.

It was a statement game from the Eagles’ young quarterback. He’s for real. Make no mistake.

Defensive Struggles

The Eagles’ lack of a pass rush is just killing this team right now.

Kirk Cousins had all the time in the world to deliver his passes, and was rarely ever under duress. The Eagles clearly missed Mychal Kendricks today, but the team just couldn’t create any pressure to save their lives.

I thought the Eagles’ secondary actually played a pretty decent game. Yes, Kirk Cousins dropped over 400 yards and three touchdowns on them, but throughout the game, guys in the secondary made plays.

Bradley Fletcher broke up a number of passes. Brandon Boykin came up with a huge deflection on third down in the fourth quarter of the final drive. And last but not least, for the second straight week, Malcolm Jenkins had a game-changing interception, and it was a beautiful diving catch, one of the prettiest interceptions you’ll see.

The numbers might not be pretty, but when you consider how they got absolutely no support from the pass rush, I think the secondary actually did much better than a lot of people might think.

DeSean’s Return/Matthews Breaks Out

DeSean Jackson was fired up for this game, and made it clear early on that he harbors no love for his old team.

Jackson caused an early commotion by shoving Malcolm Jenkins after taking a hit in the first quarter.

Jackson was held quiet for much of the day until the end of the third quarter when he hauled in an 81-yard bomb from Kirk Cousins that tied the game at 27, and temporarily swung momentum into the Redskins’ favor.

Rookie receiver Jordan Matthews had his coming out party today, catching eight passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

Matthews looked much more settled than his first two games, and his two touchdown receptions were absolutely critical.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • The Eagles’ offensive line finished the game with an entirely different look than what they began with. After opening up the day with Jason Peters and Andrew Gardner at tackle, Todd Herremans and Dennis Kelly at guard, and Jason Kelce at center, the birds finished with Herremans at right tackle, Kelly shifting from left to right guard, David Molk at center, Wade Smith at left guard, and Andrew Gardner at left tackle. Remarkably, the seven offensive lineman did not allow a sack.
  • Credit that lack of sacks to Nick Foles, who had the presence of mind to get rid of the football effectively and to move around the pocket well. He took a pounding today as a result of the shambled offensive line.
  • The weakness of the line also took a toll on what LeSean McCoy was able to do. McCoy picked up just 22 yards, and was really held in check throughout the game.
  • Jeremy Maclin is having a tremendous season. He finished today with eight grabs for 154 yards and a touchdown, and also had another called back on a terrible illegal block in the back call against Jason Kelce.
  • Riley Cooper caught four passes for 34 yards today, including one that helped keep a drive alive that led to a touchdown.
  • We had a James Casey sighting today. The $4 million third-string tight end had himself a 19-yard reception.
  • Brent Celek was held without a catch for the second straight week. Celek’s drawing a lot of extra assignments as a blocker to help out the embattled offensive line.
  • Jeff Maehl came down with a 15-yard catch that helped keep a drive alive.
  • I still don’t understand why Brad Smith is on this team. With even Jeff Maehl getting reps ahead of him, I don’t see why he’s on this roster and active on gamedays.
  • On Chris Baker’s hit: it was a dirty play for sure, but I don’t have a problem with what he did. I’d want any of the Eagles’ defenders to do the same if they had an opportunity to knock out an opposing quarterback from the game. Recall that former Eagle great Hugh Douglas once applied the very same strategy in a 2001 playoff game against Jim Miller and the Bears. On an interception return, Douglas gave Miller the hardest shot he could, and knocked the Chicago quarterback out of the game.
  • Chip went 3-3 on challenges today, and got some big plays overturned, most notably the Foles-interception and the Maclin reception in the second half.
  • Jason Peters got himself ejected, but he did the right thing in standing up for his quarterback.

Defense

  • Good lord, why on Earth do the Eagles put Casey Matthews on to the field for any reason at all? The guy is just absolutely brutal, and the Redskins went after him several times today. We had to endure another round of Matthews stumbling around, missing tackles, and practically tripping over his own shoelaces. Once again, I’ve never seen a professional athlete that has looked more helpless, inept, and overwhelmed as this guy.
  • The only reason Matthews should ever see the field is to run out and retrieve the kicking tee after a kickoff.
  • The Eagles really need to find a way to get Brandon Boykin on the field more. He’s one of their top playmakers, and they can’t afford to have him on the bench.
  • I don’t think Vinny Curry has been getting nearly enough snaps. But at this point, that really shouldn’t surprise anyone. Sure enough, the Eagles can find plenty of ways to get an oaf like Matthews onto the field for more snaps than he deserves, but a guy who consistently makes plays against the pass like Curry plays very sparingly. Yep, sounds about right.
  • Very quiet game for Connor Barwin, who registered just one assist.
  • Run defense was also a major problem for the Eagles today. Alfred Morris gave the team trouble throughout the afternoon, and guys had a lot of trouble wrapping him up.
  • But seriously Howie, we really can’t find a better backup linebacker out there than Casey Matthews? After four freaking years?

Special Teams

  • The Eagles have tried a different kick returner every week. Nollan Carroll was the lead-off man in Week 1. Darren Sproles took care of business in Week 2. Chris Polk got his shot in Week 3. Polk took his first return 102 yards to tie the game at seven, and brought another kick out to the 40-yard line.
  • Many questioned whether or not Polk should have even made the team after missing the preseason, but he showed today that he can bring something significant to the table.
  • Cody Parkey had another tremendous week as the Eagles’ kicker. Parkey routinely hit the ball out of the endzone, and drilled all three of his field goal attempts, including a 51-yarder that proved to be the difference in the game. Parkey has now connected on important kicks in all three weeks of the season.
  • Donnie Jones had a weak punt in the fourth quarter that set up Washington with great field position for their final drive. Its not often that I have something negative to say about Jones, but he needed to do a better job in that situation.

Final Thoughts

The Eagles start 3-0 for the first team since 2004.

You can’t say enough about the character that this team has shown through three games, fighting back from three straight double-digit holes.

The difference between the state of this franchise under Chip Kelly and what it was under Andy Reid is just remarkable.

All throughout today’s game, I never felt like the game was in doubt. Whether the Eagles were down by 10, or trying to hold with a final defensive stand in the fourth, I was confident the whole way through that they were going to find a way to win.

I seldom rarely ever felt that way during the Reid era, especially from 2005 and on. With Reid, it was the complete opposite. You knew certain things were going to go wrong, it was just a matter of when. You knew the same mistakes would be made and painfully repeated.

With Kelly’s Eagles, its different. They’ve got a fun, exciting energy about them. They play hard for each other, and they’ve responded incredibly well to adversity.

These first three weeks have been about as exciting as any diehard Eagles fan can hope for.

I can’t wait for San Francisco.

Eagles started off 3-0 in 2011.

Great points though. The pass rush is the sole reason I’m not completely sold on this team being for real. I hope they can correct it because it’s only a matter of time before it catches up with them.

Sorry, they started 2-1 in 2012; and eventually 3-1 before the wheels came off.

Looks like trouble is brewing

Speaking to reporters, cornerback Cary Williams questioned head coach Chip Kelly and his practice methods, saying they are having a negative impact on the team.

“I’m saying [practicing every day] impacted a lot of people,” Williams said. “A lot of people, but I’m just the only one man enough to get up here and say anything about it, talk to ya’ll as a man and discuss and issue that, obviously, in my opinion, is an issue in our starts [to games].”

Didn’t the Eagles do exactly the same thing last year and they were amazingly injury free? He may have a point or he may just be lazy and trying to hide his poor play.

They could have scored more, Foles have about 4-5 balls sail on him to receivers that were pretty much wide open. One which would have def been a touchdown to Maclin another which would have been at least inside the 5 yard line possibly a touchdown. The one on the “interception” sailed very high. Other then that he def played his best game but it could have been 48-34 pretty easily with 2 better placed balls. Though we are 3-0, a little concerned with the oline being as depleted as it is now though. Onward to San Fran next week, should be another nail biter

Agree with much of what you said however Fletcher was getting torched by each and every receiver that lined up against him. Cousins was throwing his way on every play in the first half.Carroll may need to get the start over him next week. Did Smith make any plays on D when he was in? I did not see any. Last, you touched on Parkey but for this UDFA rookie to come in, win the job in the fourth preseason game and perform the way he has is truly one of the most important stories on this team. Henery in there and I think we lose the game.

Score 17-20 Pts a game unless they get a Defensive Score

Unsung Eagle Hero’s Today
TE Brett Celek who had to stay in & block most of the Game
TE James Casey who made a nice Catch to put the game away
CB Boykin who defended well on a couple of 3rd Down Pkays in the 2nd Half
OL Dennis Kelky played LG then switched to RG and battled
and helped keep DL Hatcher at bay for the most part
Players who disappointed
Safety Nate Allen had his worst game in 2 Years
OLB Trent Cole was nowhere today..
RB McCoy.. He took a hot to the head early and just seemed out of synch
All game, a few tines he had holes but hesitated and danced around a bit too much, also he a hit to the head again on 2nd to last series,
I expect that he will be out next week
Kelce will miss 2 weeks at least with abdominal strain
Kendrick’s probably out 1 more week,
(I don’t trust that loose turf field at new 49er Field
And need to be careful with him)

The game ball goes to Jason Peters who stuck up for Foles… Was it really a cheap shot…I don’t think so… It was thought to be an interception and Foles was drifting to position himself to make a tackle! If it was Cousins in that situation I would want our defensive player to take the shot! It’s football

I don’t disagree that it is a football play, but it is actually against the rules. A QB after an interception is specifically referenced as a defenseless player which is a personal foul and up to the ref’s discretion to toss the guy if they think that it was over the top. Also could be referenced as blindside block even if he wasn’t the qb.

Baker may not agree with it or know about it, but that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be penalized for it.

sproles and ertz take it easy this week and Maclin and Matthews explode with fantastic games —
Djax got his today–
I thought Maclin would easily replace Djax which is why I was so disappointed in him for not making something out of nothing. Wow – He was making big time catches today – He had suction cups on his finger tips snagging that football today. Maclin has outplayed DJax all 3 games, cha-ching ( sign him now for the longer you wait the more expensive it gets)

The Pass/Run Ratio for Eagles went pretty much as I thought and stated in pre-game comments.. the Redskins Front 7
(With 8 in the box) was designed to take the Eagles Running and Screen Game away, which it did, forcing Foles to beat them thru the air, which he did brilliantly,
Even Chip Kellly acknowledge this after the game…
You take away the Eagles RB’s , then Foles & the Receivers &
TE’s be one more of the Focus and especially how the game played out with McCoy dinged, OL getting reshuffled and being behind a good part
Of the Game… There weren’t a lot of check downs either since TE and Backs
Were needed to stay in and block many times
Fokes beat them with intermediate and targeted Deep Routes
Which was great to watch..

Surprised none of the Foles haters have said anything yet. Despite Foles’ stats in the first two games, I had my concerns but man did he show up in a major way against the Skins yesterday. He really showed his toughness, getting right back up after every single crushing hit.

Songs, or any of you other running QB lovers, please give us an update on how RG3, Cam Newton, and Kaepernick are doing this year and explain why they are still better QBs than Foles.

Fantastic. Not a mention in King’s MMQB today. Keep under the radar.

Still can’t believe how McCoy was let back into the game. He had his bell rung on that early play. There’s no way he didn’t/doesn’t have a concussion.

4 of 5 starters missing on the oline. Down to 3rd stringers in 2 positions. Unbelievable.

Going to be very very difficult in SF with that lineup. My Feeling is they should sit Kelce out regardless if he’s ready to go. Then in 2 weeks get him and Johnson back for some semblance of Normalcy.

Head in to SF, hand off the ball 45x to Polk and get outta there.

I do too IJ. That little show they did on the sidelines of hiding his helmet and the animated discussion, I have little doubt that they broke the concussion protocol. I wonder if the league or players union will look into it. Shady is a warrior and will want to play at all costs, the protocol was put in so as to protect players from themselves. I believe that the traners and doctors failed to do their job. I had too many concussions to even count (go ahead, make your comments about that explaining my posts) but back in the day it was a badge of honor to push through the hit and continue to play. With the effects of the older players and the evidence of longterm damage, these professionals need to protect the players from themselves. Shady should have been out of the game, and Kelly should have stepped in and made the move after seeing him on the field. He was far from his normal self, Kelly needs to get some blame also.

Kelly doesnt have time in game to do concussion protocols…thats the last of his worries as a head coach…if it was during the week yes…but during the game no way.

He was dealing real time with a mash unit of OL upfront….if his personnel let him down during the game in that regard than he should be getting answers now.

1 yard per rushing attempt? I know it was a patchwork line, but the man has 20 some carries and averages little over a yard per carry, doesn’t Kelly see that?

Sproles only got 2 carries the whole game. Yes, he fumbled after a nice run, but with Polk now healthy, Kelly had options. Shady continued to dance and go down, and worse Kelly continued to call his number on 1st and 2nd down and put the team in a 3rd and long situation. I think he blew it here, and that if he was not aware he needed not be more aware of the situation. Along with the health of your best player, you could have lost the game.

I think he skirted the concussion protocol…I also think he looked fine to me.

I think there were multiple runs that if he just hit the hole he would have had more positive yardage…however its hard to concede because what makes him special is his cutback ability. I think he was trying way to hard to bust something.

I also think the Skins secondary served that game on the platter so I was comfortable with Kelly keeping then honest. I do agree we could have saw a bit more of Polk who just puts his head down and plows. Very good point Green.

2 weeks in a row the defense essentially ending the game with a stand. redskins got the football on the bird’s 40 yard line ( for a 57 yard FG attempt) didn’t gain a yard to improve their chances and chickened out on a game tying FG attempt electing to try a timeout planned 4th and 10 play —-
2 back to back 3 point wins where the opposing QB has the ball in their hands to at least tie the game in last 2 minutes —- stuffed

Defensively the 49ers are struggling but thats two weeks in a row offenses have gotten right against us. Davis has struggled mightily in gameplanning against the run game early and they had all kinds of problems with an unbalanced line attack…which is a STAPLE of the 49ers run game under Harbaugh.

Put that with a nasty trend of starting slow and I like the matchup. However if the offense is finally in flow between Foles and the WRs if we are pointing points up early and forcing Kaepernick to be a passer Eagles have a shot at pulling this one out.

I dont like our chances at all without Kendricks because they has to be a spy component to Kaepernick and outside of getting creative with the rookie Smith…if he gets to the edges its a wrap for us.

Defensively the 49ers look like trash. That secondary may be just as bad as the Skins secondary we saw this weekend. If we can keep Justin Smith off of Foles he should be exploit the hell out of that matchup. Drew Stanton was looking off safeties all day and KILLING them over the middle.

Does anybody know if Trent Cole has played these first three games? Gonna have to start calling him Mr invisible, they have to put Marcus Smith out there to see what he can do, theirs no way he can play as bad as Cole’s been playing.

Donovan McNabb again stubbornly declined to endorse Nick Foles as the franchise QB after the 3rd straight come from behind victory.

Look E0S I’m a McNuggets fan but the only QB he’s going to endorse is him. Remember he basically did the same thing to Kolb and Vick.

Stephen a smith and Cary Williams (who just can’t wait to get out of here ) were critical of ejecting skins lineman for cheap shot on nick foles..I get it..controversy sells ..but Stephen A is now being joined in his clown car with Williams driving it …williams quote (quarter backs get hit) that will go over well in the locker room..here’s a guy in foles who I mentioned earlier ran up the library steps ,drank raw eggs and catapulted himself Into rocky lure in this town..peters act of protecting his guy ,nick getting the ADRIAN …I did it…award and williams and Stephen A ..,have to shit in there pants to draw attention to themselves ..one gets paid for being a buffoon ,the other one ,is tired because he plays needless down after down because 3 and out is a foreign subject to hi,…this guy is on a 3-0 team and throwing his grenades around with no regard for the effort these guys other than himself displayed on the field..suspend him now for abuse …he’s abusing the privilege of wearing green..

Chip just buried Cary Williams, Chip was asked about the comment and Chip said he doesn’t understand cause Williams was limited this week in practice, he only did light jogging wed n Thursday n fri was a walk through. Translation, Williams got burnt all game and practice was the only excuse he could come up with.

McCoy 22 yards on 19 carries, no screens Ertz nothing they pounded the QB all day, weaklink the secondary exposed like I said they would be. Talk to me when you understand football, and the things that go on within the game.

Going into the game many were raving about how formidable Washington’s front 7 was. The fact that we won with that front seven either sacking, hitting/hurrying our qb so many times; shutting down arguably the best rb in the game says more about our team (especially Foles) than it diminishes their front 7.

FUCK

Eagles C Jason Kelce reportedly needs surgery to repair a hernia.
It’s the latest blow to a mangled Eagles offensive line. Kelce will reportedly be out 6-8 weeks, leaving David Molk to step in at center. This is a unit that was already without RT Lane Johnson (4-game suspension), RT Allen Barbre (ankle) and stud LG Evan Mathis (knee). An offensive line that was nothing short of dominant last season is now playing at a bottom-five level.

If Kelce is out that long, then he will have to get back into condition to play. if Molk can step in for him and be effective, I would probably wait til the playoffs to bring Kelce back…as long as he is completely healed and ready to go strength and condition wise.

Kelce & Mathis will be moved to Full-Time IR by late October
as they are keeping their options open right now, but it’s very unlikely that these Players see the field again in 2014

People were going crazy in the Linc. Kelce injury really blows but hopefully the Oline will be in full strength at the end up the season with all those division games. 4-2 at the bye would be rly good…5-1 would be unbelievable considering all the major injuries on the line.

Defense has to step up now..cant expect Foles and the O to put up 30 points a game with absolutely no one on the offensive line right now…
The D is pretty healthy overall…they need to start playing at an average level at least

Carey Williams fucking blows and is nothing but an excuse making bum. Dude didn’t even practice this week…all he did was the light walkthrough on Friday…not only does this dude suck and make excuses for it but he creates unnecessary drama. Why say shit like that to the media after a huge win (in spite of your pathetic play)? Go to Chip like a man in his office if you have a problem. Fuck him cant wait to he is gone he is stealing money right now…Play boykins, don’t care if he is small, at least he wont get toasted all day and then pull excuses out of his ass.

Said during the game that was hernia to Kelce. That’s a bad injury to have and I highly doubt its a 4-6 week injury.

HUGE BLOW to this team. IMO he’s the player we could least afford to lose on the line.

But damn can we quietly send Casey Matthews out of town with the changes made on the Oline and when Lane Johnson comes back can someone kick him squarely in the ass for being stupid?

Andy Reid’s last year here we lost 4 of the five starters on the offensive line. By the end it looked like this – Dennis Kelly, King Dunlap, Dallas Reynolds, Evan Mathis, Jake Scott…We won 4 games – and the biggest reason for that was the offensive line…

This team will be in trouble unless Kelly can make some big adjustments. Can Sanchez play Guard?

Agreed zilents…I think that Stoutland is one of the better coaches on the staff and he will prepare all of his players to execute. It gets tougher and tougher the more injuries they get, but if they are able to weather through this middle part of the season they will have Mathis and Kelce returning for the last 4 games or so, just hope that they are in good enough shape to keep up with the Kelly Track Meet.
