Eagles-Giants Preview

NickFoles1Fear, doubt and worry; summarize some of those feelings creeping up with the matchup against the New York Giants?  Is the prime time stage where the luck finally runs out for this flawed 4-1 Eagles team, and we are exposed to the entire nation?

When there is more to criticize than to have confidence about, it becomes open season for critique and question marks about the state of the football team.  Even with the record, the majority of the fan base and media aren’t feeling too confident about our chances on Sunday night.

The focus is and needs to be the opponent at hand, the 3-2 New York Giants.  Spending time on the “what should have been” is merely time wasted.   Those five opponents are not on our schedule this week.

Giants

Riding a three game winning streak; Eli Manning has been a completely different quarterback, and the offense is clicking in all phases of the game.  The Giants welcomed their 2014 first round draft pick Odell Beckham Jr. to the mix last week after nagging lower body injuries kept him sidelined.  First NFL game, first career touchdown reception, the kid has tremendous talent, and compliments what wide receivers Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle had done the over the course of the first four game.

The Giants were developing a two heading machine out of the backfield, but off-season signee Rashad Jennings is out a few weeks with a knee injury, which opens the door four fourth rounder Andre Williams, who is a big bruising style of back.  The biggest surprise of the season for their offense has to be tight-end Larry Donnell.   Donnell has four touchdowns on the season and their other second tight-end Daniel Fells has three.  The Giants like to use their tight-ends in a lot of delayed patterns which the Eagles must be ready for, especially in the red-zone.

On defense, the Giants have a solid secondary, and from a talent and depth perspective, the best in the NFC East.  Their front seven is not ultra-talented, they some names like Mathias Kiwanuka and Jason Pierre-Paul, but those guys are used more as a scheme base to limit short gains, while allowing the playmakers in the secondary to force turnovers.

Eagles

The offense has not looked good for the better part of two games.  McCoy has yet to rip off the big run; Foles is continuing to turn the ball over while demonstrating a collapse in his fundamentals while throwing the football.

The offensive line looked better last week, but too many obvious breakdowns in both communication and assignments, and this is coming from more than the replacements for Kelce and Mathis.  Jason Peters has not played like the best offensive tackle in the game for the better part of this season.

The Eagles have given up the most passing touchdowns in the league.  Their secondary has made the likes of Kirk Cousins and Austin Davis look like stud quarterbacks.  The Giants passing attack looks impressive with their new system; and the Eagles will likely help that streak to continue.

The play of the special teams and the ability to score from plays made by the defense kept us in the 49ers game and was the reason we walked away last week with the win.

The offense has showed glimpses of being what we saw last season, but the threat of being able to score on any play, no matter where the ball is snapped is not there right now.

Prediction

-The defensive line of the Eagles has stepped up the last two games, and I see that happening again on Sunday night.

-The Eagles will win the turnover battle.

-The screen pass makes a nice return, and the Eagles record “10” receptions between McCoy and Sproles.

Eh..

Eagles ultimately need to go a min of 4-2 in the division – whether they beat the Giants now or later, they need to beat them at least once.

This is game is a toss up. I don’t think either side has a major advantage. Do agree with you that it will be a tight game, won by less than a score.

These Giants/Eagles Games are always close and you can toss out the Teams Records when they get together … I see a very tight game, Special Teams will be huge and big advantage for the Eagles whose ST Units are playing among the Best in all of Football while the Giants still are struggling in this Area..

2 Areas which will likely determine the Outcome ..
1) Which Team can run the Ball better and more effectively (Not neccessarily which side gets more yards, but who picks up the tough first downs, red-zone, etc, etc)
2) Which Teams TE’s Group have big games… Eagles Celek/Ertz versus the Giants Combo of Donnell/Fells … B Celek has typically played real well versus the Giants and it would be nice to see him get off to a fast start, but don’t sleep on these Giants TE’s who are big, decent feet with good hands…

I gave my tickets away for Sunday and the next game vs Carolina which is Monday night. I hate night games. I’ll be watching the NBC crew eating a Sicilian and maybe log in to GCobb at halftime and try to talk DCar’s blood pressure down a mercury level or two when he goes ballistic. Do other areas of the USA even have Sicilian Pizza?

Anybody remember the game in 2007 when the Eagles’ banged up offensive line gave-up 12 sacks to the Giants in a 16-3 loss? I think Winston Justice gave up half of the sacks to Osi….

I expect to see the Eagles offensive line struggle again tomorrow. Maybe not as bad as the 2007 game… The Giants are not a team your offensive line can get healthy against.

We need some big plays to win this one.

Y back.

Already worried about border crossing. Apparently anyone from Liberia can stroll right in….but 4 Canadians coming for a game…probably have our car impounded.

Though I’m sure if I wear a Ron Mexico jersey, the border guard will take it with a laugh non?

The Ron Mexico jersey will certainly get you some “extra attention” at the border for sure.

That should be a great weekend. You have off for the Thanksgiving Holiday on Monday already, so that should be an awesome way to spend the holiday.

GO BIRDS !!!!!

Foles steps up and delivers a great game…. Dline gets to Eli often…. eagles secondary looks the same… cause they are not good….. Mathews struggles at LB… again….. Birds win… 31-24.

My prediction….Marcus Smith gets his first sack of the year….or blows his achillees out tripping over a turf hole.

Way to early for the bust talk….but Davis schemed up this kid for two great blitz attempts…on one he was wide open…he blew it.

Josh Huff with one, 4 yard catch has already out produced Marcus Smith entire season’s production.
With Chris Polk and Brad Smith both likely inactives do you think Huff gets Kickoff duty? Maybe Watkins gets a dress to take over Brad Smith’s punt and kickoff coverage duty?

Eagles may activate ILB Jake Knott if DeMeco
Ryan’s is a no go… Kendrick’s is out and you can’t go into a Game
With Just Natthews & Acho at ILB

Thnx just read that last eve and was unaware..
Marcus Smith II may have to end up Playing some
ILB then.. Hard to go into an NFL Game with
Only 2 ILB’s… Maybe Trent Cole slides in for some snaps
As a blitzing ILB on Passing situations while Graham
Stays at OLB

Linebackers is a big concern for the rest of the season, seeing how thin this group is. Sad thing was that the Travis Long injury really put them in a bad spot. The guy played well in the preseason and was injured at the end. They should have made some better moves to get someone to add depth here, right now there is very little experience on the roster or practice squad.

With Goode & Long, they would have been in good shape,
Not many ILB’s out there either..
Where’s Ernie “Swim with the Sharks” Sims when you need him….
Good Greif…

there is no way the Eagles beat the NY Giants —
The NFL has to sell and is selling the Giants as a feature team the next 7 weeks and they can’t do that with a 3-3 NYG record off an Eagle loss. ( GIANTS schedule: eagles, dallas, bye, colts, seahawks, 49ers, then cowboys ) The Giants are going to be the various networks big market make money on advertising competition feature entertainment vehicle.

Logan Thomas played against the broncos in desperation mop up duty and completed 1 pass out of 8 attempts and has a 108.9 passer rating. 108.9 LOL lost all respect for that statistic.

Drew Stanton suffered a Concussion versus the Broncos which is why QB Logan Thomas Poayed last week and it was mop-up time as well
When looking at QB’s use the QBR Rating based out of 100 as the relevant overall play of a QB.. The Top QB are typically in the rated with a low 80’s Score on these Rankings which way factors as 3rd Down Efficiency, Red-Zone Efficieny, the last 2 Minutes of the 1st Half and 4th Quarter Stats more heavily than just overall passing stats ..

The best special teams in the league keeps making plays for us to win…I think our defense is going to give Eli problems, the Giants defense will shut Foles down…but our special teams are going to be the difference.
We simply need to avoid turning the ball over!

the team has proven it doesn’t need Shady to win so no need relying on him to do anything.
need 300 from Foles,
need 100 from Maclin,
need 100 total yards from Sproles ( and more touches )
