Eagles-49ers Preview

ChipKelly1Well Eagle fans, this game is going to tell us a good bit about our team.  A mixed bag of emotions, thoughts and feelings I think summarizes our stance thus far.  Pleased with the 3-0 start, but worried about getting too sold on what we have witnessed.

Even though the 49ers are not playing up to the standard that put them in the NFC Championship game the last three years, they are still a tough opponent, and have more on the line than the margin that Vegas says they will beat us by.

The blueprint to success for the 49ers and the Eagles are from different stratospheres.   The 49ers are a smash-mouth style team, both on the offensive and defensive side of the football.  They have a big, athletic quarterback, depth and talent at the wide-receiver position, an athletic freak at tight-end, a proven veteran at running back and a very solid offensive line.  With all of that; their offense is not the unit that makes the 49ers tick, that would be across the line of scrimmage with their defense.

The face of the 49ers is their defense, led by veterans Justin Smith and Patrick Willis.  This defense can do serious damage, which is the payoff when you draft well in the early rounds and commit picks to your defense at position groups that are “game changers.”  They are missing key contributors, pass rush specialist Aldon Smith and Pro-Bowl linebacker NaVorro Bowman.  Still, the talent that Patrick Willis possesses is at a level we as Eagles fans wish was sporting the midnight green on game day.

Like last season, the 49ers have come out of the 1-2 after three games and are playing with an urgency that could force them out of their comfort zone with how they prepare for the Eagles.

As for the Eagles, Foles demonstrated “toughness” last week that gained a ton of respect by those doubting his leadership and ability to be a long term starter in this league.  The wide receivers became part of the offense, and although the defense was a push over to Kirk Cousins all day long, when they needed a turnover in the fourth quarter, they made it happen.

Even if the Eagles rushing attack was spot on, it wouldn’t be one of my “three” key components going into this week.   The 49ers like to blitz, which is not great news for the offensive line, but opens up opportunities for big gains with quick dump offs to the playmakers.

– “YAC” is my #1 point of emphasis for the offense.   Quick reads by the QB, use the short throws to substitute what you may not get with the run game, a modified West Coast approach.

-The health status of Kendricks is #1 for the Eagles defense.  If he is unable to suit up, there is not a single linebacker who can provide that spy-like option for the running ability of Kaepernick.

-Boykins.  The Eagles have screwed up with drafting many defensive players currently on this roster, yet they found a gem with fourth rounder Boykins.  Somehow, someone came up with this restriction of him only being a “nickel” cornerback, when all he did was make huge play after huge play last season.  Stupidity and ignorance, whether coach Davis, Kelly or another person who has their hand in the cookie jar with this bonehead decision.  Get him on the field, he is your best cornerback and arguably best player in the secondary with only the small sample we have with Jenkins.

Prediction

Alright, time for the nitty-gritty.  The odds are not in the favor the Eagles.  We are looking to continue our winning ways; the 49ers are looking to salvage their season.

I believe we are going to see some “twists” in our offense; Chip is going to use his “big” people to beat up on the smaller people, although the 49ers have a lot of big people.

-I envision a lot of motion at the line of scrimmage in addition to bunched formations with short routes that allows Nick options.

-On defense, I expect much the same as far as effort and execution.  Little pass rush, a high completion percent for Kaepernick who is not very accurate as a quarterback, but I think we do a nice job of keeping their rushing attack on check, and the Eagles actually outgain the 49ers on the ground game.

-Like much of what we have endured thus far, it’s not going to be pretty at times, but I’m predicting the same result.

Eagles-26   49ers-24

Jeff ..I respect some of your opinions ,I’ve been banging the drum ,as well ,but not only for Boykin ,who simple ,is always making plays and has that nose for the ball..he’s challenged physically in stature but he compensates ,with smarts ..we need also add Graham ,and curry ,as the most ,effective way to insure your back end isn’t exposed ,you need apply a pass rush ..they ,have no excuses on defense for a slow wake up call..Bill Davis has coached the team he’s playing, and coached as a card as adivison foe ,so familiarity ,you’d hope yields a game plan ,that doesn’t put the challenged offensive line into any obvious come from behind mode vs the defense ..I’d also add discipline ,the niners have shown fizzures in there discipline and just lost to a back up quarter back..if they load thbox ,I’m confident they’ve picked a poison ,they can’t deal with ,as Maclin is playing his ass off ..I’m also hoping Chip rewards Celek who was as heroic as Peterson ,blocking his ass off ,under the radar ,but giving Nick precious seconds ,to throw 3 consecutive games of 300 yds. If he does as we expect he’ll beat chunky soup boy …with 4 in succession..choke on that songs …Kool ..ha

silver lining — the eagles D did stuff the opponent 2 weeks in a row in the 2 minute drill forcing a 4th down incompletion to end the game. Additionally both teams only needed a field goal to tie game. Luck on a 4th and 5 and Cousins on a 4th and 10.

New York Giants pass rush….a real pass rush is making Cousins loik rather pedestrian. The much maligned NY offense is making the vaunted Washington defense look ….not so great. I think the washington hype comes to a screeching halt.

The game against Wsh was a war. Your seeing the effects right now. Skins D has nothing left. Injuries are mounting.

The Eagles played the same game and have to travel cross-country.

Very difficult. Run the ball a million times and let that clock roll. That’s what Id do anyway.

I am beyond hoping Kelly watches this tape and does not drop Foles back 35x or he’s going to get planted in the 2nd half when Mash Unit oline fades.

On another note, I don’t know how people think the Niners wont score against us. Our defense is horrendous. Vegas has us losing this game for a reason. I see the Niners running the ball nonstop. I hope I am wrong and the D shows up/we win this game, but I just don’t see it. PLayoff game for the Niners on a Sunday. We will put up a fight but I don’t think it will be enough. If Cousins can throw for 400 yards against us, Kap should hit 500 easily if he is as good as people hype him up to be. Without Kendricks, who the hell is going to cover Vernon Davis? Casey Mathews? Thats going to be ugly

With our invisible passrush, our anemic secondary & Shady struggling, this could get ugly early. This could very well be a shootout. SF needs this game badly at home. I see no way we win. SF 41- Birds 34. But hey, I had them 2-2 after 4, so I could be wrong. Got to get to Kap & create TO’s, or we are fini!

4-2 5-1 going into the bye and they are in a very good spot going into the second half of the year.

Looking at the schedules of the other teams in the division the Skins will probably be done by next week and they have a brutal schedule 2 of the next 3. They needed this win.

All this damn defense needs to be is decent this year. Anywhere from 15-20. They stink like shit right now.

I had this Giants game against the Skins how the Eagles should have looked against them. They were so overrated by so many on here etc….but our defense was even worse than anticipated.

I’ll say it again…

RG3 is a quite capable QB. Who shouldn’t be in a traditional pocket passing offense, at least without some time (more than an off season will provide) to adjust.

Cousins was NEVER more talented than he was. He was NOT and is NOT a better QB than RG3 – he’s more comfortable in an offense that fits his skill set, but comfortable does nto equal good.

I said he would turn into a pumpkin and he did.

It was DUMB of Gruden to radically change the offense to something that DID NOT fit the natural talents of the QB he KNEW was the starter when taking the job.

That. Was. Dumb.

And you could kind of see him giddy about the prospect of playing Cosuins. Yeah. That’s not working out so well for him.

Like a commenter on Hogs Haven said: It’s like you got to live with the side chick for a bit and realize that what you really want is your wife back.

On ONE LEG RG3 has NEVER had a 5 turnover game. He’s NEVER looked that bad. Ever.

It’s not even close.

This is same Bob who threw the Bob to no one in the end zone vs the Eagles, when down here it’s pretty much consensus it’s because he forgot what down it was.

Lmao just because Cousins turned I to a pumpkin doesn’t mean you’re over hyping of RG3 makes any sense.

Bobs promises is gone. His legs and body are done. He was special with world class speed. He gets hawked down by DL ALL THE TIME now.

Kirk is a system QB. Jay can do more with Kirk now and focus on other parts of the team. If they had real management.

Putting your eggs in Bobs basket requires changing the OL etc….on the promise that he will stay healthy and can pick up a new offense.

I saw one 49er game, week 2 against the Bears. They looked horrible in the 2nd half as Kaepernick was really really bad, he tossed 3 interception in the 2nd half. It appears that he was definitely gun shy the following week against the Cardinals checking down everything afraid to repeat his disastrous 3 interception performance the previous week. Hope Kaepernick is still skittish Sunday afternoon.

EOS if the can fix their first half words and put up points early it will benefit the defense and would throw tons of pressure on Kap to be perfect which will ultimately lead him to make mistakes.

I don’t defer to the 2nd half this game try and jump out to the lead early. Spread them out and take advantage of that week secondary.

Cole/Graham/Curry are on my shit list…. I even bumped down Bradley Fletcher for them lol

off topic — I was watching morning Comcast Sports highlights and on the bottom to the screen scroll they zapped Ryan Howard from the Phillies. He went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts yesterday, they then proceeded to info the viewer that this is the 25 time this season Ryan Howard struck out 4 times in a game and leads the majors in strikeouts with 188. Ouch.

The enigma that has become Marcus Smith will split time with Emmaneul Acho and Casey Matthews again this weekend at MLB.

The “Enigma” of Marcus Smith II… Really ….
Most knowledgeable Football people really did not expect much
contribution from MSII in his Rookie Season.. as he was Drafted to be groomed and learn and eventually replace Trent Cole for the 2015 Season and will see very little action in 2014 outside of injuries to other LB’s
What’s the Enigma about him?? He’s not ready physically or mentally at this stage of his development, I believe 90% of Football People/Coach’s know this .. So why are Fans putting unrealistic expectations on him for the 2014 Season.. because he was Drafted #26… makes no sense..

This is a must win for the 49ers and a game that EAgles just want to
get thru without further injuries, a long Road Trip after a physical game last week vs the Redskins foreshadows a flat performance by the Eagles
The best thing they have going for them this week is the fact that Chip Kelly loves to beat Harbaugh so it’s personal for these 2 Coach’s so Kelly will pull out all the stops to try and beat Harbaugh..I am just not sure the Eagles Players are up for the challenge this week
I am hoping for a close game with Eagles having a chance to win at the end, but my brain tells me this will be a lopsided game due the sense of urgency that the 49ers should have right out of the gate
Either way, this game means little in the big scheme of things for the Eagles, where for the 49ers, it’s a “must win”

So the Eagles are playing with no pressure. I hate bi-coastal games, but we seemed to do pretty well last year in Oakland.

I would not be surprised to see the Eagles win big here, no one would expect it with all of their injuries.

With the state of the offensive line, I would like to see them take a page from the Redskins game, and like the Skins did, use short drops and quick releases. It should help the inexperience line and may keep Foles from taking a beating.

Also, I would not be surprised to see McCoy have a great game. Again, the OL is patchwork at best, but Shady is a pretty prideful guy and I can see him wanting to put last weeks game behind him.

The real story of this team will come down to the defense, as always. Will they continue to bend or finally break this week? Word is that Marcus Smith is getting time at Kendrick’s spot inside, let’s hope that they use him as a spy on Kap.

GO BIRDS !!!!

I really believe that the Eagles game against the Redskins “tore their hearts out” and they had nothing left in the tank for the Giants game.

I think that I heard a stat this morning, and I might have it wrong, but over the past 16 games, teams playing the Eagles are 4-12 the following week. Is it due to the pace of the game or what, who knows, but it is interesting to note. Might not be something to consider when making a wager also.

I also think that the Giants will be the Team to beat in the NFC East and not the Eagles.. They have a young, improving OL, 2 Good RB’s
Good Receivers and 2 TE’s with the Best Front 4 in the NFC East along with the Best Secondary in the NFC East.. Their Giants LB Corps is their weak spot as is their Special Teams Units

Yes, they have some exciting you players, especially at TE, but you forget that Eli can become a turnover machine at any moment. I don’t see their defense keeping up with our offense. The Birds are still the team to beat in the east.

Has the Eagles Front 7 put any Pressure on any QB yet ??
Cripes, Chad Henne was tearing them up in a half of Football
Kirk Cousins was hardly touched while tossing for 475 yards..
Colts OC/Coach’s took the ball out of Luck’s hands for some strange reason.. This Eagles Front 7 is in the bottom 5 of the NFL

Its a big difference though Paul when the offense doesnt generate offense in the first half. The defense will still be terrible but some flaws will be hidden if we can start fast early. When you force other teams into keeping up scoring wise that will aid the defense…

And yes that is my only hope right now with this defense…that they are built to play with a lead only.

But you cannot count on fast starts by the Offense every week
These Other Teams, Coach’s and Players are paid to play also..
Bottom line to me, if Eagles, over the course of the Season, don’t win the Turnover Battle and get 1-2 more Possessions per game then their Opponents and somehow generate some Pass Rush versus the better QB’s in the NFL, then they will not beat the Good Teams, plain and simple… They are fun and exciting to watch, but can’t stop any other good Offense either..

You’re doing the best “this” in the league again…relax its a week to week league…none of this will mean nothing come week 16.

If you saw 58s play in pass coverage and how he continually was lost in pass coverage and the amount of broken coverage last night. They can be picked apart easily.

Jon Beason is ok. His career was on the outs coming out of Carolina because of injury and play. He had an ok year with the Giants although most of their games were meaningless and his play wasnt above average. Hes injured again and breaking down again.

Comparing a guy who played one year with the Giants to the a 3 4 year starter in Ryans isnt close.

It’s not about 1 Player IJ, the Giants Unit is much better than the Eagles D Unit… The Eagles O is slightly better the Giants O
Overall Advantage is Giants over the Eagles when you go Postion Group, by Position Group with the current Injuries the Eagles OL have.. Did Manning even get hit last evening ?

Could the Eagles Run the Ball on that Redskins Front 7
The Giants sure did…

We killed Orakpo, Hatcher, Davis for the Skins for the Giants. Skins D is overrated but Hatcher on a bad hamstring playing 4 days later was a big factor.

They didnt run the football. The Giants spread them out 4wr and did the same thing the Eagles did. The Eagles were playing 3 guys that werent starters and one guy in Gardner that didnt need to be out there.

The Eagles O is more than slightly better than the Giants O. The Eagles O line skill positions and QB are better than the Giants.

Also if you watched the game the Skins played more nickel than they played in the Eagles game because the Giants took the Eagles game plan against the Skins. The Giants ran the ball almost 35x PLUS last week. Thats a null argument because one weeks game doesnt compare to another.

Its the same argument you used in overblowing the Washington/Jax game as a precursor to Eagles Skins…no relation whatsoever.

Redskins stopped the Eagles run game because they stayed in their base 3-4 and were murdered through the air. Copycat league…Giants took the exact game plan. 3-4wr sets all over the field. Just like I told you the EVERY TEAM THE SKINS PLAYED would do to them…spread them out 3-4wr and eat them alive.

Paul…I think you need to slow down the whole “Our O is only slightly better then Giants O”. They hung 45 on the Redskins sure, but that was aided with 30+ points off turnovers, two of those turnovers coming in the redzone. Considering our Offense it tops in the league and we only scored 26 points in the first halves of games, I think our Offense is light years ahead of the Giants. I agree that their D is significantly better than ours, but that will be the story with every team we play this year (that’s what happens when your D is bottom 5 in every category). We all have come to grips with the fact that our Offense will have to carry us in every game this year.

I cant disagree on the state of the line now Paul until I see the new kid play Center against a real defense. What is lost with Kelce cannot be replaced so he has to be able to do something above average.

However I will take the line next week barring injury with Herremans Lane and Peters against the Giants offensive line.

I would like to see if they pair Herremans next to Peters and have one dominant side like Mathis and Peters or slide him next to Lane.

Their SAfties Eric Reid & L Bethea can be beat in Pass Coverage
They have Rookie Safety Jimmie Ward playing as a Nickel CB Back versus 3-4 WR Sets which is a big time mis-match for the WR’s..
The Key is 1st Down Calls and PRoduction, If Eagles can stay out of 2nd/3rd and Long Plays, they have a chance, but running McCoy on 1st Downs is not going to work, just like it didn’t work vs the Redskins
Eagles need to Pass,Pass, Pass to start the game, soften up the LB and Safeties, then poop out their very thin DL with the uptempo, then pound the Rock late against a worn down Defense
If Eagles try to 50/50% Run in the 1st half, they are playing into the only strength the 49ers have on Defense and that’s stopping the Run
It’s Coach’s Kelly/Shurmurs Game on how they want to call it, but this will require a Pass Oriented Game Plan then go to the Run and to be honest, it’s how it will be against most of the Eagles Opponents who will game plan to stop McCoy and Running Game first and then take their chances with Foles and WR’s beating them over the Top
This is how I see the Defensive Coordinators 49ers,Cardinals,Seahawks,Giants,Cowboys,Panthers, Packers all playing the Eagles..

I don’t think we grasp how compelling this Eagle squad is at the moment ..sometimes it’s hard to see your nose ,as it’s too close to your face …eagles are one of the hottest teams having won 10 of there last 11 regular season games and 6 of there last 7 road games …it’s interesting that we as fans get ,sucked into thinking ,unlike a race horse ,past performance means little in translating the expectations of the following week .Its obvious to those who don’t have a prejudice or bias that certain posters (they know who they are ) have an agenda..I have no inclination to address that buffoonery …Maclin and the offense are going to delight in finding many innovations this week in attacking San Fran…the special teams have been just that ..Now the 600 pound gorilla in the room is the defense …the scheme ,the lack of a pass rush ,personnel ,will ultimately be this teams Achilles ..that said Kendrick’s insertion ,makes this a more formidable unit ..unlike the offense which is diverse ,I’m of the opinion Kendrick’s is pivotal …his loss if ,he doesn’t play ,isn’t something that can be schemed around ..next man up ,just isn’t going to cut it..I think lasts week implosion by Williams and fletcher ,will have gotten the coaches attention ,and I’m certain they’ve been taken to task..I will bluntly state this is a special Eagles team ,going into Frisco and stepping on there throats is what I expect and unlike Pman ..I’m not predicting one team will emerge victorious ,because only 1 team will show up …the others season will lie in the wake ..why not us ?

Both teams have matchup problems in this one….both are dealing with key injuries.

Whoever takes advantage wins.

49ers run game and Kap on the edges vs Nick Foles 3-4wr sets.

I will take the past teams ability to run on us (Was and Indy) as something that leaves a bad taste….Harbaugh loves those jumbo and unbalanced lines and still gets some great run lanes with Kaep and Gore.

I don’t believe DC Billy Davis is a championship level DC for he simply is not agree sibs enough… He does make adjustments but in 20 Games with the Eagles, I’ve seen time and time again allow young, inexperienced QB’s get way too comfortable in Starting out Games
and then bring more pressure later in games..
He’s a classic “bend don’t break” kind of DC..
I want to see an aggressive DC to match Eagles Offense..
Championship Teams Defenses dictate their pace and will on opposing Offenses and I just don’t see this from Davis who is far too reactionary
In my opinion..

This is definitely a game where multiple TE sets and use of both McCoy and Sproles on the field could benefit the line alot.

I do agree for some reason the backups pass block much better than run block. If that is the strength of this unit now then spread em out air em out.

With Herremans and Peters on the edges I think pass pro wise I think we fine….just I worry about push upfront and since Nick is statue that could be a problem.

Cooper needs to haul in some one on ones this game. RedZone efficiency will be vital…field goals will not cut it.

We have our franchise guy so we shouldn’t care…wait except Songs who bought turd jerseys for his kids. 2. Don’t panic, the skins were pumped for the birds and we ran them ragged and demoralized them. They had nothing for the Giants. Cousins hit every wide open Giant he saw in the 2nd half. Let’s be real the Giants D didn’t have to work for this win. 3. No matter what happens this weekend, The Eagles are legit. When we get totally healthy think of the problems other teams will face. Niners are desperate and my head says it will be rough. My heart says Eagles break the Niners 42-17. Last but not least I follow the threads during the week and the games, I try not to post much because it just raises my blood pressure. He lost Steve Smith….who he didnt have a great connection with. Rest of those receivers were trash.

He has his favorite receiver in the team still and that’s Greg Olson.

Theory doesn’t hold up.

“He lost Steve Smith….who he didnt have a great connection with…”

Yeah do you watch Panthers games?

The actual argument was that he targeted Smith TOO much and that losing him would force him to look for other receivers.

So yeah…your theory doesn’t hold up much.

And Olsen, while sure handed gets NO Yac. NONE. NONE….NONE.

The receivers were ALWAYS gonna be issue that’s not me saying that, that’s pretty much anyone writing about the Panthers this off season.

And Ginn was an excellent return man and good on deep routes – something they haven’t replaced.

So how long you going to roll with “Newton is great – IF ONLY he had a better team…..”

‘Cause that was the Vick mantra for about 12 years….you think you can hold that line with Newton for 12 years too?/

Doubtful.

Newton shrivels in big games. Deal with it.

And Steve Smith would be correct
I am not sure if there’s a QB with as much physical talent and ability
As Cam Newton in the NFL, but he simply does not read Defenses well
And quick enough to be an Elite QB and now that he’s Year 4,
I doubt that he ever will… Locks on 1 Receiver too often,
Holds the ball too long until Receiver is open and then slings it..
He rarely throws his receivers open and appears to cautious
In the pocket instead of trusting his arm & Receivers
A bigger version of Mike Vick, is who he reminds me of his game
Play and will end up in the middle of the pack statistically
And winning games wise…

Crapernick is a bad QB.

BTW – why not intentional grounding when he tossed it way out of bounds from the pocket?

UGH. There goes Boykin’s season I think.

Why 8 passes and 4 rushes in a game they’re leading with no Oline? Andy Reid?

They’re still just off by a step. Balls are a foot away (aka that last throw to Maclin). A little troubling, but still should be worked out at some point….I think…….

Keep the game close. There are plays out there. We should be able to hit a big one.
