The Giants Are The Biggest NFC East Threat To The Eagles

EliManning1The NFC East is no lock for the Philadelphia Eagles, both the New York Giants (2-2) and the Dallas Cowboys (3-1) are making a case for some respect to be thrown their way.

The Cowboys are currently tied with the Eagles for first place in the division and are leading the entire NFL in rushing.  The New York Giants like the Cowboys are feeling pretty good about themselves after blowing out their opponent on national television in week 4.

So which of the two poses a bigger threat to the Eagles moving forward, it’s the team who has multiple Super Bowl rings over the last decade; the New York Giants.

After a preseason in which it appeared that Eli should retire and the Ryan Nassib career should begin, the first two games of the season looked much the same.  The offense was brutal but the defense minus a few blown assignments early in week 1 on Calvin Johnson looked solid.

COACH

How many guys are making the call in Dallas?  Tom Coughlin may not be the most liked head coach in the league, but there is respect, and it is clear that he is the commander in charge.

*edge goes to NYG

QB

Eli has and will never be a great quarterback, but he can get streaky at the right time, and make the big time throw when the game is on the line.  Romo has also proven he can make the big throw, the issue for him; the recipient of the throw is often an opposing defender.

*edge goes to NYG

RB

Demarco Murray is running like a man possessed; up until he aggravates some former injury and the team is forced to rely on Dunbar and Randle to get the job done.  Jennings is holding his own for the Giants, and Tom Coughlin who is hesitant with his use of rookie running backs, is slowing provided 4th rounder Andre Williams some change of pace touches, and he is showing the same results when he was running well throughout the preseason.

*edge goes to DAL

WR/TE

-Dez Bryant is a monster, and second year player Terrence Williams leads the team with four receiving touchdowns after the first four games.  Jason Witten is still a name defenses respect, although it’s clear that his better days are behind him.

-Cruz is showing life after a poor 2013 campaign, Randle is showing improvement in year 3, tight-end Donnell is coming out of nowhere and the team has yet to have its first round pick Beckham Jr. on the field this season.

-Dez is top five in the league, but the Giants have more options in the passing game and can provide more matchup issues for opposing defenses.

*edge goes to NYG

O-LINE

The Cowboys dedicated first round picks to their offensive over the last couple of years, and it’s showing.  The Giants are an improved unit from last season, but are nowhere near the level that the Cowboys are at.

*edge goes to DAL

DEFENSE

The Giants I felt coming into the season had the best defense in the NFC East.  With all of the injuries and players lost to free agency by the Cowboys, the Giants possess a better defensive line, line-backer group and secondary then what the Cowboys can put on the field.

D-Line- *edge goes to NYG

LB’s- *edge goes to NYG

Secondary-*edge goes to NYG

The Giants are a better football team when you combine their track record, roster and coaching staff.  At best is 9-7 for the season, a game better than the 8-8 Cowboys.

The Giants and Cowboys won impressively last week, while the Eagles suffered a loss.  The standings are a bit surprising for a division that was labeled as ours.

At the end of the season, the Eagles will enjoy playoff football while the rest of the NFC East will work on their golf game, pros use this indoor golf simulator.

Bigger threat to us moving forward are the Giants, but don’t be worried, even at their best, they can’t and will not catch us.

The Washington Redskins are the biggest threat to the eagles. They have Desean Jackson. He make everyone better. Do you think Pierre Garcon could catch 100 balls without him? Alfred Morris can’t get 1000 yards without Djax occupying the safeties.
What is this nonsense about Dez Bryant and Victor Cruz — they aren’t as fast as DJax who has to be triple teamed.

1) The Cowboys are if they stay healthy on Offense and rely on their Running Game and Young OL and minimize Romo’s trying to win every game as in past Seasons… They have a solid OL, the NFL best pure RB in D Murray, a big Time WR in Bryant, a HOF TE in Witten and up and coming WR in Terrance Williams..
Their Defense is poor, but they hustle and run to the ball and have come up with Turnovers so far this Season. But with a strong Running Game and a patient Offense, they win the Time of Possession battle and wear teams out and then hit you over the top with big pass plays down the field…
They’ve played 1 Poor Half of Football when they opened up vs the 49ers on opening day, outside of this, they’ve played solid, smart Football

The Giants are probably the most Solid Team, Offensively and Defensively
and have a great RB tandem in Jennings/Matthews, a new TE Duo of Donnell and Fells to go along with Cruz and improved Randle and we’ll see what Rookie Beckham can do now that he’s about healthy and will be like a Randall Cobb is to the Packers… lots of slants, bubble routes, reverse’s..
Remember that Giants OC McAdoo came from Green Bay and loves to spread the field out and utilize 3-4 WR Sets
Defensively, the GIants have the Best DL by far and get a lot of Pressure,
Free-Agent DE Robert Ayers has played well for them as has 3rd Year DE Demontre Moore who has taken a while to adjust to the NFL.. Add a healthy JPP and Kiwanuka with Veterans C Jenkins, M Patterson in the middle and they have experience,size and athleticism;
The GIants have a Solid Secondary with best Safety Tandem in the Division with A Rolle & S Brown, good CB’s in DRC,Thurmond & Amukarama
The Giants Weakness is their LB play and Special Teams Play

Eagles are not heads and shoulders above any of their NFC East Rivals…
and especially with the OL issues the Eagles are going to have to deal with all Season long.. Yes Lane Johnson is back this Week and Kelce/Mathis maybe in November but you can’t expect Players who have not played 1-2 Months and or recovering from Injuries to be at their Top of their Games
If Eagles don’t get their Running Game going, they will not win the NFC East
All other 3 Teams can and will commit to the Running Game, will the Eagles

Josh Huff, Jaylen Watkins and Chris Polk all should have been placed
on Short Term IR to start this Season and then the Eagles could have had more Depth at LB & OL and utilized their Roster better

I’m not sure but I think only one player can be put on short term IR for 8 weeks ( no more no less time frame ) — the birds used their one time short term IR designation on Evan Mathis.

NFL Rankings of All RB’s after 4 Weeks of the 2014 Season

#1) D Murray (Cowboys) 99 Attempts – 534 Yards – 5.4 Avg – 5 TD’s
#3) R Jennings (Giants) 81 Attempts – 341 Yards – 4.2 Avg – 2 TD’s
#5) A Morris (Redskins) 71 Attempts – 316 Yards – 4.5 Avg – 3 TD’s
#21) L McCoy (Eagles) 70 Attempts – 192 Yards – 2.7 Avg – 1 TD

No excuses, No Bullshit about Foles, the OL, Brett Celek, Riley Cooper
the loss of D-Jax or M Vick.. The Eagles Offense and Season will go as RB Leasean McCoy and right now, it’s not going too well.. The Eagles don’t get this fixed, their 2014 Season will not be good nor will they make the Post-Season.. It’s Pretty simple when you think about it.. The Rest is just noise and distractions from what really is the Problem with this 2014 Eagles Offense

no doubt the Eagles playoff dreams as married to Lesean McCoy and his success. I choose not to blame Shady because I believe the OL subs are preventing him from succeeding. I am really concerned about David Molk – I don’t think he is an NFL player.

It’s funny since I keep reading on here how the Giants & Redskins OL suck and that their QB’s stink and yet they have placed 2 Runners in the Top 5 of Rushing in the NFL…
Giants Jennings is splitting some carries with Rookie Andrew Williams
and Redskins RB Morris splits some carries with Ray Helu so I don’t want Eagles Fans to say that since Sproles is getting carriers, that this has impacted McCoy’s effectiveness.. Let’s be honest about it, McCoy has been extremely disappointing in 2014 with a 2.7 Yard Carry average
which are Trent Richardson type of Numbers… It is what it is…

alright, I’ll pile on. He is running out of bounds for a loss instead of falling forward for at least a half yard better. He is stopping, changing direction and trying to turn the corner on the opposite side the play was intended to run and losing yardage. ( My high school basketball coach had a rule you can dunk in a game but if you miss your sitting next to him since you cost the team 2 points on a simple easy layup )

The same deleted o lone is an excuse for shady, not foles
We recognize that pass blocking is different than the run block. But don’t you think there is some connection between foles accuracy drop this year and a shambles of an offensive line

Or I guess last year was just a mirage

Give foles an o line. Even without djax, marked improvement

THE 49ERS DEFENSE KNEW THE OFFENSIVE PLAYS THE EAGLES WERE GOING TO RUN!

There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that suggests the Niners’ defense was picking up on the Eagles’ tells Sunday, which helps explain why a normally potent attack was shut down and shut out.

Matt Tobin said after the game that there were times when the San Francisco defense seemed to know exactly what was coming. David Molk echoed that sentiment on Thursday.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say the Niners as a group, but certain players within that group. I don’t know how they knew but they just [did],” said Molk.
Safety Antoine Bethea was one such player. His secret? He decoded a Nick Foles signal. From SFGate.com:

Bethea, who wore a microphone during the game (49ers.com video here), knew what was coming before the Eagles snapped the ball facing 1st-and-10 at the 49ers’ 20-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Foles surveyed the defense and called an audible by motioning with his hands over his helmet. In response, Bethea began pointing to his right and yelling: “Hey! Hey! Run! Run! Run! Run!”

The result: Defensive tackle Demarcus Dobbs drilled running back LeSean McCoy for a four-yard loss on a sweep left.

Earlier in the game, Bethea had told his teammates on the sideline a run was coming when Foles made a back-and-forth motion over his helmet, a tip that earned him an approving slap on the shoulder pad from defensive line coach Jim Tomsula.

“He saw it coming. He saw it coming. You saw it on film,” said Molk. “He’d be pointing out [where the play was going].”

According to Matt Barkley, the Eagles change their signals up just about every week so the Rams likely won’t benefit from the Niners’ discovery. But that wasn’t the only issue when it came to predictability last Sunday.

The Eagles’ third and fourth-down plays from the one-yard line against the 49ers were featured on the NBC Sports show Turning Point this week. As the piece explained, the fact that the Niners had the perfect coverage in those situations was no accident. They had seen both plays before on tape, including in the Eagles’ win over Oakland last year. Both plays against the Raiders resulted in touchdowns. This time around, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio seemed to be waiting for them.

“I don’t know if you ever plan for two plays from inside the two with the game on the line, but I will tell you this: the two calls that we made on third down and fourth down, we practiced during the week in those situations,” said Fangio.

Added cornerback Perrish Cox: “The two calls we had, I think they were actually the only two calls we went over at practice Friday. It worked out perfect.”

Bethea told reporters after the game that the Niners’ defense had a feel for what the Eagles were going to run based off the formations they were in. Asked about this, Chip Kelly suggested that he was limited in how much of the playbook he could use Sunday because of the situation up front.

“You self-scout yourself in terms of what you’re doing from a formation standpoint. But there are also sometimes when you are a little bit more limited in your game plan just because of who you have available to run what you want to run,” he said. “To say, ‘Hey, this would be great to run this because they won’t think it’s coming,’ well if your guy doesn’t think it’s coming either it’s going to be real difficult for you. You’ve got to know what you’ve got in the lineup and obviously you had some younger guys that were playing so we weren’t probably as wide open, as expansive as we could have been if we had guys out there with a little more experience.”

The Eagles get Lane Johnson back this week, but will be operating without Jason Kelce and Evan Mathis for the next four games. It will be interesting to see how much that ties Kelly’s hands in terms of what he is able to do schematically, because it seems pretty clear that some schematic tweaks are in order.

Cosell on Nick Foles

NFL Films Senior Producer Greg Cosell doesn’t see a different Nick Foles when he watches the tape, but rather a quarterback that is facing a new set of obstacles.

Really, it’s the defenses that are changing in Cosell’s view. Take, for instance, the Redskins and Niners. Both units largely remained in their base 3-4 against three-receiver sets when playing the Eagles, he said, which made it that much more difficult for the ground game to get going. With the run game stymied, Foles is frequently finding himself in third-and-longs .

“When Foles gets into more long-yardage situations — it’s tougher for any quarterback, that’s not just Nick Foles — but Foles is not the kind of quarterback that is going to stand in the pocket, sit on his back foot and drill the ball consistently between defenders,” he said.

Not only is Foles in a tougher spot when it comes to down and distance, but the windows he is being asked to throw into are often tighter than they were a year ago in Cosell’s opinion.

“Last year because all of this was new to defensive coordinators, we all agree that it looked last year like there were a ton of open receivers, which doesn’t happen that much in the NFL,” said Cosell.

“I think if you look at Foles the player, what you likely see is this: He’s got a good arm but not a gun; he’s not a power thrower, not a drive thrower. He’s a little more of a finesse thrower than a drive thrower. He does not have quick feet. There is no quick-twitch to his movement. There’s no explosive lower-body movement to him. When you look at Foles, I think what you see is a quarterback that needs the system to work for him and provide defined reads and good throws with the route concepts, just the whole system. He needs the system to work for him…

“I don’t think he’s really any different [from last year]. Because he’s not a quick-twitch guy, when he doesn’t feel comfortable making a throw he’ll start to look a little awkward because he’s not quick twitch, he moves around. There’s been more of that this year and I think that’s because defenses have done a really good job with the Eagles. Now it’s up to the Eagles to respond.”

Amazing teams are defending 3 receiver sets with a base 3-4 but nah DJax not being here has nothing to do with that, so yes now the Eagles need to adapt. So Vinnie does that answer your question why Kelly is taking so many deep shots?

I love how the Maclin evaluation is changing because he’s been as impactful and on pace to beat the stats of a certain other WR….lol

Understand the position and stop viewing everything like its Madden football and all you want is 99 speed.

Oh and if Maclin does or up better numbers….than those people are sick between a rock and a hard place because if they take Maclin is not 1 they have to give pause to Kelly or Foles lol.

Kid was the 2nd look in an offense and still put up totals that rivaled his counterpart. Best combo of route running hands and could work the middle of the field. Gets open and can stretch the field.

Stop the nonsense already.

What Mac evaluation has changed?

Macs a mediocre receiver. He’s not bad he’s not great..he’s okay. Solid if you will. Did that change all of a sudden?

He didn’t earn the self tacklin label on accident. Or did you miss all those years of his career prior to this one?

And yes Mac might FINALLY get a 1000 yd season. Whoop De Doo…

He’s got awhile to go to catch up to DJax.

like I said NO ONE IS SCARE OF MAC. No one. How many yards he have last game?

Oh okay.

It’s only “hype” when you don’t agree.

Continuing to talk about the greatness of a receiver who is a former first round draft pick and has never notched a 1000 yd season is well the definition of Hype.

Mac hasn’t done anything to deserve it. One circus catch aside. Glad to see he’s finally doing something worthy of a highlight reel.

I mean I’m gonna stick to my NFC West = loss predictions just to keep ish simple. But I have no real expectation that the Ealges lose.

If they win it’s likely ’cause their facing a 28th ranked defense.

Mac should have good numbers. Someone has to catch the ball and Cooper and Ertz don’t seem to be getting the job done as late.

Lets just hope he stays healthy the entire year but like EHL posted teams are not scared of his deep speed which is making the field smaller and the windows tighter. So I guess at this point not having Jackson is hurting Foles and the offense.

For those who continue to talk out their ass about foles’ supposed lack of arm strength he rated out as one of the strongest arms ever at the combine by the only objective measure, a radar gun

Also, for those who still talk out there ass that he can’t throw the deep ball, I believe he led the league last year in deep throw completions and this year acoording to a gunslinger website, foles throws more deep balls than any other qb, in part fueled by his comeback performances. Granted, he leads the league probably in missed opportunities, but he’s not a systems or dink and dunk qb. He’s shown he is a big play, clutch qb that currently lacks consistency, accuracy. He needs to get consistent again which will occur when the oline is back

I think Foles inconsistency and accuracy issues are more so due to his timing and mechanics….O line gave him pretty good pass protection against the niners. His timing may be off because he is getting rid of the ball sooner due to the pounding he has taken the first three weeks…..which would be mental.

Loved the statement from Van Pelt to Foles on the radio the other day “How does it feel to be 3-1 and then get back to Philly and realize you are 1-3”

People can say what they want about why the running game isn’t working. My opinion is that the poor play of the offensive line is why the Eagles can’t run the ball.

One thing that can’t be disputed is that the lack of a effective running game is the reason Nick Foles is tied for the league lead in pass attempts per game.

If Andy Reid and Mike Vick were here people would be blaming the QB woos on the fact that we throw the ball 42 times a game.

The Eagles ran the ball 12 times against the 49ers, despite having the lead through most of the game. That is not the way a Chip Kelly offense is intended to function.

If the Eagles running game does not get corrected they will be 8-8 at the end of the season.

Agreed.

And love the comparison to Reid/Vick. Constantly heard that QB struggles related to “pass happy” coach who never ran. Last 2 weeks, in close games, or with the lead, and Birds are over 2:1 pass:run.

That and Rudy Ruettiger playing centre.

I mentioned that fact! But you can’t have it your way just because it fits your agenda. I stated the play calling being a reason for the past struggles and again pointed it out after the 49ers games. But when play calling was pointed out in the past under the old regime, everyone that said play calling was an issue was called Vickpologist. So I guess now you cats are starting to understand that play calling/system impacts a QB’s performance.

Nah, I’m just screwing around.

The only think that worries me is how the 49ers knew what was coming. They werre playing 6 “in the box” and Bethea came charging in from 10-15 yards out every running play…right into each hole. He knew where the Eagles were going.

They’re saying it was from the hand signals, but I thinkit may have had more to do with the Stanford/Oregon connection.

Whatever it was, the 49ers knew what the Eagles were doing and were perfect for it. Everyone deep to stop the pass, and fly right down perfectly into the holes on running plays.

Something to watch going forward.

I say McCoy is not running hard enough or remaining discplined enough to hit the holes and is turning into another Bryce Brown and trying to cut every run out to the Sidelines for the homerun… He’s running scared bottom line..
I see Sproles getting 4-5 Yards every carry behind this same OL for he sticks his nose in there and gets moving forward, while McCoy is averaging 2.7 Yards per Carry.. Its the Runner and not the OL

wow, score one for Howie in free agency so far — What a colossal mistake by the Saints, compounded by tossing sproles’ contract to buy a fragile safety –

Yeah his injury background should’ve been a gigantic red flag.

I am glad the Eagles stayed far away from even talking or pursuing Jarius Byrd.. He’s been Injury Prone the last 3-4 Season, He’s toast
